With Glee Season 5 on a totally wack timeline (It’s still spring 2013 in Glee land) nobody was expecting a Christmas special this year. But guess what. We’re getting one anyway! The episode is titled “Previously Unaired Christmas” which hints that the story takes place sometime in the past.
A few weeks ago, Ryan Murphy hinted on twitter, “Who wants to see Glee’s NEVER BEFORE AIRED Xmas special? Too hot for TV.” Hm.

Official Fox Summary
IT’S THE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL THAT NEVER WAS (UNTIL NOW) ON AN ALL-NEW “GLEE” THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5, ON FOX
Sue Sylvester introduces the episode as a Christmas special that FOX did not allow to air from last year. The members of New Directions audition for roles in McKinley’s living Nativity Scene. Meanwhile in New York, Rachel, Kurt and Santana work as Santa’s elves at a mall in the all-new “Previously Unaired Christmas” episode of GLEE airing on Thursday, Dec. 5 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (GLE-508) (TV-14 D, L)
And here’s how a Glee producer explains away the fact that in last year’s Christmas episode, Santana was not yet in NYC while Blaine and Kurt spent Christmas together. Also Rachel was on a cruise with her Dads!
@EliotLover Santana was visiting NYC in that episode, and Blaine stayed in Lima for Christmas. One of the reasons Fox never aired it.

Previously Unaired Christmas Song Spoilers
- Here Comes Santa Claus (Down Santa Claus Lane) (Rachel / Kurt & Santana)
- Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree (New Directions)
- Mary’s Little Boy Child (Unique & Tina)
- The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late) (Rachel / Kurt / Santana & Cody)
- Love Child (Unique / Marley & Tina) (!!!)
- Away In A Manger (New Directions Featuring Rachel / Kurt & Santana)
The details:
- A character named Cody is an “extremely handsome and charming manipulator” but does not sing or dance. Also, an alcoholic shopping mall Santa will appear (TV Line)
- Kurt (Chris Colfer), Santana (Naya Rivera) and Rachel (Lea Michele) sing “Here Comes Santa Clause” in a New York shopping mall (If it takes place in the past, it can’t go further back than last season. Or maybe it’s some weird alternative universe? Notice Kurt isn’t wearing an engagement ring.)
- Chris Colfer tweeted, “Filming a very naughty Xmas scene with @BryceOJohnson and @WStanzler. Holiday costumes may be involved. Everyone follow them!” Bryce is an actor, and Wendy Stanzler is the episode director.
- Mark Salling is coming back as Puck for the episode
- Becca Tobin, Jenna Ushkowitz, Kevin McHale, Chord Overstreet, Dot-Marie Jones all tweeted from a special Saturday shoot that appears to involve a Nativity scene featuring a black baby. The song “Love Child” makes more sense now. See photos below.
- Ryan Murphy seems to be going for some “Bad Santa” vibe here.
UPDATE: Lots of onset photos from a Saturday shoot, suggest there will be a nativity scene in Lima involving a black baby Jesus (The song “Love Child” probably fits in here somewhere). Becca Tobin, Jenna Ushkowitz, Kevin McHale, Chord Overstreet, Dot-Marie Jones all tweeted from set. (Source)

There was a location shoot at a Burbank mall. Naya Rivera, Lea Michele and Chris Colfer were dressed as elves and sang and danced to “Here Comes Santa Claus.” At one point, they interact with a Santa Claus–A child sits on Santa’s lap and shares a Christmas wish. When Santa appears drunk, Santana steps in. “Kurt and Rachel give her an intro, and then she kicks open the door and walks in like a gangsta” (JustSweenyTodd), whom I will assume is the drunken Santa casted for the episode. Food is thrown on them at the end of the episode, according to another fan who was there.
