Idols represent! Yay! :D
Woooo! Rock on, Idols!
Kelly, Carrie, Fantasia and Daughtry all rock!
Good for them, I am glad that even if Fantasia did not have great sales for her album she was still nominated.
Good luck for them all. I have feeling that Carrie and Daughtry will be winners for sure. Maybe Kelly and Reba too.
I really like that Fantasia song. I hope it wins. But she has no chance against Alicia Keys.
Some predictions:
Song Of The Year: Hmmm, tough category. I think Amy should win this one, but I’m not sure how the voters will react to her train wreck o a personal life (it shouldn’t matter, but it might). “Hey, There Delilah” is a Cinderalla story that might charm the voters and nobody can deny that “Umbrella” was a monster hit. “Before He Cheats” was also a huge hit and crossed many formats. Depends if the voters are tired of voting for Carrie. I’m going to guess “Umbrella”
Best Rock Album: I think Bruce owns this one. He’s a legend who is back on track.
Best Rock Song: I think that Ace and Chris might take this one (if the legends of Bruce and the White Stripes don’t hold sway again…could be Bruce’s night). This would recognize that Daughtry had a big hit without having to get into the issue of the band.
Best Country Collaboration With Vocals: I think Reba and Kelly will get this one.
Best Contemporary R&B Album: I don’t know. Keyshia Cole is getting a lot of positive press, but Fantasia is very popular with a lot of cred.
Best Country Song: The only song on the list I recognize is BHC and I think it will win. It’s won a lot of awards already and it was a cross-over hit. But, maybe I’m missing the context of the other contenders because I’m not plugged into the country scene.
ETA: Since I started this post, an entire bunch of new nominations were posted. I’ll have to think about them
You missed one for Fantasia:
Best R&B Song
* When I See U
Louis Biancaniello, Waynne Nugent, Erika Nuri, Kevin Risto, Janet Sewel & Sam Watters, songwriters (Fantasia)
* Beautiful Flower
India.Arie & Joyce Simpson, songwriters (India.Arie)
* Hate That I Love You
M.S. Eriksen, T.E. Hermansen & Shaffer Smith, songwriters (Rihanna Featuring Ne-Yo)
* No One
Dirty Harry, Kerry Brothers & Alicia Keys, songwriters (Alicia Keys)
* Teachme
Ivan Barias, Adam W. Blackstone, Randall C. Bowland, Carvin Haggins, Johnnie Smith II & Corey Latif Williams, songwriters (Musiq Soulchild)
I’ll add that…thanks
Congrats to all the idols! Is this the biggest nomination representation yet?
And wow, that Song of the Year category is STACKED. Before He Cheats, Hey There Delilah, Rehab, and Umbrella were all huge– and actually good songs to boot. I’d like to see Rehab win I think, but any of the four would be worthy choices; they all have their merits.
Is it wrong that I want “It’s Not Over” to win for songwriting even though I like two of the nominated songs better? Go Ace!
Good to see Wilco nominated, too. :)
Wouldn’t it be amazing if Ace Young was a Grammy winner? LOL
There is a nomination for “Home” that I don’t see up there either. I think it is pop/rock vocal? Not sure…but “Home” was nominated for something.
I have a pet peeve, that SONG of the year, and RECORD of the year seem to be confused when it comes to the voting.
A Record of the year should excel in production and performance. The nominated records are REHAB, IRREPLACEABLE, UMBRELLA, THE PRETENDER (Foo Fighters) and WHAT GOES AROUND.. I’m not familiar with The Pretender, except I’m sure it’s not a cover of Jackson Browne.. The other four, while not all my taste, are all good sounding tracks. They might not be my top five records of the year, but I can’t quibble with their inclusion.
A best Song of the Year, IMO should be a song that could stand up to different arrangements and covers, with great melody and lyrics. In other words, one that we can expect to hear from Idol contestants for years to come.
Before He Cheats covers all bases. Umbrella does not — while it’s catchy, the lyrics are repetitive and the melody just about non-existent. And they stole the story line from the Hollies’ Bus Stop!
Delilah has some appeal, but the melody is pretty simplistic, the sparse arrangement is what sells this record.
I would substitute “Irreplaceable”, with lyrics that tell a clever story and an ear-worm of a melody. Or Michael Buble’s “Everything” which will be a pop crooner standard.

* Hey There Delilah
Plain White T’s
Track from: Every Second Counts
[Hollywood Records]
* Window In The Skies
U2
Track from: U218 - Singles
[Interscope Records]
Margauex, Irreplaceable is not nominated for Song of the Year. I agree with you about Umbrella not belonging in that category though. But Before He Cheats, Rehab, and Like A Star are all solid songs, IMO.
Opps! Thanks MJ.
tinawina: I realize that Irreplaceable was not nominated, which is why I gave my opinion that it should have been nominated instead of Umbrella.
I haven’t heard “Like a Star”, I’ll chase it down soon. Thanks for the recommendation.
