Finale Recap

Jordin Sparks looked exactly as I pictured her in the moment of her Idol victory.  Her win was certainly no surprise after Tuesday’s show, where Blake proved to be no match for Jordin’s prowess for power-emoting treacly lyrics.  Personally? I think it’s as it should be. Jordin is the perfect winner. Too bad the show ran so long we could not get some extended moments of Jordin revelling in her triumph with her fellow Idols.  The confetti machine appeared to be on the fritz, too.  Damn.

Biggest complaint about last night’s mostly entertaining finale?  More Idols, please.  Really, did we need to hear Gwen Stefani pimp lip sync sing her new single from an undisclosed location?  I would have rather had another medley from the kids.  Last year’s finale was so good, because it was filled with appearances from the performers who make Idol what it is–the KIDS.  In fact, Prince was the only guest last year to appear WITHOUT also performing with the Top 12.  This year, there were five solo performances from guest stars.

Having said that, I enjoyed performances from Tony Bennett and Green Day anyway.  The aforementioned Gwen, and Bette Midler–not so much.  Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight and Joe Perry of Aerosmith were not only entertaining, but they all played nicely with the kids.

“It’s the night we’ve all been waiting for.  Who will take the title?  The beatboxer from Seattle, or the sweetheart from Arizona. The world is watching…This is American Idol!  For the last time this year…sniff. Continue reading ‘Finale Recap’

Eliminated tonight:

Stephanie Edwards

Next Week:  Gwen Stefani is the guest mentor.  She and Akon will perform her hit “Sweet Escape” on Wednesday.  The Top 10 theme will be “Pop” (just confirmed-the contestants picks are not restricted to just the 90’s)

*************

Tonight’s elimination is particularly significant–the kids who survive tonight’s cut are guaranteed a spot on the Idols summer tour.  That means, more exposure and more importantly–a BOATLOAD OF CASH.  I’m thinkin’ the kids are extra specially nervous tonight as they await their fates.  Continue reading ‘Top 11 Results’

It started with 4 young men from Liverpool…

Ok, here’s the deal.  My love for pop music begins and ends with the Beatles. That’s pretty much it.  Y’all can’t imagine how excited I was when I heard that the British Invasion would be an American Idol theme night.  First, there is the potential to hear some really cool songs not previously sung (over and over again) on Idol.  Of course, there is also the potential for it all to be a giant trainwreck as well.  Nevertheless, me=totally psyched.

The show starts with a montage of some of the greatest bands of all time–The Beatles, The Stones, The Who and the Kinks. Don’t forget the incredible female singers–Dusty Springfield and Shirley Bassey. And then, naturally, clips of this week’s mentors, the ever-youthful, Peter Noone and spitfire, Lulu–who both give the kids useful advice and solid direction

Tonight’s performances and song choices are a vast improvement over last week.  Of course the pool of songs itself is deeper and better. And, dare I say it–Melinda and LaKisha are not the stars of the show tonight.

Easily, this was the best performance show of the season so far.

Peter Noone. like a proud papa, is in the audience tonight. Continue reading ‘Top 11 Performance’

Ryan introduces the judges, and after a little chat, last night’s clips .

Next up, the BEST GROUP SING EVAH.  Ryan says, “Before we start losing people, let’s hear them all together with a tribute to Diana Ross!”

OMG. This is what I’m talking about, baby. The kids do a medley of Supremes hits, Including “Stop! In the Name of Love” complete with the Patented Supremes Stop!11! Hand Gesture thingy–it makes the perfect Pointy, Pointy, Pointy Pose ending.

This group sing has everything.  Medley? Check. Bad choreography? Check. Contestants who look like they’d rather be anywhere else than singing lame Diana Ross songs? Check. The highlight: Extry “special” choreography–each girl sings to a boy while the boys mock-act a miffed reaction. That’s TeeVee gold, right there, babee.  Anyone who thinks this season is boring, well I cannot help you. I love American Idol. I love it So Damn Much. Continue reading ‘Top 12 Results’

Hang on to your hat’s kids….

It’s DIANA ROSS week on American Idol.  Yes, the contestants get to choose from the fine oeuvre of MISS Diana Ross.

Will the kids pull it out, particularly the guys, or will we be treated to a massive trainwreck?  Stay tuned…

Recap to follow…

*******************

The show tonight starts off with more “Yeah, we’re awesome, we’re Idol, we’ve won stuff” footage. TPTB at American Idol will continue to toot their own horn.  By the time the big mid-season charity event rolls around, I predict the self-congratulation will become unbearable.

Tonight is the first performance night of the finals and the first week on the big stage.  Not to mention, the boys and girls are competing together for the first time. MISS Diana Ross is the guest “mentor” and she’s like a cogent Paula Abdul.  She actually has some useful suggestions for the singers, beyond being very positive and encouraging.  She’s still got the giant crazy hair-do, but she looks good without looking tucked and pulled.

Often, with a guest host, the theme isn’t centered around their music specifically. I think tonight would have served the entire cast better if the theme had been broader-say a “soul” or “Motown” night. But instead, we’ve got the songs of Miss Diana Ross.  For the R&B singers in the bunch, the theme is a snap.  For the others, it’s a challenge.  Some try to meet that challenge by modernizing the songs, or bringing their own sensibility to the music.  I find it ironic, that while the judges are constantly harping on originality and “making a song your own” they totally blast some of the contestants for attempting to change things up a bit.  Personally, as an Idol watcher who has lived through a Motown week year after year, I welcome the variety.  I don’t get it.  Make it your own, but don’t change it.  Be original, but don’t alter the originals.  Get your stories straight judges!  Anyway, I felt more than a little frustrated by the end of last night’s telecast.
