Top 16 - Idol Exit Interviews

Danny Noriega:

  • On his “Christmas Message” You Tube Clip, “That’s something that is so, like, forever ago that I used to do. It’s almost like another person ago. That’s when I was younger. It was more like an acting thing I used to do, personalities and stuff like that. I’m actually kind of shocked that they used that one. There’s more interesting ones. [He laughs.]”
  • How he handles the pressure of “scandals”, “It’s just really weird. Doing something as simple as making an acting video — which I did, like, so many moons ago — something little like that, that was made for humor, gets blown up out of proportion and can be kind of shown as your character, and it’s not the kind of person that I am, you know what I mean? I just think it’s pretty sad that people will do that just to tear down somebody’s success. We’re all trying to be somebody in life right now, and we don’t understand why people would try to cut us down by doing things like that.”
  • Did his unique personality help him, “You always want to stay true to yourself. I think the other contestants were all different, but I definitely was, like, really, really different. [He laughs.] But I wasn’t trying to be different or anything, it just came naturally.”
  • On being a “role model” to young Idol fans, “I love the little fan letters that I’m getting from these little kids telling me that they admire me … for being myself and that I’ve showed them that you can be different and still be successful. … I really like to inspire those little kids that think that they can’t do anything because they’re different in ways, whether it’s sexuality or their race or anything like that. It’s fine to be yourself and be successful.”
  • How he felt standing with Chikezie, “For a moment there, I thought that I was staying. Then I got this really ugly feeling, and out of nowhere, I just felt like I was going home. Then I started crying because I didn’t want to see Ramiele’s reaction. And then, I started seeing her cry a little bit, then I started crying more. Then it was just a big ol’ cryfest!”
  • On being a “sassy” personality, “The way I’m on stage to Simon and Ryan are totally different to how I am with fans or with other people. That’s just my reaction — it’s like sarcasm and is just the way we play around with each other. I don’t really act like that with random people on the street. It’s just more of a sarcastic, telling-off kind of talk. I just want to make that clear: I am not like that 24/7!”
  • On his song choices, “They’re just the songs that stood out to me. I don’t know. If I could do something over again, I would definitely pick something else other than ”Jailhouse Rock,” but there’s no do-overs.”
  • What’s next, “I definitely want to get into TV, be like a TV personality. Get a hosting job or something — I want to do something with my personality. I’ll do singing here or there, but I kind of want to do some TV stuff. Have a little show or something.”

If I could trade Danny Noriega for Chikezie and Asia’h Epperson for Kristy Lee Cook, I’d be deliriously happy with this Top 12. The fierce and fabulous Danny Noriega would have added much entertainment to this year’s cast. It’s too bad we’ll never see his break-out performance. It would have come. The boy can sing.

Asia’h Epperson is a talented singer who suffered from mundane song choices. Kristy Lee Cook pretty much coasted into the Top 12 on her looks and the good graces of TPTB, who seem to love her. Once the boys and girls are competing together, I predict she’ll have a tough time.

Overall, however, I’m happy with the cast and look forward to the competition, and more break-out performances from David Cook, Jason Castro and Brooke White. Carly Smithson is winning fans (well, maybe not the Fanjayas. Heh.) and will go deep. If Micheal Johns steps up his game, he’ll go far as well. Danny Archuleta, the Boy Wonder, will no doubt march his way right up to the Top 3 and beyond.

I dig Blake Lewis’s new single.

My recap, after the JUMP.

Season 7 Top 8 Girls - Performance

TMZ is reporting who-sang-what (again) at the girls dress rehearsal here:

The girls go LIVE tonight.

The guys had a great night Tuesday. Did the girls up the ante? Nope. There weren’t any truly terrible performances this week, but the girls, for the most part, performed rote renditions of uninspired song selections.

The girls’ video clips feature their most embarrassing moments. The girls moments are as boring as their song choices. I’m not going to even recount them here.

Who I hope makes it to the Top 12: Brooke White, Amanda Overmeyer, Ramiele Malubay and Carly Smithson, in that order.

Who probably will make it: Carly Smithson, Kristy Lee Cook and Syesha Mercardo have had plenty of buzz and generous praise from the judges. I think they are a lock. Asia’h Epperson and her killer dead-daddy backstory will probably make it into the Top 12, as will Ramiele Malubay, with a little help from her Pinoy friends. That leaves Brooke White and Amanda Overmeyer–who are wild cards. They had good performances tonight and are unique enough to have their own little fanbases (including Vote For The Worst for Amanda) who could power them through. Kady Malloy is a long shot. I’m thinking she’s toast.

Tonight, Paula Abdul is truly off the hook. Keep the wackiness quotient up Paula! We love you! Randy Jackson once again reminds me why he’s my least favorite judge, and Simon is a Cranky, Cranky, Crankster!

