Finale Recap

Jordin Sparks looked exactly as I pictured her in the moment of her Idol victory.  Her win was certainly no surprise after Tuesday’s show, where Blake proved to be no match for Jordin’s prowess for power-emoting treacly lyrics.  Personally? I think it’s as it should be. Jordin is the perfect winner. Too bad the show ran so long we could not get some extended moments of Jordin revelling in her triumph with her fellow Idols.  The confetti machine appeared to be on the fritz, too.  Damn.

Biggest complaint about last night’s mostly entertaining finale?  More Idols, please.  Really, did we need to hear Gwen Stefani pimp lip sync sing her new single from an undisclosed location?  I would have rather had another medley from the kids.  Last year’s finale was so good, because it was filled with appearances from the performers who make Idol what it is–the KIDS.  In fact, Prince was the only guest last year to appear WITHOUT also performing with the Top 12.  This year, there were five solo performances from guest stars.

Having said that, I enjoyed performances from Tony Bennett and Green Day anyway.  The aforementioned Gwen, and Bette Midler–not so much.  Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight and Joe Perry of Aerosmith were not only entertaining, but they all played nicely with the kids.

“It’s the night we’ve all been waiting for.  Who will take the title?  The beatboxer from Seattle, or the sweetheart from Arizona. The world is watching…This is American Idol!  For the last time this year…sniff. Continue reading ‘Finale Recap’

Melinda Doolittle eliminated tonight.

THAT is some f*cked up sh*t, peeps.

*******************

Farewell Melinda

&*%$#^&**asdfjkl;

Damn.

It’s not that I didn’t realize it could happen.  While Melinda Doolittle is certainly an amazing singer and consistent week in and week out, I knew she could be the victim of an OMG!!11!!! shocking boot.  It happens every year, doesn’t it?  Ask Tamyra Gray, Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry, right?  I suppose the bettors knew best–they predicted Melinda would go this week.

I, on the other hand, truly felt the contest could be anybody’s game. Particularly after Tuesday night’s episode.  Melinda and Blake Lewis both outsang and outperformed Jordin Sparks. For the first time in a few weeks, she appeared vulnerable.  Of course, if Jordin were vulnerable, they all were. But still, I found myself thinking that a Melinda/Blake final was in the realm of possibility.

Ah well, that’s how the cookie crumbles in Idol land.  I’ve had lots of practice watching favorites get booted off.  I’m steely, at this point.  Stiff upper lip, y’all. I imagine I’ll get more practice next week when Blake Lewis is finally eliminated. Heh.

Before I start the re-cap, let me fast-forward to the end of last night’s show.  Both Entertainment Weekly and People Magazine have reporters on the scene here and here.  After the show wrapped, Blake and Jordin tossed a specially made coin with their faces imprinted on either side, to choose next week’s performance order.  Blake won the toss, and the chance to choose first or last.  Every contestant who has won this toss chose the pimp spot for obvious reasons.  Not Blake. First, he deferred to the producers, and then to Jordin.  Who of course…picked the pimp spot. She’s no fool. Continue reading ‘Final 3 Results’

Final 3 Performance

Eep.  It’s tough for me to wrap my mind around recaping the Final 3, because while the show was broadcast here on the East coast, I was actually in a club watching Elvis Costello and the Imposters put on a kick ass show.  I’m on a giddy Elvis high right now, but I’ll do my best to concentrate.  Here we go.

It’s the big Final 3, and as Ryan says, tonight there are  3 contestants, 3 songs, 3 phone lines and 3 judges.  Yay, Ryan can count.

What a difference a week makes.  Top 4 was simply dire, with the contestants appearing completely lost singing songs from the Bee Gee’s catalog.  This week, in a complete turnabout–the Final 3 put on a great show.  The kids are given the opportunity to sing songs that suit their individual performing style.  We really get to see them at their best.  This is a worthy Final 3.  However some are more worthy than others, and I will get to that in a minute. Highlights from Lakisha Jones’ exit interviews

If ousted contestant Lakisha Jones had made the Final 3, she would have had a huge celebration in Flint, MI this weekend.  Flint officials say that LaKisha will get her celebration anyway, probably right after the finale and before the Idols start rehearsals for the tour.

