Taylor Hicks Performs on the Regis and Kelly Wedding of the Century

A couple with a sad story was thrown a big wedding by Live with Regis and Kelly on Friday. Taylor Hicks performed “The Right Place” during the wedding procession. Apparently, Taylor is the couple’s favorite American Idol. Ignore the wedding stuff and just listen to the music. Taylor did a beautiful job.

Idol Odds and Ends

The lengthy (and really informative–worth the read) USA Today article that leads today’s headlines thread featured a short list of tweaks to look out for in Season 7’s competition:

  • Letting singers play musical instruments during their performances in the first combined gathering of audition survivors, known as the Hollywood Round.
  • Visiting finalists’ hometowns and interviewing family and friends earlier in the process to help viewers get to know them faster.
  • Building a new set and creating a new opening credits sequence. Idol’s theme song will remain the same.
  • Adding an hour to the Hollywood Round and a possible “where are they now?” segment to highlight earlier Idol performers on top-12 results shows.

And from today’s Daily News Rush and Molloy column. BMG execs offer more insight to why Taylor Hicks, Katharine McPhee and Ruben Studdard were dropped from their labels:

Taylor Hicks Speaks…

UPDATE:  Apparently J Records is leaving open the possibility that they’ll work with Taylor Hicks in the future.  From the EW Hollywood Insider post on Katharine McPhee:

“…a rep for the RCA Music Group (which includes Arista, RCA, and J Records) tells Insider, “After six seasons, we are proud of the eight artists on the roster who started their careers on the show. With respect to Taylor, we have an understanding that he will come back to us to play music once he’s finished writing his new material.”

From Taylor Hicks’s MySpace:

A statement from Taylor: To all my fans and The Soul Patrol, I want to take a moment to talk about the recent news that my label and I have mutually parted ways. The important thing for all of you to remember is that I’ve been a working musician my whole life. This is turning the page on a new chapter of my career. Artistic freedom and control is an exciting prospect. The things that are most important to me is creating my art, performing it, and my fans. With the momentum that all of you have created over the years, Taylor Hicks is not going to stop anytime soon. I’ve started working on the new album, writing and scheduling exciting collaborations. The DVD, Whomp at the Warfield, is in it’s final stages, and will be released soon. So as one door closes, a new one opens for 2008 with more excitement for all my fans than ever before. Sit tight, because the best is yet to come!

I hope he finds a decent label or distribution deal soon. It can be an uphill battle to go independent…

Taylor Hicks (and Ruben Studdard) No Longer With J Records - It Appears To Be Official

On Friday, Shirley Halperin of EW.com dropped this gossip bomb–not only had Ruben Studdard been dropped by J Records, but Taylor Hicks had been as well.

That bit of news percolated around the internet for a few days while the usual suspects did their research, and now many publications, including Billboard.com, FOX news, Rollingstone, and the Associated Press (many news outlets are picking up the AP story) covering the story.

From EOnline News

J Records has confirmed the departures of former Idol champs Taylor Hicks and Ruben Studdard from the label that signed them after their respective wins on the hit Fox show.

“Taylor is going to record on his own for the next album,” J Records’ Liz Morentin wrote in an email Monday. “Ruben Studdard is still signed to 19 Entertainment [the production/management company behind Idol], and is currently working on his new album, however it will not be distributed by J Records.”

And from Mary Colurso of the Birmingham News:

Purplesmile’s Recap - Taylor Hicks, Live in Manila

Purplesmile, a regular longtime poster here at the blog, calls Manila, The Philippines home. Lucky for us, she has a first hand account of two of Taylor Hicks’ 3 recent mall gigs in the city. She also took some video and photos.

