I can’t wait for Elliott’s album.
Anyone have any predictions on first week sales?
I’m going to go ahead and say it’ll be between 70-90k.
This of course could change depending on how well his single does.
I don’t know LBB. Believe it or not, I don’t pay scrupulous attention to the exact numbers. Go figure. I know it’s around 500K, respectable numbers for that single - that was my point. If it bothers you I will correct: “around 500K”. Is that better?
According to HDD today, they have shipped 180,000 copies of Elliott’s album which I think means they expect sales of 60,000 the first week. That number feels right to me. Remember the #1 album last week(Chris) only sold 90K or so. That I know this means I need to get out more.
I had heard that Elliott’s CD will have bonus tracks at the TargetS. Can anyone one confirm or dent this? If not will there be bonus tracks on the Walmart version or elsewhere? I like to buy the CDs with bonus tracks. I’m a bonus track whore. Thank you.
It’s been an interesting afternoon to say the least. Anyways, I came home this afternoon to find my copy of Entertainment Weekly in my mailbox. As I was flipping through the pages, a familiar picture caught my eye. EW decided to weigh in on Taylor’s sales - or as some see it, lack thereof. The article isn’t on EW’s website (I searched) so I decided to scan it (too lazy to type it out) for your reading pleasure (if this type of article tickles your fancy):
I too am so happy for Elliott and his fans. The Season 5 idols have all done very well for themselves and are making names for themselves outside of AI in the music business in a variety of ways - whether it’s CD sales, tour sales, television appearances, videos, charities, books, etc. No more carhopping at Sonic for Kellie, no more auto-related careers for Chris and Bucky, no more clerking for Elliott, and certainly no more bunny suits for Taylor! All of them are in a much better place now than they could have imagined one year ago. Kudos to ALL of them!
This year’s crop is a difficult one to judge at this point, at least for me. Last year there appeared to be much more variety among the contestants. I do like that Jordin is trying to separate herself from the 3 divas - she may be the most versatile female other than Melinda (’cause I think Melinda can flat-out sing anything and sing it WELL). Lakisha and Stephanie haven’t shown me at this point they can sing anything other than ballads with all the glory notes, etc. Gina, although a rocker at heart, needs to pick an identity and stick with it. Haley - well, who is she again?
The guys are a little more versatile, but only Blake really stands out. His voice isn’t the best but he is quite a performer and has great command of the stage. Brandon has great potential but unless he steps out of the backup singer mode and picks better songs I’m afraid he’s not sticking around much longer. Chris S. is not doing a thing for me and I don’t get the hype, but I suppose his voice is among the strongest of the boys (but that’s not saying much). Chris R. needs to develop his own style and get away from the whole Timberlake-vibe (although the young girls are really loving him because of this vibe). Phil is lucky to be here after last week’s horrendous performance. I do think he can sing but not songs by Leann Rimes! Ugh. And then there’s Sanjaya. Poor Sanjaya is all I can say.
I know the top 2 among this group will receive recording contracts, but I don’t see the group as a whole doing as well as the Season 5 crop of contestants. I’m pulling for Melinda and Blake at this point, with Jordin and Brandon following not-too-closely behind. The rest, bleh. However, in the Top 12, anything can happen. I hope someone WOWs me soon, or this is going to be a veeerrrryyyy long season.
Regarding selling CD’s. I scanned the last couple pages and no one mentioned Gina G I don’t think. I’m not a fan of hers but am wondering if she could give Kelly Clarkson a run for her money in the “rocker chick” market.
A photographer from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution is at Taylor’s concert standing in front of the boogie boarders that are there and will have pictures up later…
OMG.
I was just checking out the ajc link above and found this story about Brad Delp being found dead at his home. Brad was the lead singer of BOSTON and a really really nice guy. He also had a Beatles band ( Beatlejuice) that played locally at Johnny D’s in Boston quite often. He could sound like any of the Beatles- he was an amazing singer.
Sorry this is off topic but I am just so shocked and sad to read this.
ATKINSON, N.H. — Brad Delp, the lead singer for the band Boston, was found dead Friday in his home in southern New Hampshire. He was 55. Atkinson police responded to a call for help at 1:20 p.m. and found Delp dead. Police Lt. William Baldwin said in a statement the death was “untimely” and that there was no indication of foul play.
Delp apparently was alone at the time of his death, Baldwin said.
The cause of his death remained under investigation by the Atkinson police and the New Hampshire Medical Examiner’s office. Police said an incident report would not be available until Monday.
