Jordin Sparks: I Like My Curves

Jordin Sparks didn’t just win American Idol last week – she won a lifelong battle to accept herself.

“I think it really helped boost her self-esteem and made her realize she’s beautiful as she is,” her grandmother, Pam Weidmann, tells PEOPLE for its new issue. Jordin’s mom, Jodi, says of her daughter’s May 23 victory: “It was huge to see her confidence level grow. … She’s standing taller now.” ….

Illness idles an Idol
Review: After saying he’s not feeling well, Bo Bice cuts short his show in Anaheim.

It was obvious from the time that Bo Bice took the House of Blues Anaheim stage at 9:10 p.m. that something was wrong. At just about any concert given by a seasoned performer, the artist busts out of the gate with a song and saves the small talk for later. Bice looked tired and fumbled with his acoustic guitar for what seemed like a minute or so before launching into his first song, the Southern rock-styled “I’m Gone.”……..

‘Heart’ a well-sung, silky smooth tribute to Tony Bennett

…Lest anyone think the Queens-born Anthony Benedetto has peaked, think again. The 80-year-old singer earned his 14th Grammy Award this year, he’s just released an album of duets with the likes of U2’s Bono and country’ superstar Tim McGraw, has nine concerts scheduled this month, and he was a featured performer on the finale of Fox’s No. 1-rated singing show, “American Idol,” two weeks ago. Perhaps the man who summed up Bennett’s career best was Sinatra, who told Life magazine in 1965, “For my money, Tony Bennett is the best singer in the business … He’s the singer who gets across what the composer has in mind and probably a little more.”…

No dice for Bice, but will Yamin lead an ‘Idol’ parade to town?

What becomes of an American who wants to be your idol but fails? We’re now finding out.
Bo Bice was to become the latest “American Idol” castoff to visit Tucson — until his show at the Rialto was canceled Tuesday due to poor ticket sales.

But it’s not lonely at the bottom. Earlier this year, “American Idol” lesser-than Chris Daughtry played The Rock, and also-ran Elliott Yamin will hit the Rialto on June 19.
Only time will tell whether being a performer on a reality show like “Idol” is really that much different in the long run from being a participant on a reality show like “The Real World.” If your talent is questionable, the only real distinction now is that with “Idol” you can tour venues for a little while….

‘AMERICAN IDOL’ IN BLACK AND WHITE: Article points out Billboard disparity between pop- and R&B-flavored winners.

An article by Rodney Thrash (rthrash@sptimes.com) of the St. Petersburg Times points out the record sales gap between the finalists of “American Idol” who record pop records, and those who sing R&B.

“Except for Taylor Hicks, last year’s top vote-getter, the white winners have outsold the black ones,” writes Thrash. “To be sure, Ruben Studdard and Fantasia Barrino have done well for themselves. They’ve gained entry into a world that, without ‘Idol,’ would have been inaccessible. But their success has been confined to a narrower audience than that of more successful Idol alums.”……

ROCK STAR: TARA SLONE

MUSIC REVIEWS: Dolores O’Riordan, Paris Bennett, The Cripple Lilies

Paris Bennett sometimes seems destined to be a pop music queen on her debut “Princess P,” but too often she’s in search of an appropriate kingdom and dodgy on just what kind of ruler she would make.

Bennett, an 18-year-old also-ran from the fifth season of “American Idol,” has immeasurable potential. She’s got dynamic range and a booming, soulful voice. And given her stature — she’s 4-foot-11 — and proclivity for wearing a tiara, the singer stands out from the pack for more than just her voice.

It wouldn’t be worth noting that she had even been on “Idol” except that some of “Princess P’s” shortcomings seem directly linked to the machinations of the show. “Idol” contestants are forced to prove their diversity, and Bennett is bent on doing the same on her debut. Electric guitars pointlessly slice into the fiery R&B mix of first single “Ordinary Love,” apparently proving her rock mettle, and the singer needlessly updates the Angels’ classic hit “My Boyfriend’s Back” (though Bennett’s conclusion, “You’ve officially been princessed,” is a cute touch)……..

West Bay Opera shows why ‘The Merry Widow’ is still alive and kicking

LAST WEEK, I watched the finals of the “American Idol.” After two hours of bizarre costumes, hip thrusting, flashing lights, prancing into the audience, high-pitched screaming of mostly incomprehensible lyrics, a new “American Idol” was born, with all the attention, power and pelf that goes with it.
The following weekend I reviewed the West Bay Opera’s production of Franz Lehar’s famed operetta “The Merry Widow” at the Lucie Stern Theatre in Palo Alto. The show was first produced more than 100 years ago and is still alive and kicking.

So that made me wonder, to which of these two styles of music will our descendants be listening 100 years from now? With richly modulated baritones, tenors and contraltos, beautiful bell-like excursions into the vocal stratosphere by the sopranos, the nuanced modulations and rich harmonic structures, I would put my money on Franz Lehar…

I got those Kelly links in the mail from someone at AOL last night, and meant to post them out front. Thanks for the reminder! :).

Frankly, I was curious as to why AI had Elliott back where he is not signed by any of that group. It occurred to me that Elliott’s signed that jingle deal with Oscar Mayer who will be sponsoring AI next year. Could be a reason?

Of course, Elliott generally spoke highly of AI and was always giving them credit. I bet they liked that.

I hope TPTB don’t snub #2 from Season 6 next season on AI.

Taylor Hicks sold another 3,000 units…a 50% uptick. That’s about average for a AI appearance.

