Don’t believe the rumors: Pia Toscano doesn’t actually have a record deal yet. But she’s still hoping to parlay her time on American Idol into a successful music career. “I have been in the studio and we’re working on finding the perfect sound, ” she told EW after Wednesday’s finale. “I don’t want to rush it and just throw something out there and ruin everything I built up on the show. I am working with some amazing producers. I have been doing some stuff with [producers] Rodney Jerkins, Roc Mafia and Harvey Mason Jr. I met them through the show and I don’t think I would be working with such amazing people if it wasn’t for the show.”

“Extra” caught up with “American Idol” contestant Haley Reinhart on the red carpet and asked her about preparing to go onstage if finalist Lauren Alaina’s vocal chord problems prevented her from singing.

“I had somebody come up to me tell me what her condition was, ” explained Reinhart. “They didn’t know if she could sing or not. They asked me to do it and said to pick out some tunes I already did. It was an honor that they asked me; they never did this for somebody else on the show.”

‘American Idol’ Predictions Results: Scotty Rewards Our Faith

And, after a dismal season of prognosticating in which none of our experts could come within Skoal-spittin’ distance of .500, we finally all got it right for once. (Even if it feels like getting one of those participation trophies kids get these days just for showing up.)

“The ‘American Idol’ finale Wednesday night was super entertaining and full of little surprises — none of which included Scotty McCreery’s taking of the ‘Idol’ crown, ” said “Idol” blogger MJ Santilli. “That Scotty would have confetti raining down on his head when all was said and done seemed to be a foregone conclusion. Even Lauren, who had wanted the win so bad, didn’t seem fazed.”

Watch Kelly Clarkson conquer New York City

But unlike those three, I ignored my spot in the VIP section to belly up to the stage because Kelly! Clarkson! Was! Performing! And yes, I am dorky enough to visually show you just how close I was to my ultimate “American Idol” as she served up a sensational smattering of songs.

This was no “oh, here are three performances, thanks so much, buh-bye.” Kelly put on a legit concert last night as she rattled through “Since U Been Gone, ” “Walk Away, ” “Behind These Hazel Eyes” and nine other hits over the course of 90 minutes.

Exclusive: Why Cheryl Cole Was Dropped From X Factor

“Everyone is freaking out and it’s all a bit of a mess, ” a source close to Girls Aloud singer Cole, 27, told Us Weekly Wednesday after news of the switch surfaced.

Though Internet reports claim Cole’s thick British accent was a possible reason for the switch, a source tells Us show creator Cowell was more concerned with his panel’s chemistry.

“Throughout the whole decision making process, Simon was really torn between Cheryl and Nicole. He absolutely loved Nicole, really felt like she was the right one, but also knew his chemistry with Cheryl had been great before in the U.K. He finally decided on the more comfortable option and chose Cheryl, ” a source close to Scherzinger tells Us of Cowell and Cole, who cojudged The X Factor’s U.K. installment.

Later, says the Scherzinger source, the mogul felt Cole’s appointment was “a mistake.”

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So was it hard to be away last season?
MARY MURPHY: Well, yeah I’m not going to lie to you. It was really difficult to be away. I didn’t realize how difficult it would be for me, especially watching the show. I could only watch it a couple times, and I had such major disagreements with the judges. [Laughs] I was sitting at home yelling at the TV. I can remember one in particular was a tap dancer named Melinda and everybody was going off on her about how bad her salsa was. And I was sitting there [saying], “That’s the best salsa that’s ever been on the show!” [Laughs] I was just like, this is absurd. I went to the finale, [and] I just had to let her know.
