David Archuleta Sings “Crazy” and “Heaven” on Studio 5 - VIDEO

David Archuleta appeared on the local Salt Lake City program Studio 5 today. You can check out his performances of “Crazy” and “Heaven” after the Jump…

I haven’t changed my mind on “Crazy” since yesterday, by the way. This slowed-up version of “Crazy”, without the edgy overtones, isn’t my cuppa tea. His performance of “Heaven”, however, is a lovely thing.

Bonus: Interview with Studio 5 HERE.

Watch and listen, after the Jump…

This is such a cool version of “Crazy.” ppl say there’s no emotion to it but i feel the exact opposite. It has such a deep and sad feel to it compared to the original and i didn’t even pay attention to the lyrics before now. I have it on like repeat on ipod.

    Crazy
    Heaven

New member :thumbup_tb:, I agree this is a Really good version. I don’t understand why people feel he is to young to show the emotion in this song. Jason is only a few years older, what makes him more emotionally fit to sing it.

His take on “Heaven” is beautiful. It made me tear up. I wasn’t expecting for it to be amazing like that!

I also agree crzyshrk, he’s got great emotion when he sings the song. It is hard to sing and play the piano at the same time. So he does very well for someone who hasn’t rehearsed it in a while.

Sabby he’s also sick with allergies… poor guy. Yeah he was sayingin his interview he really hasnt done them except for yesterday… but he didnt even do heaven yesterday.. lol

David Archuleta - STAY. OFF. THE. ROLAND. - I think “Crazy” would have sounded better even with no accompaniment rather than with that keyboard. The guy that played the keyboard on “Heaven” maybe could have played for him during “Crazy” - that would have helped a lot.

  7. 7 frogcooke Jul 15th, 2008 at 9:26 pm

I like the parts in the middle when he wasnt playing along, doing a few of the runs. If anyone could do it acapella he could. But ya know its just a basic tv performance with no frills, probably had to bring their own keyboard lol

    ITA, Sabby & frogcooke..
It’s amazing how well he does these songs even without rehearsals… what can’t David do? I loved Heaven!

Purple - Thanks for sharing the mp3’s!

David continues to grow on me. I love to listen to his voice. He doesn’t make ME feel the music like Taylor, Cookie and Jason, but I like songs and singers for different reasons - and his voice is pure and beautiful - I loved Angels and I love these songs too.

  11. 11 Duke Jul 15th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

thanks soo much for these videos.
i think he’s my favorite idol since kelly. the kid just makes me happy.

  12. 12 ealbino Jul 15th, 2008 at 10:18 pm

Why does my heart skip a beat when he sings? Why do I have to smile everytime I see him smile? Why do I feel so happy when I hear him? Why does he move me to tears at times like in last nite’s Utah performance?

Must be that dreaded ODD :cool2_tb:

  13. 13 MOMster Jul 15th, 2008 at 10:33 pm

wow - I already loved the song “Crazy” but this version really touched me.

  14. 14 sumidol Jul 15th, 2008 at 11:22 pm

I am NOT a David hater - I am a David liker but he took this grungy, kinda off the wall, edgy song Crazy and turned it into a pretty little ballad, but thats what he does and he sings ballads well. Not all songs should be sung the same way and he has a tendency to that. I liked Heaven though - he has a lovely soothing voice and is SUCH a sweetheart it seems. My Dallas LOVES Archuletta so I have heard and seen all that he can find on him, a song he did that really touched me was Ave Maria, he sang it at a church function I believe, Dallas found that on youtube, it was really nice.

While I really loved Crazy, not going to go over what I said yesterday……Heaven is just another thing altogether. I think that is when I knew I was going to be voting for him like a fiend. That song is just a thing of beauty. You wouldn’t know that he’s never been in love hearing him sing that song. I was breathless watching it today.

  16. 16 frogcooke Jul 16th, 2008 at 12:51 am

sumi… i havent heard that…. you dont perchance have a link? I know he sang some arias when he was younger.. I know he does Be Still My Soul at a fireside chat for troubled teens.

  17. 17 sumidol Jul 16th, 2008 at 12:57 am

I will look for it and post it if I can find it. It was really sweet - Dallas is not here or he would go right to it

This is one that Dallas showed me also - that was very touching except for the knuckleheads talking while he is singing

  18. 18 frogcooke Jul 16th, 2008 at 1:09 am

Oh I LOVE his O Holy Night. Really great song.
Richard(the one playing the piano) said there is a counter melody(carol of the bells) used in that arrangement of the song. I really like what he does with this song.

  19. 19 Mackie Jul 16th, 2008 at 8:13 am

I love Archie’s voice..but sometimes I wish he stop oversinging his songs.. I think if he sang Crazy straight up, it would be perfect! Still love him though~

  20. 20 Duke Jul 16th, 2008 at 10:49 am

The thing is, i really appreciate all the runs and big notes (what some call over singing) because i know how hard that is and very few people can do that. And to me, it makes the song that much better.

