Also last night, on the show TV Watercooler Randy Jackson was interviewed. They got to talking about David Osmond and the talent coming out of Salt Lake City this coming season. Randy pointed out, “You know we had our boy last season, our runner up Archuleta, David, ‘Archie,’ as we call him, from there.” They then showed of a clip of him, from a while back, walking on the treadmill thingy for the TV guide photo shoot.

Anything that gets his name and face out on the airwaves, regardless of how brief, is good exposure for David. :thumbup_tb:

I completely agree with this. I want critics to evaluate artists on what they are doing now, not just some preconceived notion of what they thought or heard they were like during Idol. If Taylor Swift stinks in a live performance, please have the guts to go against the popular flow and say so.

If you just go on the fan board for David A, you would find that there are many, many people who have been smitten by his voice and have been drawn back into music, both musicians and nonmusicians alike. So, even though people may not be able to articulate or give reasons why they like great chops, many (if they will allow their mind to get beyond their biases) will somehow notice.

Personally, I am frikin addicted to these performances lol. He has improved SO much since AI. love love these. I want to go to one of these concerts; I hope he comes to KC someday.

IMHO a great many people go to concerts, not to hear a singer, but to have their fundamental base feelings titillated.

That part I kind of agree with. If I just wanted to hear the singer, I’d put on the CD. There’s a reason it’s called a show. That said, I also want see the performance and to hear the singer– the voice is a crucial component of the music! And what I look for in music is in fact, to have my fundamental feelings– ok, I wouldn’t choose the word titillated, but yeah, I guess I want the music to move me on a base level. Sometimes that could mean a performance where the singer is just standing there and interpreting a song, and other times, it will involve my other senses. I like to be entertained in different ways. That doesn’t sound crazy to me, but maybe that makes me sheep. Baaah.

ETA: I just want to say, I’ve been enjoying the links on this thread. O Holy Night is my fave and Archie killed it. *tears* Also, he’s getting super comfortable and good with these interviews– WTG! AND, I also think Carrie and Archie are good live performers.

The majority of the music buying public are tone deaf and untrained and donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have the ability to listen much less appreciate what is musically good or great. They only want to be à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“entertainedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬  through the use of gimmicks and sight stimulation.

What’s musically “good” or “great” is not carved in stone. It’s really a matter of opinion, I think.

I see it as different strokes for different folks. I don’t see anything wrong with a stage show that’s just pure spectacle. Las Vegas has been thriving on that sort of performance for years. It’s nothing new.

It’s really just a matter of what people prefer–it has nothing to do with being “tone deaf” or untrained, imo. Some may love the pure singer, others want a visual and musical experience, others may just like the dancing. I’d say critics are also varied in their tastes as well–just like the average consumer.

I’ve been reading criticism for many years, as well as going to lots of live performances, and based on my personal experience, I have to disagree with that statement.

I’ve heard countless “sheep” ex tole the virtues of the flashy entertainer because that is what they are told and sold. Most critics only write what the untrained masses want to read and hear, otherwise they would be out of a job soon enough.

Wow! That’s very interesting. I can understand Z100 putting up the 1000 Miles video to help promote their upcoming Jingle Ball, but B97 in New Orleans seems totally random, but really great news! Any publicity is good.

I still read the occasional harsh Carrie Underwood reviews. Sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s sold millions of records and people still find something to criticize in her shows.

Selling millions of records means she’s immune to negative reviews? Critics who go to her shows are critiquing her performances, not her records. Taylor Swift is selling her new album at an incredible clip right now, but I’ve seen her live performances, and they are pretty bad, at least in my opinion.

And of course, your mileage will always vary, which is why 2 people will have a completely different opinion on the same performance. For folks who only require dulcet tones, Carrie’s performances are more than fine. But some folks want more than that.

Once critics and cynics get in their minds that “robotic” is the term to describe an artist, they rarely stray from that becoming robotic in their tired and recycled reviews of every performance for years on after. I’m sure even when Archie is like 30 and probably still performing, people will still refer to him as that pageant kid that got his start on Idol. :wacko_tb:

Add David Archuleta to the list of singers who want to act.

The American Idol star, 17, says he got a taste of actingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ and he liked ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ when he recently shot a guest spot on Nickelodeon’s iCarly.

“I think it would be fun to do more,” Archuleta told me Saturday at the Holiday of Hope tree-lighting ceremony in Hollywood, which benefited children’s HIV/AIDS organization One Heartland. “It’s interesting. I’d love to do it and get into character and have lines to say.”

He certainly didn’t have to do much to get into character for iCarly.

“It was just a quick appearance as myself, but it was a lot of fun,” Archuleta said. “I know I’m not the greatest actor or anything.” (You can decide for yourself when the episode airs in the spring.)

For now, Archuleta has a crazy schedule to contend with. He’s been crisscrossing the U.S. and Canada to perform at radio station holiday concerts.

“But I don’t think we have [work] really planned around the Christmas holiday,” he said. “That’s when you really need to spend time with your family.”

And then it will be back to work. He lists fellow American Idoler Jordin Sparks as someone he’d like to work with, as well as Jason Mraz.

“Jason would be an amazing person to collaborate with, but I feel I have some growing and maturing to do before I get to that point,” Archuleta said. “Maybe someday.”

I went to a Christmas tree lighting benefiting Children with HIV/AIDS last night. It was so sad to watch the montages people had put together and hear them speak about it all. I worked with the man who coordinated the event on a different charity (a Pancreatic cancer walk/run) a couple months back. He is really nice and cool! And guess who was performing? David Archuleta! Yup! He sang a couple Christmas songs and some of his songs from his CD. I must say, when he sang à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Oh Holy Nightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬  (my favorite Christmas song), I could barely hold back the tears. It was a moving performance.
