‘American Idol’ Goes Country

The producers of ‘American Idol’ have teamed up with CMT for a new reality competition show called ‘Can You Duet.’

In the tradition of those powerhouse duos, ‘Can You Duet’ is looking to launch an unknown singing duo into country music stardom. Duos can be made up of family members, friends, lovers or even strangers. The first auditions will be held January 12 in Nashville, with the first episode set to air on April 14. The winning duo receives a record label deal

7. CORPORATE-PRODUCED MUSIC

Carrie Underwood, Chris “Daughtry” Daughtry, Miley Cyrus aka Hannah Montana … is this what has become of music? What happened to the bands, the singer-songwriters that lived, breathed and, occasionally, died for their muse? It’s like “American Idol,” once just a boil on our TVs, has mutated into a pox. Carrie is no more country than Loretta Lynn is pop.

Westerly First Night celebration carries wishes for a better year

Chris Sligh, a finalist on the television program American Idol, and Ashley Cleveland, a two-time Grammy winner for best rock gospel album, were scheduled to perform Monday night. And while both are Christian performers, Jones said his main focus was to provide a family-friendly event.

“It’s just nice to have something positive,” Jones said. “So much of our culture is negative.”

    Happy New Year Everyone! :drunk_tb:
I suppose everyone is still in bed or nursing a hang over this morning!
Because of my old age, I found myself asleep at 8:30pm and awakened at 12:30am to turn the Tv off, lamenting that I had missed the falling ball! heh
I watched the Today Show this morning and there was a segment on the predictions on music for the coming year. I am not too sure who the gentleman was that was doing the predicting but towards the end of the interview, Matt Lauer asked about the future of AI. The man said that he predicted that this would be the downfall of American Idol this year….that Carrie and Kelly C were the only two successes that have come from that show, and that Jordan had a very disappointing launch. I thought…..wait a minute…have you ever heard of Chris Daughtry????Hello? There have been many success stories from that show….just goes to show that we all have a different opinion of what a success is. Am sure tiring of the negative media….sheesh! Pix

If Matt Lauer wanted to talk Ai, he should’ve just asked someone here at MJ’s. The man he did ask was obviously clueless! :)

FOR Desdemona–curiosity question: Are you an ABB fan??

Chrissey, I’m not sure - right now I can’t even think what ABB stands for. :(

Allman Brothers Band (from 100 years ago and still going strong). One of their (many) famous songs was titled “Desdemona”. It is such an unusual name I really thought you HAD to be a fan!!! I think it was written for one of the Brothers’ girlfriends. (Great song…)

Wow, some Taylor love in Manila. Sweet! I am just glad some some to realize his musicianship. Can’t take that away from him.

I watched some of the new years eve shows last night, soon turned over to a rerun. I did see Carrie, Jordin and Blake. I dont care much for the 3 songs off carrie’s new cd, not as good material as on the first cd, imo. I did like Tattoo, liked Blakes song ok but thought he was a little geeky in his interview lol.

American Idol going tues, wed and thursday on some weeks , does that reek of overkill? Also having just one day for the holleywood round tookind of stinks. They try to right one mistake and create others like thier going to change. Thurday night line up going against it next year the superbowl…Yes it will be the number 1 show.

I fell asleep and missed seeing Carrie, Jordin and Blake - any chance of a link to their performances? I was bummed that I missed it.

    Happy 2008 to everyone!

Thanks to MJ for allowing us into her home. I always come here for my Idol news and enjoy watching them blossom in their own directions.

I will be seeing Kelly, Carrie and Chris in concert in the next few months. Hope a few others make it here as well. I enjoyed Bucky and of course Taylor will always be my favorite.

I have a new BIG HD flatscreen (my first tv purchase in 13 years) so I am ready for AI. Don’t think I can stomach the bad auditions though. Sad that there is just one episode for Hollywood week. It will be interesting to see how the show goes this year!

I’d like to see Blake’s performance if anyone has a link. I did hear Break Anotha on the radio while heading out to a NYE party last night!

Rickey has all three performances up.

I thought Carrie did the best of the three. She’s so professional now and got to showcase three of her songs. Blake came in second because he put on quite the performance and clearly clicks with his band members (the move where they all jumped off the drum stage was a little twee though).

Sadly to say, Jordin came in a distant third. I’m not sure why they bothered to pay for a back-up band for her because she didn’t connect with them at all. It’s like they weren’t even there (for at least Blake and Jordin, the bands were just for show anyway…they made them use the musical tracks from the CDs for logistical reasons). What they should have done is hired a pretend back-up singer so that it wouldn’t look so jarring when Jordin’s voice is obviously singing, but she is just standing around waiting for the part where she sings “Oo-oo” over it. She looked awkward. I seem to recall she was a better performer on AI.

I’m not commenting on the songs themselves, because we’ve talked about them before and all three seemed to mostly stay in tune. So, I’m judging last night based mainly on how they performed. Others can use other measuring sticks. I’m just explaining mine.

I agree with you about the 3 performances, Kirsten. Carrie sounded good although I think she’s still a little stiff. She looked good, though. I thought Blake’s song sounded the best I’ve heard of his performances. I noticed the same thing about Jordin and it just seemed strange that she was singing over herself.

Did anyone see Mariah Carey? Yikes! She came out in a Britney type bikini which someone should have told her was a big mistake. :ohmy_tb:

Here’s the link to Blake’s performance:

I missed Carrie. I’ll go to Rickey’s to see it. Thanks for the heads up, Kirsten.

I actually missed Blake’s too, but had the program recorded and caught it today. I did catch Jordin last night. I enjoyed Blake’s performance more, but I know I’m biased.

I really enjoyed FOB doing “Beat It.” That was fun. :)

Happy New Year to everyone! :)

Dante, I’m a little jellus of your new teevee. Glad you are enjoying so many concerts!

    ETA: Loved Blake’s plaid scarf.

I have watched all three now, and for me Blake was the best! He is fun to watch and even though that isn’t my favorite song of his, I thought he did a great job. Carrie and Jordin have the voices but just are boring to me. Maybe I will change my mind after seeing Carrie live but she seems robotic.

pj - just remember I am lots older than you so I have been waiting for a long long time for the big TV…..now I just need a treadmill to go in front of it so I can get in supershape to see my upcoming concerts.

Does anyone ever go to chat anymore?

I will be in chat….just in case
