I'm in the group who thinks the song is perfect for the sports package it showcased but am glad it didn't make the record. I'm also in the group that was disappointed to hear the advice given to him that he needs to be more straightforward in his songwriting. I love wordy, metaphorical Cook. IMO, it's what makes his songwriting
unique. I hope TPTB don't squash this gift in exchange for a more " radio friendly " sound.
I'm also hoping for some Cook/Tiemann collaborations on the next record; even Neal's harder stuff such as " Call To Arms " is really melodic.

let's face it, as a sports fan himself, DC has got to be geeking out in a very, very big way.

That honestly makes me happier than anything -- that he gets to do all this cool stuff when he's such a sports fan. Love it.

Here's hoping that DC adds a Washington show' ¦.

We could have a reunion! Shazzer and vascot... good times. Charlottesville was one great day, wasn't it? So nice meeting everyone.

Wait, there's a chance we could hear it tonight? I'm excited if that's true.

Ooh, we might hear it tonight? Yeah, I'll be watching. My hubby is a Philly fan anyway. He's going to be like... "Damn, girl is *biddable* tonight letting me watch baseball all night long." Then the song will come on and... eyebrow raise exasperated look comes my way. Ah, well. I could squish him anyway, he let me go to five shows this year and though I think he was worried I was flinging panties (giggle, no way dude)... he was cool and let me have some fun.

Thanks for posting my list, LadyM! I was having trouble getting on the internet last night and definitely could not have done it.

I like the song, and do think that it is a nice fit for sporting events. Thank you also to everyone who hunted down the lyrics. I had a feeling that there had been an edit leading to a repeat of one of the choruses, but that was just my sense from it. Anyway, I love that these ESPN guys seem to really like DC, and that he's getting more chances to have his music be a part of big sporting events---nice for getting his music and voice out there to sports fans, but also, let's face it, as a sports fan himself, DC has got to be geeking out in a very, very big way.

One other thing: Hey, Tierbee! Didn't get to say this the other night before the Extreme Makeover thread closed, but it was great to meet you in Charlottesville! Here's hoping that DC adds a Washington show....

cheesehead, I say this lovingly, but fearbear has every right to "bother listening" to DC's song and commenting on hating it here. So she doesn't like it, doesn't like DC's stuff in general. No biggie. I'd comment/respond if I felt there was something worth discussing, but in this case, not so much.

    fearbear -

Generic, as per Cook's usual recipe.

Have you by chance heard Analog Heart?

I like Cook's songwriting, others do not. I doubt at this point whether either group will ever change opinions about it, a year after the record drop. That's just fine with me. There are certain posters here that I skip over now anyway, since I know basically what will be said. I'm happier that way, too. :)

Awww tierbee and BootStar, my fellow Cooktards I mean fans. hee. WAAAAHHH I can't listen or watch anything at work on here right now. Boo. BUT I just wanted to chime in on the Cook songwriting etc discussion. I'm listening to Close Your Eyes right now. Love that Cook, especially the YEAH after the 2nd verse-like part. I listen to Incarcerate a lot as well.

I really like the writing on Analog Heart too, the lyrics especially. Fall Back Into Me has interesting lyrics and interesting music & rhythms. Like that one a lot. I like angsty, dark, moody Cook. And Neal Fingtiemann too. I would love some more Cook/Tiemann penned songs, please, on this next album. I think I agree with you guys about Neal's looks...I do find him attractive! So, I like rockin' snarly Cook too. Oh I like pretty much all the Cook I've heard...EXCEPT, I just realized, some of the rambling, very wordy, vague Axium songs (from the Veder-tone days). OOOO I really like his take on Creep!

I like MWK Anodyne, love Cook's singing lead too. Circles Anthem, Stuck Under Wheels, One True Thing, Make Me...probably my faves.

DCTR least fave is probably...ummmmmmm...Come Back To Me? I dunno. I like the whole album, but I will often skip that one. I like LIVE Cook & The Anthemic best, over the recorded version!

OK back to weeeeeerk. Blah.

Seemed really friendly and there's something oddly' ¦ cute about him. I know you're not going for cute, Neal, but with your extra fuzzy hair in Charlottesville you were cute. Sorry.

I second that. He is cute in a weird way. The more he trys to look tough the cuter he gets IMHO. Maybe it's just me.

The lyrics to Anodyne are awesome... so are 'Til I'm Blue, is that all Neal too? I love MWK stuff, helps that I like Andy's voice but I think it's Neal's lyrics that really draw me. While I'm currently in a sort of laid back acoustic vibe sort of mood I really like the darker, moody stuff too. So Neal + David would be a whole lot of win for me. And stuff with Raine Maida is good, too. And pictures with David and Raine because... well. They are kinda hot, you know.

