GLAAD Can’t Make Up Their Mind on Adam Lambert, Plus Adam Booked on The View

Update: GLAAD has issued yet ANOTHER statement. The latest is in response to the news that Adam is booked for an appearance and performance on The View December 10. GLAAD says:

“ABC has taken a step towards fairness by inviting Adam Lambert to perform on The View. GLAAD has been advocating against the double standards that have been applied to Lambert as an openly gay performer. We thank community members and allies for voicing their concerns with ABC so that entertainers like Adam have the opportunity to be broadcast into living rooms across America.”

According to a tweet from Adam, he’ll appear on The View Thursday, December 10. The appearance, which will feature an interview and performance, will be pre-taped, due to a scheduling conflict (per Adam’s peeps). GLAAD is taking credit? I think Barbara Walters waved her big stick and got her way. via LA Times

Jarrett Barrios, GLAAD president, explains to the LA Times why the organization felt the need to keep clarifying their stance, and I have to say, I’m still left confused.   He claims the first statement was taken out of context. But that first, wishy washy statement had no criticism of ABC in it whatsoever. When GLAAD   got some heat, they ramped up the rhetoric, once and then twice.   via LA Times

GLAAD has released yet another statement on the Adam Lambert controversy, and it’s a complete turnaround from the first two statements they released yesterday.

Today’s statement:

‘We appreciate ABC’s commitment to gay and transgender inclusion in other programming,’ said Jarrett Barrios, President of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. ‘However, let us be clear that GLAAD remains steadfast in our assertion that Adam Lambert is being subjected to a double standard by ABC as an openly gay performer. We do not support ABC cancelling Adam Lambert’s past and future performances. We urge the community to reach out to ABC and express their concerns that Adam Lambert is being subjected to a double standard.’

Queerty has a pretty scathing critique of the way GLAAD handled the Adam controversy HERE, with quotes from GLAAD’s ever-changing prior statements on the controversy.

GLAAD must have gotten their asses kicked to have turned around so completely on the matter in such a short period of time…

I’m just hoping for really exciting New Years Eve news early next week.

I’m hoping he gets onto one of the big NYE shows, too. It would be great in terms of exposure for him. I like the sounds of the one with Elton John and Caty Perry! That would actually be cooler than NYRE, IMO!

This Adam experience is beyond a roller coaster ride. I’m amazed at how up and down my emotions go with the daily Adam news. I don’t think I have been this invested in a performer EVER!!

IA. I wanted to stay cool and refused to admit the obvious fact that I was invested, well, not until last night when I got Adam’s tweet that he would be the View and I couldn’t help but grin from ear to ear in an accounting class. The professor must have thought I was driven crazy by the numbers.

I’m not a fan of these controversies. I would have walked away if these were about any other singer. But the album is so good that I feel I have a solid core to root at and to go through all the craziness with Adam.

I had to admit my Adam compulsion when I realized I was anxious about leaving my computer for fear I would miss something important. SAD….

  • Chicagolaw:

Can someone explain to me how they can continue to boycott Adam on ABC after The View appearence? Won’t it look like they are just “picking and choosing” shows to cancel at that point? Or even worse, won’t it appear they are simply using Adam when it suites them for ratings (Barbara Walters Special, The View) while cutting him off randomly. I have heard a lot of people say that this View appearence is a one-time thing, but I don’t see how ABC can pull that off without losing any credibility they might have had.

    No.

    Absolutely!

ABC … credibility??? that train has left the station loooong ago.

  • adamized:

I have Adam’s CD through Amazon but that one doesn’t come with Master Plan. Could someone tell me which of the versions’s of FYE have that song on it? I’m addicted!

  • Mainegal:

adamized…the itunes deluxe. and I am obsessed with MP! vocals are killer! (as we would expect)

ETA – you can buy just the single off of it.

Both Lambert’s interview and performance will be pre-taped, and they say its because of a scheduling conflict, but maybe the network was afraid Adam would repeat his AMA performance as an f-you to the network — which would basically be the most awesome pop culture event of this decade. Oh well. [

mmb…..thanks for the link. loved the comments even more.
    esp. this one:

But look at how great he is taking this stress and pressure. Do you know anyone else who could stand this much heat? And he is doing it while plugging other artist’s work. He gushes about Lady Gaga who I never cared for but I am now starting to notice because of him. He urges us to listen to Kris Allen. I had all ready forgetten about him. He tells us of Allison Iraheta’s new song which to me sounded like Avil L. BUT I wouldn’t even had pulled it up to listen to it had he not brought it up. He tells us Pink wrote him a song and now I am buying Pink’s last album. The guy has influence. He may be the new kid in town but folks listen. And we all can’t wait to see what he does next.

Lol – though somehow I seriously doubt Adam would ever do that, at least not for a year or so ;-) He’s way too gracious and good about it all. But it would be awesome!

Well, the unofficial word is that it was really Barbara Walters’ weight that got him on The View, not ABC specifically. However, I’ve said since the cancellations were first announced that they made next to no sense – especially to cancel two late night appearances, which aren’t even regulated by the FCC guidelines. ABC has gotten a lot of flack for all of it, and right now I almost feel the whole thing is a game of “who will blink first” – they want an apology out of Adam, and a lot of press is saying ABC is more in the wrong. Now, their hypocricy is just continuing – they’ll keep using him for ratings, yet feign indignation at his “wild antics” by cancelling him from smaller shows (like Kimmel).

Argh – now if only fans of Pink, Gaga, Muse, etc would check out his album in turn. Must. Be. Patient…
