I just want to go on record as saying “I” think Ellen is a very good judge, so what if she tells everyone that she likes them, maybe there is something about each person she finds unique. So what if she makes jokes before she gives a “real” critique, I find what ever she says as a joke “nice” for the contestant…

I will be glad when people stop bashing her, because in “my” opinion she is doing her job, and she is doing it well enough to be up there with the other 2 idiots that are not Simon!!!

I think Ellen is great. I like her a lot, and I think she’s doing a good job on Idol.

  • Junior:

That cut out at the wrong time! Ellen has an iTunes page where you can download the performances for free?

  • Junior:

I agree, Kay. I’m not sure what expectations people have of Ellen that she’s not living up to? I think she’s doing a fine job given her limitations as a music layperson.

  • J9BT:

She is hysterical! I am one who was very attached to Paula, so it was difficult seeing her go. Obviously they needed to ensure the ratings wouldn’t be negatively affected, so they had to pick someone who would be sure to keep them up, and that’s Ellen.

I know that true music lovers don’t appreciate that Ellen isn’t a trained musician/vocalist, and wonder why it is necessary to listen to her comments which are from a fan’s perspective rather than an expert’s perspective. That said, I think she is doing her job of commenting on the general likeability of the performances, which is oftentimes needed amidst Randy’s “yo, dawg, you’re hot” or “yo dawg, it was kinda pitchy,” Kara’s technical comments and Simon’s mean comments.

  • YouTube PLEASE :) and thank u

I flive Ellen that is all

I consider myself a true music lover. ;) I also believe Ellen is doing a great job! I personally think the first week or so of the semi-finals felt very heavy from the judges’ comments. There was no lightness from the panel and perhaps Ellen has noticed this and decided to make it more lighthearted, which she has. Just an observation and opinion.

Ellen presented a check to the girl in Mississippi who wanted to take her girlfriend to the prom and the school cancelled the prom. A $30,000 scholarship check! I love Ellen!

I don’t understand the Ellenhate that is floating around the Idolsphere (not here–this place is always a relative island of sanity in Idolworld).

People squawk that she isn’t a musician and they seem to think that’s all that matters. Newsflash, folks: being a musician is only about 50% of the Pop Star equation (if that). Pop stardom has *never* been purely about the music. It’s about entertainment. And Ellen knows entertainment. She made her bones in one of the most cutthroat businesses of them all. So I say, preach on, girlfriend!

In general I find Ellen’s comments to be a little bit more substantive and good bit more coherent than Paula’s or Randy’s ever were, so I have no problem with her. Her style of comedy does cause some pacing problems, since a lot of her delivery is really drawn out – with four judges on the panel, she may need to speed things up a bit. I get the sense that she’s settling-in faster than Kara did – Kara is still really struggling to find her voice and persona on the panel.

But in general I am actually finding the judges to be a lot more on-point than they have been in recent seasons, despite some of the contradictory and “confusing” advice that they have been accused of. Personally, I would rather have the panel giving real, substantive critiques that may sometimes leave them at odds with each other, rather than delivering rote and completely unconstructive bon mots like “dawg, you could sing the phone book.”

The most interesting tidbit from this (besides the strange and truncated revelation that Ellen is offering the Idol performances for free download somewhere??) is that the judges are given DVD recordings of the rehearsal footage to review before the live show. It’s been speculated for many years and was essentially confirmed during the Jason Castro “Paulagate” during S7, but to have Ellen flat-out say that rehearsals are used as part of the judging criteria is interesting. It certainly explains the occasional jarring disconnect when a contestant seriously flubs lyrics or has major pitch problems and is given a pass, or when a really good performance gets inexplicable bussing. The judges, most notably Simon, rarely seem to be paying attention during actual performances, so I guess it’s good they at least watch the rehearsals. But still, I wish the show would force the judges to actually think on their feet and evaluate the contestants on the same playing field that the TV audience is.

  • I think Ellen meant her podcast of her interviews with each week’s cast-off, Idols on Ellen. Lacy’s is up, and it includes her interview and performance on Ellen:

I like Ellen as a judge too. She makes more sense than Paula ever did, and is intentionally funny in a kind way, rather than a drugged out fool like Paula. I hate the way Simon and Randy openly mock contestants they don’t like. Kara seems to have decided that she’s taking over the sexy judge/ Simon’s playmate role from Paula. Too bad, ’cause she’s been making more sense this year. I just wish they’d only let her give 2 sentence long critiques, and otherwise not let her speak or interact with other judges.

This also leads us to believe the comments are scripted and written down BEFORE the contestants perform. In the end, it hurts them as how can advice be given when it doesn’t apply to what we’ve seen and heard.

Ellen is doing a pretty good job. I hope she continues to improve.

I actually ALWAYS crack up at Ellen and her stupid jokes! Come on – the one where she said to Casey, “For people like me….blondes..” That was hysterical! I think she brings a new element of fun and relief to the table. The poor contestants are alreading peeing in their pants as it is….Ellen is a just comedic relief version of Paula, but of course, with more substance. Haha

Just to add my agreement- it feels pretty dumb to look at judges acting surprised when they’re actually not.
Remember when Simon told Adam last year at disco night that his song was totally unexpected, that he would have put money on him doing a Donna Summers song… I understand that maybe he wasn’t “lying”, just saying what he actually felt when he saw it at the rehearsal, but it sounds a little lame to be pretend to be surprised, when you’re actually not…
Maybe that’s just the way television works- but then it souldn’t be revealed… not sure the producers will be happy with Ellen for saying it.
Then again, I heard about Paula’s slip on S7, so I guess it’s not such a secret anymore.

That was pretty revealing, eh? I’m kind of disappointed that Paula did not, in fact, have the power to flash through time after all. It would explain a lot. I’ve also noticed that there’s more of the “after watching the performance back, I am changing what I said a little bit” going on this season too during results night. Kara has done it a few times. And that again acknowledges that the judges commentary doesn’t always jive with what we’re seeing at home.