In  her exit interview with American Idol Extra, LaKisha said that she was encouraged to try out for AI by the manager at her new job at a bank in Baltimore.  He gave her gas and toll money to drive to New York.  After she made it, even though she had just started the job, her manager gave her a week off to participate in the Hollywood Round in California.  When she made the Top 40, she did not go back to her job.  The folks at the bank have supported her entire run on idol–they sat in the audience one night, voted for her and sent her text messages encouraging her.

Other highlights from her press interviews:

  • She felt like she was going home 3 weeks ago when she was in the bottom 3 with Sanjaya.
  • She had a really difficult time choosing songs for Bee Gees week.  She changed her mind a lot.  Even now she regrets her song choices.
  • She’s kept her daughter off TV since her audition to protect her.  Her daughter will probably go on tour with her.
  • She doesn’t understand Simon’s criticism that she was “yelling.”
  • A tuxedo shirt she was going to wear last week that got ruined at the dry cleaners did not make a tough week any easier.

LaKisha Jones:  Eliminated tonight

******************

No Top 4 surprise boot this year, kids. LaKisha Jones, who has been teetering on the edge for awhile now, is sent home.  She’s a talented singer, but without any training or musical exposure she had a tough time navigating the theme nights.  Any song outside of the big-voiced R&B box tripped her up.  And her penchant for picking songs by beloved Idol winners didn’t help her much either.

With the right producer picking songs for her, Lakisha could do really well in the R&B or gospel market.  She has a powerhouse voice, she just needs a little polishing and some good people guiding her career.

There is SO much time to waste in tonight’s hour-long show, with the cast cut down to only 4 contestants.  Ryan lingers at the judges table, drawing out the conversation.  I imagine the stage manager constantly motioning Ryan to “stretch…it…out.”  We get last night’s re-cap, the lame Farmers Market interviews with “fans,” a really inane product placement bit promoting the movie “Fantastic Four” (that includes an opportunity for Simon to leer at Jessica Alba, who’s in the audience) and an announcement about a new show from the producers of Idol. (Oh. So this is why they aren’t producing the Emmys. Much more important that Ken and Nigel attempt to save Fox’s craptastic fall ratings than save the Emmys.  Maybe next year.) Barry Gibb is this week’s guest mentor.  He and his brothers, The Bee Gees, came out of the British Invasion of the mid-sixties and have been through a few metamorphoses over the years.  During the 70’s , they became a dance band, helping to mainstream disco. And, as a staunch member of the “Disco Sux” contingency back in the day, I’m not a big fan of the music from that period.  My favs all come from their early work, in the 60s, of which I was hoping to get a good dose of tonight.  Alas, it was only Jordin who brought the Beatlesque Bee Gees, singing the beautiful “To Love Somebody.”

But, if I’m being perfectly honest, I’m not huge fan overall of the Brothers Gibb sound–I find their nasal, high-pitched warbly falsettos unpleasant listening. Having said that, I gotta give those guys props for their longevity.  They stayed current for a good 30 years.

Barry is a very encouraging and circumspect mentor. Even when Blake picks a lemon, “Well, we didn’t have a hit with it, but maybe Blake could make it current…..” he keeps looking on the bright side.  Also, as a side note.  Barry is one more aged celebrity who desperately needs to just say no to the Botox.  At this point, he can barely move his jaw.

After watching the show tonight, twice in fact, I have to say–Worst. Episode. Ever.  Melinda was the best overall, but she was bland.  Jordin had the best performance, “To Love Somebody”, but her second tune, “A Woman In Love” was an earsplitting mess.  Blake wasn’t terrible, but he misstepped in a big way.  And LaKisha, who I think should go home, was pitchy, winded and boring on both numbers. Sanjaya Malakar finally gets his homecoming party.  He’ll appear in the courtyard at The Commons (1928 S. Commons, Federal Way) at 4 p.m. Wednesday for a “Welcome Home” reception/autograph session.  For a dollar donation you can get Sanjaya’s autograph to benefit local relief agency World Vision.

At noon Saturday, he’s scheduled to appear at the Mural Amphitheater at Seattle Center (305 Harrison St.).  The event is free.  Sanjaya may, or may not sing. According to the press release, Sanjaya will be heading into the studio soon to work on his debut album. Hm.

