Wow. I really under-rated “The World I Know” when I heard him sing it Tuesday night. That is beautiful! Hope he had at least one like this on the album.

  2. 2 mj May 23rd, 2008 at 3:32 pm

The recorded versions actually make the Davids sound about even. I’d give Cookie the edge, because his songs are better.

  3. 3 Michelle May 23rd, 2008 at 3:35 pm

The popularity bar for ToML right now is astounding. It’s almost triple the next bestselling song, which LOL yes, is another David Cook track.

  4. 4 dulce May 23rd, 2008 at 3:51 pm

Cook’s recordings are amazing. When the judges were giving their comments Tuesday, I didn’t hear this one-sided victory that they so claimed Archuleta had. The recordings prove this 100%. The World I Know has got to be one of his best recordings to date, studio and all. The arrangement is gorgeous and I think brings out a whole new level of emotion from the song than the original which is what I think Cook is best at. Even Dream Big is fun. Great songs for him.

I LOVE The World I Know. I had the iTunes version on permanent repeat yesterday. It’s gorgeous. I just can’t think of a better song for him to have ended with. Perfection.

Speaking of…I bought it on iTunes, but I’m one of the few people on the planet who have a non-iPod mp3 player, and I’d love the iTunes version in a format I can listen to on the road. I don’t know if it’s alright to ask (delete if need be, MJ), but does anyone know where I can get an mp3 of the iTunes The World I Know? The only mp3 I can find on various sites is the live broadcast version…

  6. 6 SallyS May 23rd, 2008 at 3:59 pm

you just need to use ap rogram to convert mp4 into mp3. Google. It’s easy to do

  7. 7 Seraphina May 23rd, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Is it that simple? I always assumed it was too involved with the protection & such. lol I’ll have a google for converters, then, thanks Sally. :)

Fred Bronson’ weekly Friday column on Billboard chart action has just posted on the Billboard web site.

    http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/chart_beat/chat.jsp

There’s already speculation on how high on the BB charts Cookie will get. Fred said that without radio airplay, it’s unlikely that the four songs topping the ITunes charts will top the regular singles charts. (Although this Soul Patroller knows that we put Taylor on the top of the Billboard singles charts on sales alone).

Fred is a great friend of American Idol and writes about them all the time in his column. He also appears on Idol about once a year (I think he was on during the first Beatles Week this year).

Ok, I know this is random, but does anyone have the thought that this may be the Fred of S5 on this blog?

    It’s not.

  11. 11 Trina May 23rd, 2008 at 4:46 pm

Michelle - How do you see the popularity bars??

  12. 12 Lisa May 23rd, 2008 at 4:49 pm

MJ I have bought all of DC’s vids & mp4’s over the past months all through your site!

  13. 13 Michelle May 23rd, 2008 at 4:52 pm

Trina - since they’re letting the Davids’ tracks show up in the charts, it should be one of the columns in the “Top Songs” chart (no more Complete My Album trick needed!) If it’s not showing for you try right clicking on the column headers and make sure “Popularity” is checked off.

Seraphina - there’s another method, if you burn a CD from iTunes then the tracks there are like any other CD and you can rip them into mp3 using Windows Media Player. It eats up a CD but sometimes it’s hard to find a converter that doesn’t look like it’ll give you a serious case of viruses ;)

  14. 14 Kirsten May 23rd, 2008 at 4:57 pm

Although this Soul Patroller knows that we put Taylor on the top of the Billboard singles charts on sales alone

Fred is correct (I’m sure he’s pleased I’m agreeing with him. He’s a professional expert getting paid money to write for the company that defines music charts and I’m just somebody who posts comments on somebody else’s blog. LOL).

There are a couple of differences which make it harder Cook to chart than it did for Taylor:

    1) Singles sales have changed. A couple of weeks before Taylor released his single, Shakira had shattered download records (IIRC it was over 200K). Those kinds of numbers are routine for top hits these days. Downloading is immensely popular and so there will be a lot more competition.

    2) Because the singles market has changed, they don’t count for as much. Back in the day (2006), every single sold counted for almost twice as many points as airplay did on the Hot 100. Now, airplay is worth more. I’m probably remembering this wrong (and I don’t have time to look it up), but the formula is something like 50% airplay, 45% sales and 5% streaming.

    3) Cook doesn’t get a full week. Taylor’s single would have been released on a Tuesday and there would likely have been a fair number of pre-orders to make up for the missing Monday. Cook’s didn’t go on sale until Thursday so he’s competing against songs that have almost twice as many days to move their product (and who have MONSTER airplay)

This isn’t a Cook vs. Taylor post, so please don’t anybody turn it into one. I’m not commenting on the relative quality of either single. I’m just pointing out that it is tough to get to the top of the Hot 100 with sales alone these days especially when you only have half a week. It can be done, but it’s tough (there will be much press if he succeeds).