Delp sang vocals on Boston’s 1976 hits “More than a Feeling” and “Longtime.” He also sang on Boston’s most recent album, “Corporate America,” released in 2002.
He joined the band in the early 1970s after meeting Tom Scholz, an MIT student interested in experimental methods of recording music, according to the group’s official Web site. The band enjoyed its greatest success and influence during its first decade.
The band’s last appearance was in November 2006 at Boston’s Symphony Hall.
On Friday night, the Web site was taken down and replaced with the statement: “We just lost the nicest guy in rock and roll.”
A call to the Swampscott, Mass., home of Boston guitarist Barry Goudreau was not immediately returned Friday night.
Here’s a report of the Atlanta Concert from the Boogies board :
Atlanta, GA, 9 Mar 2007 set list:
Opening act: The Greyhounds
Soul Thing Josh gets things moving and Boogie lays it down, more Josh acrobatics
Heaven Knows tour standard “when I come hoooooommmmmmmmmmme” 4x, drums, bass funk out, Melanie sounds great, Josh and Boogie exchange a bitta smackdown, then segues directly into…
The Maze Funky bass, first I thought it was more funked out, but then Josh was bringing some rock chords, Taylor repeating “you don’t know, you don’t know,” tags You Make Me Feel So Free (sung low and almost acapella) brief tag and moves to Let’s Get It On brief tag
Compared to What Band gets featured in the opening, Taylor starts low and easy, then pop punctuates at the end of the line ComPARed to WHAT, scattalicious squeaky sax, Josh rips some jazzy riffs, band gets more facetime to jam, nice, baby.
Wherever I Lay My Hat Basic Taylor vocals, light sniffs of sax behind him to accent, tour standard call and response with “Marvin” and “Jackie” to tag Night Shift brief tag, bit of extended falsetto on the end of the tag, tags Chain Gang brief tag, the audience singing repeats so he can go back to Night Shift brief tag
Just to Feel That Way Tonight’s version is exploring the Bon Jovi in Taylor, big audience sing along, Taylor kind of Vicks Vaporub on the high notes
Give Me Tonight Josh is moving this to the 80’s big hair geetar, 70s disco has been abandoned for the “Greed is Good” and shoulder pads sound, whoa there Boogie and Josh and Brian G do a threesome of awesomeitude, big Rawk Starr finish chords from the band.
The Deal Knob Creek straight up country guitar version with extra sax
Goodbye Stranger only second time he has done this on the tour Well, helllooo Melanie gets a feature…seriously, it’s the late 70s, the jam band is king, everyone’s in tight pants, and right now Josh is making me relive my youth.
Heart and Soul Basic start, Josh does some Van Halen-ish finger work while keeping to the basic script, Boogie feeds the increasing energy, begins to get almost Too Too, and then Taylor reins everybody back so Boogie can make his bass crush us with extended deep hotness, Taylor tags Brown-Eyed Handsome Man brief tag, band does some awesome in-synch chords, to introduce the “rounding home, rounding home” repeat thing he does, big finish, claro que si.
Gonna Move Tour standard version, call and response with “Yea Yea,” Boogie solo, well duh! Makes my tongue hurt, not sure why, I get all perturbed and woozy when Boogie does the bass solo on this song.
Hold on to Your Love Tour standard fast calypso version, tonight the band is very tight, lots of very impressive simultaneous sharp synchopated chords, slows it all down to tag Can’t Trust Your Neighbor, Josh does a lovely, lovely electric blue jazz solo, shades of Muddy Waters? Taylor falsettos us into Night Life, followed by the big shake and bake blues build up and finish.
Dream Myself Awake A perfectly serviceable version. Perhaps a bizarrely inappropriate rap would give this a bit more sauce? Nice Josh solo, works with what he’s got.
The Right Place IMO, Taylor sings this a bit conservatively tonight compared to other nights, keeping it tighter to the chest, perhaps a country feel from the band.
The Runaround 15th song of the night, extra long set Good stuff, general runaround energy, probably spinning and all that, shuts down to tag Goin’ Up the Country??, train harp, leads to Cold Baloney, more train harp, Love Me Do harp bit (hee hee), the big Carnegie Hall finish.
ENCORE ( more, more, more from audience )
Taylor comes back in and they hear the intro strains from the keyboard to … GEORGIA !!
