Ratings News Week 8

Here’s yer updated Season 6 Ratings chart.

Preliminary ratings from the Hollywood Reporter for Week 8:

Tuesday:

American Idol was the night’s top show in all key demographics, with Nielsen estimating 27.8 million viewers and a 10.9 rating/29 share in adults 18-49. That’s up 4% in viewership and 3% in the demo compared to the same week last year.

Wednesday:

The performance “Idol” featuring the remaining eight female contestants drew 28.5 million viewers and 11.1 rating/30 share among adults 18-49, according to preliminary data from Nielsen Media Research.

Thursday:

“Idol” walked to an easy victory at 8 p.m…American Idol (27.4 million, 10.3/28) adults 18-49.

Check out Season 5 ratings for a comparison:

Tue (Top 8 Girls)  28.5 mill 11.8/31
Wed (Top 8 Guys)  30.3 mill  12.4/32
Thu (Top 16 Results) 27.1 mill 10.8/28

My source for Season 5 numbers is TV Week.com. According to their figures (they quote Nielsen, just like the Hollywood Reporter) is that Tuesday and Wednesday’s ratings are down this year, Thursday’s are up by just a smidgen.

Whatever ratings increase Season 6 started out with over Season 5 at the beginning of the season seems to have dropped back.  The comparisons are fun, aren’t they? Heh.

Top 16 Elimination Roundup

Here are exit interview transcripts from MTV. And from Entertainment Weekly, Antonella Barba and Sabrina Sloan and Jared Cotter and Sundance Head

  • All four contestants were surprised to be eliminated.
  • A few of the contestants mentioned the songs they were planning to sing next week for Diana Ross week.  And yes, it looks like the Top 12 get to choose from the Diana Ross catalog–a good thing for the girls, maybe not so much for the boys.
  • Antonella Barba does not rule out the possibility of posing for a men’s magazine.
  • The Idol publicist would not allow Antonella to answer many questions about the photo scandal.  When she did, she appeared to be reading off a prepared statement.
  • Jared Cotter claims he saw Ryan’s cue card before he read it.  He said even when he saw it, he still could not believe it.
  • Sundance Head would have considered singing his dad, Roy Head’s, hit single if there had been an opportunity.
  • After the show Thursday, the AI psychiatrist broke the news to Sundance that his second cousin had died in a house fire earlier that day.
  • According to TMZ.com, Sundance told Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS morning radio show that “One of the guys remaining on the show–whose name he wouldn’t mention–thinks he already has the competition in the bag.  You can listen to the interview here.

Top 16 Results

First things first.  Eliminated tonight:

Antonella Barba
Sabrina Sloan
Jared Cotter
Sundance Head

Tonight’s results: Not exactly what I expected.

What I did expect:  Vote-splitting between the big voiced divas LaKisha Jones, Sabrina Sloan and Jordin Sparks with Sabrina getting the short end of the stick.  Sabrina has a powerful voice, but was definitely outclassed both vocally and personality-wise by her strong competition.  Her elimination was not a shock.

Also not a shock–sweet, winsome Sanjaya Malakar advancing to the Top 12.  He’s got people.  And those people aren’t voting for him because he’s a great singer.  But that is nothing new in Idol land.

Jared Cotter’s elimination was also not a shock.  He was really the last of the cannon fodder to be eliminated.  While his vocals weren’t bad, his smarmy manner was really off-putting. Ryan asked Jared if he was surprised to be going home, and he said, completely seriously–YES.  I think Jared may have been a little out of touch.

Antonella Barba said goodbye tonight–heading off to Maxim or Stuff, no doubt.  I really believed she’d make the Top 12 and last at least a few more weeks.  Maybe all publicity actually is NOT good publicity.  It appears that her subpar performances, bad attitude and negative press finally caught up with her.

I didn’t think Sundance Head would be going so soon either.  In fact, I thought he had the potential to be a Kellie Pickler–the type of contestant whose vocal skills are secondary to a personality that folks either love or hate.  Not only did I think he’d make it to the Top 12, but I thought he was definitely a mid-packer.  I’m still a little baffled by this one. Maybe after a good night’s sleep I’ll come up with something.

The big shocker:  Mousy Haley Scarnato advances to the Top 12.  I don’t think anybody saw that coming. Maybe, Simon’s harsh criticisms elicited the pity vote.  Or just maybe, Haley represents a group of folks who aren’t interested in R&B or rock music. Haley may have had a pool of voters all to herself that was large enough to advance her past Sabrina who was more than likely splitting votes with several contestants.

Diana Ross will guest star on the show next week.

I’ll post a full re-cap tomorrow, including more on tonight’s cheesetastic group sing, the big mid-final charity special, and Carrie Underwood performing her new single “Wasted.”

