Idol Bits And Pieces: Kris Allen, Carrie Underwood, Susan Boyle, David Cook and Bday Boy David Archuleta

Kris Allen is set to perform on December 30th at B.B. Kings Blues club at the Mirage in Las Vegas. The next night he’s scheduled to appear with Allison Iraheta on the FOX network’s Billboard New Years Eve Live special, where he’s set to sing a couple of tunes. More info on the BB King’s gig HERE.

David Archuleta turns 19 today and amidst the massive birthday wishes, he tweeted a photo of his ice cream cake. Coldstone Creamery. YUM!   David was also an answer to a Jeopardy question today. Coincidence? Hm.

Speaking of David, Archie’s pal, David Cook held a twitter party for his fans today while he waited to board a plane. On the “vibe” of the new songs he’s writing for his next album, David says, “So far, lyrically, it’s all a bit more tongue-in-cheek. more urgent musically.” David is set to perform at the Pechanga Resort and Casino, Temecula, CA. on December 30 and 31. More info HERE.

Carrie Underwood tells her fan club about her best gift from Santa: “I think you all know what Santa left under the tree for me this year…a fiance! Woo hoo!” Speaking of her recent engagement to Hockey player Mike Fisher, she’s happy her cute little rat terrier, Ace “is finally going to have a dad! We all couldn’t be happier!!!” Aw. Read more about Carrie’s Christmas at US magazine.

Scary Stuff: Susan Boyle spotted two trespassers lurking around her property in Scotland as she was looking out her window. The men fled as soon as they saw her. Meanwhile, Susan has already sold almost 3 million copies of her debut album, I Dreamed a Dream. By the end of this week, it should be the top selling CD of 2009. More at the New York Daily News.

I normally don’t gift music since it’s hard to predict tastes unless something is requested. I took a chance and gave my nephew the Kris Allen CD as a stocking stuffer. He’s a 20 something professional and we have similar tastes in a lot of things. His reaction? ‘WOW! This guy is really good. Thank you ‘ ¦ THANK YOU! Do you like him too?’ It made me feel good that I took the risk.

That’s funny. Because David Cook has nothing new out at the moment, I gave two of my young cousins copies of CDs from his opening acts: GRO and The Script. Well, they were immediately declared cool and I was crowned very hip! I was so pleased. Thank you, David, for introducing me to these groups and giving me some nice cred with the “youngsters” in my family.

‘So far, lyrically, it’s all a bit more tongue-in-cheek. more urgent musically.’

So…I’m thinking…a little less Declaration…a little more Kiss on the Neck.
    YEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!

    I think
his metaphorical, wordy lyrics are what make him unique.

I so agree with this (about David Cook). Past lyrics suggest he has a poet’s instinct for original turns of phrase and quirky word use, and another talent that isn’t all that common–the ability to turn a lyric on its head to reverse its meaning in a way that makes it so much more interesting than a more straightforward, concrete lyric can do. He did it in KOTN, but it threads throughout his other albums much more so than on DCTR.

I think his fans are chomping at the bit for him to let loose and just be himself lyrically and musically. This fan is.

I was just re-reading the announcement for Kris’s BB King gig…. reopening the club at 11 PM, which means a start time of 11:30/Midnight… 2:30AM/3:00 AM eastern…. my first true ‘test’…. I don’t think I can stay up and follow the tweets and still go to work the next day. Of course, there is always that ‘work from home’ chip that I can cash in. Or maybe take a nap and just wake up extra early?? It’s times like these that I wish the whole country was on one time zone. So what if it gets dark out at 3 PM :D

  • Zarita:

And then of course there’s his pre-Idol stuff, which is also less ’serious’ and more fun to listen to, imo. Not to mention all the covers they did on tour, which were upbeat and lively.

You think his pre-Idol stuff is less “serious”? With all the bleeding and breaking and crawling? Silver contains drug use. Hold is about (unplanned, unwanted) pregnancy. AC is a more rocking, less polished Permanent. Balance is about his grandfather’s death (no clue where I heard that). The entirety of Analog Heart is the progress of a breaking relationship. I don’t have the link for it anymore, but someone on DCO a while back composed all the themes that run throughout David’s writing, from Axium until DCTR. I think ‘change’ might have been the theme with the highest tally, or at least close to the top, but none of the recurrent themes were really what one would call peppy. I’ve always thought that compared to his previous stuff, DCTR was practically cheery. Heroes is so positive it straddles the line of being cheesy.

But maybe I just have a different definition of serious than you. I know I’ve got a different definition of tongue-in-cheek than some people, since they thought of Feed Your Ego and Porcelain and KOTN as examples, and I never really thought of those as tongue-in-cheek, just angry (maybe not KOTN so much).