Sax is an awesome addition to this already awesome song. Taylor roars for a bit, then moves to the scat, and the band pushes the Rehearsals.com big lungy blues jam version. Actually, That was a lot more, um, aggressive, rockier, bluesier version. Kind of over the top band jam, we lose some of the voice, and the “that’s all folks” ending.
It is obvious from the descriptions I heard that Taylor’s voice is getting strained.
I’m a little worried. 10 straight sold-out concerts with little rest in between. He’s killing himself. JTFTW is a hard song to sing and it looks like he needed Vicks Vaporub on the high notes.
Tomorrow is supposed to be the big night when the great Jeff Lopez joins the band too.
Can’t remember who told me this…. but I was asking out loud a few days ago why we don’t see Jeff Lopez with the band when it was advertised that he would be part of the 8 man band ( it has been 7 thus far ). The response I got was that Jeff had personal business to attend to but will be joining the concert at Birmingham.
If he won’t, what happened ? Is he out for the rest of the tour ?
I know that Sundance went home because I didn’t vote for him, being the evil little SP’er that I am. Having said that, I haven’t, and, won’t vote for anyone this season. They couldn’t give me a ticket to see that bunch on tour. No more pop tarts for me.
Excuse me now, while I clear out a corner in my vacant room to set up a shrine to the AI god of rock, Chris Daughtry. (gag)
LBB -
I haven’t heard any accounts from the Ryman ast night (Thurs) but no doubt he through himself into that show. I was at the show in Atlanta tonight and frankly, I think Taylor just has problems with the low end of his register. He hit some pretty high notes on Goodbye Stranger (I think), although he left the extended falsetto to Loren and Melanie. He also some high notes pretty easily on the Commadores’ Night Shift (not Night Life). The beginning of JTFTW always sounds rough live to me and he’s said that song almost didn’t make the album. I’m guessing it’s because he just can’t seem to get a handle on it yet. I didn’t notice that problem with any other song tonight.
By the way, that guy is a ball of energy and it’s clear he feeds off the crowd. We were fortunate enough to get spots right up by the stage. He puts on a fantastic show and even got me to like the two least favorite cuts off his new CD (Give Me Tonight and The Maze).
For those of you who were speculating why Daughtry has been missing a member of the band for the past few shows:
Josh Steely has been at home with his wife Mary awaiting the birth of their second child. Mary gave birth to a health baby boy (named Jonah) yesterday. Josh is now the proud papa of two boys (Trevor is the oldest).
I’m sorry to disappoint those who wondered if another spice boy was leaving the band. Josh will be rejoining the band as soon as possible.
CarlaD, that is great news, congrats to Josh and Mary. I haven’t had time to keep up with the latest Daughtry news, so I didn’t know that, thanks for posting.
In case no one else reports this from Gray’s or the boogie boards - Taylor himself admitted to a sore throat and some were saying strep but Brian L’s wife reported in that she had spoken with Brian and it is just a cold bug not strep.
Someone also reported the air in the venue is extremely dry which as we all have experienced makes a sore throat feel even worse.
While the Meet & Greets are great they do expose Taylor to a lot of potential problems. Probably an artist less dedicated to his fans would eliminate them.
He will be meeting with 300 fans today at Laser’s Edge - here’s hoping he’s taking some immune system boosters for that.
Taylor had absolutely no problems with JTFTW in Myrtle Beach, thought that live version was even better than the CD. In Ashville it was done a little differently with more guts & growl and the two people with me preferred that version.
He can do the song live just fine but because of the difficulty of the song there is no wiggle room if he has any lung or throat problems to cope with. Seems likely Taylor would have known that very well. Interesting that he has commented on stage that the song was pushed by Clive Davis both for the album and the single.
Cut him some slack folks - he’s doing just fine and puts on a show like no other any of us and those we spoke with had ever experienced.
I can’t wait for Elliott’s album.

Interesting article about payola LBB. I pretty much agree with it, I think it is a fairly silly set of laws.
dave - bonus tracks at target.
MJ may I kill Dave? Please?
Dave thanks a lot….pfffttt! How am I supposed to compete with RSF. :)

Wanna take a look inside Taylor’s tour bus? Yes, even a picture of his bunk!
Your welcome in advance LOL!

Holy Crap Taylor is doing Georgia for the Encore….
It sounds great on cell cert
Kudos to all who predicted he’s saving it for Atlanta. You were RIGHT ON !!
If only this performance had been recorded, we’d be able to compare it with his recorded version.
