Hollywood Rounds

The Hollywood Rounds begin tonight.  It’s a short round this year.  Tonight will feature group and individual auditions.  Tomorrow night is the “Green Mile” episode–40 contestants will be cut down to the Top 24.  There is a spoiler list put together by the kids at Idol Forums. Check it out here.  I posted a rumored blow-by-blow of Hollywood week back in December. We’ll find out soon enough (tomorrow!) if the kids are alright…

Rumor has it that a couple of contestants may have been disqualified. Tommy Daniels, who was revealed by TMZ to have a record, was supposedly disqualified for releasing information to the media.  According to the spoilers, another potential Top 40/24 contestant may have been disqualified and/or quit.  And, there is a pervasive rumor around the net that Sean Michel was eliminated because he refused to cut his hair.

My fellow blogger, Dave McGurgan from Phillyburbs.com says that “an Idol insider high up in the food chain, who goes by the name AJ, contacted phillyBurbs.com last week, claiming that the next American Idol has already been chosen: Brandon Rogers.”  Hmmm.

More from Nigel Lythgoe’s recent teleconference:

  • Nigel would like to extend the upper age limit next year from 28 to 30. He raises this issue every year. Raising the age limit Season 4 from 24 to 28 resulted in more seasoned, therefore more entertaining contestants. While the producers are at it, they should also raise the bottom limit from 16 to 18. Just think how awesome Paris Bennett would have been with a few more years experience under her belt.
  • According to Nigel, “There is one young lady in Hollywood who I would have said would have been in the top five this year [but] got cut purely and simply because she couldn’t remember her lyrics in a group…It’s sad, but that’s what a competition is. You’ve got to work every single day.”  Hmmm, I heard about people making it through to the Top 40/44 who forgot lyrics or completely lost their voices during the Hollywood Rounds…

Here’s more on some of your Season 6 contestants:

A UK reader, Telespy uploaded this audition to You Tube. Vanessa Herrick’s audition was featured after Gina Glockson in the UK version of the “Best Of The Rest” episode.  According to Telespy, “she got a golden ticket, and some interesting comments from Simon.”

Remember Wandera Hitchye who was told during the Memphis Auditions by Simon that “there are so many singers like you trying to get deals right now,” before all three judges rejected her?  Wandera claims that she never auditioned in front of the judges.  That, in the final edit, it was only made to look that way:

The contestant stated that she didn’t perform in front of Simon, Paula or Randy which everyone saw on their television screen. The tape was instead edited to make it look like she did according to the contestant. In fact, Hitchye actually performed in front of the producer of the show Nigel Lythgoe who told her that he loved her singing, but didn’t like her performance.

There were reports of this sort of “creative editing” going on last year too.  Speaking of which, Eonline.com has more on the Akron Watson Hollywood dis-invitation flapdoodle. Golden ticket holders are dis-invited every year in what are called pre-Hollywood phone cuts.  In between the auditions and the Hollywood rounds, if background checks run on the contestants turn up something unfavorable that contestant is cut–sometimes just a few days before the round starts.

There are questions about what criteria is used to determine whether a contestant is cut or not.  A contestant who isn’t upfront about their past will probably get cut later on if the problem pops up in a routine check.  However, Akron claims that the producers knew about the drug bust that could be the reason for his dismissal.  Also, there are other contestants, Bo Bice for instance, who were able to compete despite a past drug bust.  In fact, as you will see this week, there is a contestant who is rumored to go very far who actually did time in prison, so…

It’s all very mysterious, isn’t it?

Lastly, learn more about contestants Chris Richardson and JL Cotter from these articles in their home town papers.  Both are rumored to have done very well in Hollywood…

Bits and Pieces - The Powers That Be Edition

In a conference call with reporters on Thursday, Idol executive producer, Nigel Lythgoe, revealed details about a mid-season special.  It will revolve around the songwriting competition and will feature an all-star cast of former Idols singing the Top 10 songwriting submissions from viewers.  Names mentioned for the special: Constantine Maroulis, Ace Young, Vonzell Solomon and Tamyra Gray. By the way, I was told some details of this special back in December.  My wonderful, and most awesomely-awesome source swore me to secrecy, so I kept mum. Oh, and there was that not-wanting-to-wake-up-and-find-a-horses-head-in-my-bed deal. Yeah, there was that.

