David Archuleta – World Premiere – Crush – Z100

David Archuleta’s single “Crush” premiere’s on New York’s Z100 at 7:45 this morning. You can listen live at the station’s website.
Apparently, finishing touches were still being put on the song as late as last night. David will be listening to the song for the first time on the radio with everyone else…
Could the woman on this show be any more condescending. She’s about to pinch his cheeks!
The song itself? Pretty much what I expect from Jive. The song is produced for maximum hit potential. The vocals are overprocessed, but what isn’t these days? Jive did a terrific job getting Jordin Sparks to the top of the charts this past year, I expect no less for Archie.

August 11/12 is the official radio release date. Sept 2 is the date the song will be released for commercial sale to iTunes.
It is a lovely song for me, especially when it is sung by DA. Love it!!
While “Crush” doesn’t showcase Archie’s vocals, neither did Kelly Clarkson’s big hit “Since U Been Gone”. That song catapulted her popularity into the into the pop stratosphere, so who’s to argue?
Anyway, I loved that song, and didn’t really care that it didn’t showcase her vocals. She’s managed to do that on other tunes, and when you see her live, you get what a great singer she is.
It’s very important for Archie as a newly minted Idol, to have a hit song out of the gate, and this tune, a total earworm, is totally going to do it for him.
I still love Since U Been Gone! I just gave DA’s song the tweener test at my house – it scored – big.
I thought it was awful the first time I listened, but liked it a lot better the second time. Anyway, it doesn’t matter what I think, because I’m not the audience for it. I want DA to have a long and happy singing life, so I’m rooting for it to be wildly popular, because I want to get the chance to hear what he can do when he’s older.
It will be great for AI if the show gets TWO huge sellers out of this season, so I have my fingers crossed for both of the Davids. I look forward to the new talent that their dual success will attract to try-outs.
It’s pretty amazing even now to look at certain charts–such as AC or HOT AC and frequently see Idol alums taking THREE of the top 10 spots. (Cook, Daughtry, Sparks.) Very impressive from the standpoint of showing what DC always says the show is–a platform for launching a singer onto bigger things.
Edited because, for one thing, conjunctions are my friend.
This reminds me of something. Shamefully, in a fit of boredom, I once watched the Christina Aquilara E True Hollywood Story or some such nonsense. She told the story of how she fought with her record company because they wanted to release Genie in a Bottle first, but she wanted to release one of her other songs that showcased her serious pipes.
Of course, she knew she had no say in the matter, and she was pretty pissed at the time. They explained to her that Genie would get her a ton of radio play, then once everyone knew her name, they’d release the next one. After that, people would realize what a voice she had and at that point, she’d be a star. In the end, it worked, and obviously she realized she had been wrong.
Same concept here. Archie’s always going to have that voice. And, I have no doubt that there will be more than one song on his cd that shows the world what he can do vocally. But first, he’s got to concquer radio.
So, I wouldn’t fret Archie fans. He’ll give you what you’re waiting for – after he’s hooked some more fans who don’t watch idol.
I am hoping that after he established himself as an artist, his next album would be something like John Mayer or Jason Mraz or Justin Nozuka, he has that type of voice to pull off that kind of genre~ Let him enjoy all these teeny pop songs for now and after he mature for few years, he should do more serious music like the musicians I just mentioned..
I was surprised, I finally decided to listen to this song. I liked it, it is not amazing or wow but very radio friendly and I will bet it does well.
David has said on multiple occasions that his album will be a mix a radio-friendly songs and songs that are more ‘mature’ by which he means what we have been talking about – something that showcases his vocals. So I’m quite excited. Crush is definitely the ‘radio-friendly’ song and it’s not half bad, nor does it ignore his vocals – Listen to the bridge and last chorus and you’ll hear the voice we love.
It will also, and by all accounts, already has – bring in a ton of new fans.
