The Next Great American Band: Top 3

Tonight is The Next Great American Band’s final performance show, and I’m gonna savor it, ‘case this show ain’t coming back next year. I think FOX thought they could command Friday nights with the magic of the 19 production team, but that thinking was, alas, a lot of hubris. Perhaps this experience has been a little humbling. No, everything you touch DOES NOT turn to gold, 19. But in the meantime, a really entertaining show was mishandled by the network, and it’s gone forever after next week. Dang.

Dominic starts the show by announcing that, “After an amazing 2 million votes, only 3 bands will take the stage…for the last time.” By the way, this is the first time they’ve announced vote totals. I’m guessing prior weeks have been pretty pathetic.

There are four bands waiting, Denver and the Mile High Orchestra, The Clark Brothers, Light of Doom and Sixwire. Only 3 bands will get to perform. Each of the top 3 will play 3 songs: One picked by the judges, one picked by the producers and one picked by the bands.

The Next Great American Band…SPOILERS!

Nigel Lythgoe Previews the Upcoming Season of American Idol

Producer, Nigel Lythgoe, spoke to reporters yesterday via a phone conference call.  The main topic of discussion was the upcoming season of American Idol. Season 7  premiers with a 2-hour show on FOX, Tuesday, January 15.

What Nigel Said…

YAY:  More kids, less mentors. The contestants can play instruments, at least in the early rounds.  There might be a Beatles night.  No fake eliminations during Idol Gives Back.

NEIGH: No plans to cut out bad singers during the audition phase to make room for more footage of potential contestants.  There are SEVERAL teenagers who could potentially make it to the semis.  Nigel is talking like he already knows who the Top 12 will be.  Can we vote first?

Nigel also talked a bit during the conference about The Next Great American Band.

Here are some choice quotes from the press conference:

The Next Great American Band: Top 4

I was so pissed off that Tres Bien! were eliminated last week, that it took me awhile to watch last week’s episode. Actually, I finally watched it Friday night while I was recording this week’s episode. In a nutshell–Ashley Clark is an incredible singer. The Clark’s version of “You’re In My Heart” was goosebump material. Dot Dot Dot–were still raising their game. Light of Doom’s lead singing improved. Sixwire were impeccable as always. But, Denver and the Mile High Orchestra–still a decent band playing lounge music fronted by Wonder White Bread. Which is why I thought Tres Bien’s demise was so untimely–particularly after their energetic performance of the Stones “Get Off of My Cloud” the week before.

Well, you know, Denver and the Mile High Orchestra came into this contest with PEOPLE. They already had a large following in the Contemporary Christian music community, and those people are watching and voting, voting, voting.

This week, the remaining bands sing a song by the band Queen in the first half of the show, then come back in the second half to perform an original. The videos feature the band’s impressions of Los Angeles.

The Next Great American Band: Top 7

Tonight’s theme: Lieber and Stoller, you know, those guys who helped guys like Elvis Presley rip off black artists. And there are those who will think black artists were ripped off again, as Franklin Bridge is eliminated tonight. I figured their demographic edge alone (only African American group in the bunch) would keep them afloat, but it was not to be.

And, I said they’d be one of the last three standing. Oops. Ok. New prediction. I’ve been in denial. Those metal-tots, Light of Doom are obviously not irking voters like they irk me. And hey, they are the Vote for the Worst pick! So…last three standing will be: Sixwire, The Clark Brothers and Light of Doom

Tonight’s video packages feature the band members talking about their roles in the group. Like one big happy family. Yippee!

More recap after the jump…

The Next Great American Band…SPOILERS!

Interview with Ian “Dicko” Dickson of NGAB

A real interesting and lengthy interview with Dicko here. His favorite bands are The Clark Brothers and Franklin Bridge. He thinks the 12 year old metal heads, Light of Doom, are too young, and that perhaps their parents are living through them, just a bit. He calls Sixwire “Hormone-replacement therapy for middle-aged women.” Ha ha, exactly why they will probably take it all…

As for what we can expect from the rest of the season:

So what’s in store for the final weeks of TNGAB? Dicko told us there’s a Rolling Stones theme week coming up (take that, American Idol!) and that there are some more big-name songwriters that the producers are currently in negotiations with. (This week, the music of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller – who penned hits for legends like Elvis Presley and The Drifters – is featured.) Dicko’s picks for theme nights would be Johnny Cash, U2, and REM – all fabulous ideas that we can keep our fingers crossed for.

The bands will be doing cover songs only for the next couple of weeks, and one act will be eliminated each week.

What bands are Dicko thankful for?

He names The Beatles, The Clash, and The Arctic Monkeys – “three generations that have inspired me”.

Dicko rulz!!!

The Next Great American Band: Top 8

I didn’t mind the audition phase of LGAB cut down to one episode, but now that the bands are competing, I wish the show were stretched out a bit. Next week is the Top 6? I hardly know these bands.

Despite the speeded up competition, the contestants are managing to improve their game every single week.

