David Cook Still At the Top of iTunes, and Other Chart News

According to Rickey, who has been keeping track of the Season 7 Idols on the iTunes charts, David Cook’s “Always Be My Baby”, as of 4/20, has been #1 on the iTunes Top 100 4 days in a row.

Also, I posted the Billboard charts on Friday. The chart has its own header tab, check above, or use this handy link. As you can see, the Idol Gives Back performances did very well on the charts this week.

Daughtry’s “What About Now” debuted on the Hot 100 at #18. It helped move his album, Daughtry, from #36 to #15 on the Billboard 200 this week. Jordin Sparks, Jordin Sparks moves to the #17 spot on the Billboard 200, no doubt helped by her appearance with Chris Brown on the Idol Gives Back week results show. “No Air” climbs to #3 on the Hot 100. Not too shabby!

Other Idol IGB performances on the Hot 100 this week: Carrie Underwood, “Praying for Time”, #27, Top 8, “Shout to the Lord”, Annie Lennox, “Many Rivers to Cross”. And, The Top 8, “Don’t Stop the Music” is #23 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles Chart.

“Over the Rainbow” by Brother Iz debuts on the Hot Digital Tracks chart at #20 and re-enters the Hot Digital Songs chart at #11. Check out the chart to see how the IGB singles did on The Hot Digital Tracks and Hot Digital Songs chart. Also, check out the chart for Kirsten’s complete Idol sales report for last week.

More on Michael Johns Elimination - Video and Some Stats That May Surprise You

Michael Johns on Today

Today did a piece this morning on Michael Johns elimination. Mandisa has a little cameo. The report states that Michael was considered a front runner from the beginning, which isn’t exactly true, but it is a good retrospective of Michael’s run and what possibly went wrong. They compare his ouster to Chris Daughtry’s sudden ejection at 4th place in Season 5. In the end, they give Michael’s elimination a positive spin–that like Chris, not winning Idol might work in his favor. Hey, Bucky Covington isn’t complaining!

I just posted my thoughts in last night’s recap.

And, check out Kirsten’s stats regarding performance order from today’s headlines thread comments section. 80% of this season’s bootees performed in the first half. A whopping 40% started first. Very interesting stuff.

  • Michael Johns

WTF? !!!??111??!

Forget iTunes, forget TIVO (I can’t believe so many news outlets picked up that shiz) Nigel Lythgoe told us exactly who was going home yesterday morning in an interview on Sirius satellite radio. I even posted a paraphrase of his quote on the blog. But did I listen? No I did not. I went straight into denial mode. I couldn’t imagine the rest of this competition without Michael Johns.

Idol Gives Back - Mini Recap

Check out my video recap right here.

Give to Idol Gives Back at americanidol.com - I did! Also, iTunes performances will be available with all proceeds going to IGB.

This year’s extravaganza was much better organized than last year’s attempt to shmoosh the fundraiser and results show together. Although, I wonder if the ratings suffered (ETA: They did. Roughly 17.60 million viewers and a 6.7 rating/18 share among adults 18-49) without that “carrot” producer Nigel Lythgoe found so distasteful. The night cut between performances recorded at the Kodak theater Sunday, and the Idols and Ryan live at the CBS studios. The Top 12 were there maning phones, although David Hernandez and Amanda Overmyer were so far in the back you could barely see them. Yes, call in now and you can talk to an Idol! And maybe even Ryan Seacrest, who would grab the phone to chat with callers. Was there really a need to pretend that the entire telethon was live? There’s no way Ryan and the kids could be in two places at once, so what’s the point?

Season 7 - Idol Gives Back — Video Recap

Video!

My recap from last night is finally up. Argh. I dread recapping tonight’s marathon. 2 1/2 hours! But for once, I’m not going to complain about the extra-long Idol tonight. It’s all for a good cause, y’all. I’m even going to put aside my cynicism for one night. Sure, the motives of TPTB are never entirely pure, but who cares? The end result is a good one, so I’m not going to sweat it.

Besides, according to this recent New York Times article, last year’s 75+ million dollars appears to have been well managed and went to many needy charities. It’s all good.

One of the organizations involved with Idol Gives Back is the One campaign to end global hunger. They’ll be asking for support tonight. If you’d like to sign up, I made it easy. Just use the handy dandy banner on your left.

Spoilers for tonight. Pictures from the Kodak Sunday night.

Thanks, Lawrence, for the video…

I suppose this is going to be a tradition in Idol-land. Gearing up for the big Idol Gives Back telecast will have the contestants singing songs of “Inspiration”. It became clear to me last night why this is such a bad idea. Nearly every Idol chose their song for a sentimental reason, rather than considering the bigger questions of strategy and suitability. The wind-up was a night of mostly uninspired performances. The best of night was Jason Castro who brought it, just when he needed it. His rendition of the lovely “Over the Rainbow” was the performance of the evening.

Mariah Carey Duet with Marvin Gaye is Off - Ellen DeGeneres Won’t Be Hosting IGB

We dodged a bullet! In a conference call with the press on Wednesday afternoon, Nigel Lythgoe said that the planned duet between Mariah Carey and the extremely dead Marvin Gaye is off:

In a Wednesday conference call with reporters, American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe offered updates on this year’s “Idol Gives Back” fundraising effort, to air Wednesday, April 9. For starters, Lythgoe cleared the air on talk that Mariah Carey would perform a duet with the late Marvin Gaye, a la Celine Dion and Elvis Presley a year ago. “Unfortunately, it’s not [happening],” he shared. “We couldn’t get the rights to music with Marvin, so we had to cancel it.” (Chalk up one unsettling/eerie bullet dodged.)

Marvin’s heirs undoubtedly said: No. No. No…

Ellen DeGeneres won’t be hosting Idol Gives Back from the Kodak theater after all. That part of the special will tape on Sunday to a paying crowed and will now by hosted by… Ryan Seacrest!

Lythgoe also addressed the breaking news that Ellen DeGeneres would not be able to shoulder half of the hosting duties for the evening. “Ellen, we were told, couldn’t do it due to a personal production pressure,” he said. Filling her shoes/sneakers will be… Ryan Seacrest! Will the seemingly busiest man in show business be worked even harder? Lythgoe shrugged off the notion. “We’ve got a lot of co-hosts, so it isn’t like last year,” he explained. “There are a lot of really good people coming on that stage to introduce people.”

And, that IGB twist I posted an item about earlier? I have a feeling that ain’t happening:

As previously announced, no one will get voted off the show during Idol Gives Back. The American Idol results show will air on the following night after Idol Gives Back. When asked if he considered creating some other type of carrot to get viewers to tune in, Lythgoe responded, “Yeah of course we did. For my money, this isn’t about a carrot. I don’t want to cheat the audience here. This is about a wonderful show with incredible talent involved with it, asking you to do something about what’s going on in the world, end of story. After that, carrots are just misleading the audience and stink.