TAYLOR HICKS LIVE IN MANILA

This time last year, getting to see my favorite Idols live was purely wishful thinking on my part. Who would have thought that poor little me from this distant country would get to see two of my favorite Idols right here on home territory? And for free, at that! Not I, certainly. But it did happen! Many, many thanks to the Ayala Malls (I should shop there more ;D), who, this year, first brought my favorite Idol, Elliott Yamin, here in September, and, just more than a week ago, the first American Idol winner to visit us, Taylor Hicks, who I also am a fan of. So I went to Taylor’s first two Manila shows (the venues of which are both very conveniently located only a couple of blocks away from my office) and enjoyed them immensely.

This Week’s Idol Appearances

ETA: By popular demand (chat peeps!) watch Britney Spears sleep-walk through her VMA performance…

I thought I’d devote a post to upcoming Idol appearances that I lovingly gather in one place right here.  If I’ve missed something, shoot me an email at mjsbigblog@gmail.com

  • The MTV Video Music Awards are on TONIGHT, and I don’t know about you, but I’m tuning in for the Brit-brit crash-and-burn that promises to open the show.  Heh.  Idols will be there, supporting the Britney side show. Jennifer Hudson presents an award, while both Daughtry and Carrie Underwood are nominated for awards.  Tune in tonight at 9 pm EDT on MTV.
  • Monday, Kimberley Locke performs at the 16th Annual Ella Awards honoring Gladys Knight in Beverly Hills.
  • Chris Daughtry and his band Daughtry have some TV appearances this week: On Wednesday they appear on the CBS Early Show and then later that night on the Late Show with David Letterman. On Thursday, they appear on Live with Regis and Kelly.  Get your DVRs ready!
  • Opening Thursday: Jon Peter Lewis plays Jesus in the Redlands Civic Light Opera production of the musical “Godspell”.  (The production answers the hypothetical question: What if Jesus were a Hobbit? Heh.)
  • Friday,  Diana DeGarmo appears at the Otis Redding Tribute in Macon, GA 8 pm.
  • Saturday, Kimberley Locke appears at the Savannah Pride celebration in Savannah, GA.  George Huff appears at the Brilliant Embers Fall 2007 Concert in Anaheim, CA. 5:30 pm.  (that’s quite the juxtaposition…) Elliott Yamin appears in London, UK on behalf of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Kelly Clarkson appears on a repeat of the CMT special CMT Crossroads: Kelly Clarkson and Reba McEntire. 3 pm and 11 pm.  Finally, Taylor Hicks performs during halftime with the Auburn University Marching band at the Auburn-Miss football game at Auburn University. Taylor attended Auburn before he quit to pursue a music career full time.

Desdemona’s Taylor Hicks HOB Dallas TX Recap

OH. MY. GOSH.

Taylor, you were my first. I waited through six seasons of American Idol for someone like you - someone who could make me say, “WHOA! I LOVE this voice!” - someone who could make me just not WAIT to see them in their own concert… and you were the one and last Friday night was the night.

THE VENUE:

House of Blues, Dallas, Texas. What a terrific place for concerts; it’s new, it’s not too big, not too small, and the accoustics are outstanding. We (hubby and I invited another couple) arrived shortly before 7, and after a quick search of our purses, and the whole-body wand treatment that we all got, they trapped this lovely paper bracelet around our wrists and waved us through to stand in line or wait in the bar or restaurant. (care to guess which we chose?) Yep! Taylor wasn’t supposed to start until 8 and there was no opening act, so we had plenty of time to have a drink and eat a bite in the HOB Restaurant before finding our seats. Sarah’s Taylor Hicks Orlando FL Concert Recap

My Taylor Hicks at Hard Rock Live experience started a couple months ago, when tickets went on sale and SpenserJ and I discussed going to the show together. She subsequently bought the tickets for us, but as it turned out, Spense would not be able to go. So she sent the tickets (great front row seats!!) to me, and I tried to find someone else to go with me, but at the last minute, I was unsuccessful. So, I headed off to the Hard Rock by myself because I was not missing a chance to see Taylor live. Continue reading ‘Sarah’s Taylor Hicks Orlando FL Concert Recap’

Billboard Update - 09/01/07

Here’s this week’s and last week’s Idols Billboard Chart for you all.