The rest of Nigel’s press conference was full of amusing dissembling. Like this:

“We are informed at the end of the day [by Fox] that you can’t invite this person or persons, and we don’t ask why. To be frank, we’re not interested. If Fox believes it will damage the show… then it’s best they just don’t come along.”

Right. The network is calling the shots rather than the 800 pound gorilla that is Freemantle Media. I am laughing now. If Freemantle wanted Akron, they would have gotten him. And I don’t believe for a nanosecond that the executive producers have no idea what his background check turned up. Sawry. That dog don’t hunt.

Here’s a gem:

And Cowell’s infamous “bush baby” remark to one contestant? “A bush baby isn’t even a monkey… .A bush baby has beautiful, big eyes… .I don’t find it derogatory.”

OMG.  I’m speechless.

When asked why the producers chose to add an audition episode at the expense of the Hollywood rounds (there will only be two Hollywood Round episodes next week) Nigel said:

“There wasn’t that much that occurred in Hollywood to warrant two episodes. We often stretch it out already. This year, the audition episodes were so strong. We wanted to introduce to America more of the contestants that are going to Hollywood.

The super-hilarious part is bolded. The extra episode yielded 6 Hollywood bound contestants (two of them, the carhops, together in one segment) who could have been edited into their respective city episodes. Oh, but then some of the joke auditions would’ve had to been cut.

Why not just say that the audition episodes attract a wide audience–an audience who adores watching train wrecks? When the Hollywood rounds start, the ratings take a dip. Why not just say that and be done with it?

One more.  This concerns our gal Paula Abdul.  Apparently, there’s been some extry-speshul editing this season:

Lythgoe said “Unfortunately, once you get in your head that she’s drunk or she’s taking drugs, neither of which she does, she certainly doesn’t do social drugs or even drink, so once you’ve got that in your head it’s very difficult.  We look when we’re editing the show nowadays and say, “Hey, are people going to think she’s drunk for doing that?”  We try and take that into account.”

So, they edit her so she doesn’t look drunk? Coulda fooled me.

Speaking of Poor Paula, she has been slapped with a lawsuit from a production house, Pilgrim Films and Television, which claims that she sold their original idea of making a reality show on her life to another company.

According to the court papers filed by Pilgrim Films and Television (PFTV) in Los Angeles County Superior court, they met with Abdul and her producing associate David Russo in 2004, and discussed the deal about making a talk show that will be hosted by Abdul.

Later it was decided that a reality show ‘Hey Paula’ would be made on her bizarre showbiz life.

The lawsuit has also stated that the project was cancelled after the 44-year-old pop star demanded editorial control of the program.

PFTV representatives have also claimed that they wanted to revive the project by selling the company, and that they were taken aback when Abdul told them that she had sold the idea to US network Bravo.

Paula’s response: “While I’m not going to respond to this baseless lawsuit, I will say that Hey Paula is based upon my life and my ideas. Last I heard, I still own my own life.”

Today’s last item.  And I have to admit it strikes a bit of fear in my heart.  According to the New York Post, American Idol creator and executive producer, Simon Fuller, is working with Michael Jackson to help resuscitate his DOA career.  Uhh, just leave Idol out of it, OK Simon?  I could maybe deal with a Michael Jackson/Jackson 5 theme week that DID NOT INCLUDE a guest appearance from the skeery one.  But, if you bring him on as a guest, or (UGH) allow him to appear on the finale, I’m boycotting.  No joke.

Auditions - The Best of The Rest

The Best of the Rest?

I’m not only bored with the auditions, but I’m WAY bored with recapping them.  I’ll muddle though this last one, just for you guys.  You’ve stuck with me this far, I owe you one.

I’ve never been a great fan of the auditions, but have always been compelled to watch anyway.  Amongst all the fakers, the deluded and the just plain weird are the contestants who capture your attention, and keep it throughout the competition.  It’s fun to find a favorite during the auditions–whether it’s that geek who stuns you when he opens his mouth to sing, or that guy in a shirt and tie with the sweet tenor and the snarky gleam in his eye.  Or, the young man with the old soul whose voice can make you cry. So I watch, hoping for a glimpse of the awesome.