According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Idol musical arranger, Michael Orland, Jon Bon Jovi was not crazy about Blake Lewis’s arrangement of “You Give Love a Bad name.  Michael says, ” I was in the room watching Bon Jovi with him and Bon Jovi was not digging it at all. But I thought it was so incredible and respectful of Bon Jovi’s version.

Highlights from Chris Richardson’s Exit Interviews

Chris Richardson left the competition on Wednesday with Phil Stacey.  I guess you could say they share 6th place.  Here are excerpts from his exit interviews.

  • He was really surprised that the judges liked his Mraz cover, “Geek in Pink.”
  • Randy was the most supportive judge.  He appreciated his singing style.
  • When he was asked to stand with Blake, he knew he was going home.  Plus, he saw the band setting up with instruments none of the other contestant’s used in their performances.
  • He just got out of a long relationship.  He is not dating anyone right now–rumors about his dating Lauren Conrad from “The Hills” are not true.

*****************

“I’m not that shocked tonight, and I don’t think our viewers will be shocked tonight.” Nigel Lythgoe tells Chuck Ross of TV Week Wednesday afternoon before the results show.

Well, I was a little shocked. Phil Stacey, left the competition this week after 3 very strong performances in a row.  And despite TPTB’s attempts to throw him under the bus–hell because of their attempts, ’cause by now I figure America really isn’t listening to them anymore–he’d sail through to the next round.  LaKisha Jones, on the other hand, made a comeback only this week after several lackluster performances in a row, and a drubbing by the judges last week.

After factoring in demographic vote splitting (assuming that she’s sharing the same fan base as Melinda)  I was sure LaKisha was a goner.

Well, the little Q&A with Ryan before her performance, where she finally showed she had some humor and sass, and that kiss from Simon after her fabulous performance probably did not hurt.  I think this week’s LaKisha pimping may have sealed Phil’s fate, but I think it bought her only one more week.  I expect a Melinda-Blake-Jordin finale.

Good thing I’m not betting on any of these awesome predictions of mine.  Heh.

Chris Richardson, on the other hand, seemed destined for the boot this week.  And, he was not the least bit surprised when Ryan told him he was going home. Continue reading ‘Top 6* Results’

TV Week Interview with Nigel Lythgoe - Tonight, not a shocker, says Nigel

Chuck Ross, editorial director at TV Week interviews producer Nigel Lythgoe.

Nigel is predicting….that tonight’s double boot will not be a shocker.  He says, “I’m not that shocked tonight, and I don’t think our viewers will be shocked tonight.”

Chuck congratulates Nigel for raising Nearly 70 million dollars through Idol Gives Back.

Nigel claims that the vote totals this week were very close to the vote totals last week. He believes that holding the phone lines open for 4 hours helped, and that “people have now decided who…their favorites are.”

Nigel says the IGB videos are #1, 2, 3 and 4 on the iTunes video downloads chart.  The money generated from the iTunes’ downloads have not been added to the total yet.

Nigel mentions that Robin Thicke will be performing tonight (he doesn’t mention it, but this performance is pre-recorded).  Read Nigel’s comments on the contestants performances after the jump. Continue reading ‘TV Week Interview with Nigel Lythgoe - Tonight, not a shocker, says Nigel’

Jon Bon JoviCan I just whine for a bit?  I know the charity special last week raised a lot of money for people who need it.  And that perhaps it would have been some bad karma to kick an Idol to the curb at the end of last week’s Kumbaya-fest.  But DAMN.  I missed my boot.  My week is not complete until I witness someone’s dream being crushed.  And no flipping Top 5? At all?  BLEAH.  Ya  know, if it were Top 5, the remaining contestants would be singing two songs each this week. I’m just sayin’

Jon Bon Jovi is this week’s Idol mentor, with a little help from Bon Jovi keyboardist, David Bryan. I’ll say up front–not a big Bon Jovi fan.  Back in the day, my tastes ran more to The Replacements, Husker Du, Elvis Costello, The Smiths–I turned my nose up at hair bands. I was too cool. And look at me now.  Running an American Idol blog. Just the epitome of coolness. *cough*

So, we’ve established that I’m not a big fan of the musical stylings of Bon Jovi.  In fact, the clips of the band back in the day, with the hair and the choreography and the cheesy pyrotechnics had me rolling my eyes.  But that Jon Bon Jovi? Easy on the eyes. Why, yes he is. He’s holding up just fine, too.  He’s way better looking without all the hair. He’s also a very enthusiastic and helpful mentor, and a very cool down-to-earth guy.