Highlights:

  • Constantine Maroulis debuted on the Billboard Chart at #75 last week, and then dropped to #198 this week.  Unless his musical appearance on the big Bold and the Beautiful Boldface Challenge has some effect on sales this week.  So far, he’s sold 12,973 units so far.
  • Daughtry’s new single “Over You” debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 last week at #94.  It moves up to #75 this week, and is #39 on the Pop 100 and #25 on the Pop 100 Airplay.
  • This week, Kimberley Locke debuts a new song on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart.  “Band of Gold” enters the chart at #22.
  • Taylor Hicks’ “Heaven Knows” reaches its highest chart position on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart this week at #19.
  • Fantasia has a new single, “Only One U” and it debuted on the Hot Adult R&B Tracks and Airplay chat last week at #76 and #75 respectively.  It debuted on the Hot Adult R&B Airplay at #35.  This week it moves up the charts at #58, #58 and #30.
  • Carrie Underwood’s new single “So Small” from her upcoming album debuts on the Billboard Hot 100 this week at #98.  She moves from #17 to #15 on the Hot Country Songs chart.  She also debuts this week on the Canadian Hot 100 at #14.
  • “Forever Cool” the latest CD in the celebrity-duets-with-a-dead-guy genre–that would be Dean Martin–debuts at #39 on the Billboard 200 this week.  Paris Bennett “duets” with Dean on one cut, “Baby-O” and you can listen to it here.  She sounds fantastic, but I can’t get passed the whole singing-with-a-dead-guy thing…

I spent today updating my Idol Appearances page.  If you know of an Idol appearance and would like to add it, email me at mjsbigblog@gmail.com. Thanks.

Taylor Hicks in Concord, NH

Taylor in Portland, MEI picked up some last minute tix to see Taylor Hicks perform Friday night in a beautiful theater in Concord NH.  I had no idea Concord was such a small town–it reminded me of the fictional New Hampshire town Grace Metalious wrote about in her scandalous pulp novel, Peyton Place.  But, don’t ever say that to anyone who lives there–apparently that book is a sore subject for the live-free-or-die set.

The venue was intimate, and I was right up close.  Unfortunately, my camera was confiscated as I came through the door.  What’s up with that?  The venue reps insisted that the orders came from Taylor, which seemed strange to me, because he normally allows fans to take pictures.  I had three separate people tell me that, by the way. Odd.  This picture is courtesy of  J Frazier, who snapped it at a recent Portland, ME concert.  He wore the same T-shirt at both shows, so lets pretend it’s Concord, shall we?

Here it is–this week’s Billboard Update

  • It’s official. Bucky Covington takes the lead as 2007’s best-selling debut country artist. Yay Bucky…
  • She’s charting at #6 and #8 on the Hot Christian Adult Contemporary and Hot Christian Songs charts (Only the World). And charting at #3 on the Hot Singles Sales Chart.  That’s Mandisa, whose debut album “True Beauty” will be released on Tuesday.  Check out her my space to hear some samples and buy her singles…
  • “Now 25″, the latest Top 40 compilation album, debuts at #1 on the Billboard 200.  Carrie Underwood (Before He Cheats), Daughtry (Home),  Kelly Clarkson (Never Again) and Elliott Yamin (Wait For You) all have cuts on the album.  It’s an Idol Bonanza! Yee haw…
  • Bucky Covington and Kelly Pickler both move up the charts this week.  The other Idols either stayed about the same, or fell down the charts a bit. Not counting compilations, there are no Idol albums in the Billboard 200 Top 10 this week…
  • Chris Daughtry (Home) and Fantasia (When I See U) hold on to #1 positions on the Hot Adult Top 40 and Hot R&B Singles/Airplay charts, respectively.
  • Taylor Hicks (Heaven Knows) climbs from #23 to #22, its highest chart position so far.

EW Rates the Idols and other ramblings

Things have been very quiet in American Idol land.  The contestants are on tour, but as Ken Barnes from the USA Today Idol Chatter blog has noted, the buzz on this years contestants has been nearly non-existent.

