Simon Cowell picks Carly Smithson’s song for Mariah Carey Week - “Without You” - VIDEO Spoiler

Apologies for the clip. The sound is out of sync, but it’s worth watching anyway. Simon Cowell’s girlfriend Terri Seymour asks him who he thinks will pull off Mariah Carey week. Yes, this coming week Mariah Carey will be the mentor, and the theme is HER SONGS and only her songs. YIKES!

Anyway. Simon tells Terri that he thinks it’s a real opportunity for Carly Smithson. Terri then spills the beans. She tells Simon that Carly told her that she’s planning on performing the song he suggested for her in an interview.

Carly will be singing Mariah Carey’s “Without You”.

Carly: PLEASE LOVE ME DADDY! Maybe Simon will finally be pleased with Carly and she’ll be a happy, happy girl at last.

Oh, and Paula has a suggestion for the boys if they want to hit those high notes. But you have to check out the video And take the poll! after the jump. Oh that Paula!

Randy, Simon, Paula and Ryan Appear on Larry King Live - Video

Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, Ryan Seacrest on Larry King Live

Randy Jackson, Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Ryan Seacrest took up the entire hour of Larry King Live last night. After discussing Idol Gives Back, the gang opined on Season 7 and where they think each of the eight stand. They also predicted who would be the last two standing…

Watch the clips after the Jump…

Highlights:

  • All four plan to donate their earnings for that night to Idol Gives Back.
  • They agree that it will come down to a Battle of the Davids–David Archuleta and David Cook–for the Final Two.
  • Simon predicts that Syesha Mercado, Kristy Lee Cook or Jason Castro will be eliminated Thursday.
  • David Cook is favored by all 3 judges. Simon calls him “fearless” and says he’s his personal favorite.
  • They agree that Carly Smithson has not figured out who she is as an artist yet.
  • They think Michael Johns should stick to blue eyed soul. They don’t like him as a rocker.
  • Brooke White should stick to what she does best–singer/songwriter stuff. She could make it into the Final 3 or 4 if she picks the right songs.
  • All the judges agree that David Archuleta is the one to beat. He needs to pick the right songs to maintain his front-runner status.
  • Simon says the odds of Kristy Lee Cook winning are “one million to one”. Randy thinks she could have a country recording contract somewhere down the road. Simon doesn’t think she’s a great country singer. “She’s forgettable,” he says.
  • Randy thinks Jason Castro is “OK” as a singer–he’s just a “singer/songwriter in a bar”. Ryan challenges Randy. He says Randy said something different on the show. Paula thinks he has a very “definitive style”. Randy would not give him a recording contract, but he’d sign Kristy Lee Cook. Simon thinks Jason is all about song choice. Simon says, “the trouble is, he turns up every week and he looks like he doesn’t care.”
  • Randy thinks Syesha Mercado is more of an actress/singer and that she’ll end up on stage. Simon doesn’t think her vocals are good enough.
  • Simon’s favorite Idol is Kelly Clarkson. He thinks she brought legitimacy to the franchise, and he likes her personally since he’s gotten to know her.
  • An email question uses the phrase “pimp spot” and the judges find that funny. They have NO clue whatsoever how performance order is picked. They think names are picked out of a hat!
  • Randy thinks America has gotten the winner right every year. Simon thinks America got it wrong Season 5 with Taylor Hicks.
  • Larry King is an idiot.

Season 7 Audition Update - Omaha, Nebraska.

ETA: American Idol auditions have finished in Philadelphia, San Diego (the judges admited to liking a couple of singers there!), Charleston, Dallas,  Miami and Omaha.  Last to go: The judges round in Atlanta.

Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell auditioned hopefuls yesterday and today, including 23 year old Ross Koley, who of course, isn’t spilling the beans. Ross says, “If you watch the show in January, you’ll get to see everything that happens.

Uhhm. Or not, Ross. Many filmed auditions in front of the the judges wind up on the cutting room floor, or cut in a way that you won’t even recognize.

However, Idol producers did take time to film Ross singing in a local bar where he works as a waiter.

Camera crews also hit the streets on Thursday to record the contestants in their “natural habitat” as it were. I wonder how Idol producers plan to spin the city of Omaha? Considering their track record, I cringe at the thought…

Final Round American Idol Auditions Take Place in Dallas This Weekend

ETA:  This guy auditioned in front of the producers today.  He blew it when he admitted to Nigel Lythgoe that he knew he couldn’t sing, but was auditioning because he wanted to be on the show.  Dumbass.

Second and third-round auditions are taking place at the W hotel in Dallas this weekend:

The American Idol frenzy continues in Dallas – this time at the luxurious W Hotel. Hundreds of second-round contestants showed up at the Victory Park hotel Thursday morning to audition for the show’s executive producers.

An Idol publicist said those “few hundred” contestants would be whittled down to an unspecified number. Contestants who then make it to the third round will audition sometime this weekend in front of Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson.

All three are reportedly scheduled to arrive in Dallas today, though Idol would not release details on when. Auditions will take place throughout the weekend at the W Hotel.

Randy, Simon and Paula Audition Season 7 Hopefuls in Philly

Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell were in Philadelphia, PA this weekend for the first set of 3rd round auditions.  When asked by the press during the lunch break what he thought of the talent he had seen so far, Simon Cowell said,

“A lot of the auditions are …the equivalent of eating water for lunch – it doesn’t leave you with anything,” Simon told reporters Saturday afternoon, reaching into his bag of similes for one that’s not likely to strike a chord in a city known for fattier fare.

If I were a little ambitious this morning, I could go back through my archives and show you similar quotes from last year, and the year before.  That’s Simon’s shtick–telling reporters the talent is crap.   Remember Simon unloading on Seattle last year? In the end, Seattle turned out both the winner and runner-up (Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis).  ]

C’mon people, we need some new material here!

