Idol Odds and Ends

The lengthy (and really informative–worth the read) USA Today article that leads today’s headlines thread featured a short list of tweaks to look out for in Season 7’s competition:

  • Letting singers play musical instruments during their performances in the first combined gathering of audition survivors, known as the Hollywood Round.
  • Visiting finalists’ hometowns and interviewing family and friends earlier in the process to help viewers get to know them faster.
  • Building a new set and creating a new opening credits sequence. Idol’s theme song will remain the same.
  • Adding an hour to the Hollywood Round and a possible “where are they now?” segment to highlight earlier Idol performers on top-12 results shows.

And from today’s Daily News Rush and Molloy column. BMG execs offer more insight to why Taylor Hicks, Katharine McPhee and Ruben Studdard were dropped from their labels:

Taylor Hicks (and Ruben Studdard) No Longer With J Records - It Appears To Be Official

On Friday, Shirley Halperin of EW.com dropped this gossip bomb–not only had Ruben Studdard been dropped by J Records, but Taylor Hicks had been as well.

That bit of news percolated around the internet for a few days while the usual suspects did their research, and now many publications, including Billboard.com, FOX news, Rollingstone, and the Associated Press (many news outlets are picking up the AP story) covering the story.

From EOnline News

J Records has confirmed the departures of former Idol champs Taylor Hicks and Ruben Studdard from the label that signed them after their respective wins on the hit Fox show.

“Taylor is going to record on his own for the next album,” J Records’ Liz Morentin wrote in an email Monday. “Ruben Studdard is still signed to 19 Entertainment [the production/management company behind Idol], and is currently working on his new album, however it will not be distributed by J Records.”

And from Mary Colurso of the Birmingham News:

Idol Bits and Pieces

Update: More Bits and Pieces

Dolly Parton to Mentor on Season 7

It looks like Dolly Parton plans to be a celebrity mentor on Season 7 next year.  She says, “I won’t be a judge. I couldn’t do that. I can’t tell people they aren’t doing a good job even if they ask me. To tell someone if they’re good or bad, or if they suck isn’t me.”  Dolly will be on hand to make sure the season 7 contestants don’t butcher her songs. Dolly rarely permits her songs to be sung by contestants during the competition.

One More Dying Quail

Hear your favorite Idols, or not, sing the National Anthem.

TV’s Top Earners

According to Forbes magazine.  #3 - Simon Cowell at $45 million.  #14 - Ryan Seacrest at $14 million.  Oprah Winfrey and Jerry Seinfeld are #1 and #2 respectively.

Some TV News

The second season of the syndicated show American Idol Rewind begins this weekend. Season 2 winner, Ruben Studdard, introduces the first episode and runner-up, Clay Aiken, narrates. New interviews with Season 2 contestants are interspersed with re-caps of the Season 2 competition. Re-live Season 2 peeps! You know you want to–just don’t bring the fan war here. Seriously. Check your local listings for time and channel.

The Next Great American Band debuts on Friday, October 19 with a two hour special beginning at 8 pm on FOX. Two-hour specials will follow the next two weeks, with the show settling into it’s regular time slot, 8 pm, on November 7th. Will the latest show from American Idol producers attract an audience on Friday nights? Hopefully, the television season’s first casualty is not an omen…

Lastly…

American Idol’s parent company, CKX, is closer to becoming a privately held company. I guess.

Finale Recap

Jordin Sparks looked exactly as I pictured her in the moment of her Idol victory.  Her win was certainly no surprise after Tuesday’s show, where Blake proved to be no match for Jordin’s prowess for power-emoting treacly lyrics.  Personally? I think it’s as it should be. Jordin is the perfect winner. Too bad the show ran so long we could not get some extended moments of Jordin revelling in her triumph with her fellow Idols.  The confetti machine appeared to be on the fritz, too.  Damn.

Biggest complaint about last night’s mostly entertaining finale?  More Idols, please.  Really, did we need to hear Gwen Stefani pimp lip sync sing her new single from an undisclosed location?  I would have rather had another medley from the kids.  Last year’s finale was so good, because it was filled with appearances from the performers who make Idol what it is–the KIDS.  In fact, Prince was the only guest last year to appear WITHOUT also performing with the Top 12.  This year, there were five solo performances from guest stars.

Having said that, I enjoyed performances from Tony Bennett and Green Day anyway.  The aforementioned Gwen, and Bette Midler–not so much.  Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight and Joe Perry of Aerosmith were not only entertaining, but they all played nicely with the kids.

“It’s the night we’ve all been waiting for.  Who will take the title?  The beatboxer from Seattle, or the sweetheart from Arizona. The world is watching…This is American Idol!  For the last time this year…sniff. Continue reading ‘Finale Recap’

Goodbye Phil Stacey and Chris Richardson

Declared safe: Melinda Doolittle, LaKisha Jones

Eliminated:  Phil Stacey….

Declared safe: Jordin Sparks, Blake Lewis

Eliminated: Chris Richardson

*****************

“I’m not that shocked tonight, and I don’t think our viewers will be shocked tonight.” Nigel Lythgoe tells Chuck Ross of TV Week Wednesday afternoon before the results show.

Well, I was a little shocked. Phil Stacey, left the competition this week after 3 very strong performances in a row.  And despite TPTB’s attempts to throw him under the bus–hell because of their attempts, ’cause by now I figure America really isn’t listening to them anymore–he’d sail through to the next round.  LaKisha Jones, on the other hand, made a comeback only this week after several lackluster performances in a row, and a drubbing by the judges last week.

After factoring in demographic vote splitting (assuming that she’s sharing the same fan base as Melinda)  I was sure LaKisha was a goner.

Well, the little Q&A with Ryan before her performance, where she finally showed she had some humor and sass, and that kiss from Simon after her fabulous performance probably did not hurt.  I think this week’s LaKisha pimping may have sealed Phil’s fate, but I think it bought her only one more week.  I expect a Melinda-Blake-Jordin finale.

Good thing I’m not betting on any of these awesome predictions of mine.  Heh.

Chris Richardson, on the other hand, seemed destined for the boot this week.  And, he was not the least bit surprised when Ryan told him he was going home. Continue reading ‘Top 6* Results’
