Actually, it’s a moot question at this point. We already know half the songs the Idols are singing–there is only a little room for speculation.
Here’s how it works: The Final 3 sing 3 songs apiece. Each Idol is assigned a judge who picks a song. The Idol picks a song and The producers pick a song. The Idols have no control over two-thirds of the song choices. It’s a process that allows TPTB to control the outcome. Want to throw an Idol under the bus? Make them sing the dour “Vincent” (Clay Aiken, S2) and then change the arrangement at the last minute! It’s a veritable minefield for the remaining Idols.
Here is what we have so far:
David Cook
- Simon Cowell chose: “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” by Roberta Flack
- David chose: “The World I Know” by Collective Soul
- The producers chose: undetermined
Syesha Mercado
- Randy Jackson chose: “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys
- Syesha Chose: undetermined
- The producers chose: undetermined
David Archuleta
- Paula Abdul chose: “And So It Goes” by Billy Joel
- David chose: undetermined
- The producers chose: “Longer” by Dan Fogelberg (this is a brand-new spoiler)
I’m not going to attempt to pick songs for the Idols this week, but I do have a few thoughts.
The last two weeks of Idol performances have–in a word–sucked. Nobody seems to be enjoying their time on the Idol stage these days. Fun times spent flying to Las Vegas last weekend to see the Cirque du Soleil meant less time practicing and resting. It showed in the Idols’ performances last week. While all 4 appeared burnt out, the surviving 3 seemed as serious as a flipping heart attack. The playful camaraderie between the constants has slowly evaporated as each Idol has been eliminated. It’s hard to imagine the kids left–at this point–pulling off an exuberant group number. The energy and chemistry required are MIA. Hopefully, the hometown visits recharged the kids’ batteries, and there will be some new attitudes emerging on the Idol stage come Tuesday. As far as the producers are concerned: Sleep. It’s a good thing. Fit it into the kids’ schedules, will ya?
ETA: I’m also wondering how Papagate is going to affect the proceedings this week. Daddy Archuleta, who appeared to be micro-managing David’s performances and song choices won’t be with David backstage as he rehearses with the band and the vocal coaches. Will little Archie wither under the strain? How will the controversy affect the voters? I’m thinking he’s going to get a ton of pity votes if he tanks on Tuesday. America may think it cruel and unjust to separate a minor from his own father at such a crucial time of the competition. I mean, poor David is only 17! It looks like a win-win situation from here, at least as far as the competition is concerned. From a personal standpoint–not so much. Poor little David, for reals…
So, peeps, what do you think? What should the Idols sing? What should the Idols do? Are you looking forward to the Final 3? Discuss!

ETA: I’m having the BIGGEST day traffic wise I’ve ever had on the site. I know it wasn’t perfect tonight, but I’m working with the hosting guys. Tomorrow things should go better. Now that ya all got your spoilers, I don’t anticipate any more problems tonight.
Thanks so much for visiting my site!
Performance Order! From Carie–Thank you!
- David Cook - “Hungry Like the Wolf” by Duran Duran -
- Syesha Mercado - “Proud Mary” by Ike and Tina Turner - Sexy
- Jason Castro - “I Shot the Sheriff” by Bob Marley - Marley style, very funky
- David Archuleta- “Stand by Me” - Solid performance
- David Cook - “Baba O’Riley” - Incredible. Started off slow. Brought the house down.
- Syesha Mercado - “Change is Gonna Come” - Screachy, but ended pretty. She looked gorgeous.
- Jason Castro - “Mr. Tambourine Man” - It was just OK. Audience didn’t connect with it.
- David Archuleta - “Love Me Tender” by Elvis Presley - Solid performance.
“Joan” just posted her first clue for Jason Castro over at Popwatch:
Jason’s a man on a mission. With one arm that fires, authorities fall, but their counterparts are spared. With the other arm, he jingles his tympan all the way to victory.
*The above is the “real” Joan’s riddle, and below is not an “educated guess”. These are really Jason’s song choices. They’ve been backed up by several sources, including a friend of Jason’s who has posted on the blog.
- Jason Castro - “I Shot the Sherrif” by Bob Marley/Eric Clapton and “Mr. Tambourine Man” By Bob Dylan/Byrds.
- David Archuleta - “Stand By Me” By Ben E. King and “Love Me Tender” (Norah Jones version) - this has turned into a pretty pervasive rumor with supposed reliable source, but I can’t vouch for it.
- Syesha Mercado - “Proud Mary” by Ike and Tina Turner, “A Change is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke
- David Cook - “Hungry Like the Wolf” by Duran Duran and “Baba O’Reilly” by the Who.
TMZ spoilers are in. Still waiting to hear from Carie.