OMG!!! I can’t believe Daughtry was nominated. This is so exciting!!! I’m sure they won’t win (BSWD!!!) but still how cool. Before He Cheats is still eligible to be nominated even though the album has been out for over two years? Congrats to Carrie & Fantasia! And Mandisa!!!
I’ve been feeling sorry for Ace for not doing as well as the other S5 guys. But now he can call himself a Grammy nominee. So S5 guys rule. I’ll watch the show just to see him in the audience. :)
aww i m so happy for ace :)
LOL. I find the entire Grammy nomination process bizarro. Thanks for explaining the criteria. Please send that to the Grammy committee. Generally, with the Oscars, my favourites might not get nominated or win, but I can usually say “Okay, I can see why that could be considered good acting/producing/costumes/etc”. But with the Grammy’s, I’m so often left to scratch my head and wonder at what actual criteria is being used (”My Humps” won a Grammy!?! And I don’t even know who some of those BNA nominees are. Amy for the win! Otherwise Feist! Taylor Swift is always six kinds of off key when I hear her sing live, so I don’t want her to win although I hear she’s a good songwriter if you can’t get past the sharp/flat notes to hear the words)
So, using the criteria you have spelled out, I’m not sure who should win that Best Song category. I love “Rehab”, but I’m not sure how anybody can cover it without sounding total karaoke. That song requires a very distinct vibe. “Umbrella” is a novelty song, but the Grammys sometimes reward the best seller. I’m going to disagree with you about BHC being the song of the year. I think it too is a novelty song. Fun to belt out while driving in the car, but really, the lyrics are very trite IMO (although, the one about the polo is clever). I don’t know the Corrine Bailey song, but based on the criteria, I think that only “Hey, There Delilah” fits it to a tee (a Plain White-T). The beautiful simplicity of the melody can allow other artists to really change it and own it (think about “Yesterday”).
That said, I still think “Rehab” is the best and most innovative song of the bunch and I love singing along to “Before He Cheats” (great video for that one too).
When I make predictions, I always try to weigh in the factors that I think the voters might take into consideration (musical legends, people who got unfairly ignored in the past, long overdue awards, financial success, buzz). I also think that songs that have been out for a long time are hindered (they seem so last year because it takes so long for the voting to take place). That’s where I think Alicia’s songs have an advantage this year. They are hot and new. Anyway, my predictions aren’t who I think are the best, it’s who I think might win (and still, I’m almost always wrong…LOL)
The winner of song of the year goes to the song writer right, and not the singer?
Sometimes on these award shows it seems to me that the “big” stars, esp. legends in the business, get the award based on just that. George Strait won CMT awards the last 2 yrs and IM a country fan and had never heard the song till he sang it last year on the show. It didnt have huge sales like Carries Jesus Take the Wheel or BHC but still he won in a couple of categories. His album, full of cute songs, IMO, did not have the important songs that every other album in his categories did. This is just how I see if of course. :) and using him only as an example. I did like Give It Away, but still think it wasnt that big of a song to win.
For what it’s worth, here’s a different arrangement of Umbrella that was performed on this season’s Australian Idol by eventual winner Natalie Gauci:

Wow, that’s a lot of Daughtry nominations. Chris had better start shining his best wallet chain - he’s bound to make at least one trip up on stage.
It would be nice to see a bunch of Idols awarded, but if Ace Young beats out Jack White for a songwriting award, I might protest. I’m happy to see Feist and Amy Winehouse with so many nominations - those were two of my favorite albums of the year.
The Grammy’s have always had some wac nominations and winners. However, that does not diminish putting either “Grammy nominee” or “Grammy winner” in front of one’s name.
That always looks good on your resume fer sure.
Wow Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Jennifer Hudson won yet ANOTHER AWARD, even if she didn’t write the song, she sang the song!
I don’t think Fantasia will win anything because she’s up against Alicia Keys and some heavy hitters. Carrie and Daughtry have good chances of winning.
Ken Barnes has a lengthy analysis on all Idol Grammy nominations:
http://blogs.usatoday.com/idolchatter/2007/12/idols-in-the-gr.html
Guess what, he is a Grammy voter so he knows how it works..
Very interesting, jobbix, thanks for the link to Ken Barnes observations and analysis of the Grammy nominations.
“Umbrella” is a terrific pop song. I’ve heard several covers of it by different artists, and it stands up. It’s definitely the kind of song that could be redone by someone else and still be a hit for them.
I like Rehab because its incredibly brave of AW because its just so personal, but “Back to Black” is her song in my mind. Brilliant.
It’s tough to be nominated and to win a Grammy so I’m just happy that Chris was nominated.
Me too bean. Of course, I’d love for them to win, but I’m just happy they were nominated. Go Chrace! ;)
Hopefully, Amy can get her shit straight so she’s not wacked out on stage accepting awards. Because she’ll definitely win a few. Her album is fantastic.
ETA: And hopefully, Kanye will win too… because if he doesn’t? OMG at the bitch-fest we’ll be hearing.
Yay Ace!!
Kelly/Reba and Brad/Carrie are both excellent nominations in the country colloboration category I hope one of them wins it!
Ken Barnes:
Well, that’s comforting. I thought it sucked, too. lol