Last year at this time, you blog peeps were chattering about Taylor Hicks, Katharine McPheeChris Daughtry and Kellie Pickler–all had announced record deals with Sony/BMG by this time last summer.

Between Katharine McPhee’s admission she was an active bulimic prior to her Idol audition, and her 3 week absence from the beginning of the tour due to throat problems–this blog at least–was never at a loss for subjects to discuss.

And of course, there was the Unofficial Taylor Hicks Travelling Shadow tour, featuring his old band Little Memphis Blues Orchestra and any of the other Idols who wanted to join in on the fun… It took place in clubs in key cities after the Pop Tarts cheese-fest wrapped up for the night.

This year, so far, no signings have been announced.  All the Idols have shown up for the tour, and outside of reports of Blake Lewis being mean to old ladies, (not this one though, heh) this year’s gang is gossip-free.

Not longing for the good old days exactly, but I would like SOMETHING to happen.  News about Jordin and Blake’s contracts with 19 would be nice for starters…

In the meantime, here are some interesting articles from Entertainment Weekly.  About former Idols, of course.

EW rates the Idols and muses on their post-Idol careers.  Also, I have a little news about Bo Bice. Good stuff.  After the jump…

Billboard Update 06/30/07

Here’s this week’s, Billboard Idol Update, now with cute little symbols indicating gold and platinum status!  Yay! A triangle equals platinum, the number after it signifies how many times over the record has gone platinum (1,000,000 shipped/sales).  Little orange circles next to a record signifies gold status (500,000 shipped/sales).

  • Speaking of which:  Congratulations to Chris Daughtry for earning triple-platinum status for his debut album, DAUGHTRYFantasia’s sophomore effort Fantasia recently earned gold status and Clive Davis’s fav Idol, Kelly Clarkson (not) has earned sextuple platinum status for her album Breakaway.
  • Idols are still managing to stay out of the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 this week.  The highest charting album is Daughtry, at #13.  However, album sales went up for all the Idols on the BB 200 this week, except Fantasia (-7%).  Bucky Covington’s debut album sales went up 17% this week.
  • However, there is good news for Fantasia. Her single, “When I See You” continues to climb the charts.  It is currently #2 on the Hot R&B Singles and Airplay charts.
  • Elliott Yamin’s “Wait For You” is also steadily climbing the charts.  It’s gone from #34 to #28 on the Billboard Hot 100, #52 to #45 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart, #20 to #16 on the Pop 100, #13 to #12 on the Pop 100 Airplay, and debuts on the Hot Adult Top 40 chart at #40.
  • Taylor Hicks’ new single “Heaven Knows” debuts on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart at #27.
  • Chris Daughtry’s “Home” remains at #1 this week on the Hot Adult Top 40 chart.
  • Mandisa’s “Only The World” continues in the #1 spot this week on the Hot Singles Sales chart.  If TPTB had released souvenir singles, as they have in the past,  for Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis, we might have had either one at the top of this chart this week.
  • …but since they decided to release their singles exclusive to iTunes and the American Idol download site, (sales at americanidol.com are not being submitted to Soundscan, so they don’t get included in the the BB charts) Jordin Sparks’ and Blake Lewis’ singles are quickly moving down–and off–the charts.

Taylor Hicks - ElvisFest Tupelo MS

More recaps, this one from Donna who saw Taylor Hicks at the Elvis Fest in Tupelo MI…

***************

Momma and I got into Tupelo about 1030am Saturday morning. It was too soon to check into our hotel room but we wanted to scope out the area so we took a walk down the main street. It turned out that there was a parade at 11am so we found some shade by a tree and sat down and watched. It was great..they had Elvis Fest Beauty Queens from tiny tots to their teens. They had some great floats. Elvis impersonators waved to the crowd all smiles. Someone even painted their poodle bright pink for the parade and had it wearing a leather jacket!