Randy, Paula and Simon will continue to audition hopefuls throughout September and October.

Season 7 Audition Update - Philadelphia PA

The last of the “cattle call” Season 7 auditions took place in Philadelphia, PA this week.  According to American Idol producer Patrick Lynn, there was a “monster turnout.” at Wachovia Stadium. “Three times the size it had been anywhere else,”  Lynn says. Philadelphia is not only the last audition city, but also the only tourstop in the Northeast. All in all, 20,000 people turned out to audition, the largest turnout in Idol history according to Idol publicists.

Anthony Fedorov worked the crowds at the audition for the local FOX affiliate.  Also on hand were Kimberly Caldwell for TV Guide and Constantine Maroulis. According to Kimberly, tryouts in front of the producers are taking place at a secret location Wednesday and Thursday. Auditions in front of Randy, Paula and Simon will take place Saturday and Sunday.

Producer Lynn says, “Philadelphia is the turnaround city, so you’re lucky to be getting all the judging done in one week. In the other cities, we’ve just done the first round preliminaries and so we’ll be revisiting those towns after Philly.” The judges rounds with Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell, will continue through the second week of October.

Finale Recap

Jordin Sparks looked exactly as I pictured her in the moment of her Idol victory.  Her win was certainly no surprise after Tuesday’s show, where Blake proved to be no match for Jordin’s prowess for power-emoting treacly lyrics.  Personally? I think it’s as it should be. Jordin is the perfect winner. Too bad the show ran so long we could not get some extended moments of Jordin revelling in her triumph with her fellow Idols.  The confetti machine appeared to be on the fritz, too.  Damn.

Biggest complaint about last night’s mostly entertaining finale?  More Idols, please.  Really, did we need to hear Gwen Stefani pimp lip sync sing her new single from an undisclosed location?  I would have rather had another medley from the kids.  Last year’s finale was so good, because it was filled with appearances from the performers who make Idol what it is–the KIDS.  In fact, Prince was the only guest last year to appear WITHOUT also performing with the Top 12.  This year, there were five solo performances from guest stars.

Having said that, I enjoyed performances from Tony Bennett and Green Day anyway.  The aforementioned Gwen, and Bette Midler–not so much.  Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight and Joe Perry of Aerosmith were not only entertaining, but they all played nicely with the kids.

“It’s the night we’ve all been waiting for.  Who will take the title?  The beatboxer from Seattle, or the sweetheart from Arizona. The world is watching…This is American Idol!  For the last time this year…sniff. Continue reading ‘Finale Recap’

Idol News Update

Catch up with your favorite Idols

People Magazine has published a new book that features glimpses into the current lives of every Idol from Season 1 through the present. Called American Idol: Where Are They Now?, it’s available on newsstands as we speak. I’m such a lame-o, I’ll be totally running out to my local bookstore to pick up a copy tomorrow. For a sneak peak, check out the picture gallery at People.com featuring 10 past idols including Diana DeGarmo, Jon Peter Lewis, Trenyce and Julia DeMato.

Idol Record News

Kelly Clarkson has decided to release “Never Again” as her first single from her third album, “My December,” due to be released this summer. Elliott Yamin’s self-titled album sold 90K it’s first week out–bolstered by promotion that included TV and in-store appearances. You can read details of Elliott’s unusual independent record and promotion deal in this Hits Daily Double piece. Check out the video for Kellie Picker’s latest single “I Wonder” here. Mandisa will release her first single “Only The World” on May 22.  Her debut album, produced by Shaun Shankel (Destiny’s Child, Kimberly Locke), Doubledutch–Robert Marvin and Josiah Bell (tobyMac, Mat Kearney) will be released this July.  She’s also writing a book, called “Idoleyes” due out on June 1.  Finally, Carmen Rasumsen from Season 2 has signed a record deal with Lofton Creek Records out of Nashville. Carmen’s album is set to be released this summer.

More Golf for Taylor

Taylor Hicks was once thrown out of a hospitality tent at the Regions Charity Classic for lack of proper credentials.  This year, he’ll be headlining the tournament’s Charter Telephone Pro-Am golf tournament. Kid One Transport and Studio By the Tracks, two of Taylor’s favorite charities, will each receive $7,500 from the tournament proceeds in Taylor’s name.

Idols on TV and the Big Screen

Constantine Maroulis will join the cast of “The Bold and the Beautiful” this summer.  According to Executive Producer, Brad Bell, Constantine will play a fictional version of himself.  He’ll be involved in the Phoebe/Rick storyline as a possible music producer for Phoebe.  Whatever all that means…  According to Constantine’s My Space, his first episode will air May 14.  Jennifer Hudson is playing fellow Oscar winner Forest Whitaker’s daughter in Winged Creatures, now shooting in Los Angeles. The film, directed by Rowan Woods (Little Fish), also features Kate Beckinsale, Dakota Fanning, Guy Pearce, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Embeth Davidtz. Lisa Tucker has booked a role in the Fox network’s drama pilot “Born in the USA.” The pilot is being produced by 19 Entertainment (surprise, surprise) and revolves around the lives of blue collar families in Philadelphia.

Keeping up with the Judges

Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul are headed to New Orleans the weekend of April 14 to film in the Mississippi delta and work with Hurricane Katrina survivors for the “Idol Gives Back” special.  Randy Jackson is expected to join X-Factor, the British talent-reality show produced by Simon Cowell, as a judge.  He’ll be joining Sharon Osborne and Simon Cowell on the panel. And, Paula Abdul has signed with APA.  According to the Hollywood Reporter, the agency will “work with her on developing multigenerational, international lifestyle branding opportunities.”  Alrighty then…