This last audition episode is really a throwaway.  We are treated to auditions of a few contestants who appear to be in it for the long haul.  In fact, I’m betting some of you found your favorite tonight. But, beyond a few gems the rest is just filler.  It would have been better to edit those few good auditions into their respective audition city episodes and given us one more night of the Hollywood Rounds. If you ask me.

But, I’m going to stop complaining.  The auditions are over.  Hallelujah.

The producers wrap this show up in a theme–the do’s and don’ts of Idol auditioning. It’s confusing. They start numbering the items, then stop, and then pick up again.  I could re-watch the video and figure it out, but, nah.  The segments have titles like “The Look”, “Seek Inspiration” and “Never Give Up”. There is also a segment about songwriting that serves as a handy way to pimp the upcoming songwriting competition.

One last time for Season 6, here is a rundown of tonight’s auditioners: UPDATE: Added Screencaps. Continue reading ‘Auditions - The Best of The Rest’

Season 6 Contestant Update

It looks like the enterprising kids at Idol Forums may have spoiled the entire Top 24.  You can find a comprehensive list of the Top 40/24 here, complete with links to music samples and background information on each contestant.

Kudos to both Idol Maniac (who did some awesome and thorough research on all the contestants) and RickyHoeGuardian for managing to infiltrate the SuperSekrit Idol cabal. Kids, watch out. You might find a horse’s head in your bed some morning.  I keed, I keed. Sidenote: I’m linking to information on a message board. I’m not revealing trade secrets. I also don’t negotiate with high-priced lawyers over the phone. I am not an idiot. thnxokbye.

Ahem.  I have no idea if the list is accurate, so peruse at your own risk.  However the list does reflect one I posted back in December here and here.  At the time, I had no idea whether the list was correct or not, but now I see I may have been right on the money. Yay me.

On with the Season 6 Contestant update:

Entertainment Weekly ranks the Idol auditioners.  You can check out their Top 20 list here, and then vote for your favorite.  EW lists Sundance Head, Chris Sligh and Porcelana Patino in their Top 3.  Currently, the popular vote has Chris Sligh out in front at 35%, Sundance Head 2nd with 14% and Sanjaya Malakar 3rd with 11%.

Here’s a short article about Chris Sligh’s university days at North Greenville University in SC. Until recently, Chis kept up a really interesting blog.  It’s worth a read.  And, his band, Half Past Forever has posted a music video on You Tube.  Click the video link! You will not be sorry.  The song, “Know” has a GREAT guitar hook and a fine melody.  All in all, a nifty little power pop gem.  Me likey. I’m very glad Chris is in this competition.

Brandon Rogers, the talented backup singer who auditioned in Los Angeles, like so many hopeful auditioners, has a My Space page. More and more Idols are using MySpace to network with fans, and get their music out to the public.  Interestingly, with some research, and a few names, one can find a wealth of information about a contestant and the ongoing competition even before the details hit the airwaves.

For instance, the chatter between contestants mid to late January left many tantalizing clues about how the Top 24 selection was going. Marlea Stroman, for example–remember her from Season 4?  Marlea was the contestant who cracked under pressure-claimed she missed her young child-and was shown leaving town.  According to her MySpace, she auditioned again this year and made it to Hollywood. If you are interested in knowing what happens to Marlea, read the comments on her page…

Birmingham auditioner Jamie Lynn Ward made the shocking revelation on Tuesday’s show–with a scary lack of emotional affect–that her daddy shot her step-mother and then “hisself”.  Afterward, she moved in with her grandmother to help take care of her dad, who was left paralyzed from the neck down. Of course, almost immediately, the press filled in the blanks.  Here is a news account from February 2006, when the crime occurred:

A Reidsville man shot his wife, then turned the gun on himself early Saturday morning, according to police.

…The release states that North Carolina Highway Patrolman R.W. Hamilton, who was the first to arrive on scene, observed a muzzle flash from several shots fired inside the home as he pulled into the driveway.

Shortly thereafter, several Reidsville officers arrived on the scene and Beverly Emory Ward, of the residence, told them her husband had shot her.

