No, “what he does” refers to his singing. As I said, Cook’s a very good singer. But, Neal is a GREAT guitarist.

You think Kyle is good? I thought he is the weakest one of the band. His drumming always comes across as manic rather than effective, sometimes it sounds good when a song requires the manic energy, a lot of times it doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t.

It may be a case of mileage, then. But, I’ve seen Kyle singled out for praise in reviews. And my personal take is that his drumming provides an extremely strong backbone for each song.

I agree there’s no NEED for it. I simply did it just to illustrate how talented the ensemble is around him. And I don’t think Cook fans need to threatened by the fact that he has people equally or even more talented around him. It’s possible that some fans of the band may be hooked in by, for instance, the lead guitar work. It certainly happened with Guns and Roses and, obviously, Van Halen.

I don’t know if the other band members are as prolific (maybe Neal? I dunno. It’d be close anyway). In any event, he fronted and managed a band many more years before he joined up with MWK. Then, when his band broke up, he joined up close friends MWK to be rythm guitarist & back-up vocalist, while working on his own solo project. Somehow that move alone earns him a ton of brownie points in my book. Then when in a fit of insanity (I kid, I kid LOL!) he falls into Idol, he makes one of the most intelligent runs in this cheesy contest evah – using a lot of his musical and non-musical ingenuity to ‘break’ this show (it’s all about meshing great vocals with songwriting and songarranging skills now, besides the malepolish. Hee).

But if “what he does” refers to his guitar skills, then I’d agree with you. Since he’s the only one who hasn’t had any formal training though (just picked it up and played it by ear), then I cut him hyoooooge slack in the technical department.

Good way to put things in perspective. No, neither would I. Let’s face it, for 99.9% of the fans, though we like the band, it’s David who is the draw. Love the band, but it’s for David that I go to webpages and watch videos and buy concert tickets and cds … not for anyone else.

This. Seriously, I don’t care how well a person plays the guitar or the drums if what they’re playing isn’t my cup of tea… I’m here because I love David’s music. I’m happy he has a great band around him because they help bring that music to life in the best way possible. JMHO, YMMV and all that good stuff.

And they are very, very lucky that he chose, and maybe fought to surround himself with them. I don’t really *care* who is better than who. More AI comparisons, only with his own band. As good as they are, I wouldn’t follow any of them if DC wasn’t involved (nope, not even Neal, who does absolutely nothing for me). I will always follow David no matter who is playing behind him.

I absolutely love the new cover. He’s re-worked two 80’s songs that I had completely forgotten about, into gritty, rock songs. I hope I hear “Died in Your Arms” next month at my first!!!eleventy!! concert.

Let me put it this way: David Cook is a very good singer, but I don’t think he’s the best in his band at *what he does*. In fact, I’m not even sure he’s second best (Kyle).

The best part is that the more he plays the song with The No Name Band, the more they ‘perfect’ it, y’know: step it down half a note here, step up half a note there, add more Andy backup here, layer with Kyle backup there, rough up the Joey bass line, let Kyle go drum apesh!t there, and turn Neal loose on lead in the bridge, and just watch the crowd go wild. The best versions of the songs are usually the 5th (or 6th or 7th) time he does that song live. By then, he’s got the crowd trained like puppies to sing the chorus here, clap there, scream here. And that arm waving? He’s starting them young! Hee.

Did y’all hear that he’s also training the crowd to say “aaawwww!” and “noooooo!” on cue last night?! I can’t wait to see the Toobies.

I like this cover a lot. I still wish we could hear more of their original stuff instead of the covers though. They do the World I Know and one other cover, as well as MWK covers. I’m glad they are doing Straight Ahead but I want to hear other songs from AH too. I guess I sound demanding. Thanks for the videos, I love these, especially ADAM which is an awesome way to close the show.

Oh, Jolene, thanks for posting that link! I’d forgotten all about that little clip. I knew I wasn’t crazy that that Neal couldn’t possibly be the same guy I’d seen play in MWK in old clips!

I love the harmonies David does with Andy on that song, and it’s interesting to me how David kind of uglified (English majors get to break the rules ’cause we know ‘em!) himself when he was in that band. Andy was clearly the frontman and heart throb of the Midwest Kings, not DC!

BTW, that Tulsa talent contest was eventually won by S7 semifinalist Alaina Whitaker and her sister Brittney. After Idol completed last season, the Whitaker girls and S7’s Kady Malloy formed a trio, I think. Funny how things turn out, no? I always thought that Alaina got the boot too early because people confused her with Kady, who kinda sucked (aside from her Britney Spears imitations). They looked SO much alike.

And I’m very glad that MWK didn’t win Tulsa’s “My Big Break.” Just think how different this world would be without David Cook, American Idol?

I’ve heard that Joey is not married…that the marriage report on Joey was inaccurate. So apparently Kyle is the only married one on stage, unless you want to put Skibbie in the non-single category since his relationship appears to be very stable with his girlfriend. :unsure_tb:

About Neal’s appeal… I don’t think he’s “cute”, but I do think he’s sexy.
I just can’t get over how big of a transformation he went through in a fairly short time. I mean, if David went through a “makeover” in AI7, I don’t know what you’d call the thing Neal went through. Compare how he looks in this video to the way he looks now. It’s insane.
