Today’s Idol headlines after the jump…
Nickelback sticks to the basics
…Kicking off the evening’s rockfest was Daughtry, named for its lead singer and former American Idol finalist Chris Daughtry. Daughtry drew an unusually large crowd for a 7 p.m. warmup act.
For much of his 10-song set, Daughtry (the singer) perfectly played the role of the one-dimensional hard-rocker guy - the role that ultimately alienated Idol voters and allowed the most talented member of the A-I Class of 2006 to be passed over for the likes of Taylor Hicks and Elliot Yamin….
SEACREST: ‘I CRIED AT LONGORIA WEDDING’
AMERICAN IDOL host RYAN SEACREST cried during EVA LONGORIA and TONY PARKER’s Paris wedding on Saturday (07Jul07). The Desperate Housewives actress, 32, and French basketball ace, 25, wed in a civil ceremony on Friday (06Jul07), before celebrating their union in a religious service and a reception in the 17th century Chateau of Vaux le Vicomte the following day. But the event was too much for Seacrest when the newlyweds begun their first dance. He recalled, “(They) were just staring at each other. Then Tony dipped Eva right then and there, pulled her back up and gave her a kiss. I am crying”

Music Review: Mandisa - True Beauty, The Debut Album From the American Idol Finalist
Coming this month from the American Idol, Mandisa, is her debut album True Beauty, a vocal project with a faithful purpose. Mandisa’s earlier release, “Only The World,” recently reached the #1 spot of POP Billboard’s Hot Singles Sales. Radio DJs around the country have been playing and loving it — noting that they’re sure to be hearing more from Mandisa soon…..
Birmingham Rocks
I like the new MyMusicBirmingham feature on the WBRC Birmingham (AL) site. The Fox-owned station employs the MySpace model to the web page, allowing users to share the latest buzz on the Birmingham music scene. The feature offers searchable listings of musical acts for the month, along with forums for discussion, video of local bands, blogs and bands’ MySpace pages.
“It’s a hyper-focused look at music in the market,” says general manager Dennis Leonard. “MySpace does music well, but can’t boil things down geographically. So we’re the midpoint.”
Birmingham has a rich musical history and a strong connection to American Idol–Taylor Hicks and Ruben Studdard are both from the market.
Whether or not they’re music-mad markets, we suspect the MyMusic model to be tried out at other Fox O&Os.
AIKEN EXPLAINS AIR RAGE ROW
LATEST: AMERICAN IDOL runner-up CLAY AIKEN has explained how he became involved in an air-rage bust-up on Saturday (7Jul07) - his foot “wandered” to another passenger’s arm rest while he was sleeping. The 28-year-old was on a flight from Los Angeles to Tulsa, Oklahoma when the incident occurred. But Aiken has dismissed speculation he behaved in an obnoxious manner. He tells U.S. TV news show Entertainment Tonight, “While sleeping on a plane over the weekend, my foot evidently found a home on the arm rest of the passenger seated directly in front of me. “I didn’t realise I was causing the woman any distress until she woke me up with a quick hit to the chest. “Unfortunately, being that this happened on a plane, the FBI was called in to investigate and eventually we were all sent on our way. “I’d like to thank everyone for their concern; I am fine and have taken steps to prevent any foot wandering in the future.” FBI Special Agent Gary Johnson has confirmed there was an altercation between a male and female passenger, but refused to confirm Aiken was involved in the “very minor incident”. No arrests were made.
CD Is the New Vinyl
…That would be a shortsighted. The charts tell us a more compelling story.
Second on the chart is American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson’s My December. Go a few notches lower, and you’ll find Paul McCartney’s latest CD. It peaked at the third slot a couple of weeks ago, twice as high as his previous studio album. With a Disney soundtrack, an artist launched by a Fox TV show, and McCartney’s release on Starbucks ‘ (Nasdaq: SBUX) Hear Music label, it’s easy to see that the hottest titles are coming from unlikely sources….

