David Archuleta Sings Backstage “Hope For Haiti” Telethon, Fans Raise Money – VIDEO

David Archuleta sings backstage at the Hope For Haiti Telethon, (he was answering phones during the telecast) and the fans pony up. Jim Cantiello of MTV News tells the story:
MTV News correspondent Sway chatted with several of the participants of the telethon Friday night, including Archuleta (or as I call him, Archupuppy or Archadorable — depending on my mood). Sway noticed that David was humming to himself before their interview began, so when it came time to roll tape, he asked the “Idol” star if he wanted to share a song with the world.
This should come as no surprise to Archie’s fans, but David happily obliged and treated MTV News to an impromptu (and heart-stoppingly gorgeous) rendition of Kurt Bestor’s “Prayer of the Children.”
Video after the JUMP…
I casually tweeted that we had witnessed a spur-of-the-moment mini-concert from Archuleta, and within seconds my Twitter was inundated with pleas from David diehards desperate to see the video footage that I had just bragged about. What started as half-joking bribes of cupcakes snowballed into a virtual cupcake drive. To donate to the Haiti relief effort, send a TwitPic of a cupcake to @jambajim! (You can see this ingenious idea develop by checking out the timeline on Peace Love Cupcakes.)
By Tuesday afternoon, a generous group of fans had raised $3,850 in mine and David Archuleta’s names! As David would say, “Oh my gosh, Ashley!!”
Impressive. Both David’s singing and the efforts by his fans to raise money for Haiti!

Awesome job to both david and fans
Thank You Mj for posting this! We had a fun weekend with the fund raising. Most of us changed our avi’s on twitter to cupcakes. Even Jim changed his to a cupcake.
I love that David doesn’t need any music when he sings. His voice is so pure!
Thanks @jambajim for getting this up for us.
i agree frogcooke – wonderful song, sung with great feeling and conviction by david… fit the occasion perfectly… and also a great effort by the fans to come up w/a creative way to help aid the haitian relief effort… jambajim also commented on the mtv site…
oh just noticed jims comment on the article heh:
So glad you guys are enjoying the vid. It’s a pretty amazing rendition, no? Especially since it was an impromptu thing. He didn’t even warm up his voice!! Sway, who isn’t a particularly big “Idol” fan, came over to me on Monday and said, “Dang, that Archuleta guy can SING!”
Thanks again for raising money and donating your time, Archie fans! Apologies again for the delay in getting the video up on our site. **HUGS**
Beautiful. Well done David.
I think you said it best Jim, “heart-stoppingly gorgeous”. Great fun
from the twit-cake drive and lots of money for Haiti.

Amazing! Corny as this sounds, his voice truly is a gift, and it’s heartwarming to see him use for such a good cause. Wow.
Wow! So heartfelt and sincere. You can feel the concern that David has especially for the children. To think that this was impromptu and accapella is mind blowing. I hope someone can twitter this to Kurt Bestor. I’m sure this would please him. I don;t have twitter but know he does. …and thanks to Jim for sharing the news with us and the fans for adding to the donations in his honor. Pass it forward is alive and well with David,Jim and his Angels… and the innocent producer. ha! ha!
David’s soooooooooooo amazing!!!!!! <3333333333
Because a lot of us started craving cupcakes after seeing page after page of cupcake avi’s on our twitter. It was evil. We had to….um…indulge a bit. They looked so good! lol
Heidijoy – Kurt has already seen it. He twitted his thanks to David and posted the link to Jim’s article.
Chills. What talent and a big heart. I’ve always thought he was a beautiful person and he has grown into a great role model.

Loved participating in the little cupcake fundraiser. Love hearing and seeing the video of David singing a song that fits the situation well.
woot!just donated thru peace, love and cupcakes fundraiser in honor of david archuleta and jim c……too bad, i can’t eat cupcakes cuz i’m diabetic…lol (just kidding…eccck, what a lame joke, i know) .
on a serious note…my prayers go with the people of haiti….!
p.s. i love you david!!!
Just donated… beautiful song and impressive singing by David
When Archie, that ‘little walking music box’, is NOT humming to himself? LOVE him to pieces! Unfortunately, he didn´t have enough ‘Star Quality’ to deserve a spot on the Live Show… although people like Steven Spielberg, Jack Nicholson, Mel Gibson, Meg Ryan, Ellen DeGeneres etc were also there just answering phones like Archie was, I still consider a waste of talent Archie using his VOICE to answer phones…he should had sing, inspiring people and touching hearts like he does on this heartfelt and moving rendition of ‘Prayer of the Children’!
And the lyrics… really moving, totally heartaching and appropriate for the occasion! “Jesus, help me, to see the morning light/ one more day/ but if I should die before I wake/ I pray my soul to take…”
the giving for haiti continues… what a fantastic young man.
Archuleta, Hough helping Haiti
Utahns David Archuleta and Julianne Hough have joined the effort to fund an MD-80 aircraft to leave Long Beach Wednesday morning bound for Port-Au-Prince, ready to provide over 10,000 pounds of medical supplies (donated by MedShare), doctors, and medical staff.
Scott Stapp and the members of Creed, New Kids On The Block, Alter Bridge, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, Godsmack, Eve and the two Utahns headed the initial wave of musicians helping the cause, with more joining by the moment. Together, they’ve helped the staff of DC3 Music Group raise over $1 million in supplies and donations.
The PLANE TO HAITI effort will continue with as many return trips as needed. The Wheelchair Foundation is accepting donations through the mission’s new website :

No donation is too big or too small.