A reliable spoiler at Idol Forums spilled the beans.
At last, a theme broad enough that allows the contestants a little breathing room to choose a song that really reflects who they are as artists. Even though it’s a rock theme, there really is room to stretch the boundaries beyond rock n’ roll.
The songs will supposedly come from this list of songs from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Just about every genre of music can be thrown into the R n’ R pot. This could be a very good week for the remaining Top 4. Just about anything would be better than this week’s speed-wreck.
Also, Natasha Bedingfield will be the musical guest for tonight’s results show. Have they given up on featuring past Idols? Maybe the producers are hoping that a known star will boost their sagging ratings…

The Idols will be singing two songs from the Neil Diamond catalog tonight.
ETA: Just heard from Caffiend. Neil Diamond video precedes the contestant’s first performance. The judges judge both songs after the second performance.
Here is the Song Order:
- Jason Castro - “Forever in Blue Jeans” - When one of the fake judges told him he looked comfortable up there, Jason answered “I don’t know about that…”
- David Cook - “I’m Alive” - Both of David’s songs “totally rocked.”
- Brooke White - “I Am … I Said” at the piano - She is going to address forgetting her words tonight.
- David Archuleta - “Sweet Caroline” - Both of his songs were “fabulous”
- Syesha Mercado - “Hello Again” - She “looks like a star.”
- Jason Castro - “September Morn”
- David Cook - “All I Ever Really Need is You”
- Brooke White - “I’m a Believer”
- David Archuleta - “America”
- Syesha Mercado - “Thank the Lord for the Night Time”
Wardrobe:
What they were wearing: Syesha wore a sexy purple evening dress; Cookie wore a black jacket with jeans and a dark shirt underneath; looked very hot; Jason wore a light shirt with a satiny vest over; Archie wore denim with a striped shirt and denim jacket; Brooke wore a blue ruffly top with a belt and silver pants No wardrobe change, at least at rehearsal.
Spoilers:
Thanks for bringing the songs over Milajoy! The Jason Castro spoiler is from Joan at EW. Fan Blast had half the spoiler “America” right. Shmorla from Idol Forums spoiled Brooke White’s “I Am I Said” and there was a guessing game at Idol Forums introduced by Cinemaniac86. #1 was correct if you were playing along (I was and I was wrong). The rest were filled in by TMZ.
ETA: Caffiend made it into rehearsal, so stay tuned…

PERFORMANCE ORDER
I just heard from Caffiend!
- Syesha Mercado - “One Rock & Roll Too Many” from Starlight - She looked beautiful. Red dress, sat on the piano. She danced with Ricky Minor. There is a huge orchestra on stage.
- Jason Castro - “Memory” from Cats - He is very obviously sick, and seems in a bad mood. He’s wearing a white suit. The consensus is that he wasn’t very good.
- Brooke White - “You Must Love Me” from the film adaption of Evita - She is fantastic. “Blew me Away”. Really got what the song meant. Her dress is really ugly.
- David Archuleta - “Think of Me” from Phantom of the Opera - Very good, as he always is. Dressed in a Khaki Jacket and sneakers.
- Carly Smithson - “Jesus Christ Superstar” - “Tore the Place Apart”. Very high energy. She was wearing a sixties-style dress.
- David Cook - “Music of the Night” from Phantom of the Opera - David has the pimp spot. He sounded “Wonderful” He’s wearing a suit jacket with a scarf flowing out of the back.

The Top 10 Guys - Spoilers!

Like last week, this week’s performance shows will be taped ahead–the guys yesterday and the girls today. This week’s theme is the 70’s. And next week’s theme? You’ll never guess! Yeah, the 80’s.
Just for the record, I hate themes for the semis. It takes away the element of surprise. That first song choice can make or break a contestant, often in a really spectacular way. Narrowing their choices down to a specific genre (and a very small list of songs–50, I’m hearing) neither gives a contestant the opportunity to shine or bomb in way that makes for good TV, or a good introduction to that contestant.
There’s been lots of speculation about why TPTB decided to use themes during the semis. Here is my favorite. The deal with iTunes dictated that contestants pick songs that would be cheap and easy to clear…
But I digress. The guys performed last night, and there are some spoilers floating around the net. I’ll grab what the peeps have been posting in comments and post…

MTV.com contacted Idol Executive Producer Ken Warwick for a statement on the seemingly ”professional” backgrounds of some of Season 7’s rumored Top 50:
It’s all part of what makes the early-season “Idol” episodes so mesmerizing: a heady mix of the bizarre, the talented and, of course, the talent-less, all hoping to get famous (or at least get their 15 minutes). The ultimate goal is the discovery of the “diamonds in the rough,” the sublimely skilled singers who have somehow fallen through the cracks. Of course, if you believe the rumors that have been swirling around “Idol” fan sites in recent days, those diamonds are becoming more difficult to find — which is why the show producers have seeded this year’s field of contestants with a handful of ringers: male and female singers who have been signed to major labels, worked with established songwriters and musicians, released albums and even been nominated for Grammy Awards.
The whole thing has created such a stir — and brought into question the very validity of a show created to find undiscovered talent — that MTV News went to “Idol” executive producer Ken Warwick for comment. And while he didn’t deny that some of the season-seven contestants had previous experience, he explained that the process of finding new, never-before-discovered talent has grown increasingly difficult, given the show’s popularity.
Here’s what Ken has to say:
