Idol Billboard Update for Issue 12/27/08 – Cook goes Gold, Jordin Sparks Certified Platinum
Here is your Amerian Idol Billboard update, lovingly compiled by moi, right HERE.
Highlights this week include David Cook’s new album going gold after 4 weeks. Plus, Jordin Sparks‘ album, Jordin Sparks is finally certified platinum by the RIAA. Congrats Jordin!
- David Cook, David Cook stays in the Top 10 at #10 for the fourth week, and has also gone GOLD, selling a healthy 103.5K this week and 582K so far. Excellent! Nice B-day present for Cookie… Richard Rushfield has a nice round-up of David’s progress so far, HERE. David’s 4 weeks is the longest run in the Top 10 by an American Idol winner since Carrie Underwood and David Cook is currently the 15th best selling Idol album of all time (edit: actually, it’s 16th, but it’s going to hopscotch over a few Idol albums fairly quickly)
- Note the cute little black triangle next to “Time of My Life”–that means it has been officially certified platinum by the RIAA. Like “Time of My Life,” David’s current single “Light On” is proving to be very resilient, continuing to inch it’s way up the charts. The song is played during the Idol commercial featuring Cook–that’s got to be helping. It moves 56-48 on Hot 100, 66-60 on Hot 100 Airplay, 39-32 on Pop 100, 35-32 on Pop 100 Airplay, 25-23 on Mainstream Top 40, 11-11 on Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks, 60-48 on Hot Digital Songs and re-enters Hot Digital Tracks at #45.
- David Archuleta, David Archuleta is on its way to gold. The album had another solid week, moving from #19 to #21 (but a 6% increase) and selling 59K, for a total of 430K.
- Archie’s platinum-selling “Crush” continues to move the downloads. It’s #37 on the Hot Digital Songs chart, down from #32 last week, selling 28K for a total of 1.1M. His new single “A Little Too Not Over You” should begin impacting the charts after the holidays. Then we’ll watch it’s inevitable climb up the charts. Just like his labelmate Jordin Sparks, successful singles should keep David’s album moving at a steady pace next year.
- Speaking of Jordin Sparks. Girl has gone platinum! Yes, it’s official–Jordin Sparks the album has been officially certified platinum by the RIAA. Congratulations Jordin! This week, it sold 5K for a total of 970K (she’s shipped 1M, not sold 1M)
- The charts are shorter than usual this week–the holiday decimation of the recurrent charts is nearly complete. There are two chart debuts, and they’re both on the country charts. Carrie Underwood’s “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” debuts at #54 and Josh Gracin’s “Telluride” debuts at #58 on the Hot Country Songs chart.
You can find the weekly updates tabbed in the header above. Once the week is over, I retire the chart to the Historical Charts tab, also above. If you haven’t peeked in there, I link to various charts, including Idol ratings and schedules. I just posted an updated chart of Idol first week numbers there, so check it out.

That is not correct, Kelis is no longer with Jive, because Jive dropped Kelis.
Wait?! Nick Lachey is still with a major label? Did he have any platinum records? Am confuzzled by that seemingly random fact. I know labels have different reasons for signing and keeping artists and all, but sometimes those reasons are not apparent or crystal clear.
MJ, heard New England was socked by the storm. Glad LO guided you home.
There are a lot of factors involved. If the label can keep costs down for a project, the artist doesn’t have to move as many units to be deemed successful. Jive is rumoured to be very good at stretching promo budgets and being frugal (this all came out during the Barry/Clive thing).
Anyway, Nick’s last album was certified Gold, debuted number 2 on Billboard, had it’s debut single go to #6 on the Hot 100 and it’s follow-up go to #1 on the Hot Dance Airplay. His new album is supposed to be out in Feb, 2009.
Thanks to everyone who answered my questions regarding Jordin, Jive and other artists!
This is all very interesting! If it’s true that Jordin and her dad held out in order to sign with Jive, this also was a very smart move!
JudyOhio: A song has to stay in the top 40 for 20 weeks to go recurrent. That’s why Magic Rainbow managed to go recurrent on HAC (20 weeks on before it was removed), but not Top 40 (18 weeks on, I think).
Depends on if they purge the song or not. It’ll likely stay at 40 tomorrow, so it’ll remain on the chart this week and next week, whether it drops below 40 or not. Then next Sunday, if it’s below 40 they may purge it, or they may leave it on there. Really depends. It’s 2 weeks to recurrency. I’d like it to get there, but it doesn’t look like it will. The year-end countdowns may keep it afloat, but who knows. Really, recurrency does only one thing for a song–allows it to appear on recurrent charts. Radio stations more often play recurrents years later than non-recurrents (simply because a song that stays on the chart longer is more recognizable period), but a song that missed recurrency by one or 2 weeks probably has just a good of a shot of getting later airplay than a song that hit the recurrent mark. And there are huge hits that did hit recurrency that are never heard again because they’re simply out of date.
Also, mediabase recurrents are different than recurrents measured by BDS (which Billboard uses). Some songs make recurrent on one and not the other. Crush is at 34 this week on BDS, with 18 weeks on the chart. It could make recurrent there.
Billboard 200 actual numbers finally leaked. I think this is all of the Idols on it:

I hope we get BB200 at some point next week because between Ken B. being off and no HDD it could get ugly.
Wow LO is #38 on iTunes. I think that’s the highest it’s been in quite some time. Fly little light, fly!!! Fly like a magic rainbow!
I knew that I was going to manage to miss one.
Next week, numbers could be hard to get. Doesn’t bode well that it took until late in the day on Saturday to get the billboard numbers. I’m trying not to think about it. At least there will be, you know, Christmas with the happy small children running around, overly hyped up on sugar and toys, to distract from the (potential) lack of numbers.