The show begins…

Tonight’s show–short, sweet and thoroughly enjoyable. For the most part, the guys really step it up. I can tell you right now who I want in the Top 12: Jason Castro, David Cook, Danny Noriega and David Hernandez. It’s time for Luke Menard to go home. I’m not even going to bother speculating about Michael Johns and David Archuletta. TPTB love them. They were destined for the Top 12 from the very beginning of this competition.

The show goes live tonight for the first time–at last. When the show goes live, it truly feels as if the contestants are performing a high-wire act. Anything can happen, and it’s thrilling. The pressure is finally ON for everybody.

Top 20 - Idol Exit Interviews

Jason Yeager:

He’s just a tad bit bitter.  I don’t blame him.

  • What he thought went wrong, “Well, you know, I was kind of in a lose-lose situation. The first week, Simon bashed me — you know, all of them really kind of criticized me for being too old-fashioned. They criticized me for not doing a ‘’singer’s song.” So, I was at a loss for words. I didn’t really know what to say or do with myself at that point.”
  • On choosing a song, “First of all, you’ve got themes, so you’re restrained to a decade. Then you’re listening to all these different songs. The producers have lists of songs that are cleared for television, so you can pick off that list — but what are the odds that any of those songs are really going to be you? There’s not a whole heck of a lot of time given to do really good research and to listen and try to find a killer song for yourself. And sometimes you’re back to the drawing board if the song isn’t approved. There’s so much more that goes into it that people don’t see. Some artists are completely off-limits that I really enjoy and would really showcase me. You have a couple of hands tied behind your back.
  • More on song choice, “I had some Boyz II Men lined up because they were thinking about doing ’90s week. Next week was going to be ’80s, so I thought, ”Well, great, Journey would totally showcase my vocals” — but we ran into problems with getting rights. The killer song for me never really seemed to pan out. I don’t want to place blame on song selection. I wish I could have found that one song… I had so much against me.”
  • Like what? “Nobody knew who I was before I showed up in the top 24. Colton [Berry] was in the same boat; Garrett [Haley] was in the same boat. It’s kind of sad sometimes. I think you’re definitely at a disadvantage, and I don’t care what people say: You are at a disadvantage when you know that you were there, but according to America, it’s like, ”Why didn’t they show you during your first round?” I don’t know. ”How come they didn’t show you during Hollywood?” I don’t know. ”How come they haven’t done any backstories on you?” I have no idea. So now I’m faced with being in the top 24 — and blessed to be there — but now I’ve got to do something that’s going to get people behind me. It just made me laugh when Simon was like, ”I think your problem is that you don’t stand out.” I just laughed to myself on the inside, because I did everything everyone else did — all the interviews and whatnot — but I have absolutely no say over what gets used on the show. It was just disappointing. I have so much more I could have shown people if I had the chance. Right now, I’m just trying to swallow all that up.”

Top 10 Girls - Performance

“Let’s begin tonight with song selection,” says Ryan.

So, Ryan, Are you and the judges going to discuss how hard it is to get a song cleared? Or, the fact that the kids only have 50 songs to choose from, and, as rumor has it, they are more than likely not going to get their first choice, unless they are a favored-one?

No? Randy, Paula and Simon going to keep blaming the kids for their “poor song choices?” Well, alrighty then.

These songs TPTB picked for the kids? They suck. The horrible songs the kids have to choose from are really keeping the semis from being as entertaining and awe inspiring as they could be. And it’s NOT the kid’s fault.

The gang is calling Simon “Mr. Happy” now. How fitting.

Tonight, the girls’ performances of 70’s classics get mostly lukewarm responses from the judges. And, from Randy and Paula, we learn that the Glory Note is all that matters.

The video packages feature more fun facts to know and tell - Girl Power edition.

Season 7 Top 10 Guys - Performance

Performance Videos! with very special thanks to rockers94…awesome ripping…

Tonight, the guys take on the 70’s with mixed results. A few of the contestants improved on their performance from last week, perhaps buying them another week (Chikezie, Luke Menard). Others disappointed (Michael Johns). Others brought it (David Cook, David Hernandez). There were also those who could have taken a giant dump on the stage and it would not have mattered (OK, only one–David Archuleta who apparently has already been crowned winner. Should I bother watching the rest of this shiz?)

The Top 10 Guys - Spoilers!

Like last week, this week’s performance shows will be taped ahead–the guys yesterday and the girls today. This week’s theme is the 70’s. And next week’s theme? You’ll never guess! Yeah, the 80’s.

Just for the record, I hate themes for the semis. It takes away the element of surprise. That first song choice can make or break a contestant, often in a really spectacular way. Narrowing their choices down to a specific genre (and a very small list of songs–50, I’m hearing) neither gives a contestant the opportunity to shine or bomb in way that makes for good TV, or a good introduction to that contestant.

There’s been lots of speculation about why TPTB decided to use themes during the semis. Here is my favorite. The deal with iTunes dictated that contestants pick songs that would be cheap and easy to clear…

But I digress. The guys performed last night, and there are some spoilers floating around the net. I’ll grab what the peeps have been posting in comments and post…