What’s more, this week’s performances were some of the best of the season.  Continue reading ‘Top 6* Performance’

Top 6 Results - Recap

Sorry the recap is so late peeps. I felt like I needed to watch the special over again, and I just could not bring myself to do that right away.  It’s just as well, there’s a lot of information I’d like to include in the recap that wasn’t available last night.

ETA:  Here’s an interesting post from Reality Blurred.  Reuters tried to find out what portion of the monies raised came from corporate sponsors like AT&T, Ford and Coca-Cola, but the reporters were met with tight lips.  Also, TMZ reported that Pink and Gwen Stefani’s videos were cut due to time constraints and will be shown later. Daniel Radcliffe’s people are still trying to find out what happened. (thanks dvls)

As of Thursday night, Idol Gives Back has raised $60 million.  You can still donate at americanidol.com and at the IGB My Space page. Also, according to the AP article Bono’s organization, One has signed up 70,000 new members.

There’s some interesting stuff from the in-studio reporters from the LA Times Show Tracker and Entertainment Weekly’s Popwatch.  Rupert Murdoch and his family were in the audience.  Melinda Doolittle and Chris Richardson seemed to have a special bond. And, the audience murmured disapprovingly during the Celine/Elvis number.

I’m not sure how the in-studio audience were reacting, but in comments here on the blog, people were speculating about how Idol would manage to mix up what’s supposed to be a feel-good night of charitable giving with the tense and sometimes unhappy task of kicking a contestant to the curb. Idol Gives Back Charity Special

What to look forward to tonight:

Update: Ryan just announced that tonight’s elimination will be THE MOST SHOCKING IN IDOL HISTORY….Plus, they got over 70 million votes last night.

  • Kelly Clarkson singing with Jeff Beck on Guitar
  • Annie Lenox singing “Bridge Over Troubled Water
  • A taped message from Madonna
  • Celine Dion and Elvis Presley (well, that’s the rumor anyway)
  • Bono surprises the kids as they rehearse his song “American Prayer”

Nigel said on Ryan Seacrest’s radio program this morning that they had more than 65 million votes by 10 pm PDT last night.  They broke the previous record of 65.5 million votes that came in for the Season 3 finale…

Update: Tonight’s big shocking boot?  There was no boot.  Nobody was eliminated tonight.  As Ryan said, “Who could eliminate someone at the end of a charity special?”

It was hardly shocking however…

All of the votes from this week will carry over to next, and TWO people will be eliminated next Wednesday.

Also, the show ran about 5 minutes over the 2 hour mark for those who are tivoing.

Cold opening - Ryan is standing in the control room looking very serious. “Tonight,” he says, “We are presenting a very special show.  We’ve got the same 3 judges, the same 6 finalists (Each face is displayed on a monitor, the camera pans them).  But one huge difference–the calls that you make will not only save your favorite contestant, (Ryan pauses dramatically and turns around) they will also save lives.  THIS is Idol Gives Back.

Holy cow.  In comments, when things get tense, I say stuff like ya know we ain’t solving world hunger here, peeps, it’s only a tee vee show, so be cool! So much for that excuse. At least for tonight.

I suppose I could get all cynical at this point.  Sure, there’s plenty to be cynical about. TPTB may only be doing this to burnish their reputations–particularly since the most successful elements of the show rest on humiliating and mocking people. Or, perhaps the sponsors are merely playing the typical PR game rather than truly helping the poor. Of course, this Idol Gives Back deal could be merely a way to boost ratings and maybe even finally win that coveted Emmy (would not be surprised if they finally do). Could TPTB be exploiting the poor children of the world in order to serve their own interests? ETA:  Kirsten just posted this blog from Access Hollywood in comments.  It contains a very detailed account of tonight’s show.  A couple of interesting tidbits not mentioned anywhere yet:

  • News Corp which owns the Fox Network will donate 10 cents per call up to 50 million votes tonight for a total of $5 million.
  • Carrie Underwood will perform “I’ll Stand By You”  from Africa on tomorrow night’s special. A group of celebrities will sing “Stayin Alive” including Teri Hatcher, Gwyneth Paltrow and Hugh Grant.

