Chris Brown Cops a Plea–Ordered to Stay Away from Rihanna
For those of you who have been following the Chris Brown/Rihanna assault case, Brown copped a plea less than two hours before the start of a scheduled hearing. Rihanna was there and was set to testify.
Chris Brown will do six months of “community labor” but no time behind bars for assaulting the pop star Rihanna under the terms of a plea agreement reached this afternoon.
The R&B singer reached a deal with prosecutors less than two hours before the scheduled start of a hearing, in which his former girlfriend was prepared to testify about the violent altercation that left her bruised, bloodied and screaming for help last February on a Hancock Park side street.
Under the agreement, Brown, 20, will serve five years’ probation and take a year-long domestic violence prevention class. L.A. County Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg also ordered him to stay at least 50 yards away from Rihanna, 21, for the next five years.
After a lawyer for Rihanna said the singer thought the order was too severe given that they often attend the same industry functions, the judge said that at such public events Brown was required to stay only 10 yards away.
The judge said Brown can complete his sentence in his native Virginia, where he owns a home.
MTV was in the courtroom and has more details HERE. According to Rihanna’s attorney, she didn’t think the stay away order was necessary, but oh well–guess she won’t be hooking up with Brown anytime soon. As it should be. He got off pretty easy (well, easier than if I ruled the world…)

The fact that he had no previous criminal record, the probation/community service is standard. The only thing that may be a little different is that he gets to do his community service in VA.
He was smart to plead out though.
I think so too. Just a slap on the wrist basically. I hope Rihanna will be able to move on from this and find someone who will treat her with decency and respect. She is much better off without him!
I’m talking about my own sense of justice. Not the reality or the standard. lol.
Sounds pretty typical. I wish them both well and I hope he abides by the stay away order. I have my doubts, but I hope for the best.
I’d have like a code of hammarabi type sentence for Mr. Brown….like the kid that was caned in Singapore in the 80’s for graffiti writing, lol. Now in all seriousness, he got off easy, but I think part of it was Rihanna. I think she didn’t want him punished as severely as I think he deserved. I think there will be premiums paid for the pictures of them together….it’s gonna happen, sadly, I think.
The saddest person if that happens will be Chris Brown. He goes to the slammer for four years if he’s photographed with her.
Hopefully this will keep Chris and Rihanna apart. I get this unpleasant feeling that Rihanna hasn’t really come to terms with everything that has happened and that, given the opportunity, she would succumb to Chris’ pleas for forgiveness. It sounds like some of her advisors (parents, family, and close friends) are really watching out for her best interests and making sure that neither of these two have the opportunity to “hook up” again.
It’s very sad that many “victims” will consider this type of behavior a one time thing and convince themselves that the perpetrator will never do it again resulting in a continual cycle of abuse and reconciliation. Thank God that saner heads have prevailed with this one. Now I wonder if Chris will get his career back? And I wonder if the next woman in his life will assume that he won’t be going down that road again. I sincerely hope that this is the last time I ever hear of him being “in trouble”.
I totally agree with this. I agree with MJ. In my world of justice, he got off way too easy.
Yeah, he got off easy. I’m afraid that because of that, he won’t learn his lesson, too.
From Gilbert & Sullivan’s “The Mikado,” the chorus from a song called “A More Humane Mikado” :
Here are the complete lyrics, if interested:
I think the sentence is appropriate. I think people forget he’s still a teenager. He’s not a habitual offender. He deserves a second chance. Yes, his crime was horrible, but rehabilitation is better than eternal condemnation, especially for someone so young. He’s accepted responsibility and he will get treatment, which are the two most important things in my book.
I don’t think the punishment fit the crime. I think he just got off easy because of who he is. End of story.
Appalling – just appalling. Had he assaulted a stranger in the street – this guy would be going to jail. But because his victim was a woman heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d had a relationship with – not one damn day in jail. So what’s going to happen the next time he does this – ’cause he will, you know. Maybe not Rihanna – but whoever he’s dating will feel his fists, you can bet on it. I’ve volunteered in women’s shelters – they always do it again – always. An interdiction might have made a difference (jail time counseling) – but all this tells him is throw a little money at it and it will go away.
This whole thing, imo, is a major messup. Rhianna has in effect let the whole world know its ok to beat the shit out of her and she will let you out of it. The jerks of this world will be circling her now, they always look for a woman they can control. It didnt do Chris any favors either. He may only be a teen and no record, but he gets the message he can get out of anything now. A weekend at least behind bars mightve made an impression on him. Be a celebrity or have money and you can get out of anything, be an everyday Joe and they crucify you. I was married for years to a jerk like this. I couldnt get away from him because he was more dangerous when I got away and made trouble for my family. It took knocking me across my lawyers desk and breaking some ribs to finally get the law to give him some time. For those who think this is a one time thing. no way. They are always sorry, blame it all on you, cry a little and then the next day they are ready for action again. They don’t think like normal people, the paranoia is amazing. Its plain old bullying and they need some one to give them a dose or their own medicine, or not back down from giving them some time. No real consequences, in their mind, they didnt really do anything. I would love to be a fly on the wall and hear what Chris has to say when he tells his side of it. No doubt Rhianna had brass knuckles on and started it. Yeah, right.
This punk gets off with a slap on the wrist. Let’s hope he changes his ways.
Yep, after serving a day on jury duty, I found out this is how it works. When the main witness is ready to testify, a plea bargain is made. The suspect waits to see if this person is serious, and then when it appears they are-the lawyers have something to talk about.
I hope Rihanna is smart/secure enough to stay far, far away.
The only thing that gives me pause about Chris Brown is that he is a teen himself and that the grew up in an abusive household. So he clearly needs help IMO. That said, I don’t think being a celebrity and having all these people around you willing to feed your ego and give you a pass is helping him. Add the fact that he gets no jail time and you have a recipe for bad things I think. Yes he’s a felon now and as such can’t vote, plus he was ordered to take anger management classes and he will have to pick trash off the highway or something… but is that really enough? I hope it is for everyone’s sake.
