I loved this interview! It’s nice to see another interview where he gets to talk about his music background and his influences. :)

What a refreshingly different interview - not the same questions at all!

  3. 3 erennick May 31st, 2008 at 1:15 am

That was all sorts of awesome! He was so relaxed and the editing was great! I would love to see more of these playlists for other artists I like/love. Maybe I should watch more Nightline.

    Thanks for posting!

Oh, the many wonderful sides of DCook. Love him so much.

So, I guess this is the end of the media blitz?
No more cookies for us until the tour?

I just have to add how very much I love him in this interview. Not a fan of Garth or NIN (I like how much variety there is to his musical tastes, though), but I love the other songs he mentioned, and I’m glad he got to sing them on Idol. (”One Sweet Day” was a group performance, no?) I think Cook and I were both junior high kids listening to “One Sweet Day” on our Sony Discmans when it spoke to us pretty deeply. (Whether you like their music or not, you can’t deny that Mariah Carey Boyz II Men was one awesome pairing for a song.) I could definitely tell by the way he sang “Innocent” that it really, really meant something important to him. You don’t pick that song if the lyrics aren’t striking to you. And “The World I Know”… that was always a song I kind of dismissed when it was popular, probably because it was overplayed on my local radio stations. But I GOT the song because of Cook, and now I love it.

    Hey Guys…a first timer here!

Great interview. He really is something — a gift. I too appreciate his eclectic taste in music. It’s not at all surprising though; you can tell Cookies has a big, big world…and heart, and soul and talent…

Is the media junket over? Say it isn’t so. I’m gonna go back and view all the interviews again — starting with Leno!

Doesn’t the winner usually perform the national anthem at the NBA Finals?
He hasn’t done The View yet either.

    “Now, a stunning fact…”

Finally- props to DC for OWNING the top 100!

THIS is the interview I’ve been waiting for-one in which he talks solely about music and music influences.

He looked sooooo relaxed talking about the thing he loves: Music!

He really is a gorgeous sexy man who is mad talented-evidenced also by his skit on “Best Week Ever.

    I.just.love.him.

    WOW

I am just so impressed with his composure- what a great face for America Idol.

Thanks MJ for keeping him fresh with us- I am so eager for any little bit of Cookie I can get and I am listening to my playlist of his from all the iTunes downloads all day long.

I dream in magic rainbows! LOL

I dream in magic rainbows! LOL

    Har!

I missed him on Best Week Ever, so I still have one more thing to catch before I have to go cold-turkey on Cookie!

  18. 18 dvls May 31st, 2008 at 9:08 am

He sang his first solo in 2nd grade? Ok, where IS that video? I want to see it!

  19. 19 dfc May 31st, 2008 at 9:47 am

David Cook’s second grade Christmas video. He was so cute.

He’s been at it all week, no?

Interesting musical influences. As someone was said, “To be a great writer, you have to read everything.” I guess the same holds for music. That’s pretty awesome.

  21. 21 candie May 31st, 2008 at 10:12 am

I love this interview and the way it starts by Cynthia saying, now a stunning fact 10% out of the 100 top ten songs are David Cooks! How stunning is right!
I loved this interview because it was about him and his music. The whole setup of the interview and the end when it showed David Cooks Playlist. He is so amazing. What a cool guy.
    Great interview by Nightline.

Is the promo over yet? Tonight Show, morning shows, tabloid shows, comedy and now this.
Maybe I wasn’t paying attention but I don’t remember Jordin/Blake getting this much PR. I remember Taylor getting GMA. Taylor had the People cover and the Ford commercial so I guess that counts.

I guess it’s a combo of media interest and the need to push the tour tickets some more.

Cook is the most polished, media ready winner Idol has ever had. He gets an A. But I’m starting to think rockers shouldn’t win this cheesy show. Although, I’m also thinking he’s more a pop guy than a rocker anyway.

  23. 23 candie May 31st, 2008 at 10:24 am

jpfan - I’m thinking you could be right about the rock star winning AI and maybe Cook is more a pop guy. I have been thinking that for a while. He can even sing Music of the Night. I worry about what the cheesy show is going to do to him music wise. I like it when he sings pop because he usually puts a rockers edge on it. I hope he still has a say in what he wants to sing and how.
    Time will tell…

  24. 24 IGetCranked May 31st, 2008 at 10:31 am

I would say he is the most perfect idol winner yet as far as charisma and media readiness. Wow.

Cook got a couple of more things than Jordan and Blake, but all the Idol winners make the rounds of the talk shows after the show is over.

I remember Taylor and Kat being everywhere after the finale.

  26. 26 awilliams May 31st, 2008 at 11:12 am

Taylor was on the Martha Stewart show too. Martha had him help her make some kind of wreath or something. Heh, I can just see Cook on there.

  27. 27 foxydonna May 31st, 2008 at 11:12 am

What sets Cook apart from previous Idol winners is that he’s so grounded. He also recognizes the challenges ahead and isn’t making any brash predictions about anything. I am so impressed by how quickly he adjusted to his newfound celebrity. He is so calm through all of this. This is the best of all the interviews I’ve watched - and I’ve seen them all! He really is on the precipice.

  28. 28 Sherry L May 31st, 2008 at 12:53 pm

Nice interview. He seems like a media pro already. I’m glad we got to see him talk about something besides the usual questions.

