David Archuleta – Apologize – Hartford, CT – VIDEO

David Archuleta began his summer tour, opening for Demi Lovato Sunday night in Hartford, CT. Here he is, sitting behind the piano, singing an impassioned rendition of OneRepublic’s “Apologize”.

A Fathers Day message of sorts? (rhetorical question, peeps)

It’s good to see Archie back at work after what must have been some very unpleasant days for him and his family.

Video after the JUMP…

I was a little iffy on this through the first verse, but the second verse was really, really good.

Although, I hate watching concert videos because thousands of fans singing off-key never sounds good.

it conveys to me that heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s at least smart enough to know that he still has some growing and maturing to do as an artist before he fully takes ownership of what is to be his à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ definitiveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ sound, or voiceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ at 18, regardless of how long heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s been in the music game, there is still a lot of living, and learning and processes he must undergo that can only serve to deepen his musical outputà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ i think he understands that while many may think he has, or should have been, foisted into the pop arena fully formed, he is giving himself the time to discover just where he wants to be artisticallyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ and my hope is that time and the natural maturation process will bring about the growth in his musicality he desires, as well as his fans.

Okay, I get it. When you said above that this quote showed “what he is aiming for,” I figured you must mean something more concrete than what you’ve just said here. But since you meant — he’s aiming to know more so he can decide exactly what he’s aiming for, then, yeah, I can go with that. And, yeah, I agree that there’s nothing at all wrong with it.

As I said, I don’t think it’s necessarily so easy to put yourself into one of the music-genre boxes that are out there. And, frankly, I wouldn’t mind if he redefined himself in every album he ever does — there are lots of things he could do well. But I suppose the record company would mind a lot.

I was surprised he’s doing Apologize on tour and he was really good on Sunday. I wish he was doing Crazy though. I read he’s doing it for the VIP crowd.

    His new intro -

I love David’s new intro. Giant David FTW. lol Notice that’s an adult male fan who took that video and he has all the performances from last night in PA uploaded.

edit: you need to read my guidelines. rude posts will be edited, eventually, I will ban you

  • frogcooke:

Btw the tour isnt selling ‘horribly’ its selling fine since they are doing basically half arenas, and most of the time the upper seats arent even for sale. You’ll probably get some good seats if you search for them now because they recently released more tickets.

some of these venues dont even list david at all on their calender of event. Take the Atlanta one for example(they just did their 14.99 deal again and only now used a ad with david on it, but the calender still only lists it as a demi show.

some fan in dallas said if she wasnt a fan(meaning checks online etc etc), she would have no idea he was even coming there. She only has heard ads for demi on the radio.

I hear the KC one doesnt even come up on ticketmaster for him at all unless you somehow follow a link posted on his ning site.

Ain’t that the truth, I think. My casual friends in the 18-25 age range seems so much more mature than David. Maybe it’s the lack of college experience, maybe it’s his unique environment, I dunno. In order to mature as an artist, he needs to mature as a person, imo. It will be hard for David to cross over to the young adult audience if he doesn’t start using some more mature and edgy material. Plenty of young adults’ lives have some angst, discontent, fear, dispair in them and it’s hard for them to identify with David’s uniform positivism. It comes across as fake and irrelevant even though it should come across as hopeful and encouraging.

Funny you think that. I think plenty of young adults have hope, striving for better, and pride in them and David’s music comes across real to them. Maybe it’s just WHO it is. If they are angst than maybe the edgy music is what relates to them. If they are positive and upbeat than they are looking for that type of music also.
I look at most music that receives awards and they are not angsty songs. They are upbeat, positive vibe songs. David would do well to keep with that theme.
I think one of the great characteristics David has as a singer is his maturity in his voice. That is one of the things that attracted so many to him on Idol. He has it in him, I just think Jive has steered him towards younger listeners. David has said though that his next album he wants to have a more mature sound. I am hopeful of that.
Wasn’t it Larry King and David Cook who agreed that David is way mature at his age.

  • christine:

I think mature now days gets mixed up with socially mature. Meaning that many young adults today are experimenting with sexual relations at a younger age, experimenting with drugs, borrowing larger amounts than what they can realistically afford for nice car and toys. That kind of activity is not necessarily mature. I think mature is somehow being redefined in american pop culture.

  • christine:

“Theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re about being cool, grownup, and feelinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ sexy as an 11-year-old girl can, out on the town and screaminà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ in the arena.”

This explanation is another reason why I see David as mature. As far as mature for an 18 year old. If he came out on stage and acted like he was a grownup that would not look good either. He is not acting up or down in my opinion. So many of these younger artists today try and act adult before there years.