I wish I knew more about Neal, he seems so mysterious.

Doesn't David call him an enigma? What's funny is I've heard a few times that he's really accessible and friendly as far as talking to fans -- and when we were in Charlottesville he was the one at the end of the bar (yes, I was stealing peeks at them, I mean, could I help it?) chatting with the fans. Seemed really friendly and there's something oddly... cute about him. I know you're not going for cute, Neal, but with your extra fuzzy hair in Charlottesville you were cute. Sorry :)

and I actually prefer a lot of the old Axium stuff (faux Eddie Vedder voice notwithstanding) to Analog Heart

I like a lot of Analog Heart but there is a lot of REALLY good stuff in the Axium catalog. Wouldn't you love to get some of it recorded now?! I love the broody, slower stuff. I f'love Therapy but this is my latest love...

What the eff is going on? What's with the new user interface re comments?

Anyway:
I want more Neal/David' ¦ Neal brings the angst

Yup -- Lyrics to Anodyne were all Neal according to Dave. Dave only wrote the music. Neal also brings the rocking jaded bad boy (KOTN) when he writes with the Cook. So yeah, more Neal please. (And yeah, Maida rocks my socks too, because . . . he just does and I lurves me some Mr. S, Heroes and Permanent.) Don't get the Malloy haterade given that he helped with Lie and LOTM (even if he did also give us CBTM).

So yeah, more Neal please. (And yeah, Maida rocks my socks too, because . . . he just does and I lurves me some Mr. S, Heroes and Permanent.) Don’t get the Malloy haterade given that he helped with Lie and LOTM (even if he did also give us CBTM).

What happened? Did we Flash Forward here??? It's now 4:00 pm???

Count me among the Til I'm Blue and Anodyne fans. And I'll never get the love for WOHWWS, but I like Souvenir. And I actually prefer a lot of the old Axium stuff (faux Eddie Vedder voice notwithstanding) to Analog Heart, which (with the exception of a few songs) doesn't do a whole lot for me. I love wordy Cook, too, but only when he's not mixing metaphors and misuing words.

I saw David Gray perform last night at the Tower Theater, and that's a dude who knows how to write songs. They're pure poetry, but it's poetry that works. DC really should listen to his stuff, because he covers a lot of the same themes (heartbreak, death when you're an unbeliever, etc.).

Oh, and somebody threw DG a Phils cap at the end of the evening, and he put it on for about five seconds, but clearly wasn't feeling the baseball drama. At. All. Not much on banter, either. That's what I think makes Cook so exceptional; he's incredibly personable and comfortable making small talk. Not all artists are. Love me my Davids (Gray and Cook)!

Yeah, lyrics, finally. Wordnerdarchie and s3rious, you rock. I couldn't make out anything beyond "one second to change your life, blah blah blah, day turns to night, dah dah dah, Phils win!" I have been holding out for the lyrics before deciding how I feel about the song. On one hand, it's a little too motivational speakerish for my tastes, and yet, not half as cheesy and pointless as something like No Boundaries, which is pretty much every metaphor you can think of for overcoming obstacles strung together haphazardly. I do like that the one second to change your life concept of the song touches on the age old philosophical fatalism vs. freewill debate (the central theme of Lost, for all you Lost junkies.) "In a blink of an eye, day turns to night"=bad twist of fate=fatalism, while replacing change with save in the last stanza kinda says you still have choices to make to change things, which I guess means in the end, the song comes down on the side of free will. I dig that because fatalism has always seemed so depressing to me.

And as a diehard Philadelphia Phillies fan, I just loved having David's voice sung over images of my team.

Ditto. Also, the Kruk love for Cookie is woo hoo worthy.

s3rious,

You are correct. "it's the only shape take your own today" , was what was originally posted at Cherry Lane, but he seems to be singing "It's the old cliche, take your own today" as you've stated in your post. Thanks for the update. :)

David Cook sings the hell out of another remarkably mediocre song, but for whatever reason, folks love some cheese with their sports montages, so I think it works well enough. And as a diehard Philadelphia Phillies fan, I just loved having David's voice sung over images of my team. Chase Utley, Jayson Werth and David Cook. It don't get any better than that! :-)

A hundred signs choices at every turn
Hours stacking up with time to burn
This road will keep on going, it only stops for you
It's up to you so make a move

It only takes one second to change your life
Everything can turn
When you blink your eye, day turns to night
One second to change your mind
Finally breathe the air that you've held inside
One second to change your life

Million skies and all of them are fake
Behind your eyes man, you got it made
Every guess is young at heart but I've been right where you are
It's the old cliche, take your own today

It only takes one second to change your life

Back to the song "One Second to Change Your Life", I looked at the original lyrics as posted at Cherry Lane Publishing (that I posted in the yesterday's headline thread) and realized that Cook changed them for ESPN. So typically David Cook. Yeah!

