David Archuleta – Self-Titled Album Drops Today!

David Archuleta’s debut album drops today!   And I have to say, David’s first effort is a solid pop album.   Post-Idol records are put together quickly, with the usual roster of professional songwriters, so they can’t help but sound at least a bit generic. David’s debut is no exception, but the producers did a good job of putting together a pleasing record that contains a little bit of everything–tween pop, ballads, a little rock–that should keep his fans happy, and win a few new ones along the way.

My favorites: The single “Crush” is an effervescent and melodic bit of pop that’s simultaneously teen-pleasing and an adult’s perfect guilty pleasure.   Co-written by David and JC Chasez, “Don’t Let Go” has a distinct adult alternative vibe–I hear David’s future in this song–it’s going straight on to my iPod.   “Running” has a hooky, sweet chorus that keeps the song stuck in my head. “To Be With You” is a pretty ballad, made prettier with Kara DioGuardi’s lovely vocal counterpoint.

Not liking it so much:Â   “Your Eyes Don’t Lie”– I’m not buying David performing this slinky, sexy arrangement.

One last thing.   I said during the competition that I didn’t think David could cut it on pop radio.   I’ll admit it.   I was wrong.   Happy now? Hee.

^^^ Dang, couldn’t they just make a physical CD let’s say Ultra Deluxe edition with all 17 songs? I would buy it now in a blink of an eye without looking at price.

  • frogcooke:

OMG they FINALLY updated his myspace!!!!

  • mj:

“Works for Me” is a very good song. It doesn’t quite fit with the vibe of the album, but neither does YEDL really. I agree with Jeff, that would have been a perfect trade.

The good thing is that Archie’s future looks bright. The best songs “Works for Me” and “Don’t Let Go” are co-written by David. “Falling” is a solid effort too. It’s easy to imagine how David might progress in the future.

  • Michelle:

Late to the party but CONGRATS to “little brother” Archie on his big debut!!! I saw him do Crush on the Today show and was really proud. This Cook fan wishes Archie all the success in the world :) Davids ftw!

  • cruzceleste:

    ^awwwwww Michelle… (hugs)… good luck for Big D too!!!!

  • MJack:

Have you guys checked full version of Waiting For Yesterday? It’s on youtube. After 30 seconds snippet, I must admit, it was my least favourite song on the album. Now, if anoyone still thinks the same just give it a try and you’ll change your mind, I promise. :) I decision was mine Waiting For Yesterday, Works for Me and Falling would end up on regular version of the album.

  • I’m late to the party, too; just wanted to check in and say GO DAVID!!! So excited for him! Trying to imagine what he and his family must be feeling today – just awesome. Well done and well deserved.

Can’t wait to do it all over again a week from today!
    Dx2 FTW!!

  • Skylark:

    Archulove is in the air!!!

I am blown away by this album.
    Congratulations to David and everyone
who contributed. I think he will have plenty
of time for his next CD with the many potential
    hits here.

  • Caffiend, I hear you! I wasnt into David A at all and have just come around lately. I never said anything mean (I dont think I did?) I just wasnt interested and now I am and am glad that I opened my mind and my ears to the little guy. I just hope that you one day will come around to enjoy Jason as much as I, I first of all, hope that Jason brings what I know he has in him to us soon and does it well.

Rolling Stone gives “David Archuleta” the same short 2 1/2 star review it gives to most Idol debuts. (Except Daughtry, he got 2 stars and they called him a cheeseball!)

  • LK08:

^^^^Really? Daughtry a cheese ball? I guess he wasn’t hard enough rock for them??

  • abbysee:

Caffeind I remember looking forward to what you had to say. I remember feeling like you and I were (and a few others) voices crying out in the wilderness. It was hard being a fan of Archie during that time. Today is such a great day because I am able to share this with so many who finally see his potential. I am just stoked by what the future holds.

  • LK08:

Has anyone heard “Let Me Go”? I really like it.

  • Tatiana:

At least the Rolling Stone review is fairly respectful in tone, which is more than I can say for many of these critics. Thanks RS

  • Tatiana:

LK08 – Let Me Go is fantastic! Listen to the lyrics – I think he is singing about 19/AI

  • hypertwink:

I bought my CD today. It’s a good set of songs, although I really really really hate the clapping, the whistling, the whatever-the-fuck they added to the songs. I think that without that, Barriers (and Running) are probably the best in the lot — add in Crush too. It’s a very pleasant CD to drive to…and that’s a major compliment since I hate driving/traffic, and I get cranky.
