David Cook Set to Move 125-130k Per HDD

Hits Daily Double predicts David Cook, the album, will move 125-130K units this last, big holiday shopping week. And it could land in the Top 10 for a fifth straight week.

Here’s how HDD thinks the Top 10 will shake out. David vies for the 10 spot with Kanye, Anthony Hamilton’s debut, and the ever-popular NOW series:

1. Taylor Swift (Big Machine), 340-355k
2. Keyshia Cole (Geffen debut), 300-315k
3. Jamie Foxx (J/RMG debut), 230-245k
4. Britney Spears (Jive/ZLG), 175-190k
4. Beyonce (Music World/Columbia), 175-190k
6. Nickelback (Roadrunner), 165-175k
7. Twilight (Chop Shop/Atlantic), 150-160k
8. AC/DC (Columbia), 140-150k
9. Fall Out Boy (Island/IDJ debut), 130-135k
10. Kanye West (Roc-A-Fella/IDJ), 125-130k
10. Now 29 (UMe), 125-130k
10. David Cook (19/RCA/RMG), 125-130k
10. Anthony Hamilton (LaFace/ZLG debut), 125-130k

Taylor Swift is freaking unstoppable. Scary! Whether David stays in the Top 10 or not, he looks to have another strong week of album sales.

In other news, the Saturday Night Live episode featuring David as the musical guest will repeat on December 27, He and bandmate Neil Tiemann will perform “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” on The Walt Disney World Christmas Day Parade on the 25th, he and the band will perform on New Year’s Eve Live on FOX, and he’s set to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live January 13th.

Yeah, I don’t get SP’s method, and I try not to buy into their numbers, because usually they have very little to do with the end result.

I’m not counting on DCTR staying in the Top 10 this week, but I am curious to see if it can go back up there next week even if it does drop off now.
Is next week already considered the start of a downturn with post Christmas sales, or will the last 3 shopping days keep the numbers relatively steady? I know it’s all speculation, of course, just want to know when the big drop offs usually occur.

I’m not too concerned if Cook doesn’t stay in Top 10 because being in Top 10 for 4 straight weeks is very impressive considering the competition and all the new releases by well-established artists such as Taylor Swift, Nickleback, Beyonce and Britney so #10 is very impressive during that time-frame. That in itself speak volumes to me. As far as estimates by HDD, they have been pretty close for him so I can easily see him reaching 700K this week.

Well Ken Barnes :dunce_tb: are you still maintaining 2-1/2*? :lol_wp:

I haven’t seen that picture before. There’s something vaguely Big Brother-ish about that giant 19 next to Cook. Somehow I now imagine a secret underground lair where Simon Fuller is sitting in a giant leather chair, stroking a cat, saying…yes, yes, go on, buy David Cook’s record, muah ha ha! Well, Fuller, you got me, you bastard. Hee. Kidding, mostly. ANyway, very happy for Cook and hope he gets six figure sales again. I’d freak if he somehow managed to stay in the top ten. Unlikely to happen, though. Also, I’m surprised Jamie Foxx’s 15 minutes aren’t up. Yes, I am bitter that he has an Oscar for Ray and Joaquin Phoenix was denied for Walk the Line. But that’s a topic for another blog.

For those interested, you can find that pic’s photoshoot here.

I don’t think it would in any way be bad if DC is not in the top 10. I do think that it would be great if he made top 10 again, not only in and of itself, but also because I suspect that we’ll be likely to get his numbers faster if he’s in the top ten.

The following week’s numbers should also be strong for the music market (well, insofar as anything is “strong” in this particular music market) because it will include (1) the last three shopping days before Xmas and (3) the first three shopping days after Xmas, when people are using itunes gift cards and otherwise buying stuff at various sales that they didn’t get for Xmas.

  • SashaB:

I agree, Folk Fan. DC’s numbers are nothing short of great, especially in our troubled economy. Top 10 is great, but if he moves 125k units and is ranked 11th, um, yeah, I will not really mind or care. Seriously.

I totally expected David Cook’s new album to do well, and he has even exceeded my expectations. RCA doesn’t even want to apply for gold certification since they know he’ll be going platinum soon, and he would have to wait an extra 5 months if they had applied for the gold certification. His single TOML went platinum in no time, too. I wonder what the #’s are for Light On. I know it’s doing well, too, with being one of the top videos of 2008, and all. Cook against Britney, West, Beyonce, all the big hitters. It doesn’t seem to phase his numbers any at all…WOW! This guy is already a SUPERSTAR!

  • FolkFan:

LO was at 319,505 in sales through Sunday 12/14 according to last week’s Billboard update.

  • oceana:

I’m very excited and happy for David Cook. It’s a thrill to watch his continued success.

  • wordnerdarchie:

    HDD final estimates are in!

    10 13 DAVID COOK 19/RCA/RMG 132,527 27%
    21 22 DAVID ARCHULETA 19/JIVE/ZLG 81,735 37%

    Great numbers for both David’s!

  • SashaB:

Unbelievable numbers, he sold more than HDD’s projections! Wow. 132K?! Congrats DC.

  • smartcookie:

Fabulous! 132K? That’s well over 700K with another week of sales for 2008, right? I was estimating 750K by Jan 1, but I may well be too low!

I like that. More of that!

  • Jolene:

714,500 (give or take, we’ll see when the final numbers leak) with one more strong week projected (though not as strong as this one has been). I think he could possibly still bring in around 100k this week (fingers crossed), and if he does, he’ll have less than 200k to make up for Platinum in the new year.

    AWESOME!

  • sleepyinsomniac:

These numbers are fantastic. I had thought before that the good numbers for the year end would be in the vicinity of 650-700k, but am I glad to be wrong. Just 85k short of 800. And he’ll hopefully be ending the new year with 800k. Are the any projections here or elsewhere of sales and when he’ll end up with platinum based on these numbers?

  • Dang, David Cook!!

  • aidc08:

I was shopping at Nordstrom yesterday and what was prominently displayed at the cash register in the Women’s Shoe department? None other that Mr. David Cook’s cd…only one copy left I might add. Now that’s product placement!

    Way to go Cookie!

  • Trina:

That’s hilarious because a couple of weeks ago I was in Bloomingdales and his CD was on a display near one of the registers. I thought that was a total WTF thing. I wonder if sales from these stores count in Soundscan?

  • FolkFan:

I believe they do, Trina. I think that soundscan now covers all record sales. I don’t have a cite for that, though.

sleepyinsomniac, we’ve been talking quite a bit about that today on DCO’s Chart Thread. Long story short: the five weeks starting after the New Year should be ugly for the entire music industry. They always are, and this year, if anything, could be worse, given how badly the music industry has been doing and what’s going on with the economy. So, a record selling around what DC has been selling now that manages to scrape out 100K during those five weeks would be doing very, very well.

That said, DC is making the most of this high-selling time by increasing his sales in December, so while Platinum is extremely unlikely in January or early February, he is at least creating the possibility of it occurring by the end of March. Which would be awesome.

Oh, and the Today show used Magic Rainbow as a montage song. We could be seeing a rebound of the Rainbow, and/or some Rainbow-connected increases in record sales. Man, I love Magic Rainbow. It really does not know the meaning of the word quit.