Hmmmmmmm. It is my understanding that 1000 cd’s would ‘move’ as part of his endorsement deal with a real estate developer selling lots in Alabama. If that transaction occured last week that would mean he received insignificant sales benefit from the AI appearance. In any event it is a poor showing.

Interesting that they review the audience more than the show.

Interesting too that the audience appears to be the typical AI audience, predominately female and — dare I say? — of the Mate persuasion, attending multiple concerts in various states, which of course earned the Mates some derision.

    Best of luck to Bo.

  17. 67 NOLA May 31st, 2007 at 6:12 pm

squish, Bo is working on a sophomore CD. I posted 2 of the songs above.

As far as touring, Bo has never stopped touring. He was in the middle of a concert the other night when he fell ill.

BTW, as I read here at mj’s:

Bo Bice and Constantine Maroulis from Season 4 are both working on new albums. Bo is recording the album with country producer Frank Liddell, and features Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell, Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman, legendary session guitarist Waddy Wachtel and bluegrass icon David Grisman. It features songs co-written with A.J. Croce (son of Jim Croce) and Chris Tompkins (Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats”). Bo wrote 31 songs for the album and is narrowing down the list to 10-12.Rumor has it that Bo has left RCA. No word on what label will release the CD. It looks like Bo has gone back to his Southern rock roots with a vengeance and is doing his own thing. It makes me think that it’s NOT RCA, but we shall see…

Season four’s other rocker, #2 finisher Bo Bice, is also prepping an album for later this year: his yet-untitled sophomore release. His 2005 debut, The Real Thing, featured assists from Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger and former Evanescence member Ben Moody that were brokered by Bice’s label (see “Intestines, ‘Idol,’ Baby And Bon Jovi Helped Inspire Bo Bice’s Debut”). The longhaired Southern rocker says he called the shots this time around.
The album, which Bice is recording with noted country producer Frank Liddell (Faith Hill, Dixie Chicks), features the music hound’s wish list of famed session masters. “I was throwing around ideas of the people I wanted to play on it,” Bice said. “And I was like, ‘Yeah, sure, these guys will play on my album. Right!’ ” But a few phone calls landed him Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell — who Bice met a decade ago when he delivered a package of Christmas CDs to Leavell’s house — as well as Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman, legendary session guitarist Waddy Wachtel (Keith Richards, Tom Waits) and bluegrass icon David Grisman.
“It’s a star-studded cast, and I’m the only one on there who’s not famous,” the ever-humble Bice joked. “I picked and co-wrote the songs that if I was a guy who would be spending my hard-earned money buying an album I would want to hear.” That means original back-to-basics Southern rock and country-tinged singer/songwriter tunes co-written with A.J. Croce (son of 1970s singer Jim Croce) and Chris Tompkins (Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats”).
Bice said he wrote 31 songs for the album and is narrowing down the list to 10-12 that will make the final cut, including four songs that are currently vying to be the first single.
“I didn’t have a lot to do with the first record,” said Bice, who took time off in late 2006 to have another surgery to finally correct a nagging intestinal blockage that hospitalized him 15 times last year. “It was very RCA and Clive [Davis]-driven. It was an excellent album, but it was a revolving door of one guy in this week, another guy the next. This time I was here for every aspect [of it], and I’m a lot more comfortable.”

The McPhee handwringing and conspiracy theories here are very funny. Thank you.

    RSF,
I too am amused and extend thanks to all.

    Poor, poor ***.

Kat didn’t appear at the finale because there’s basically no buzz around her whatsoever right now.
They brought Kellie back because she was like one of the staples of last season.
Taylor had to come back because he won.
    Daughtry speaks for itself
And Elliott had a sufficient amount of buzz around his record.
Kat’s album is kinda over and done with. She might be able to bring it back after Love Story picks up but I think it may be a lost cause. I still like her though.

I’m going to repost that record news as it’s own post…I think it was a mistake to bury it in last week’s billboard chart post.

Doesn’t look like Kat is too upset about album sales - I think she found her calling.

    Check this out about Paula:

    TMZ

    Page Six

Check out the audio of a leaked telephone call on Page Six. Paula has a meltdown over her ex-publicist.

I think this one is a front pager…heh.

Dangit, ***, give Boulder an early Christmas present and do Maxim already.

The link to your article seems to have disappeared, Lisa, although I did read it this morning. I don’t care if it’s a rodent - I still want a pet rat.

ETA: I’m not up on the credibility of Page Six and such, but does Paula really have Addison’s Disease?? If so, I might have to ease up on the gal…maybe she really isn’t drunk like she says…

I think this one is a front pager…heh.

This has been spreading like a disease in the media today. The leading edge of a meltdown perhaps? Or else another finger infection gone amuck.

There have been articles for years about Paula’s illness. She also toured when she had injuries which worsened them. I read recently that she had I believe it was 4 titanium plates in her neck, had 14 surgeries, etc. Shes always said shes in pain constantly and on a lot of meds. I dont know why the media keeps the “drunken” thing going with her since they print these articles about her illness. She has said repeatedly she doesnt drink at all.

I’m using Bon Jovi as the related link, lol. (Hope this is ok.):

MTV’s “Unplugged” reborn with Police, Bon Jovi

NEW YORK (Billboard) - MTV’s on-again, off-again “Unplugged” program will return in a big way this summer, with new episodes featuring the Police, Bon Jovi, Kenny Chesney, Mary J. Blige and John Mayer.

John Mayer!! The Police!!! I’m so excited! :)

ETA: Didn’t know that, WVIdol. Thanks for the info. :)

GLAD to see MTV’s unplugged is back. Excited about the Police, Bon Jovi, Mary and John Mayer. I have never seen Kenny Chesney on MTV so I don’t know what that is all about.
