David Archuleta – Crush – Debuts at #2 on The Billboard Hot 100
David Archuleta’s new single, “Crush” will debut this week at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. That’s according to reliable sources who regularly leak Soundscan numbers online.
“Crush” has set some records:
- The highest debut, at #2, on the Hot 100 this year.
- The highest debut of all Idol album singles on the Hot 100
- The highest position of all Idol album singles (tied with Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone”) on the Hot 100.
- The highest chart position for an Idol, period, since Taylor Hicks coronation single, “Do I Make You Proud” debuted at #1 in 2006.
I’ll bet I’m missing something! At any rate, thanks to the peeps who confirmed these stats for me. And a big congratulations to David Archuleta on his huge chart debut. It’s an incredible accomplishment.

THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKIN’ ABOUT ARCHIE!
Umm, go Archie? I bought it to help him out, but I won’t feel that need when his album comes out, unless the rest of the songs are a lot better.
Congrats to Archie, though! I have no doubt he’ll do well with Jive behind him. Look how well Jordin has done and S6 wasn’t nearly as popular.
WOW!!! #2???? Archie, I am sooo happy for you! I can’t wait to hear what the rest of his album will sound like!!
Yes, comparison games can only lead to grief. Apples/oranges and all that. Plus, nobody has to fail for somebody else to be a success. There is room for everybody.
But, I will come out and say, forget comparing “Crush” to Idol singles period. He’s playing with the big boys now. “Crush” did amazingly well for any single from any type of album.
> The highest debut, at #2, on the Hot 100 this year.
That says quite a bit, in my opinion.
I came here to congratulate Archie on his accomplishments. Congratulations and much success in the future.
I don’t know why some want to make comparisons – let’s just have joy for him. If this degenerates into a fan war – then I’m leaving bi-partisanship behind and going back to only rooting for DC.
Let’s instead set the example set by both Davids – there is room for success for both.
WELL DONE DAVID JAMES ARCHULETA – Those who were with you from the beginning knew down to our souls you were something special, and have never wavered in our belief that you are destined, as Paula told you after you sang IMAGINE, for SUPERSTARDOM… soak it all in tonight, little brother - this one is for you… :clap_tb:
ggdoorsfan…..that was so nice. i second that!!!
Yep, what Jan said. I have a feeling no one is happier for Archie than Cook, and Archie will be the 1st in line to high-five Cook when it’s his turn, so…it’s all good.
Yay Archie! Way to go, little one. :thumbup_tb:
We don’t need to lecture each other on how to behave.
Let’s keep this thread focused on Archie and his single, not on discussing each other. Thank you!
also I would just like to mention, this is the highest debut on the Hot 100 in almost 2 years, since Fall Out Boy debuted at #2 with “This Ain’t a Scene, it’s an Arms Race” on January 18, 2007.
CONGRATULATIONS ARCHIE!!!!………….FOR CLARIFICATION, HIS FIRST BIG HIT WAS…….”BILLLEEEEEEEE ROCKEEEEEEEE”
That is amazing! I’m so proud! I haven’t even heard “Crush” on the radio yet and it’s #2?! Thats awesome!!!
This season’s contestants are gonna further rock the billboard charts!
Can’t think of anything else to say tonight about the way I, and millions of David’s fans feel about him and his success.. this quote, from an interview David gave earlier this month in a Spanish language magazine. pretty much sums it up:
à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“This show was not easy for him, he just made it look easy,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ says Michael Orland, pianist and musical director for American Idol, about Archuleta, who will graduate from high school next year. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“He came as a genius and left as a genius. All the participants aspired to reach his level.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ em> :king_tb:
Got this from IDF, need some verification if this is true.
“Actually, I think “Crush” does hold the record for the latter (highest first-week chart position in the Hot 100’s 50-year history for a lead single from a debut album). I just checked Wikipedia’s entry for “Doo Wop (That Thing)”:
“Doo Wop (That Thing)” is a 1998 by American Hip hop singer/rapper Lauryn Hill, included on her debut solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
While NOT Hill’s first solo single (she had previously released “The Sweetest Thing” and a cover of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” …) “Doo Wop” was her first, and some consider only major solo success.”
It doesn’t seem like it would be very easy to compare the two performances, in any event. DC’s was a coronation single; DA’s was not (which has pluses and minuses for both). DC’s was released right after the AI finale; DA’s was not (which is a plus for DC). DC’s was out for fewer days in its first week than DA (which is a plus for DA). DC’s was released at a time when it required more sales to hit #2 on the Hot 100—he sold a lot more than DA his first week, but it still didn’t get him #1 or #2. How do you compare them, even if you wanted to do so?
My guess is that both Davids and both of their labels were happy with the performance of their first singles, which seems like the most important things to me.
Nice job Archie…. TPTB are high fiving eachother as we type…..
Kudos to Archie on a fantastic debut. I am a Cook fan but have no problem acknowledging that Archie is this season’s success story. Congratulations to him and best of luck in the future.
Congrats to Archie! WOW! He must be over the moon right now. :clap_tb:
It’s not. For all the reasons you mention (that’s why I refered to apples/oranges). For every single, there are asterixes and things that make each case unique. When Cook does come out with a single, things will be different again. It will depend on what other singles are out there. The season. The promo. The duration before his CD releases. The audience he appeals to. Etc.
And the most important thing to the labels (which improves their odds of them being able to make more music for their fans). Both are doing very well.
I think that it is far too early to say that. First of all, because we have not seen what Cook can do. Second of all, because success is measured in many ways. Cook has already accomplished so much.
Today, Archie has had an amazing achievement for any artist. I’m going to congratulate him for that.
IMO, Archie success will be the greatest, sweetest and the most acknowledged success story of this season… Why? Lest we forget, he was all but written off by some AI judges, music critics, MSM and bloggers as not having “mainstream appeal”… something his fans knew all along was ludicrous, and deeply insulting to the intelligence of the average music listener and buyer… we believed in him nonetheless, and knew he was tough and had a resiliency that would overcome these negative and erroneous assessments of his appeal. He’s triumphed with dignity against a whole lotta odds – vocal paralysis, negative media backlash in the run up to the finale et al… Speaks to an inner strength, a grit and determination that drives him to be the best he can be… back that up with THE VOICE, and you have a winner – not solely in the context of a singing competition, but for life…
Okay, you numbers nuts, here are more stats from Radio & Records:

By the way, Magic Rainbows had a nice uptick in Top 40 airplay last week, too:
29 32 DAVID COOK THE TIME OF MY LIFE 1669 115 8.15
Which is interesting because TOML’s strength and longevity has seemingly been more on Hot AC than Top 40. Go Cookie!
I was riding in my friend’s car earlier and, as always happens every single time I start humming, heh, as I did then, my friend turned on the car stereo…of course, Archie’s song was on. It was at a “mellow” station. I understand “Crush” is also topping the charts of several local stations right now.
I’m not crazy about this particular Archie song, but I’m glad it’s doing so well.
I heard “Crush” on my local “Top 40″ station yesterday, and I was so thrilled for David that his single is a hit with his age group … right on the money, David … congrats!!
Wow! I’m so happy for David.
