Hmm, I thought “On My Way Here” was really lame until I heard the other ones. I guess it’s not so bad! Can’t wait for my mom to give me this CD as a “gift”!
I love Clay and think he is an incredible singer but have never bought any of his music. But do have a couple of his idol performances on my ipod. Frankly these songs all sound the same to me, and frankly….boring. Love ya Clay, understand doing loving romantic songs but how about some variety in the songs? What happened here. Want him to always do well, so hoping there’s more better to come.
LOL, I can’t hear them well, keep stopping and starting. Cheese, your Mom loves you right? :)
Yeah the songs do sound kind of boring. When you think about it considering the track record of runner-ups its amazing Clay is still releasing albums five years after his season.
You know, I can really hear DA recording this type of album. Really, I can.
I think we all could. Although I have no idea how far Archie is going to get by producing a Clay-like album. Or 5…or more. *shudder*
By the way, Clay — lose. The hair. Now. Please.
I think he still needs it for Spamalot, no?
Thanks for the clips! I was at work and missed the show. He sounds great! I especially liked “Everything I Don’t Need” and “Where I Draw the Line.” I’m going to have to order the album.
Wasn’t that a wig? Besides, he’s had the hair even before he was cast in Spamalot, I believe.
I love all the songs except On My Way Here, and personally I think Everything I don’t need is unlike anything he ever done so far. but IMHO he could’ve chosen faster tracks to replace the other ballads. These QVC selections really don’t do the album justice cos if you listen to the previews of the tracks below, it’s actually quite an eclectic mix. there are even rock-type songs like Falling and Ashes.

p.s: yes, he wears wig in Spamalot. I don’t get the hair either.
I think these particular songs do sound a lot alike, especially the first 3. Don’t get me wrong, I love Clay, voted for him and was furious when Ruben won and Clay didn’t. I’ll have to check out the samples on Amazon to get a better feel for what’s on the CD.
I hope he has great luck selling these on QVC.
I also want to add that I don’t think David A’s talent anywhere matches Clay’s.
I agree that David no where near matches Clay — he could only hope to be able to sing that well and as many different ways in the future. I don’t really get all the hype about him on the show.
I think this CD is sounding great so far. It’s got a lot or mixture and variety on it and he sounds great on it.
I loved Clay on the show, and liked his Christmas and covers CD. This one…hmmm, not so much.
And I have to agree with Hisaki. That hair does not suit him. At all.
I had to turn it off midway the second song. The songs, imo, were not good ones. Clay is best when he powers his voice and hits those high notes. The two songs I heard were softly sung, I couldnt understand most of the lyrics. The spamalot hair didnt help any. Hope he sells a ton for his fans though. Anyone know how many he sold on qvc? It was 3000 when I turned it off.
Tyler and Primeminister, i find your comments interesting because Clay has been often criticized for specializing too much in power ballads and for singing covers. I’ve read reactions from fans and non-fans and quite a few of them do not understand why he chooses On my Way Here as first single because it’s a typical Clay Aiken song. Other tracks, though, are more indicative of what Kipper said about the album having a “That’s Clay Aiken?” vibe. JMO.
I have all his albums…I like a few songs from Measure of a Man and I love the Christmas CD but I rarely play the covers one. This one looks like the first album from him that I’ll play on a loop. I guess it’s all a matter of taste…some people want him to stay in his lane and some people want him to branch out a bit.
as for the songs sounding soft, I don’t know if it’s because of the poor QVC sound mix as reported by some people who were there.
Thanks to mj for providing these vids. I was very curious to see how this appearance turned out. I don’t think the hair do is very flattering to him, although it looks nice (if a little too styled) on the CD cover photo.
The songs were OK and he’s in great voice, but not enough for me to make a purchase. I’m sure this CD will please his fans since these songs are originals for him as opposed the the previous CD with all the covers.
very smart move from the Clay camp to sell his cd on QVC, sure it will pay off with huge numbers. I enjoy Clay and his voice, voted for him on AI, but never bought a cd or attended a concert. A coworker at my last job was a Claymate and her adoration was a bit spooky to me, she bought me cds, and was playing Measure of a man continually at work when it was released. It drove people crazy.. Clay’s voice is pleasant, the songs here merely okay for me, seems very one dimensional, easy listening
This is okay, but long term listening, probably not.
Yikes on the hair, what was Clay thinking?
It’s an ingenuous way to sell an album. I’m not a Clay Aiken - type fan singing wise but I admire how hard he works at it. The song is pretty. The hair is because of Spamalot.
I think these cd prices are a bit too high — $19.00 — you get 12 songs, it shouldn’t be that high.
you can read the info on the video there in blue letters. the CD comes with a bonus 5 track CD/DVD.
Yes, please.
It really looked to me like they were using extensions to make his hair longer for Spamalot. When they did that clip of him - it kind of looked like a real scalp. So, perhaps he’s keeping it longer to make the extension thing easier. I don’t like it either - and I think it looks awful on the album cover - but I think there’s a chance he doesn’t have much choice but to keep it long.
And, really, anything is better than that hair he showed up with at the finale a couple of years ago.
I’m not a Clay fan, and I won’t buy this CD. But, really the snippets sound pretty good to me. And, I’m another vote in the David A is not quite up to Clay’s talent level yet. I’m not really into Clay’s style of singing, but I can easily see that he’s got an amazing voice.
I think this is going to be interesting to watch. Since Clay either refuses to put up money for radio play or there is something more nefarious going on at the radio stations, QVC is a really good alternative.
I hate the acoustics in the QVC studio, but like the songs. I don’t have a lot of easy listening, but will be adding this (and Clay’s gorgeous voice) to my collection. I’d be getting this CD just to have a studio copy of Lover All Alone which is unbelievable good.
Can you still get the QVC offer? I’ve never purchased anything this way so have no clue what’s going on.
The initial 12,000 sold out. QVC is so odd, when they run out of stock, they just switch to the next show. That’s how you know they sold out. They don’t waste any time moving on once they are out of a product.
They are taking orders for the next shipment. here but it doesn’t ship on May 6th like the first batch. These ones ship a week later.
Gelfling, thanks. I just used MJ’s link to order Phil’s CD and pre-order Clay’s. I’ll keep my eye on the QVC thing though, because I wonder what the additional 5 songs are.
t2 - the additional songs are “live” recordings of Measure of a Man, Invisible, I will Carry you, a new song - When I need You and then a separate disc with This is the Night Video (unreleased). It is an old video that he filmed a few years back but at that time he felt that it wasn’t really him but now they are re-leasing it.I wonder what changed his mind? I remember seeing bootlegs of it and I thought it was really edgy but I guess at that time he was still new to the business and felt that it was not his style. I loved it though.
I think he has chosen the wrong song for his first single. Falling and Ashes are better suited to promote than a ballad. But all in all, his fans will not be disappointed with the CD. Kipper is an excellent producer and I think the CD will do well.
I love Clay and I am glad he got to record what he really wanted to do and not be mandated by Clive Davis.