The show would really benefit from a live elimination show. I’ve been eagerly posting elimination spoilers, and will continue to do so. But, it really kills the suspense knowing who is staying and who is going ahead of time.

The Next Great American Band: Top 10

Discuss! All 11 of you who are watching…

********

Here is the deal. I’m going to recap this show every week, but I’m not going to drive myself crazy writing down every little detail. The ratings for this show are really abysmal, and actually, that’s too bad, ’cause all in all, it’s an entertaining show. Watching it reminds me of how stale American Idol has become, in many respects, after 6 seasons.

It starts with the judges. Johnny Rezeznik, Sheila E. and Dicko actually–ok wait for this–give constructive criticism! And their remarks are substantive! Dicko, who is playing the role of the Simonesque “tough” judge can be sarcastic, but his remarks are usually spot on. What I love most about Dicko is that, unlike Simon, he appears to be in the business because he actually loves music. Sheila E. can be a bit of a softie, but as a musician, she often comes up with good advice. Johnny Rezeznik needs to ignore the boos from audience when he says something negative. Like some of the bands tonight, he doesn’t seem to take criticism very well. Although his line, “Don’t boo my ass, I’m sick of you already!” was pretty funny.

After 6 seasons, the contestants on Idol often just roll their eyes at the judges when they criticize. At this point, they realize their remarks are a bunch of scripted crap designed to either manipulate or entertain the viewers at home. There is real drama to be had watching the faces of the contestants on NAGB as they take in honest, unflinching criticism from the panel. Some of them, like Laura from the all-girl band “Rocket” behave as if they’ve never been criticised honestly in their lives. The tension in the air makes for really compelling television.

This week’s episode was a big improvement over last week. For the most part, the bands had a hard time making the songs of the Iconic Mr. Bob Dylan their own. Tonight’s show featured the music of the much more user-friendly Elton John and Bernie Taupin. The results were often satisfying.

The Next Great American Band: Episode 1 Recap

The first episode of “The Next Great American Band” is jam-packed. Within two hours, the entire audition phase of the program is begun and finished. Unlike Idol, the producers here aren’t focusing on the freak show. Sure, your assorted oddballs show up here and there, but the trainwrecks aren’t overplayed. Most awesomely, we get a really good look at the bands who will be moving on to the Top 12, which starts next week, along with their accompanying back stories. I’d love to think that Friday night’s well-paced debut episode is a foreshadowing of the way the American Idol auditions will be edited next season. One can only hope.

Here’s the deal THOUSANDS of bands sent in their audition tapes. Anything went, apparently. Although the 60 bands that made the cut were overwhelming white and male–how did that happen? And mostly sing some variation of pop music. So, in the end all those Lithuanian Polka bands, or whatever were for naught…

The Next Great American Band Premiers Tonight

Update:

Wow, the show blew threw 60 bands in two hours, with very little filler. Lots of drama, and the trainwreck aspect was not over played.  I found the show very entertaining.  When Simon Cowell leaves Idol, (as he’s threatening to do) in 2009, I vote for Ian “Dicko” Dickenson as his replacement.  Hell, Dicko could replace him NOW and I wouldn’t be too upset. As a judge, he is a perfect blend of snark (without the cliched over-used put-downs) and sharp criticism.

I was a bit aghast that it took 90 minutes for any African-Americans to take the stage.  Up ’till then, the show was pretty much a sea of white faces.  And, why in the 21st century, is a band that happens to be all female still a novelty? By the way, The Rockets sucked.

More later.  Here is your top 12 (thanks hezz)

Tres Bien
Light of Doom
The Hatch
The Clark Brothers
Dot Dot Dot
The Muggs
Denver and the Mile High Orchestra
Sixwire
Cliff Wagner and the Ol’ #7
Franklin Bridge
Rocket
The Likes of You

Johnny Rzeznik, lead singer of the Goo Goo Dolls and one of the judges (along with Sheila E and Ian Dickson) on the new Fox TV show The Next Great American Band, describes it as “basically like a big battle of the bands.”

Producer Nigel Lythgoe has this to say about the American Idol-like show premiering tomorrow night at 8 pm on FOX: Continue reading ‘The Next Great American Band Premiers Tonight’

Idol Producers Advanced 49 Atlanta Auditioners to Randy, Paula and Simon

More on the Atlanta auditions from Rodney Ho at ajc.com:

Though I’ve heard typically Randy, Simon and Paula in the past have screened 75 to 150 people per city, they ended up seeing only 49 over 12 hours Wednesday, or about four people per hour, according to the Buzz item. Since Ryan Seacrest did his L.A. radio show live that day from the Star 94 studios from 9 to at least noon EST, that meant they started around lunch hour at the earliest and worked til past midnight. Nigel & Ken, the executive producers really trimmed the pool down big time or perhaps the talent pool wasn’t as deep as they expected. I may have to ask Nigel a question about that Tuesday when Fox holds a phone press conference about the “Idol” sister show “The Next Great American Band,” debuting next Friday. I’m not sure how many even got to see Nigel and Ken.

Coming up: Press conference for “The Next Great American Band” tomorrow…