Glad he’s doing something here. Nice work. As far as the song goes, I’m not particulary fond of it. I also don’t understand why he sounds like he’s singing with an Eastern European accent or something. “Children.” Strange. I also understand the song comes from Utah. Not surprised. David seems to rely on the folks of Utah for much of his music, production, arranging, etc. And that’s fine for now, but he needs to broaden his horizons if he’s intent on making it for the long haul. Of course, therein lies the rub. Maybe he wants to be a regional act in 5-10 years.
The latest donation figure for “Cupcakes for Jambajim” aka “Peace. Love. Cupcakes” is $4230.

Hmm…carolinacharms – the utah connection was mostly for some of the Christmas songs on his second cd with the rest of those songs produced and arranged by EMAN. As far as his first “David Archuleta” cd, I don’t think any of those were arranged or produced by Utah people. Since he is currently writing with many people in Nashville and LA, I don’t think the “regional act” will be an issue for him, not to mention the Latino connection (hence the “Contigo en la Distancia” at the ALMA awards. I was happy to hear Prayer of the Children, but my favorite is “Save the Day”.
David is working with a wide variety of artists from all over the place for his next album. He is in LA right now working with Nasri and Adam Messinger who are Canadians. There have been recent tweets from other artists saying that they are working on his record, such as David Hodges (originally from Arkansas), Eman Kiriakou (Pennsylvanian based in LA), Claude Kelly (from New York City). Victoria Horn (a Brit based in LA) tweeted that she’ll be working with David next week. Last November, he was in Nashville working with Matt Squire (from Washington DC), Joy Williams (from Santa Cruz, CA), Nate Yetton (from Nashville), Matt Wertz (from Missouri), Mat Kearney (from Oregon), and Robert Marvin (Nashville). He also went to New York City to work with Jeymes Samuel.
Not getting a Eastern European accent on the “Children” part either. He’s a Latino with a Utah accent. Go figure.
It’s not a song he’s ever recorded, nor does he intend to, as far as we know. Maybe someday. It’s just a song he likes to sing when the occasion warrants. Don’t think it’s part of his long-term career plans. lol
Ozarka – LOL at your geography lesson. You forgot Daniel Bedingfield (New Zealand born based in LA) and Kina Grannis (Californian based in LA).
Oh, thanks for the additions, JRB. I knew I was forgetting somebody.
Beautiful and touching. It is always a pleasure to hear him sing.
Eman tweeted that he’ll be working with David and Andre Merritt today in LA. Andre wrote “Forever” for Chris Brown and “Disturbia” for Rihanna.
EmanuelKiriakou: Ok time to go home….@davidarchie and @andre_merritt in the afternoon..
THANK YOU Ozarka!! Some serious “fact-filled info” (if that makes any sense) LOL.
What a heartfelt performance by David, he’s so humble and giving. And “high fives” to all the Arch Angels who donated to this worthy cause
I’m looking forward to hearing the next CD, some of the peeps he’s been writing with, have been tweeting about how gobsmacked they are by David Ekkk CD
David truly sings from his heart, such a beautiful performance of “Prayer of the Children” on behalf of the children of Haiti. We couldn’t be more proud of David, he’s the best! As always David’s a true inspiration to all of his fans to do what we can to help those in need, especially now the people of Haiti.
David, thank you for being who you are. This world needs more people like you who get in to help where ever there’s a need AND you are so accepting of others! This song was very beautiful and appropriate for the situation. I love you the just way you are – with various ethnic accents, and cultural diversities!!!
Yes we must give to Haiti.
I read in my local paper some very sad things about the children of Haiti.
One child was injured on her hand and she did not get treatment and because of that she got gangrene in her hand. The doctors determined that they had to remove the child’s hand, so they operated. The worst thing was that they did not have any thing for pain or to put the child to sleep. The story went on to say that the doctors thought as they amputated the child’s hand that she was singing the whole time. They later found out that the child was not singing but praying as they removed the child’s hand.
So I hope we all are hearing “The Prayers of The Children.”
God bless David Archuleta for singing his song for the children of Haiti.
OMG. That was beautiful. Many pop “stars” sound awful “singing” a cappella, but not archpuppy. I wish he would take Andrew Lloyd Webber’s advice. Open your eyes. …Open your eyes…
Noooooo! Keep the eyes closed….keep the eyes closed. lol
I will never in a million, billion, trillion years forgive ALW for that travesty.
useless – When David closes his eyes when he is singing, he is feeling the song, and the fans are connecting with him. People usually close their eyes when they are praying, and it is very appropriate for him to close his eyes during performances such as “Prayer for the Children”. He doesn’t always close his eyes, just when the song he is singing is heartfelt. Anyone who has seen David in concert knows that he makes a lot of eye contact.