None of this is a complaint for me. Compared to the other rock music I listen to, David’s music IS cheery. He writes what he feels, if he feel the need to expel negative feelings in music, then yes, his music is going to be serious. And didn’t he say once “I don’t take myself seriously, but I take my music very seriously”? I don’t expect that to change. Though I am excited to hear this “tongue-in-cheek” thing, because I’m having a hard time picturing it, tbh. We know he’s a smart-ass, I just never really expected to see that in his lyrics.

    Word to all of this.

My deepest desire as a DC fan is that, whatever direction he decides to go in musically on DCTR2, he returns to his instinctive lyrical phrasing. It wasn’t always perfect pre-idol, but it was his knack with words that really turned me on to him, especially once it was confirmed that his primary role in the song writing team on Axium was the lyrics.

I’m excited by the implied different direction musically, because that is exactly what he needs leading on from DCTR, more musical dynamism. But, IMO, the man has a poet’s soul and I absolutely curse whoever it was that told him to make things more simple, post -idol.

THANK YOU. Yes. Kiss on the Neck was a diamond in the rough for me and I think that seeing the tour response for that one probably gave him confidence that he could play hard, have fun and deliver crafty lyrics. We all sang along!!! Can’t wait to hear more. I love it all, but David and the Anthemic will be more cohesive and so much more fun with this next album. Fingers crossed!

  • Mtlfan:

I’m looking forward to DC next album. Curious to see his ‘cheek-in-tongue’.

Great gig for Kris. That will be the first gig in solo for the band. Crossing my fingers for videos and looking forward to hearing a new song live. The last time he sang “Is it over”, it was amazing; he keeps getting better and better in my opinion.

    Very happy for Carrie!

  • I sang the nationall anthem @ the Brewers game n May, the Bucks game n October & the Packer 2day. All 3 teams had victories- just sayin

If I misread DG, I apologize. It just sounds like the same old same old to me, but maybe I was wrong.

  • JosieX:

there’s no denying that he sounds arrogant and conceited, or at least clueless, in many of his tweets and his interviews. He could learn some communication skills if he’s going to be in the public eye. Of course his fans and friends will cut him some slack, but the public won’t in general.

I am a fan, but I am certainly not a lovesick schoolgirl with no rational thought process left and I don’t think he sounds arrogant and conceited or clueless in his tweets and interviews. I’ve watched him in many dozens of interviews, some here, mostly elsewhere. I don’t see him as a master class orator, that’s not really his thing. But in fact, I think there is no denying that he engages interviewers, who would generally be likely to be not far off neutral to start, with warmth and sincerity, to quite apparent good effect. This is not particularly surprising considering all the reports we’ve seen from tour attendees who thought they hated him but came away gushing about how sweet he is once they talked to him. He’s getting better at communication in the age of the sound byte and that’s good, but arrogant/conceited/clueless are not attributes that I believe are credible descriptions of him.

ITA! Count me in as one who was excited by that hint that Cook might be powering up the verbal twists and turns–one of my favorite parts of his music!

    Happy Birthday, David Archuleta!

Season 7’s runner-up, David Archuleta, celebrated his birthday on December 28th. In the year and a half since the 2008 finale, David has released two albums and took part in five tours!

Just six months after David’s run on American Idol, he released his self-titled debut album, which peaked at No. 2 on three different Billboard charts and was certified Gold. The album included his hit single ‘Crush’ and his second single ‘A Little Too Not Over You’ which David co-wrote. This October, David released a holiday CD entitled Christmas from the Heart. The album includes 12 Christmas songs covered by David and one original song, ‘Melodies of Christmas,’ that he co-wrote.

The summer following the Season 7 competition, David headed out on tour with the rest of the Top 10 for the American Idols LIVE! 2008 tour. Six months later, he spent one month traveling the country on his solo tour. This summer (and part of fall), David joined Demi Lovato on a nationwide tour. And up until last week, David was performing shows across the nation on his ‘Christmas from the Heart’ tour.

These accomplishments, paired with David’s strong fan base, have earned the star a number of awards. In 2008, David won two Teen Choice Awards ‘“ one for Most Fanatic Fans and one for Best Smile. The following year, David won three Teen Choice Awards ‘“ one for Breakout Artist, another for Music: Love Song (for ‘Crush’ ), and a final award for Music Tour (for his tour with Demi Lovato). He also won the Music Rising Star ALMA Award in 2009. Hitting it big on the charts, David has collected four No. 1 hits on the Billboard charts and landed on Billboard’s Decade End and Year End lists which were released two weeks ago.

With a new book on the horizon, Chords of Strength, and an album scheduled for a 2010 release, there are no signs of slowing down from this Idol alumnus.