MJ, you are cracking me up with your critiques lately. Lovely thing was so fresh and cute. LOL My personal fave though was shiteous. You could give Simon a run for his money.

Randy: “Aw it just didn’t work for me dawg.”
Paula: ” First off, you look so beautiful tonight…”
MJ: ” That was just…. *dramatic pause* Shiteous!”

Topic.. I just read that Lil D overslept and just barely made it to the studio that day. He didn’t even get a dry run. You would think some fan would give him an alarm clock instead of all those nutter butters.

  22. 22 kerfuffle Jul 16th, 2008 at 1:20 pm

I guess Archie will be singing “Crazy” everywhere he goes now, at least for the foreseeable future. So it’s not just the one time, after all. And that’s all I’m going to say about that. :sealed_tb:

His voice sounded good when I listened to the first version. I haven’t heard this one.

Yeah that’s true..the ppl who worked there said that..they were trying to stall and all of sudden out pops David who seemed like he was just out of bed lol

  24. 24 3babies Jul 16th, 2008 at 2:18 pm

I absolutely loved Crazy the way David did it. I loved it the first time he sang it and I haven’t changed my mind…..I still love it!!!!! David’s voice is so beautiful and the runs are fantastic. I have it downloaded and have listened to it on and off all day. I can’t understand how anyone could listen to this and not love it…oh well…their loss….loved Heaven the first time I heard him do it. He blew the judges away and had the back up singer crying over there and I loved it when he did it at the studio…..breathtaking…

  25. 25 ianamy Jul 16th, 2008 at 2:40 pm

I have been playing heaven and two versions of crazy nonstop. Such a treat, for ears and for heart. David really connects to his songs and make the listener connecting to them.

  26. 26 frogcooke Jul 16th, 2008 at 4:53 pm

yeah heres the story about rolling out of bed:

Someone posted this story about that studio appearance on notingdavid.org, a little backstage story, and could explain how tired David looked.

“After reading on many fansites of people’s concerns on David’s health and the rigors of such a long concert tour, I decided to share this story. I work in the same building as Studio-5 and took the opportunity to go see David perform on the show. It was 10:35 and I headed in back to see if I could get a sneak peak of David before the show. I saw the producers and hosts getting ready, when someone came running up and stating that David wasn’t here yet, and that in fact both David and Jeff were still asleep when the show had finally gotten ahold of them. So while everyone was setting up plan b, which was pretty much start in the big studio with the crowd for a teaser then move segment 2 and put David on when he got there. So, at 10:59am I’m in the big studio with everyone else when Brooke, the host, starts introducing the show and working the audience up into a frenzy, when lo and behold out runs David!. I was shocked. Seeing him, I definitly could tell that he must of just rolled out of bed. But he was pumped and excited and it was fun watching the show. So poor David had no warm-ups or rehersal time before the show. I got a chance to talk to Jeff Archuleta during commercial break and he claimed that somehow he didn’t hear his cell phone and it wasn’t until the station called into the room directly that he woke up. He laughingly claimed he thought it was only 7 or 8 and was shocked to find out what time it really was! Again I am shocked that they made it to the studio in time! I wonder if they had a police escort. lol.”

Um, I’m not a fan of this boy, but I actually really liked his version of Crazy. Not saying it’s better than Jason, but it’s pretty good. If he had done this on the show, he might have convinced me that he deserved to win. The boy needs some edgier lyrics.

  28. 28 sumidol Jul 17th, 2008 at 12:10 am

“The boy needs some edgier lyrics.”

That is the point was trying to make earlier - with Crazy he DID have edgier lyrics but turned it right back into another ballad. He made it nice and sweet and pretty and that is not what that song is about.

  29. 29 Mackie Jul 17th, 2008 at 5:16 am

i hope his new song ‘crush’ is edgy.

  30. 30 augiedog Jul 17th, 2008 at 9:57 am

I think the folks that don’t connect with DAs’ singing style are folks that equate a raw sound with emotion. His beautiful sound and pure voice for some reason turn you off. It is hard for me to imagine this. I love the way he sings and the emotion he puts into his music is beautiful and pure, not raw and edgy. Even if he sings an edgy song, it will sound beautiful, because he has a pure and almost always in tune voice, not a raw, raspy and often out of tune voice.

  31. 31 sumidol Jul 17th, 2008 at 6:08 pm

Well I cannot speak for anyone else and I sure do appreciate a beautiful pure voice. I dont think a voice has to be raspy to show emotion, just sung with emotion period. I personally like variety in music and at this young age David A seems to sing all songs in the same (beautiful) way no matter what the material. Edgy means something is bold, provocative or unconventional not raspy or raw or out of tune.

  32. 32 gerreb Jul 17th, 2008 at 8:17 pm

i liked both of these songs! I think I actually prefer “heaven” over “crazy” though…i just love hearing him sing…..he can sing to me anyday!