After hearing Jamie Lynn’s story, I wondered what happened to the step-mom.  After the show aired Tuesday, the press caught up with her here:

“I remember seeing blue lights,” she said Thursday from her home in Alamance County. “I remember looking back at my husband, and I remember him looking at me like I was somebody he didn’t know. I remember him saying, ‘God forgive me for what I’m about to do.’ I remember him pointing the gun at me, and I remember him shooting me three times.”

Beverly Ward, the stepmother, said she had told relatives to watch the show, unaware of what was going to be said. When Jamie’s audition aired, her phone started ringing. Relatives called to ask if she knew of Jamie’s comments beforehand.

“Emotionally, it just about destroyed me,” Beverly said. “She was on ‘American Idol.’ She should have been talking about herself and not dragging this back up.”

Jamie Lynn’s step-mom refused to press charges against her husband.  She claims that he had mixed alcohol with a Valium and, “That was just not my husband. That was just something I would have never expected him to do. If he hadn’t been drinking, and hadn’t taken that Valium, it wouldn’t have happened.” Jamie Lynn, incidently, was crowned high school homecoming queen later that year.

While Porcelana Patino, the New York auditioner who lost 20 lbs through a militaristic training regime, was featured on last Wednesday’s Idol, she was at her dad’s bedside in a New York City hospital ICU. Porcelana’s father was struck by a hit and run driver on January 22 at 5 am while he was walking to work.  He suffered a broken shoulder, leg and ribs.  Porcelana says, “My dad just woke up. My father’s response was ‘I’m going to miss the show, the show, I’m going to miss the show.’ All he is interested in is watching his daughter on the freaking show. Can you believe that?”

When Nichole Gatzman performed what I thought was a pretty good rendition of Bonnie Raitt’s “Something to Talk About” Simon inexplicably told her “You’re very old fashioned, and you sing through your nose. And it’s a shame.”  Both Randy and Simon turned her down flat. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who thought Nichole should have been given a shot in Hollywood, as she explains here:

“Having America thinking I was good and wondering why I didn’t make it . . . I’m thankful people are calling and getting on the boards,” Gatzman said.

Nichole was a guest on an Idol-themed Larry King Live Thursday night.

Also featured on Larry King Thursday–Sherman Pore who I think may be everyone’s favorite Idol at the moment.  Sherman is the 64 year old contestant who petitioned the show to audition-despite his age–by collecting signatures.  He started the project as a way to keep up the spirits of his seriously ill girlfriend. She died two days before his audition.  Here are some excerpts from his Larry King Live interview:

She helped me cook it up. About three weeks before I lost her, I found a little blurb in the newspaper that said “American Idol” was getting ready to audition. And she had been pushing me for years to do something with my singing. I would come home every night singing love songs to her.

I promised her I would [go through with the audition]. She asked me no matter what happened to her, she asked me to promise that I would go ahead with my singing and share it with as many people as possible, because I had done it for her so often.

She had ovarian cancer that metastasized everywhere. It moved pretty fast, and, you know, I used to call her at work and sing a love song to her every now and then. And one day I called her and I forgot to ask the — ask for her extension number before I started singing. About halfway through the song, the operator says, “who is this? Who is this?” And I finished the song and said, “you have just been serenaded by the phantom crooner.” Just got around the office and she laughed about it, but she didn’t tell anybody. She came home and told me that night.

Few days later, she called me and says, Karen is having a rough day today. This is her extension number. Would you call her and give her a — and she told me that night that this turned Karen’s day around. So every now and then, she would call me and I would fix somebody’s day.

Idol fans have started an online petition to get Sherman back on the show for the finale.  Something tells me the petition isn’t necessary.  I have no doubt Sherman will be back for the finale.

thanks lisab, as always, you rawk

The San Antonio audition was originally scheduled for tonight.  My DVR video, in fact, is labeled “San Antonio”.  A last minute switcheroo by TPTB has San Antonio, TX closing out the auditions next Tuesday.

Tonight, it’s all about Los Angeles.  The initial audition cattle call took place in the Rose Bowl, in Pasadena.  A camera pans a massive crowd as LA native Katharine McPhee singing “Over The Rainbow” is played in the background.  How ’bout those Open Toes?