SpenserJ, thanks for the info on Christina A – this shows that Archie and those around him interested in his career are making exactly the right moves.
Lu – I did the tween test too and it did well at my house, well, One of my kids thinks he can do no wrong so with that child it was a given but the others actually sat thru it and liked it too.
I love Genie in a Bottle! but those were the days when they still put out better songs.
David has a new blog….
MY DEBUT SINGLE “CRUSH” PREMIERED ON Z100!
Mj, that’s awesome! It is a damn earworm. As I was trying to sleep last night, I kept hearing the damn refrain in my ear. Not good music to sleep by. But this is exactly what he needs. Single two will the the ballad to make all the older gals cry. That’s my take on it. LOL
i don’t think it sounds like David.
I love the song! I’ve had it playing pretty much continually since it came out. At first listen I liked it, but it has REALLY grown on me the more I’ve played it.
They may have processed the song too much for some but if you listen, you can really find David in the song. He really has his own style. I love his opening riff, the beat, melody and lyrics are great, and he puts some sweet emotion in the song.
Great first single for David. I think he’ll do fantastic with it. I’m an older fan and I love it, so I think all told it’ll be a HIT for him!
Hi I’m new here
I’m 19 years old and just wanted to comment on the following:
Everyone is comparing the single “Tattoo” from Sparks and Archuleta’s single “Crush”,
Although people are giving Archuelta’s song a more positive review, what people must
put in mind is that Jordin Sparks was the winner of the 2006 AI season, and well, as you know,
Archuelta was not. That said, comparing Archuleta’s single with Sparks’ is somehow well, unfair? Not because David is not a great talent, he is! I love his new single (I must have listened to it for about 20 times yesterday). However comparing his single with Sparks’ gives the idea that he won this season. What are people going to compare Cook’s single when it comes out? (Not “Time of My Life”) It is from him that should be expected more, didn’t he win?
But once again, it is amazing that people are rooting for David’s song because it means he has a huge fan base that will grow with this single song.
What are you talking about, lujan? Comparing Jordin’s song and Archie’s song has nothing whatsoever to do with who won and lost AI. The comparison is inevitable because they’re both on the same label, being pimped to the same demographic in the same genre of music, and essentially have the same machinery behind them. Cook is on another label, shooting for a completely differerent genre of music (although they do overlap somewhat on demographics), and has an entirely different team working on his career.
Anyway, AI is over. Forget “reality” TV. They’re in the bigger pool of the entire music industry now. They’d better get used to being compared to whoever is hot and selling out there, not just AI alumni. Now THAT’S reality.
What? Archie is not the winner? SHOCKER! lol
I think Crush is more similar to “no air” than “tattoo,” and similar to a few Kelly’s pop rock songs.

Blake Lewis, last year’s runner up released his first single Break Anotha and many of his fans were very disappointed. It was a huge flop. People liked what he did (more or less) during the competiton and then his single came out and it was a disaster. Sure he didn’t have the vocals, but his fans liked what he did during the competiton. Lewis didn’t recover from that first single.
People loved what Archie did during the competiton a 17-year old singing mostly mature ballads which showcased his fantastic voice. So now he is being marketed towards the tween-type pop that is definitely geared towards the “Jonas Brothers/Miley Cyrus” crowd.” There’s the problem–there are plenty of those types of artists. The Jonas Brothers don’t have the vocals Archie does but they look “cool” and “hip” to their fans, playing instruments and looking a certain way. Archie doesn’t have that “look.” That’s a problem. Jordin’s “Tattoo” didn’t make the impact they expected but her duo with Chris Brown “No Air” was more successful but I credit that more to Chris Brown. She also doesn’t have the “look.” Her stuff is too sugary for my taste.
Archie had both tweens and mom type fans. The tweens liked him because he was 17 and the moms liked him because of his mature voice. His switching his style may pose a problem for him.
