Idol Bits and Pieces
A couple of recent Items from the Hollywood Reporter
I think the headline of this article is a little misleading…
Fox’s ‘Idol’-ized Emmycast demo-lished
I mean, it’s not like Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick produced as they originally planned (they eventually bowed out, claiming they had too much work on their plates). And, host Ryan Seacrest barely took the stage during the entire telecast. Nevertheless, This year’s Emmy telecast was one of the lowest rated evah:
According to early Nielsen data, the three-hour show hosted by “Idol’s” Ryan Seacrest posted the lowest numbers ever for the awards show franchise among adults 18-49 despite being touted as a hipper revamp fronted by a young-skewing host. The 4.3 rating/11 share in the young demographic was down 17% from last year, when NBC carried the ceremony in August.
Things didn’t look much brighter in total viewers, where the Emmys attracted 13.1 million, the show’s smallest audience since 1990. That ceremony, also on Fox, drew 12.3 million viewers.
In Boston, the Emmys competed with both a Red Sox game and Sunday Night football on NBC…
Mike Darnell, Fox’s so-called “reality guru” busted a myth at a Bafta event Thursday night:
During the discussion, Darnell dispelled as a “myth” the popular notion that Fox didn’t pick up “American Idol” until News Corp. chief Rupert Murdoch and his daughter Elizabeth got involved.
According to Darnell, by the time the Murdochs intervened, “Idol” had already been picked up after an impressive pitch by creator Simon Fuller.
Oh well, it made for good copy while the story lasted…
And this last bit is just funny…
…Ryan Seacrest knows what it takes to be in the public eye. Now the ultimate host and longtime Crest and Scope fan is sharing the feeling of confidence that comes from having fresh breath and a white smile as he hosts the Crest + Scope “Smile Bright in the Spotlight” search. To kick off his yearlong campaign with Crest Extra White plus Scope toothpaste, Scope White rinse and Glide Whitening plus Scope flavor floss, Ryan is calling for consumers to visit http://www.SmileSpotlight.com for a chance to put their smile confidence to the ultimate test: The contest winner will become the official Miss/Mister People’s Choice, presenting trophies onstage at the People’s Choice Awards.

I’m not sure that the low ratings have anything to do with the host or anything else. There are WAY too many awards shows on these days, and except for People’s Choice, are voted on by industry insiders. I think today’s youth (and the rest of us lol) are getting too jaded to care about awards given to Hollywood by Hollywood.
If anything it reflects that ratings are down across the board for the networks period! People aren’t watching TV like they used to when it was the ONLY free entertainment. Plus Fox is not in every single city in the U.S., like CBS and ABC; correct?
Mention of Jennifer hudson in SATC:

Could we keep posts on topic please? The JHud post belongs in Today’s headline thread. Thank you.
Since I am such a TV junkie, the Emmys are my Oscars and I watch them religiously. Since I live in New England, I was torn this year between them and the Red Sox – and that was no ordinary game because it was against those DAMN YANKEES!!! I had the Emmys on TV and the Sox on computer and to top it all off THEY LOST! I’m sure I wasn’t the only one with this problem and that might have been something that contributed to the low ratings.
Another one, I suspect, is that TV people don’t know how to put on an awards show. This year’s “theatre in the round” bombed big time and the only two things that made me laugh (other than some of the winners) was the opening song by the FAMILY GUY duo and the writers’ into clips for the comedy shows — those are a scream every year! Other than that, the baseball game was definitely more interesting.
Hopefully, someone in TV land will get a clue and spend more time in putting together something that entertains as well as honors the best in TV. So far, they are striking out worse than the Sox.
Carry on!