I think it’s quite likely he will have the number 1 download and a bunch of other number 1s from various other charts.

  15. 15 taran33 May 23rd, 2008 at 5:07 pm

I was watching the TV Guide channel and someone had made a comment that Archie sounded amazing Tues. night, but that they had a harder time hearing Cookie there. They said when they went home and watched it on their TV that Cookie sounded better than in the theater. Justin Guirrini(sp?) made the comment that the band was more subtle on Archie’s songs, which makes sense since they were ballads and Cookie’s songs had a lot of instruments which he thought somewhat drowned out his voice.

Also did anyone see it when he asked (please forgive me it’s been a long day) Justin’s cohost, the blonde who was once on idol, out to dinner? That was so sweet. He brought her a flower.

    *edit*
To clear up my rambling, it was Kimberly Caldwell and the show was Idol Tonight.

  16. 16 idolfan86 May 23rd, 2008 at 5:09 pm

Are the iTunes versions different than the ones from the live show? I didn’t think any of them were studio recordings except Time Of My Life. But maybe I’m wrong??

  17. 17 cheese May 23rd, 2008 at 5:14 pm

Idolfan, the iTunes recordings are from the live show, but the sound quality is much better than the mp3s people have made from the tv broadcast.

  18. 18 GwendolynD May 23rd, 2008 at 5:14 pm

    But maybe I’m wrong??

    No. You’re right.

  19. 19 Hisaki May 23rd, 2008 at 5:29 pm

I have had TWIK on repeat since Wednesday and it has been the only thing I’ve listened to in the past three days. It’d have been lovely to have TWIK as his winning single, but he made ToML completely listenable to, after all, so I’m not complaning. :)

  20. 20 grayhound May 23rd, 2008 at 5:32 pm

Just adding this from DC’s iTunes (which I finally listened to today) - since they were from his live performances I was really impressed with how perfectly in tune his voice was in the live performances. It’s something you notice more when you are listening to the downloaded songs. He definitely sounded on key that night, but wow, I really appreciate it much more listening back (now I sound like Simon)……..

  21. 21 onlygirl May 23rd, 2008 at 6:01 pm

Do you think we should all be calling our local radio stations and requesting DC? Are they able to play any of his stuff or just Time of My Life? I’m assuming it’s just that song. If that becomes “popular” will his label assume that’s what the public wants and give him more “magic rainbows” to sing?

I’m just curious what others think…

  22. 22 colette May 23rd, 2008 at 6:01 pm

    TARAN33:

The blonde he gave the flower to was Kimberly Caldwell, an idol contestant from another season (was it 2?).

she’s apparently an AI commentator (and obsessive) now, and calls her fave male contestants her “next boyfriend” or “my soon-to-be husband.” She drooled constantly about David C, and he apparently is not immune to her charms either. He asked her out for dinner (I think this was Red Carpet before the finale), she squealed with delight, and practically tackled him to the ground with her final embrace.

The fangirlies are going to be hatin’on her, I’m sure, but I can’t imagine that a red-blooded American boy like DC would not love to sow some wild oats. And he still probably has NO IDEA of how many women (of every age) will be throwing themselves at him very very sooon…….

not getting any radio play in wilmington, nc yet. =(

can we get a tour post soon so we can all see who is going to which show?

    cookie is love.

No. It’s a bad idea to calll radio stations at random. Thats a sure fire way to piss off the Program Directors of the radio stations and guarantee the jocks will start mocking your favorite, if they haven’t already. Oh, they’ll also start mocking you as fans. In the end, you aren’t helping, but hurting your favorite

Leave the promotion up to the label. It’s their job to promote the single, not yours. You made David Cook the American Idol with your votes. I know it may be hard to wrap your head around this, but you’ll never have that kind of direct impact on his fate ever again. If there’s some legit voting thingy, like VH1 Top 20 videos, or a radio station in your market, that’s already playing the single that has a request line, go for it. But, otherwise, buy his records, go to his concerts. That’s how you support him.

Also, any kind of street teaming or discussion of voting or calling radio stations for your favorite belongs on the contestant’s fan boards. I’ve banned it here. I found the discussion gets out of hand quickly and becomes tedious for those outside of the fan base.

  26. 26 wfowfowfo May 23rd, 2008 at 6:18 pm

I suppose if I’m going to hear him on the radio, I’ll have to turn off the ipod… sheesh — my hubby set my home office up with a great set of speakers and I’ve been rocking out all day.

Someone let me know if they hear anything on a DC station - (Washington DC!), but I kinda doubt we’ll hear it here. 107.3 Jack Diamond liked him — but I can’t see them playing the magic rainbow song. Maybe I’ll send him Creep.

by the way, since I’m far too out of the pop culture loop to know who Jesse McCartney is, I looked him up and listened to some of his music.