Olivia Newton John is tonight’s guest judge. The video intro on Olivia features a montage of truly bad 80’s haircuts. She tells everyone they do a good job, even when they suck.  Why are there guest judges again?

Ryan starts off the show by claiming that ”some people call Birmingham Idol Country.”  Me? I call it the Pittsburgh of the South.  Ahem.  Anyway. Birmingham has produced two Idol winners-Ruben Studdard and Taylor Hicks, a runner-up, Bo Bice, and Diana DeGarmo–who was born in Birmingham, but did not grow up there.

So, it was about time, I suppose, that American Idol held their auditions in Birmingham.  You know, make it easy so the eventual winners don’t have to do all that travelling.  Heh.

The Birmingham episode was blissfully light on completely horrid auditions and featured some very talented contestants.  I hope the worst is behind us.

Season 6 Contestant Update

So little time, so many contestants…

Sundance Head - Check out Sundance’s dad, Roy Head, singing his fabulous hit “Treat Her Right” back in 1965.  Here he is swinging with some groovy go-go dancers on Shindig and check out his dance moves here.  Roy was a blue-eyed James Brown.  This Houston Chronicle story hints that Sundance may have gone deep into the competition…

On Feb. 3 Roy will headline the Gulf Coast Music Hall of Fame ceremony, but right now he’s mostly fielding questions about his son.

“I got 6,850 phone calls last night,” he said Wednesday, chuckling. “I spent two hours just answering them. Then they started again at 6 o’clock this morning. I said, God, don’t you know I’m a musician, too? That’s early.”

Idol typically keeps things under wraps, but Roy said his son feels good about his prospects.

“He called from California last night, crying through the telephone. He said to my wife, ‘Mama I might’ve made it.’ “

The Brits are getting a slightly different version of Idol than we are here in the States.  Tom Lowe, a Brit who is living in Boston, auditioned in Seattle, but his audition was featured only in the British version of Idol.  You can check Tom out here.  He was part of a British Boy band called North and South.  Tom attended Harvard and has done some film work, rather controversially, for Tourism Massachusetts

Here’s an interesting story on the “Amish” guy Troy Benaham who auditioned in Minneapolis. According to this story, Troy is actually Mennonite.  There is a big difference between the Amish and the Mennonites.  Mennonites have electricity, watch TV and drive cars.  Ok?  In fact, Troy has a cell phone.  So, there you go.

One of my favorite contestants so far is Melissa Doolittle, the shy backup singer with the incredible voice.  Melissa auditioned in Memphis TN.  Check out this article. An administrator at Belmont college, where Melissa studied had this to say about her:

“She just has an amazing voice and, beyond that, she is an incredible person,” he said. “What you saw on the show with her seeming to not be a pushy person, that is exactly her. She is a very service-oriented person. What they don’t see is when she gets on stage, she commands the audience.”

When I reviewed Sean Michel’s audition in my Memphis recap, I said there was probably a backstory we haven’t heard yet.  Sean is the contestant with the long beard and even longer hair who sang Johnny Cash’s “God’s Gonna Cut You Down.”  Sean does have a story, and you can read it on his MySpace.  He’s a devout Christian singer/songwriter who has already released an indie album. You can also listen to snippets of his music there.

Ottawa, Canada native Jory Steinberg lives in Santa Monica now, where she’s been pursing a musical career.  Jory sang “Chains” at her New York audition with incredible range and pitch.  You can read about her here.  In Canada, she was considered the “Next Alanis” and had a 7 record deal with Canadian producer and Idol regular, David Foster.  Her deal fell through before her first record was released.

“Best Friends” Amanda Coluccio and Antonella Barba who auditioned in New York are featured in this article.  The judges favored Antonella over Amanda although both were advanced to Hollywood.

“You couldn’t ask for better students or best friends,” Coppola said. “They were joined at the hip . . . best friends to the end.”

Expect some tears between these two during the Hollywood rounds…

Here’s what Jenry Bejarano had to say about auditioning in front of Paula:

“For Paula, obviously, I dressed nice. Dress as comfortably as I can, try to look sexy for the girl. You know what I’m saying?” Bejarano said.