Tonight’s performance show was taped yesterday, and there are accounts from Fans of Reality TV from the dress rehearsal and Idol Forums (check out the spoiler section, but you need to sign up first)  from the show taping.

Spoilers mention that Ryan said that Bono mentored the kids this week, but there were no clips during the show.  We’ll probably see that stuff during the special on Wednesday.  The show does feature clips from Africa and America interspersed with the kid’s performances.

Highlights from Sanjaya Malakar’s Exit Interviews

Just for you…a round up of interviews with eliminated contestant Sanjaya Malakar.  He was on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno Thursday night, where he did a skit with Donny Osmond and even got some couch time with Jay.  You can watch his interview at Rickey’s.  Saturday night, Sanjaya appears at the White House Correspondence Dinner as a guest of People magazine.

Here’s an interesting factoid from Rodney Ho at Access Atlanta from Thursday’s satellite interview–”Something to Talk About” was not Sanjaya’s first song choice.  He wanted to do Janis Joplin’s “Mercedes Benz,” but according to Sanjaya, the producers said no–due to Ford Motor Company’s sponsorship of American Idol. Interesting.

Some other quick notables:

  • He respects Simon a lot, and feels his criticism comes from disappointment that Sanjaya didn’t live up to his potential.
  • Sanjaya’s mom had taken the week off–only a cousin was there in the audience for his elimination.
  • He read both positive and negative reviews of his performances in order to stay grounded
  • He had a very strong feeling that he was going home Wednesday night.
  • He cried Wednesday night because he was sad to be leaving the other contestants, rather than sad over his elimination.
  • Sanjaya would like to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston.  He and John Stevens, who is a student there now, can commiserate. Heh.

Excerpts from Sanjaya’s interviews with American Idol Extra, Entertainment Weekly, MTV and People magazine can be found after the jump. Continue reading ‘Highlights from Sanjaya Malakar’s Exit Interviews’

Idols on Oprah

Simon Cowell and the Top 6 were Oprah Winfrey’s guests today on her show.  Simon answered Oprah’s questions via satellite from Las Vegas.  His top 2 Idols are Melinda Doolittle and Jordin Sparks, but he’s not counting out LaKisha Jones, if she turns in more performances like her show-stopping “And I Am Telling You” from the semi’s.  He likes Chris Richardson, because he is contemporary, and he thinks Blake Lewis is a pop star.

About the newly-eliminated Sanjaya Malakar, Simon says, “I miss him, probably in the same way as I would miss now my favorite horror movie…I don’t mean that nastily, because I like horror movies. But there’s a kind of like, ‘I hate it, I love it.’ And that’s how I felt about Sanjaya…He was a very sweet guy, quite entertaining, but a horrible singer.”

During the second segment, Oprah interviewed the Top 6 via satellite from the Idol studios in LA.  You can watch the interview for yourself right here:

TV Week Interview: The Top 7

Chuck Ross of TV Week interviews producer Nigel Lythgoe about this week’s Top 7 performance show.

Nigel explains tonight’s results show gimmick, “I’m going to split the group into the highest voting group and the lowest voting group, and then I’m going to take one of them and say, ‘congratulations, you’re safe, go and join the group that is safe’ and have them make the decision.” (me: they’ve done a variation of this every year since Season 3 during Top 7 week)

When Chuck asked if there was a surprise tonight, Nigel said, “I don’t deal in surprises Chuck, I deal in reality.”

Nigel Lythgoe attempts to clear up the controversy that’s been brewing all day around Simon Cowell’s ”eye roll” after Chris Richardson’s post-performance condolences (not until after he had some words with Simon) to his fellow Virginians regarding the VA Tech tragedy.  Nigel becomes pretty angry, to the point where he begins to ramble midway through.  Here is his entire screed verbatim: Continue reading ‘TV Week Interview: The Top 7′