    Now I’m gettin’ worried.

If you also didn’t know, he’s a very cute, tween-worshipped teen pop star who co-wrote Leona Lewis’s humungoid hit “Bleeding Love,” which I’m not a great fan of. And the other songs I found on his myspace jukebox seemed like very elementary pop diddies — nothing special or meaningful, just your usual faux-Timberlake twaddle.

Am I being too mean? Or missing something? and am I wrong to be concerned that our fab new Idol might be stuck with the Simon-izing sonic repackaging that results in a hit record — but one I’d listen to just once?

    eeek.

Yeah, I think that part of why Clay has never received much radio love is because of the Claymates and their incessant campaigning. If you want an AI contestant to do well - don’t start harassing dj’s.

I think all of this talk of Cookie having some kind of middle-aged Cougar fan-base is ludicrous. I know plenty of young people, and men who were fans of David Cook. And, the word Cougar itself is just vile. It implies there’s an actual group of women over a certain age (35? 40? 50? what is the cutoff?) whose main pursuit is to try and look 25 and date younger men. While people like that exist, they are few and far between and certainly not typical of older women. And, most definitely that word does not define the women who voted for Cookie. Some of us just dug his music and have absolutely no urge to have imaginary sex with him at all.

I wouldn’t worry too much until we hear what the album will be like. It’s still to soon to assume what direction he’s, meaning DC, going. We’ll just have to wait and see what the outcome will be.

Half Dead Broads for Cookie !

  34. 34 cheese May 23rd, 2008 at 6:55 pm

I’m really not worried if “The Time of My Life” doesn’t get much airplay. These coronation songs usually don’t because they suck and people who didn’t follow the show aren’t going to want to listen to songs about magic rainbows, tasting every moment and rising from the ashes.

Are we thinking that TPTB will eventually release the numbers for iTunes downloads for the season? I’m really curious to see how some of the bigger hits like Bille Jean, Always Be My Baby, Imagine, Hallelujah, etc. did.

  35. 35 wfowfowfo May 23rd, 2008 at 7:08 pm

Those would be great numbers to have, cheese — but do we have anything to compare them too? Like Queen Leona’s numbers?

  36. 36 mj May 23rd, 2008 at 7:13 pm

They played it on the #1 Top 40 station here in Boston this afternoon as well. I almosy crashed my car from shock.

KISS FM? I remember hearing “This is My Not” a few times on there. Heh. I never heard it again after the first week.

However, I will say, the Boston pop radio stations LOVE their Idols. They LOVE Daughtry. Not the rock stations mind you. But KISS and MIX can’t get enough. Jordin, Carrie and Elliot–also popular. Kiss even gave Kat McPhee’s singles some spins. Bo Bice and Blake Lewis–no love for those two at all.

Half Dead Broads for Cookie !

Hilarious that the press has suddenly grabbed on to the notion that all of Cookie’s fans are ready for AARP.

Isn’t that the truth! His fanbase covers all age groups. FWIW, I am 31 soon to be 32-year-old single female that adores Cookie. So no, I don’t fit into that age bracket. Heh!

  38. 38 colette May 23rd, 2008 at 7:33 pm

Here’s a review of The Time of My Life:

    http://blogs.villagevoice.com/statusainthood/archives/2008/05/grading_the_itu_2.php

The good news is that Cook’s elegantly grizzled growl is uniquely suited toward making a mess like this work. He’s shameless enough to treat a nothing like this like it was “Everybody Hurts,” and the way he builds from the gurgley snarls on the intro to a big drawn-out lung-busting note at the end shows that he’s already a pro. . . . That Cook can make anything of this song is a minor miracle, and it bodes well for what might happen if Clive Davis starts throwing actual good songs his way

  41. 41 tinawina May 23rd, 2008 at 8:45 pm

KISS FM? I remember hearing “This is My Not” a few times on there. Heh. I never heard it again after the first week.

Yep! Them. And yes, they do play all things idol on there. But I didn’t expext to hear this so soon!

  42. 42 Allison May 23rd, 2008 at 11:04 pm

I just bought TWIK and it’ s fabulous. Cook’s voice live is so on key.

  43. 43 sherryw May 24th, 2008 at 1:37 am

I would have to agree with the suggestion of not pushing this song. Channeling Randy: It is true that he can sing the phone book and make it sound good. But, do any of Cookie’s fans want him to become synonymous with magic rainbows?
If a radio station in your area is already playing it and you want to request it, I say: Go for it. But save the big guns for when his first “real” single comes out. I can’t wait for that.
I am really hoping that a polished up version of Fall Back Into Me ends up on the album. A little spit and shine and that one is radio ready.

  44. 44 cooktard76 May 24th, 2008 at 11:46 am

sherryw– i highly doubt he will put anything from analog heart on the new album… however, that is also my fave song on there! =)