“Tattoo” was a platinum-selling Top 10 hit. I can’t imagine that her record label was disappointed with that. “No Air” was more successful, but “Tattoo” was no slouch, either.
Jive knows how to produce hit singles. What’s interesting about them is that they appear to see a single through, even if it gets a slow start. “Tattoo’s” climb up the charts was very slow, but steady. But still, the appearances and promotion kept coming. Also, sending Jordin out on the road with more established acts has been genius. Her album is dropping on the Billboard 200, but watch it start climbing again when she hits the road with Jesse McCartney. Her single “One Step at a Time” continues to slowly climb the charts.
The success of Jordin’s career bodes well for Archie, who begins his career with more buzz and a bigger fan base than Jordin had.
It took sometime for Tattoo to have an impact. I remember reading a statement that management thought Jordin Sparks would really take off, but it was slow going as compared to previous idols who came out of the competition and reached platinum status almost immeidately. Jordin was the winner of American Idol that season and they wanted her to succeed because it was a reflection on them and their statement “It really matters to win.” She had their full backing. “No Air” was definitely a better song than Tattoo and once people liked that–they went back and re-listened to Tattoo.
Having listened to “Crush” I feel that it did not showcase Archie’s vocals which is what everyone raved about during the season. Sure his fans will love it and that all that counts but it came off as being very generic as pop goes. I think anyone could have been singing that song.
I actually hear more Chris Brown in “Crush” than Jonas Brothers/Miley Cyrus. Certainly the lyrics aren’t as sexualized as Chris Brown can get, but there’s more of an R&B edge to “Crush.” And let’s not forget, David isn’t likely to have his own TV show or movie anytime soon. The JoBros and Miley have set themselves up to be marketed as super-products, rather than musicians (and it’s worked well for them in certain ways). If they both simply stuck to music, however, they would be perceived in a different way. IMO, David is far more talented, and if he can establish himself as a musician beyond AI (and I think he can), he won’t be a super-product. Hence, his music won’t be as marginalized as the music of the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus.
There’s no doubt that David is being marketed to teens, but I don’t think Jive is throwing away his older audience either. “Crush” fits right into Top 40 and Hot AC, where the market spans a wide age-range. To say that older fans wouldn’t like the song is like saying older fans (in their 20s to 40s) wouldn’t like much of anything playing on the radio today. And those teens that he is being marketed to aren’t so single-minded as to only like one type of singer or band. They may like the tight pants of the JoBros and their “cool” look, but they will also go for David’s more homegrown image if given the opportunity. If the reaction he gets at concerts is any indication of what type of impact he can make on a larger scale, the teen audience will eat him up–even without his own TV show or movie. And his older fans will be right there, satisfied that they’re following somebody who has already proven to be a really great musician.
This probably sounds shallow, but I think Crush just is what it is. It’s a nice little pop tune, appropriate for his age, and in the style he said he wanted to do. It’s radio friendly and will probably accomplish the goal of getting lots of airplay and will help drive his album sales (or not). In the end, it’s just another song by another artist put out there and will succeed or be perceived as failing based on a multitude of variables, and the variables are key. As I’ve said before, I enjoy watching the careers of quite a few of the idols, which is one reason I love MJ’s Big Blog so much. Running with the “big dogs” in the music business is a huge, scary, and sometimes nasty business to navigate, and I’m sure all the idols go out there and do the very best they can.
First off, I want to make it clear that I’ve never been a huge David Archuleta fan, but I have enjoyed some of his music. I agree that this song doesn’t show off his vocals the way it could, but I also agree that Jive must be trying to target David’s age group. I mean, did you expect him to be Josh Groban? He’s great and all, and I know he probably could pull that off, but this song is much more suited to what I actually want to hear a 17 year old sing…it’s clean enough to let young ones listen to, and whether you want to admit it or not, it IS catchy.
While I’d much rather hear a David Cook single, I think “Crush” will be one of my secret favorites…just don’t tell my family.