Jenry is the handsome 16 year old singer from New Jersey who swept Paula off her feet at the New York auditions with his rendition of “I’d Give Anything to Fall in Love”.  Paula and the boys…watch out.

Finally, Kia Thorton wowed the judges in New York with her rendition of Aretha Franklin’s “Ain’t No Way”.  Like Jory Steinberg and Tom Lowe, she is no newcomer to showbuisiness:

She was still in her teens when “Lately,” a single she cut while a member of the R&B trio Divine, peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 1998. A second single, a cover of George Michael’s “One More Try” made it to No. 29 a year later. The group toured internationally, supporting ‘N Sync and Britney Spears, Thornton said.

Kia spills the beans in this article.  She did not advance past the Hollywood Rounds.

UPDATE: Added screencaps, click on the jump.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the two-hour audition is too much.  Unfortunately, I think FOX is going to milk Idol for all it can.  Besides Idol and 24, the network’s ratings are in the dumper.  According to this article from TV Week, “The network intends to air at least 45 hours of Idol-matching and possibly exceeding the hours logged in the 2006 season”.  I love the show, but there really really is such a thing as too much of a good thing…

This week’s shows have dropped the whole freaks-on-parade flavah that made watching last week’s auditions feel like a dirty experience.  I’m relieved.  However, as I said last night, I’m still not terribly impressed with the talent, even as a few of the “bad” auditions make me chuckle.  The thrill is gone?  I hope not…

The presence of guest judges is questionable in itself, but Carol Bayer Sager?  Nobody under 40 even knows who she is.  Who owed who what favor that resulted in Sager getting the guest host gig?  And like Jewel before her, she added nothing.  Actually, she said very little, and I suspect her heavily botoxed face is what really kept her from speaking much.  Seriously.  Randy, Paula and Simon have this whole chemistry thing going on.  Plopping in a guest judge is pointless.

Check out Paula Abdul rockin’ the school-girl look.  Maybe she’s tryin’ to catch some jailbait.  Heh. Continue reading ‘Auditions - New York City’

Tonight’s audition episode is only an hour long.  I’m glad.  These two hour audition shows are murder.  Thankfully, after watching, I don’t feel like I need a shower.  The singers are either deluded or talented, or funny.  There are no pathetic cases that make me want to look away.  I even chuckle a few times.  However, for the most part, I’m not blown away by the talent. More on the AI Panel in Pasadena

USA Today posted an interesting follow-up on the American Idol panel that took place Saturday at the television critics’ winter tour in Pasadena, CA.  According to Idol producer, Ken Warwick, the judges aren’t meaner than usual–he claims there are more “bad” auditions than before.  He says, “It’s not a conscious decision…It’s just that the further we go in the series, there are less and less good singers, so the numbers are made up by more bad ones.”

Huh?  Out of the thousands and thousands of people who audition, they can’t find a handful of really incredibly talented singers? Are they screening out good singers for good Tee Vee “characters”?  ’Cause, in my opinion, the reason Season 6 has been so deadly dull so far isn’t because they’ve been featuring more “bad” auditions–actually the ratio seems to be about the same to last year–it’s that the good auditions have NOT been as good as in previous years.

Let’s just say, my mind has yet to be blown by anything I’ve heard yet. TPTB promise, however, there will be better shows ahead:

Warwick says he kicked off the season with some of the worst audition cities, because viewers love train-wreck performances — more than 37 million viewers tuned in Tuesday and Wednesday, Fox’s biggest entertainment nights ever — but, says judge Randy Jackson, better singers are on the horizon as the auditions move south: “Birmingham (Tuesday, 8 ET/PT) was good. Memphis (Jan. 30) was good, too.”

Let’s hope so.

As far as allowing mentally challenged contestants through the screening process?  Warwick and Cowell comment: Continue reading ‘More on the AI Panel in Pasadena’

Hollywood Week - Update!

The Name Game

Reality TV Magazine has started playing the Domain name game.  Last year, the producers registered all 44 or so semi-finalists on the same day, December 9, after Hollywood Week.  All it took was a Whois search to figure out the identities of all the finalists.