    Happy Birthday, David!

David Archuleta has grown up in front of our very eyes. View photos of David performing at the Season 7 finale at Nokia Theater.

Cosigning all of this. And I’m also getting in line with the peeps who want to smack the “simplify your lyrics” advice giver upside the head. Sometimes Dave’s word usage cracks me up, but a lot of the times I find it kinda fascinating. I mean, musically urgent? What connotation of the word urgent is he going with there? Driving beat, faster tempo, something that grabs you by the hand and pulls you along with it as it races to the finish line? Anyway, the tongue in cheek thing sounds cool. I like snarky Dave and he doesn’t do that lyrically very often, so this should be fun.

  • oceana:

You think his pre-Idol stuff is less ’serious’ ? With all the bleeding and breaking and crawling?

I guess I didn’t put that well. Yes some serious themes, but to me, less angsty-sounding than some of the DCTR songs. Sounds more like Alt Rock to me. Some of my favorite songs are on AH. He gets criticized for singing ballads like LO and CBTM, while I think the earlier stuff is more current sounding than those two songs, and some of those AH songs could be alt rock radio hits today, imo (with a little cleaning up).

    Yes.

The following Twitter exchange between Jackie Castro and Brooke White suggests that they and Archie (and perhaps Jason since he’s Jackie’s bro) will be reuniting some time in the near future. Does anyone know what they’re talking about?

I guess they’re meeting up for New Years…

DavidArchie: Well time at home for the holidays was nice! Had a great time with the family! Texas, here I come. But I’ll be back soon Haha.

These descriptions of how Danny comes across (not how he is necessarily, but how he comes across) have been expressed on this blog many times by many people, so this is indeed a credible description in many people’s minds. Some look at him and see smirking, others see warm and engaging. Some hear flippancy in his jokes, others hear innocent and funny. It’s in the eye/ear of the beholder.

Ozarka – Jason is getting married in Texas this Saturday.

Here’s a link to a wedding registry for Jason and Mandy.

It is thought that David, who’s performing in Texas Thursday, will stay for the wedding. And it sounds from the tweets you posted earlier that Brooke will be attending also.

How refreshing Carrie is! Glad she didn’t say Santa had left her a ring, but her fiance. Her attitude and perspective are definitely in the right place.

I’m sure Carrie doesn’t care about the ring, since she can probably buy the whole store.
I’m waiting for her tour to go through Los Angeles so I can see her again. LA is still not on the list. What ??

Yeah, good thing I’m on the West Coast. Of course, when Kris has a concert on the Easy Coast, I have to hurry to get home from work.

I have to go to work too on Dec 31, but really, do they really expect us to do real work ? I thought that we are there just to hold the place up while the OTHER people go to their vacation ?

  • JosieX:

It’s interesting that you say that oceana, that’s very illuminating to me about the different way that we look at the world. With no disrespect to you or anyone else on the blog intended, the fact that many people on the blog have said a particular thing is not especially weighty to me as I make up my own mind as to what is credible. If we all have the same set of facts in front of us, I might find other people’s assumptions about what they mean to be interesting if they’re expressed with some eloquence, but I will decide for myself what I think those facts represent, if I feel able to reach a conclusion about it. And I hope I always respect everyone else’s right to do so. But it doesn’t speak to credibility for me.

  • oceana:

I think “credible” had a different connotation to me than it did to you. It usually means that the source isn’t credible, not the opinion given. So I thought you were saying that “I” wasn’t credible. But I see that you meant something else, that to you, the information wasn’t credible.

Don’t mean to split hairs, just can’t help dissecting the meaning of words. I don’t think of opinions as credible or not credible. They are just opinions, and therefore valid. Only facts can be credible or not credible. Or so my thinking goes.

I wasn’t trying to tell you how to feel, just defending myself against a charge (in my mind) that I was not a credible witness or source. I never said as a fact that Danny was this or that, I said that he comes across that way to some people. I clearly said that others see him as a warm and genuine guy. It cannot be said that how things appear to me is not credible. Only if I said it was a fact, could it be not credible. My feelings and impressions are credible, as are yours, as are everyone’s.

    ETA: Dictionary.com: credible means:
capable of being believed; believable: a credible statement

The thing is, I wasn’t trying to make you believe what I said, I didn’t expect or want you to feel the same way, I was saying how he appears and sounds to me. Either you believe that he really does come across that way to me, thus I made a credible statement, or you think I am fibbing, and I really don’t see him that way. So you are judging whether or not my words are credible.

I don’t mean to belabor it, but I love words and their meanings, and they really do mean different things to different people, thus we have dictionaries to try to help us understand each other.