Here are the revised (ESPN Version) lyrics (minus one verse and additional chorus that was in the original posted lyric. Minor changes made to match what was aired, based upon my hearing the song).

Note that there are some minor little twists that are usually present in a Cook penned lyric. :)

OK, first of all, twitpics with Oreos and twitpics with hardhat & boots? Love.

Made hubby listen to song without telling who it was, but of course he guessed (hee), he liked it, thought it was great for sports. So, it reaches new non-Cookified ears, this is good. It's fine, it's not spectacular, but I like it. Go Cookie :)

Hmm, very late to party but I LOVE Anodyne & 'Til I'm Blue and will take angsty, dark Cook anyday. Though I'm happy for him if he's happy and doesn't have so much dark to draw from, lol. I absolutely love The Truth from AH, I love We're Only Honest When We're Sleeping too. I'm in inordinately fond of Straight Ahead but maybe that's more because the first time I heard it live I was SO excited to hear something off AH... plus he wanders during that song at many of his shows. So it brings back fond memories of WanderingDave. Still in love with Therapy by Axium... and several other angsty ones :)

Give me back Wordy Dave because I like. I love Mr. Sensitive and ADAM. I do love his current album, though, at least a lot of it... Lie, Avalanche, Heroes, Permanent, ADAM. We also play Declaration a lot, it gets my kids all happy, hee! The songs I don't like so much? I Did It For You (concert version is GREAT, though), Come Back to Me... hee. Light On is just ok for me.

Can't really judge the song with all the noise on top of it, but it does seem very Sports-montages-appropriate, albeit a little repetitive towards the end. I like it, but I like pretty much anything that involves David singing.

I LOVE the favorite songs discussion. Man, I've been away from the fandom for a good few months since starting my current job, and this discussion just reminded me how much I really love the songs this man writes. Anodyne is definitely a favorite, and I love that it has a darker vibe than most of David's other songs. I FLOVE his wordiness on AH (and most of the Axium catalogue) and I miss it somewhat in DCTR (Except for ADAM), so I really hope he turns the lyrical gymnastics back on for album #2. I do love most of DCTR though, with Lie, Heroes, ADAM and Avalanche at the top of my list.
And I still hope against hope we'll get to hear the whole unreleased album that WOHWWS came from. Someday?

Can’t really judge the song with all the noise on top of it, but it does seem very Sports-montages-appropriate, albeit a little repetitive towards the end. I like it, but I like pretty much anything that involves David singing.

I LOVE the favorite songs discussion. Man, I’ve been away from the fandom for a good few months since starting my current job, and this discussion just reminded me how much I really love the songs this man writes. Anodyne is definitely a favorite, and I love that it has a darker vibe than most of David’s other songs.

"One second to change your life" on one hand sounds too much like Norman Vincent Peale, you know, positive thinking and all that.

But then again, it's true that one second can change your life, for positive or negative, it's kind of a profound thought actually. Life is full of "one seconds" and we make split second decisions that sometimes affect the rest of our lives. The driver who leaves the scene of an accident, for instance, changes their life in a bad way.

David had that one second when he was encouraged to audition for AI, and he could have said no, as a rocker he might have thought it was too cheesy, etc., but he said yes, and the rest is history.

Sometimes cliches are not so bad. Inspiration is a good thing.

I'm glad the song wasn't on the cd, but it's perfect for a sports montage. And it's kind of like Miley Cyrus's "The Climb", an inspirational song. We can't be jaded all the time, got to have some inspiration too. :) Actually to me the song sounds something like Daughtry's "No Surprise." Got a similar bouncy peppy vibe. Not DC's deepest song, but not everything has to be deep, angsty, and meaningful. Nice to hear a light song from him.

If it was not good enough for David Cook last year, why would it be good enough now? Is it really that hard to either write yourself a song or have someone write one for you? Meh. Would need to hear it without the crap in the background.

Always nice to hear something new from David Cook :)

and it's fun to read people's thoughts about his songs. He definitely has a lot of songs out there to talk about, and his lyrics are worthy of discussion too.

From twitter:

whateveryaknow: @thedavidcook Philly news said that your song One Second to Change Your Life is the official song for World Series. Good omen fo our Phils!

I'd say it was either this or Heroes on the album, and between the two I think I like Heroes more. But this one really gets me moving too. lol

Isn't this Kris Allen's new song? Or is it a Kris Allen reject?

To me the song sounds more like Dream Big than Allen's new song, but I like Allen's song melody more. OTOH, I'm more into this one's lyrics.
