Ryan Seacrest is a Maverick! At least the editors at Details, think so. Ryan is gracing the cover of their April issue and is featured as one of their “Mavericks” this month.

Details threw a super-swanky party in his honor in Los Angeles Thursday. The pictures of the party are available. You know what that means. Oh yeah! It’s time for another edition of Caption This! After the Jump!

Fox’s ‘Idol’-ized Emmycast demo-lished
I mean, it’s not like Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick produced as they originally planned (they eventually bowed out, claiming they had too much work on their plates). And, host Ryan Seacrest barely took the stage during the entire telecast. Nevertheless, This year’s Emmy telecast was one of the lowest rated evah: Continue reading ‘Idol Bits and Pieces’

American Idol Finally Wins an Emmy
The Creative Arts Emmy Awards took place Saturday night. The event covers the technical awards and b-list categories deemed too boring for the primetime telecast. American Idol took the award for Outstanding Technical Direction for it’s Idol Gives Back episode. That win kept it within four losses (22 losses before the win) of beating “Newhart” which had 25 nominations without a win. Congrats TPTB!
However, there are some who think Idol should be forced t give it back:
How is it possible that “Idol Gives Back” was permitted to compete as a special and a series? It can’t be both. It was either a stand-alone TV special and should compete in those races, or it was a regular episode of an ongoing series and compete there. The Emmys have distinctly separate awards for those different program classifications.
I’m sure the academy folks would have to pry that award out of the producer’s cold, dead hands if they actually changed their minds…
Ryan Seacrest Weighs in on This Summer’s Idol Tour
In an USAToday interview with Ryan Seacrest (he’ll be hosting the Emmy Awards next Sunday night on FOX) he has this to say about the news that tour receipts are down for this summer’s Idol tour:
Ryan responded to our story today about the American Idol tour not selling out, saying: “Try smaller venues.” Then he added, “I think, to be candid with you, we could have done a better job with the storytelling of the contestants — looking at who they are and where they came from and compiling compelling bio pieces, and I think you’ll see us do more of that this season.”
Regular readers of this blog know that I agree wholeheartedly with Ryan’s assessment. The producers got a little too full of their own success–they forgot what makes the show compelling–the contestants. Nothing more, and nothing less.

The last of the “cattle call” Season 7 auditions took place in Philadelphia, PA this week. According to American Idol producer Patrick Lynn, there was a “monster turnout.” at Wachovia Stadium. “Three times the size it had been anywhere else,” Lynn says. Philadelphia is not only the last audition city, but also the only tourstop in the Northeast. All in all, 20,000 people turned out to audition, the largest turnout in Idol history according to Idol publicists.
Anthony Fedorov worked the crowds at the audition for the local FOX affiliate. Also on hand were Kimberly Caldwell for TV Guide and Constantine Maroulis. According to Kimberly, tryouts in front of the producers are taking place at a secret location Wednesday and Thursday. Auditions in front of Randy, Paula and Simon will take place Saturday and Sunday.
Producer Lynn says, “Philadelphia is the turnaround city, so you’re lucky to be getting all the judging done in one week. In the other cities, we’ve just done the first round preliminaries and so we’ll be revisiting those towns after Philly.” The judges rounds with Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell, will continue through the second week of October.

Unfortunately, little things get in the way of my blogging. Like my job, for instance. Just a little thing. Ha. Between travelling this week, and catching up at work, I am behind on my blogging, as usual. Good thing, the blog continues on without me, as LisaB and Kirsten keep you guys and informed and massively entertained every day with Idol news and chart and sales news (respectively). Thanks guys!
While I was away, Idol auditions took place in Atlanta, GA this week. My blogger buddy Rodney Ho from the Atlanda-Journal Constitution was on hand at the Georgia Dome to blog the excitement–from registration, to the auditions, to first-person audition accounts. Ryan Seacrest was there as was Constantine Maroulis who was appearing on behalf of Garnier hair products (?!!?)
Fifteen-thousand hopefuls waited in line for their chance to audition for the first-line producers and hopefully move on to the producer and judges rounds. Rodney interviewed repeat auditioners, and Season 6’s Brandon Rogers and Kimberly Caldwell covered the event for TV Guide.
Auditions begin today in Charlston, SC. By Thursday morning, 4,000 had arrived to wait in line. By this morning, the number grew to 9,000. The next city on the schedule is Miami, FL, Wednesday, August 22.

in American Idol, Recaps, Taylor Hicks, Carrie Underwood, Ruben Studdard, Kelly Clarkson, S6 Finals, Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, Chris Sligh, Chris Richardson, Melinda Doolittle, LaKisha Jones, Stephanie Edwards, Jordin Sparks, Gina Glocksen, Haley Scarnato, Phil Stacey, Brandon Rogers, Blake Lewis, Nigel Lythgoe, Ryan Seacrest and Randy Jackson.
Jordin Sparks looked exactly as I pictured her in the moment of her Idol victory. Her win was certainly no surprise after Tuesday’s show, where Blake proved to be no match for Jordin’s prowess for power-emoting treacly lyrics. Personally? I think it’s as it should be. Jordin is the perfect winner. Too bad the show ran so long we could not get some extended moments of Jordin revelling in her triumph with her fellow Idols. The confetti machine appeared to be on the fritz, too. Damn.
Biggest complaint about last night’s mostly entertaining finale? More Idols, please. Really, did we need to hear Gwen Stefani pimp lip sync sing her new single from an undisclosed location? I would have rather had another medley from the kids. Last year’s finale was so good, because it was filled with appearances from the performers who make Idol what it is–the KIDS. In fact, Prince was the only guest last year to appear WITHOUT also performing with the Top 12. This year, there were five solo performances from guest stars.
Having said that, I enjoyed performances from Tony Bennett and Green Day anyway. The aforementioned Gwen, and Bette Midler–not so much. Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight and Joe Perry of Aerosmith were not only entertaining, but they all played nicely with the kids.
“It’s the night we’ve all been waiting for. Who will take the title? The beatboxer from Seattle, or the sweetheart from Arizona. The world is watching…This is American Idol! For the last time this year…sniff. Continue reading ‘Finale Recap’

Corrections and Clarifications
According to an article in USA Today, Iain Pirie, head of US operations for 19 Entertainment says that, “it’s 95% certain there won’t be a Idol TV special, at least for this year, because effort is being concentrated on the charity special, Idol Gives Back.”
However, the Idol songwriting contest is moving ahead. Here are the details:
- Amateur hopefuls — 18 and up with no exclusive publishing deals–can write and record songs and upload them at songwriter.americanidol.com until April 17.
- A team headed by Idol creator Simon Fuller will pick 20 songs from those submitted and let fans listen on the website. They will then have a week, starting May 2, to vote for their favorites, one online vote per fan, Pirie says.
- Once a winner is picked, a record producer will arrange and produce the song for the Idol finalists, possibly consulting with the songwriter, who will get a one-song, standard deal with 19 Entertainment.
- The amateur songwriters will be responsible for putting together the performance for the contest submission.
American Idol producer, Ken Warwick, held a conference call with reporters on Tuesday afternoon. Here are some highlights: Continue reading ‘More American Idol News’