This round of press reminds me of season five. Taylor and Katharine did the same round of talks shows and morining shows. Actually on the Today Show, Taylor peformed three songs, so I was kind of hoping Cook would do more than “Time Of My Life.” But I know he has a lot on his plate right now.

  29. 29 Layla May 31st, 2008 at 2:16 pm

If you listen to DC’s pre idol music (really some great stuff) you will hear that he is definately a rocker with an emo edge.

As he said in the idolatry interview, he has to temper his rocker style with a view to making his music-to-come “palatable!.

I have a feeling his new record with be a cross between rock and pop- a nice combo which suits him and his style.

  30. 30 candie May 31st, 2008 at 2:53 pm

Funny how they have him sitting at a bar. I think this is the second time I have seen him in an interview at a bar. From bartender to famous!

  31. 31 Sarah May 31st, 2008 at 3:59 pm

This really was a fantastic interview. It’s great to hear him talking about MUSIC and not what he feels about the vote differential, how his love life is going, or the 324,576,980th retelling of his audition story.

Thanks for the cap mj! :) I wouldn’t have seen it otherwise.

  32. 32 Jolene May 31st, 2008 at 6:00 pm

Hmmm…. The YouTube version here has some extra interview bits. Is that from a website or something?

I like that Cook has such a wide range of musical taste. And yes, it’s very refreshing to hear him talk about his musical influences after being asked the same questions over and over again.

Ahh, thanks! I gasped really loudly when I heard him say he used Imogen Heap’s “Hide & Seek” to calm down, because I love that song and listen to it for the same purpose. And I never thought he was the type of person to be listening to someone like Imogen Heap, wow.

  34. 34 Sarah May 31st, 2008 at 6:26 pm

Hisaki, I was surprised too. I lurve Imogen Heap and that song is just so beautiful. It just further exhibits the range of his musical taste, imo. Because I too never would have imagined him listening to Imogen Heap.

  35. 35 dante May 31st, 2008 at 9:38 pm

I went to iTunes to listen to “Hide & Seek” and bought it - never heard Imogen Heap before but loved that song. Also listened to Nine Inch Nails song and White Zombies but neither song did anything for me on the short clip anyway.
I already loved “The World I Know” before Cookie sang it.

This interview is one of the best so far. I really enjoyed it.

I finally burned a CD of DC’s Idol songs from Rainbow song backwards to Top 24 including the non studios. I put it in my car and he sounds amazing. I gave a copy to my sis who doesn[’t watch Idol and is a big country fan and she called me and said “Wow, this guy can really sing” She has never said that about any other music I have given her.

    who’s keeping the “Cook-tionary” current?

  37. 37 reinharv Jun 1st, 2008 at 12:02 am

I really enjoy listening to David Cook doing interviews. He is incredibly articulate and clearly very intelligent. He has incredibly dry wit and can be incredibly funny at times. He’s a natural. He’s also the perfect spokesman for American Idol. He seems very much grounded, which will keep him in good stead as he navigates through this year as the winner of American Idol. He really is an open book and what you see is what you get. He’s incredibly diplomatic and clearly thinks before he speaks. He seems like he’s a really nice and genuine guy who is clearly very likeable. He wins people over because how can you not like him? He has even won over some diehard Archuleta fans as they appreciated his protectiveness and brotherly love for Archie. He is very much aware of what the buzz has been throughout this competition and has dealt with issues head on but in a subtle way.

i had forgetten about this appearance, so thanks mj for putting it up. i thought dcook gave a great interview.

  39. 39 skittles Jun 1st, 2008 at 9:44 am

Aww, I was spazzing out when he included Innocent. Haha! Well, I actually spazzed out when he performed it on AI. Just because I don’t think any contestant of AI would sing something…. as… “indie” or not too well-known as that. O_O

So uhh, yeah, seeing this made me happy. =D

And you’re right jan, this interview is refreshing. Just because it doesn’t include that “how does it feel after…” blah blah blah.

  40. 40 voteDC Jun 1st, 2008 at 10:34 am

I really love “The World I Know” and it’s probably the best performance during his final. But somehow the Itune sales is the worst among the four songs he’s released after the Idol. But anyway, I have been playing the World I Know nonstop on my player. Love the lyrics. It’s the kind of song I would listen when I am depressed.

  41. 41 sleepyinsomniac Jun 1st, 2008 at 10:41 am

First time here! I’m forced to visit for the lack of Cookie material elsewhere. :D

I have to say, MJ, that screencap is all kinds of hot! Cook looks really tired but he looked the best in this interview.

I love this interview. None of the same old stuff but managing to get some insight into the person without having to ask any personal questions.

  42. 42 carrie13 Jun 1st, 2008 at 1:18 pm

Destined for greatness. (”The World I Know” performance — mind blowing.) It’s amusing to think that if it weren’t for this cheesy show, the odds are that most of us would never have gotten to hear David Cook. Listen to his pre-Idol stuff — It’s just ho-hum average. He would have most likely languished in obscurity. But his recent AI performances were absolutely stellar. I think he just finally believed he could do it, and his talent just exploded. Leave your old album in the past, David Cook, and do your current thing. I for one, can’t get enough.