This year the producers got smart. It appears that they registered the Top 40 through private domain registrations. Reality TV Magazine has performed whois searches on all the contestants featured so far on Idol.  They found that Anna KearnsSanjaya Malakar, and Shyamali Malakar all had their names registered as domain names on November 18, 2006, the day after the Hollywood rounds ended.  All were registered by Domains by Proxy–a service that hides the identity of the entity registering the domain names.

There are rumors that Anna and Sanjaya have made the Top 40. I expect that, since this can of worms has been opened, there will be more to come…

BTW, there are rumors that the Top 24 have not been chosen yet as I previously reported.  I can’t substantiate that rumor at this time.

Idol Forums has a complete list of Idol rumors here.

Have American Idol judges become too cruel?  That’s been the theme of recent Idol commentary found ’round the net.  Even Rosie O’Donnell has gotten into the act.

Lather, rinse, repeat peeps.  Here are some quotes:

The Seattle Times says, “Considering it’s the biggest kid on the block, ‘American Idol’ is becoming quite the bully.”

And

The Charlotte Observer weighs in, “Plumbing the depths of people who will do anything to get on television, ‘Idol’ has veered sharply… No longer a feel-good talent hunt, the early rounds of TV’s No. 1 show have evolved into a showcase of emotionally fragile specimens from America’s stockpile of the vocally deluded.”

Quotes from this year’s press coverage?  NOPE. These quotes are reactions to Season 5 auditions.  Last year, the complaints of cruelty were also loud and long as I reported here.  Folks from GLAAD and National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance were livid, as a matter of fact.

I remember specifically, during last season’s auditions, the cameras lingering after a contestant left the room, and the judges–even Paula–proceeding to mock the clueless.  Remember that fragile transgendered teenager that was sent out of the room crying?  Are the judges any meaner this year?  I don’t think so. Why is the press complaining as if “meaness” is some sort of new development during the AI audition rounds?  Eh, it gives them something to talk about…

And, as the press rattles their sabers, TPTB step in to defend themselves, as always. Peter Liguori, FOX president of entertainment, had this to say, “I think this season is just a continuation of what’s been a very successful formula…The debate is what makes the show successful…It does seem that more people are coming to the show. I think they know what to expect. I think they have to appreciate the spirit in which that commentary is given”

During an American Idol panel at the  television critics’ winter tour in Pasadena yesterday, Simon Cowell had this to say about his own behavior, “I take your point…Which is that it’s a singing competition, and why should I be calling [someone] a bush baby? But we never try to censor the show, and there are times, trust me, when I watch it back and think, ‘God, I wish I hadn’t said that.’”

Going to Hollywood

I did this last year…I captured all the kids who were pictured in the “Going To Hollywood” montage. Season 5 auditions featured longer montages with more contestants pictured who weren’t featured during the show. Having said that, I decided to post the caps anyway. Ford is sponsoring the montage like they did last year. The caption this year is “Who has the Edge?” These are thumbnails. Click on the pic to see a larger view.

ETA: I’ve added some caps to my Minnesota and Seattle audition recaps.

Bits and Pieces - Season 6 Contestants

I’ve had a busy week, peeps.  I apologize, I’m a little behind.  I’ve got a bunch of updates to post on the Season 6 contestants who have appeared in this week’s audition rounds.  I’ll probably spend the rest of the weekend posting all my info.  This post will probably be updated at least once or twice.

Found this handy resource at Rollingstone.com.  This blog is tracking the MySpace pages of all contestants who have been featured on Idol so far.  Here’s your Minneapolis auditioners and your Seattle auditioners.  Very handy.  For instance, you’ve got Steven Thoen, Nicholas Zitzmann and Blake Lewis (methinks we’re going to be seeing a lot more of Blake, I hear he had a very good week)

Your 15 Minutes Have Begun

Kenneth Briggs and Jonathan Jayne (right) will appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live tonight.  Oh boy.  While Kenneth is rather upset that Simon made fun of his looks (Simon said he looked like a “bush monkey”), Jonathan is thrilled with his new-found celebrity, and can’t understand the backlash to his appearance.  Well, the fact that he can’t understand it may be the point…

Meanwhile, Steven “Red” Thoen and his Mom are also