************

First, the group sing.  This week’s horrifying 70’s hit, up for potential slaughter:  “Stuck in the Middle With You.”  The contestants try to melisma-up this moldy-oldie with typically hilarious results. The cheesy group sing–may it never stop. Continue reading ‘Top 16 Results’

Top 8 Girls Perform

Ryan, dressed from head to toe in black tonight, introduces the Top 8 girls, who are surely on their way to kicking some Top 8 boy butt. He goes into a slight panic when he realizes that Paula is MIA.  Where could she be? Ryan reminds us that tomorrow he will be announcing the most important, most groundbreaking Idol project EVAH!  I’m looking forward to that letdown.  Paula finally appears in time for Jordin Sparks, tonight’s first performance. Top 8 Guys Perform

The boys. Oy. Tonight, bookended between 2 good performances is a whole lotta suck.  Simon looks alternately distressed and bored the entire evening. Several times during this first live performance show of the season, Simon complains about the lack of “wow” factor and how disappointing the boys performances are. Simon speaks the truth.

At the top of the show, Ryan tell us, hyperbolically, ”Not only will we give you your Top 12 on Thursday, we’re gonna announce one of the most important events in Idol history!”  Yeah, I’ll bet.

This week, the contestants are asked to share something “revealing” about themselves Continue reading ‘Top 8 Guys Perform’

Tonight’s bootees are: Nick Pedro, AJ Tabaldo, Alaina Alexander and Leslie Hunt. Tonight’s fab group sing: “Joy to the World”.  And special guest performer: Kellie Pickler.

Ryan tells the audience that over 32 million votes came in before introducing a recap of the performances. Why is Sundance screaming?  AJ is so excited that he sang well. Sadly, his enthusiasm will not last. I can’t wait until the results show is cut back to 30 minutes.

Yay!  It’s time for a Pointy Pose! This week, the kids sing “Joy to the World.” Not quite as cheesetastic as last week, but I’ll take what I can get.

Ryan says that’s it’s time to get down to business. A guy will be eliminated first. Continue reading ‘Top 20 Results’

Top 10 Girls Perform

It’s the girls turn to sing and dedicate their performances to loved ones.  I think the boys edged out the girls this week.  At the very least, they picked interesting songs–by Ray LaMontagna, Jamiroquai, Irving Berlin and Jason Mraz.  The girls had the typical Celine-Whitney-Christina triumvirate–with a little Beyonce thrown in on the side.  YAWN.  I was a little bored tonight.  Even writing this recap took some effort. AI Scandal - Here We Go Again

Yeah, there’s scandal every year.  We know this.  Generally, when something negative comes to light about a contestant, particularly if it’s something from their past, I’m really not interested.  However, if it looks like past indiscretions may jeopardize a contestant continuing in the competition, then I feel obliged to address it.

Reluctantly, here is my obligatory post on the Antonella Barba photo scandal.  Sigh.

Here are a few details from tonight’s results show.  I’ll post a full recap in the morning.

Tonight’s bootees:

  • Amy Krebs
  • Nicole Tranquillo
  • Paul Kim
  • Rudy Cardenas

No big surprises there.

Chris Daughtry’s song “Home” was played over the bootee’s exit packages.  So, it’s official. “Home” is the boot song.

At the top of the show, Ryan announced this season’s lineup of Idol guest stars:

  • Diana Ross
  • Jon Bon Jovi
  • Jennifer Lopez
  • Gwen Stefani
  • Tony Bennett
  • Martina McBride
  • Lulu and Peter Noone - Ryan added there will be a British Invasion night.
  • Barry Gibb

Fantasia was the guest performer.  She announced that she would play Miss Celie in the Broadway production of “Color Purple”.  Fantasia’s opening night is April 11.  Quincy Jones, one of “Purple’s” producers was in the audience to promote the show.

Rumor has it that Kellie Pickler will appear next Wednesday to sing her new single “I Wonder”

***********************

The show starts with a re-cap of this week’s performances.

And then Ryan introduces the gang for a group number, and I COULDN’T BE MORE EXCITED! OMG ELEVENTYONE!!!111!!!  Regular readers know I am a huge fan of what some witty poster over at Television With Out Pity dubbed the Pointy!Pose! Season 4 saw a demise of the cheesy, badly choreographed group number which was a regular staple of Seasons 1-3.  Pointy Pose refers to how the number would end (best if it was a medley)–the contestants frozen in a pose, raised finger pointing heaven-ward. I am night-before-vacation excited that the Top 24 is starting tonight.  Yes, I’m very aware that’s kinda lame.  What can I say…

*******

UPDATE:  According to USA Today, Fantasia will be the surprise guest on Thursday’s results show. Fantasia will step into the role of Miss Celie in the Broadway production of “The Color Purple.”  No doubt, that’s the good news she’ll be announcing.

OMG! My Tee Vee sez I can download “bad” audition ring tones!!!1111!

Why the eff would I want to do that? Geez.

Claire, one of my intrepid readers counted for me (thank yew):

  • 9 breaks
  • 67 commercials

Holy Carp!  These two hour shows kill me.  I think 90 minutes would have been a perfect amount of time to fit in all of the performances plus the video packages.  But then, s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g out the proceedings = 67 commercials and more moola for TPTB.  So there ya go.

Now, on with the show.

Oh my. Oh no.  None of the guys brought their A game tonight, and a few of the performances were either downright bizarre (Sundance), boring (Sanjaya) or just plain bad (Paul).  Even the better performances either lacked zip or were pitchy.

An inauspicious start to the season, to be sure…
