Archuleta, Union hit D.C. to adopt foster-care issue

WASHINGTON à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Stormy weather wasn’t enough to keep some stars away from an important issue: foster care.

“I’m so glad that my hair is pulled back and shellacked abundantly,” Vivica Fox joked about the rainy, humid weather.

Fox joined actors Gabrielle Union and Terrence Howard and American Idol finalist David Archuleta for the gala, held in a dining room at the State Department.

Archuleta performed Imagine, a song that won him rave reviews during his time on Idol. But even after singing it plenty of times before, the bashful 18-year-old was still a little nervous à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ this time he played the piano and sang.

“I have never accompanied myself on Imagine,” he admitted. But the important thing is to “get the spirit of the song across.”

The weekly American Idol sales report

There’s not a whole lot of excitement in this week’s American Idol sales data from Nielsen SoundScan. The biggest debut is the digital-only Rock of Ages cast recording, featuring Constantine Maroulis, which entered at #34 on the digital albums chart and #193 on the Top 200.

Kellie Pickler continues to see increases for both her single, Best Days of Your Life, which should pass the half-million mark in a few weeks, and her self-titled album, which is nearing 250,000 units.

David Archuleta of American Idol Woos Washington

2008 American Idol runner-up David Archuleta, the 18-year-old who’s scored big with his song “Crush,” can now add Washington to his list of cities with a crush on him.

What the rest of the country saw on Fox last year, he brought to town to help draw attention to the fourth annual Keeping the Promise to Our Children conference, sponsored by hip-hop’s Russell Simmons and Hollywood philanthropist, moviemaker, and punk promoter Daphna Ziman.

Archuleta capped his two-day stay at a dinner for the conference last night. And while stars Shawn King and Terrance Howard performed, too, it was young Archuleta who earned a State Department standing O in the Benjamin Franklin Diplomatic Reception Room. “I’m going to try and accompany myself,” the young star nervously told the crowd. Then he sat down at the piano and played an almost-perfect rendition of John Lennon’s “Imagine,” belting out the song in that powerful but youthful voice that allowed him to get so far on Idol. He then performed Kurt Bestor’s “Prayer of the Children” a cappella. The vocal powerhouse told Whispers that he would have been “a little more nervous” if Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had shown up.

David Archuleta ‘kind of assumed’ Adam Lambert was gay

Most people probably werenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t surprised by American Idol winner Adam Lambertà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s coming-out cover for Rolling Stone earlier this week. One of the least surprised was Idol finalist David Archuleta.

5, 6, 7, 8 Ways ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ Is All About Art, Man

Chances are, if your circle of friends contains even a few avid summer-TV watchers, you’ve been encouraged to watch So You Think You Can Dance. The American Idol-style dance competition has been steadily growing in popularity over the last four summers — so much so that it’s making a leap to Fox’s fall schedule in September — and its fans tend to be proselytizers.

Whoops, looks like you’ve got one right here.

The easiest way to win a Dance convert (says the zealot) is to describe it as “‘American Idol, but better.” Lots of people watch Idol but do so while holding their noses: it’s cheesy, it’s corporate, it’s soulless, it’s amateur hour, and the judges have no earthly idea what they’re talking about.

‘So You Think You Can Dance’: The top 20 perform (and a robot dog too!)

Kupono Finally! The part of the season we’ve been waiting for has arrived, so let’s get right to it. The first of the top 20 dancers to perform were Jeanine Mason and Phillip Chbeeb, who did a hip-hop number choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon D’umo.

They were a couple trying to get to sleep who couldn’t until they had resolved an argument. I enjoyed the piece, but didn’t quite feel as in love with it as the judges did. Maybe I was rusty, or maybe the camera angles on the dance put me off (when will the show learn that quick cuts and zooms only take away from the performances instead of enhancing them?)

LA Times

‘So You Think You Can Dance’ recap: Making Up for Lost Time

From the Foxtrot to the samba, the hip hop to the contemporary, and the non-crash-test-dummy jazz to the Bollywood, there was a lot about last night’s Top 20 performance episode of So You Think You Can Dance that makes me want to lift the show up and gleefully swing it round in the air like Brandon twirling Janette. A quick sampling of the non-partnered-dancing highlights: Brandon’s jaw-dropping opening mini-solo, in which he lifted himself up from a full split using just his legs; Cat Deeley accusing Jeanine and the Chbeeb of ‘’schnucking” at the end of their number, a word that’s kinda covertly X-rated when you think about it; Mary Murphy brilliantly redeeming her why-is-that-gonzo-woman-screeching-at-me inanity the moment she exploded in guffaws after admitting she can’t raise an eyebrow anymore thanks to Botox à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ she may be ca-razy, but that’s good TV right there; and, most intriguing of all, the producers and judges slyly attempting to absolve themselves by actively pimping almost all the dancers that had, in Nigel Lythgoe’s hilariously disingenuous words, ‘’somehow slipped under the net.”

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹So You Think You Can Danceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Primer: Because You Really Should Be Watching

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“So You Think You Can Danceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is the best reality competition show ever. Sure, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m touted as MTV Newsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ expert, and sure, I get paid to do à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idol in 60 Secondsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ recaps every season, but deep down inside, I just wanna à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Dance.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not going to rehash the reasons why I think à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“SYTYCDà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is a superior show to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“AIà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ especially since my old colleague Lindsey Thomas did it perfectly last summer. Instead, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m here to beg all of you to start watching and make this season the highest rated yet. I have no stock in the show. Hell, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s on a rival network. I just think the world will be a better place if, instead of gossiping about Miley and Jasonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s breakup, we discussed the finer points of Napoleon and Tabithaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s latest lyrical hip-hop routine.