I am fascinated at David for just the very opposite reason that he embraces his youth and is an example to those his age that it’s ok to just be a “youth” still. Not to rush into adult matters and cares. To enjoy it! And he shares youthfulness when he talks which is refreshing and reassuring to many.

I just bought tickets to the show in Atlanta. It’s this coming Monday, and apparently they had a lot more tickets to sell. I got an email from Gwinnett Arena with an offer to buy tickets for $14.99. I couldn’t resist. I’m taking my 11 year old son and 9 year old daughter.

My 13 year old daughter and I are going to Idol Tour on July 31.

  • frogcooke:

^^ awesome hope you enjoy it!

  • Well he sang it better than Kris, but it still really did nothing for me.
This girl sings this song amazingly well and shames both of the guysà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

I actually quite like Kris’ studio version, maybe even a bit more than the original by OneRepublic but I think the best live cover version I’ve heard/seen is that by Theo Tams, who won Canadian Idol last year:

    Amen sistah!

  • My mom was going to try for a VIP ticket upgrade for us but Archie’s is closed. :(

Ticketmaster does not show Gwinnett under Archie’s name. When we go under Demi’s name she still has VIP’s floor up front. :(

Will they trade Demi for Archie if we buy hers? lol :( idts

Dang Archie for selling out his. :(

    I completely agree that DAà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s version above isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t the best Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve ever heard, by a long shot.

As much as I like this version, I agree it’s not even close to many of his better renditions. In fairness, I don’t know that he’s all that confident on the keyboard. He avoided a lot of the runs in the tour version etc and I think it’s because he focuses so much on the keys.

I absolutely love the grand red curtain opening to his set. The heart thumping is brilliant.

Kinda wish he was doing YEDL and Barriers thoughà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ lol lol

A big WORD to this. I don’t know why he rarely performs YEDL. That’s my favorite song off the album. ALTNOY never, ever grabbed me nor did Touch My Hand. Zero Gravity, YEDL, Barriers and You Can all have hit potential. Is it too late for any of them now?

Wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t it Larry King and David Cook who agreed that David is way mature at his age.

I definitely agree that he’s mature in his thoughts about his morals, values, standards, faith, music…. but I admit I find him very ‘child like’ in his interests. I think he’s been pretty sheltered for most of his life.

I am fascinated at David for just the very opposite reason that he embraces his youth and is an example to those his age that ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s ok to just be a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“youthà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ still.

He’s going on 19 though. That doesn’t ring “youth” to me so much as “adult”. He needs to embrace adulthood and sometimes I don’t know that he wants to. I’m not trying to give you a hard time because I really can appreciate what you’re saying. I just see it differently I guess.

  • annabelina:

Well, I’ve always loved Archie’s version of this song, and wow his voice has gotten SO much stronger and steadier singing this song since the AI tour, and he’s accompanying himself on the piano too! Go go Archie!

A Fathers Day message of sorts?

Lol! As terrible as that situation was, a little angst could do his music some good. (Wow, that sounded okay in my head, but terrible once I actually wrote it out. I feel cruel.) MJ planted that idea in my head, so in the beginning while I was watching it, I couldn’t stop thinking about his dad, but by the end it had been driven out of my mind by his singing.

  • carolinacharms:

I think sometimes society confuses or equates sexual provocativeness with “maturity.” How sad.

  • KathyH:

    Agree, carolinacharms.

Review of David and Demi’s show in Wilkes-Barr, PA last night:

    http://blogs.mcall.com/lehighvalleymusic/2009/06/lovato-pleases-crowd-plots-future-in-wilkesbarre-show.html

    snip

In his 50-minute, 11-song set, Archuleta drew screams not just for great singing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ his big notes on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Hold Onà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“You Canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ were worthy à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ but for just being a crowd-pleasing young guy. (He also got screams just for a small hand wave when his back-lit shadow appeared on the closed curtain before it rose for him.)

Now a year removed from his à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ second-place finish, Archuleta has grown into a stage presence that can command arenas. Opening with his current hit, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“A Little Too Not Over You,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ he bounced all over the expansive set, gestured more confidently and sang more assuredly.

    snip

All the while, the 18-year-old Archuleta seemed confident and content à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ as if he likes where heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s at. And so does his audience.

I’ve always thought “Hold On” should have been the song title for “My Hands.” LOL

I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get any à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“father hidden messageà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ from that. David is above and beyond that. Leave that with the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“try to get anything dirt on David Archuletaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ crowd.

Eh. It was really a rhetorical question meant to point out the irony, only. I have no idea what David is thinking when he’s singing his songs, and don’t spend any time thinking about it.