Nowhere. Well, at least it’s not anywhere to be found on the NY Times Best Seller List, or on Amazon’s Top 25 or on iTunes audiobook list. So, I’m thinking it is not the best selling book in the country.
I’m a Taylor fan, and I too will most likely go out and buy the book. But, the publishing industry is a tough nut to crack and a best seller is a difficult thing for most authors to come by. My point being, don’t get your hopes up. Taylor would be extremely lucky to even crack the Top 20. A Number #1 best seller is highly unlikely.
ETA - okay, you guys beat me to it. I’m too slow :)
I think this is because the first post on the subject was quoted in another post and lost it’s context. A sort of blog “telephone”.
Here’s the source post of this discussion:
I believe that the poster was predicting (or hoping) that it would be “the next Best Selling book” and using the “the #1 book in the country” clause to clarify the term “Best Selling”. Or perhaps not. I don’t know.
And yes, we won’t have numbers until next week (if ever). Of course, there are a gazillion “Best Seller” lists, so it’s possible it might make it onto one. “Best Seller” lists for books rarely are (each list comes up with it’s own surveying criteria and there are often numerous clauses to disallow all sorts of books). I read an interesting article on that a while ago (discussing why they are often so different from each other).
Perhaps it will be the number 1 Musical Biography written by somebody from Alabama next week. It certainly wouldn’t be the most obscure achievement we’ve had posted on this blog.
In any event, HDD does have some final numbers:
3 Kelly Clarkson 116,364 -61%
20 Daughtry 31,485 -8%
23 Carrie Underwood 27,031 -5%
And, for the Hannah fans: 2 Hannah Montana 186,567 -42%
I see no eidence of #1 anywhere, much less everywhere.
I forgot to leave condolences for Jordin!!! Think of all the years she could have with Clive running HER career. Thank TMU that he is 100 years old already.
hs……. aw…. our dreams are always dashed by someone
Well, Taylor’s book is #1 on my list! Obscure, I know, but it counts at my house.
Oh, I think Taylor will crack the Top 20 on a couple of lists. Both Clay and Fantasia managed that on the prestigious New York Times Bestseller list for Hardcover Nonfiction.
If Hannah’s numbers hold, she’s sold gold in two weeks. Who would have thought?
And ouch for Kelly…that estimated 61% drop is her steepest second week sales drop to date.
What was the number one cd’s sales?
Yeah, but she is still in the top five. Which is mind boggling that cd sales are so bad. But, maybe it’s the time of the year. I don’t follow cd sales charts, so I don’t know if this is what they would call “the slow cd sales” period.
I’ve dug and dug and researched the internet, and have come to conclusion that sales figures for books are almost impossible to know (unlike CD sales). That info is sent to publishers and are not normally posted to the general public. Just as well - my enjoyment of artful things like CDs and Books is not dependent on how many other people bought similar items. The book wouldn’t be on any ‘lists’ yet, since it just came out today, but I will be looking for it in the next few weeks.
The comment about Wait for You being the sleeper hit of the summer and the hottest song of the week was not from Idol Chatter but the main music blog. So it’s the biggest gainer in radio play of all the singles out not just the idols. After a stall, the radio play zoomed up again and it could become a Top 5 pop hit.
Taylor will do fine. His fan base will insure sales of at least 100,000 I’m sure.
HDD is estimating that T.I. will get 465,984 (”T.I. VS. T.I.P.” is the name of the album)
Hannah will see some competition in her genre next week when the Cheetah Girls release their next CD. Also releasing are Interpol, Smashing Pumpkins and Three 6 Mafia. Nickelback is re-releasing it’s last CD.
#1 sold 466k, #50 HDD sold 14,340 units — not sure it was a slow week at all!
Thanks. Now that’s selling some cds. Hannah would not have seen her cd in the number one spot this week with last week’s numbers…LOL
I like T.I. I really believe that if he continues with attitude he showed on The BET Awards where he apologized on camera for a silly “beef” with Ludacris, he will be around for a long time. The rap world needs more Rappers who will own up to their nonsense, instead of making excuses..

ROFLMAO. It’s Deja Vu all over again.
Our favorite Idol Miss Katharine said the following last year about her oft-delayed recording debut: “I could sell 800,000 or three million. I really don’t care.”
And we all know how that turned out.
Heh. Me neither Kirsten.
Yeah. O.J. Simpson’s tome “If I Did It” is featured there.
Is that what you meant? LOL.
What the hell can you expect from a POTTHEAD?
RSF……….I wouldn’t say O.J.s book is “featured” since it isn’t for sale. You know, the authors there might all be a**es for that matter and not be “good people”. But they are good writers. Clarified?????
How is Wait For You a sleeper hit? that song has been out forever
I think sleeper means it’s becoming a big hit very quietly. It’s been slowly but surely moving up the Top 40 chart.
Radname - Does Kat’s new vid come out tomorrow?

I am a Taylor (and Paul Potts) fan and all but have to chuckle at the top ten on this list. I threw number 11 in merely because of the priceless subtitle…..”Ultimate Brain”

LOL, it’s probably No. 1 on the list of gray-haired 30 year old Idol winners, too.
Seriously, if I weren’t a fan I would not give two hoots about the book. I’m not a big memoir fan, especially of someone only 30 years old.
Maybe I’m jaded, but I expect mediocre reviews and mediocre sales, just because I can’t imagine anyone buying this aside from his fans.
I would chuckle at any other Idol writing their memoirs, and I chuckled at myself as I bought my copy today. But I’m looking forward to a light, enjoyable summer read while I’m away on vacation next week.

How is Wait For You a sleeper hit? that song has been out forever
———————-
see, that is what “sleeper” means, it is around for a good while and seems to be sleeping but it quietly is moving. Every once in a while there are “sleeper” movies that creep up the earnings charts slowly but steadily and no one saw it happening. My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding was one of them as was Sleepless in Seattle. It doesn’t happen often but every once in awhile a sleeper happens.
“Sleep Happens!”
Hmmmm….last I checked his Cd was bundled with a knitting tutorial.
Don’t know if this mentioned previously-took my son to see the Transformers movie and got there early for once and there was a commercial during the preshow show on screen for Lego Bionicle set to the Daughtry song Crashed.
Amazon saw the error of their ways and the book is now coupled with it’s rightful owner - the Taylor Hick’s CD :)