‘America’s Best Dance Crew’: Los Angeles auditions

There was so much going on at the Los Angeles auditions Saturday that it took me a few days to take it all in.

A-Team, Soul Fresh, H.E.R., Grade A, The Dance Band, Electrolytes … so many crews to see in one day! At Foresight Studios, kids were spilling out onto Sunset Boulevard and up the side streets as they waited for their opportunity to perform. Lots of hugs and squeals of recognition as dancers reconnected or met up with people they’d heard about. And lots of evaluating eyes as crews practiced routines, got out costumes and/or props, or just generally got loud with music or raised voices.

I doubt Kris will sing NB just NOOO.If Adam sings a single from his album and Kris sings NB then that proves they are trying to Taylor the poor guy.Kris is
recording right know so its not like he wont have songs yet.

  • mj:

Well, nothing really. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just that with Tamyra singing, that meant that the S3 Idols had less focus (and maybe less songs).

I saw the tour several times, Tamyra wasn’t at any of my stops.

Actually she really didn’t work out on the tour–I think they got rid of her–or she quit, or something like that. I recall her leaving the tour.

The concert was in two parts, with the Idols singing solos in the first half and duets, trios and duets in the second half. It ran about as long as a typical Idol concert normally does.

Since the Tamyra deal was kind of a bust, I’d be surprised if they tried that again. Especially with two perfectly capable Idols (adam and kris) headlining the show.

  • reinharv:

I doubt very much that Cook, Kris & Adam will be performing at the same time together or on the same day. These concert series go on for a week or more and they only have so much time to devote to the concert series portion of their broadcast. I’d imagine Kris will have to sing No Boundaries though but he might also do Heartless and let Adam do No Boundaries. Who knows… They aren’t even close to tracking songs yet so they could very well do something they did during the competition, I just hope it’s not No Boundaries.

Kris will definitely get promoted because he’s the A.I. and he’ll do the whole circuit of promos. No doubt Adam will too but I hope Kris gets some preferential treatment. He is the winner afterall.

Well I’m a David Cook fan for sure but I have plenty of love to spread to Kris and would hoot and hollar for him too on the day he performed.

  • SashaB:

If you check the GMA website link posted above ^, all three are slated to perform on August 7th. So I’m not sure how they could avoid not being there together, since Central Park is not held in reserve for GMA daily use. Because it’s at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park and there are permits. It’s a weekly Friday concert.

Here is the (partial) GMA Summer Schedule in Central Park.

Friday, July 3 — Brad Paisley
Friday, July 10 — Queen Latifah
Friday, July 17 — to be announced
Friday, July 24 — to be announced
Friday, July 31 — Kelly Clarkson
Friday, Aug. 7 — David Cook, Kris Allen and Adam Lambert
Friday, Aug. 14 — Kenny Chesney
Friday, Aug. 21 — Reba McEntire

ETA: While the broadcast of the performances might be staggered, the concert for all three is on the 7th.

I think someone twittered that Kris was in studio recording. Even if they don’t know what tracks will make the album, they could very well decide the single and have it ready by August. That’s when Crush was released.
I think it’s possible we’ll hear new singles by then. And yes, they’ll be there together.
It seems like this year they’re all about co-winner, it sucks a bit, but doesn’t mean they won’t support Kris, there’s just another guy who’ll get the same amount of love.

    Kelly Clarkson, Cute Overload

To know me is to know that I love everything that comes out of Kelly Clarkson’s mouth — that even includes her now extinct “cool beans!” But I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed two minutes that has ever cemented my adoration for a celebrity like this interview Kelly gave to Australia’s “The Fix.”

The hilarity kicks in around the one-minute mark, and once the piggy remarks start, the genius continues aaaaall the way home!

I’m probably a very small minority of one here but I don’t think it is all bad that Adam and Kris are going to be “paired” up. Obviously they have VERY different styles and won’t really be after the exact same market share. And 19 is probably as giddy as can be that the two really like each other and really seem to enjoy playing off of each other. The chemistry is beyond excellent and they really come up with some very witty comments and comedic spots during their interviews.

I think it is win win for Adam and Kris. Neither one will have much if any new material to share with the “world” but they have themselves and their remarkable talents to work with. This way everyone is happy, including all of Cookies fans. The AI boys are going to really work the fan community and having all three will triple the response and the audience. I think it is great marketing and promotion, myself. And since Cookie won’t have a new album out it will be a great way for him to maybe pick up some more sales for his old album by having him perform in front of some “new” fans.

I haven’t seen this posted. Sorry if it’s a repeat. This was posted on FB.

Larry King will be interview David Cook on June 15th!

Regarding the Summer Concert Series, I just watched Green Day’s concert on the website (thanks to whoever linked it!), and they sang 4 songs. I doubt all were televised though.

It is odd for Cook to hook up with Kris and Adam. I suspect each will have one televised song, but that concert will be longer than most. Sounds fun, yet hot (in many ways, actually!)

  • leome:

I think the problem here is not them being together exactly. I don’t think most people mind that, it’s more people knowing how certain things were handled in the past, non winners getting the same or more “love” from 19 than the winner and how that ended. There’s some worry that Kris might not get the winner treatment.
Maybe for Adam fans it’s fun and all that, but there’s a reason Kris’s fans may question these things.

  • Mary102:

I guess Kris will sing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“No Boundariesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ? Am rather surprised that they have both Kris and Adam billed for this – together. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be the height of the AI Tour. Hopefully, Adam will have a single and not do more Idol stuff unless à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Mad Worldà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is going to be on his album.

I know they’re in DC right before this time, so they’re probably performing in NY right around the GMA appearance. But I’m sure that much singing can’t be easy for all of them.
