The Biz: Big American Idol News Coming Monday
Monday is the day when American Idol changes forever.
According to an industry source close to the situation, Fox and Idol’s production company, 19 Entertainment, have made their decision on a replacement for departing judge Simon Cowell — and will make an announcement at the network’s Television Critics Association summer press tour presentation on Aug. 2.

Kris Allen: ‘The Truth’ Video Preview!
Kris Allen shoots his new music video for “The Truth” in the middle of the Californian desert.
But the weather wasn’t very cooperative!
“Apparently, in the desert, when it starts raining the ground just turns into mush,” the 25-year-old American Idol champ told MTV. “It started to monsoon, man! It was crazy. It was one of the biggest storms I’ve ever been in but it was almost kind of fun in a way. We were just standing outside, [but] I felt like we had just jumped in the pool.”

Sony Music Posts Gains in Most Recent Quarter
Sony Music Entertainment posted slight gains in the quarter ending June 30, 2010. The company’s revenue increased 1.3% to 110.3 billion yen ($1.24 billion) from 108.8 billion yen last year. Sony cited the impacts of top sellers such as AC/DC’s “Iron Man 2” soundtrack, music from the TV show “Glee,” Usher’s “Raymond v Raymond” and Kana Nishino’s “to LOVE.”
Operating income rose 39% to 7.5 billion yen ($84 million) from 5.4 billion yen. The company attributed the increase to its top sellers as well as a decrease in marketing and overhead costs.

Kristy Lee Cook Tackles Great Outdoors in New Show
The idea is simple but ingenious, really: Take a winsome country singer, give her a hunting show that features exotic locales and throw in a couple of celebrities.
That’s the premise behind Versus’ “Goin’ Country,” which features former “American Idol” contestant Kristy Lee Cook in a reality show based on her life and her love of hunting.
The show, which begins Sunday, highlights hunts from Texas to Wisconsin to Nashville. Country singer Aaron Tippin takes her turkey hunting on his land near Music City, fellow “Idol” finalist Blake Lewis joins her on a deer hunt in Texas and singer Jake Owen and his twin brother, Jarrod, go after exotic deer in Missouri.

“Financially, it’s good for you, and the experience of it, and for your own growth as a musician, it’s amazing to be on tour and perform in front of that many people,” Lynche says. “That’s what you always dream about, and you skip a lot of steps when you go on the American Idol tour, as far as the arenas you play and the number of people you get to be in front of.
“A lot of us in the top 10 this year were already working musicians and wanted to get a leg up in our career, so being in the top 10 and going on tour is something to look forward to, and spending the summer doing something great.”

I didn’t even know Kelly Rowland wrote songs. I read an article on EW or RS or something on her recently about her split with Beyonce’s dad for her new stuff, etc., and found it all very interesting how she’s finding her way, but didn’t come away with this impression that she had a very strong artistic identity, or that she’s a songwriter. Interesting.
ETA: skimmed wiki, and she cowrote most of her solo stuff.

It would be hilarious if they replaced the whole panel, like Nigel said he wanted to do earlier in the year. I could actually see Simpson as the “new Paula” if she was paired with someone like, say, Gene Simmons. Randy could stay in that instance, too. I know that sounds crazy, but Ellen is useless and Kara is too manic. They could both go and I’d be cool with it.
We’ve recently heard that Nigel is back with a role on IDOL, last night on SYTYCD he had a slip up and called the show “American IDOL” instead of SYTYCD and now we’re hearing the replacements will be announced on Monday. This will be a loooonnnng weekend. I hope the annnouncement is good news for fans.
I would be thrilled if they brought in a new panel. And people who were younger. One on the many problems with Ellen is that she is also older and is not current.
Also, I am not a fan of Harry Connick [way too technical and serious and intense to work well in that format], Elton John or Gene Simmons [too old], or Randy [he is a parody of himself now -- Yo Dawg!].
Why can’t they bring in a young producer, a young rude person with a British accent and a pop performer who had hit songs a few years ago.
If they want someone older, then pick someone who knows music and has a sense of humor — Cyndi Lauper for example.
I think they need only 3 judges – and all new. Actually no judges would be nice. I’ve always found Randy to be most annoying.

Ooh, that’s not a bad idea actually. She’s the same vintage as Paula (or earlier) but she is actually widely respected as a singer!! Plus, she has much more pop culture relevance and is known for her advocacy of LGBT rights. She seems like a smart cookie, and people are predisposed to liking her. Maybe she can also give Kara the smackdown once in a while. Wooo!

Q3, I mostly agree with your Idol judge wish. Except another Brit. It’s “American” Idol for heaven’s sake. what there are no qualified Americans to replace Simon? I would love to see Shania Twain as a judge. She was never twangy country (not that there’s anything wrong with that – I love the old stuff). She was/is pop-country. And she certainly knows how to make it in the music business the hard way.

I’m excited to hear about Adam making plans to write. Although I laughed when Kelly admitted to being a control freak since Adam says he is one also. That said Adam is such a nice person and I’m sure he’s totally professional etc so no worries here about them working together. I would love to be a fly on the wall and watch creative Adam create.
Any word about when Kris’s video will be out? Looks interesting. I heard TT the first time in DC on Mix107.3 yesterday. I still hear LLWD and Adam’s WWFM. Have not yet heard IIHY on the radio in DC area.
I can wait until Monday to find out the big AI news. Why do I feel it’s either going to be ho-hum or WTF?
Much as I love Cyndi Lauper, she’d make a terrible judge for AI. I saw her on The Apprentice and she absolutely cannot give bad news. She’d put every kid that showed up through, plus she talks in incessantly and in circles. I don’t think she’d be willing to take the job anyway.
Cyndi L. on The Apprentice was likeable but also was really, really strange. She was completely off topic much of the time. She rambled worse than Paula ever did. She actually made me nervous to watch. She was just unable to make her point, even when she had a good one. Just what we don’t need in a judge.
With the money they pay the judges, they should be able to hire the absolute perfect panel but when was the last time they did anything smart?
So is there anyone up in the running that we dont know about???

Close reading of the actual words – Nobody official ever said it was an announcement of the new judge to replace Simon, did they? All the article said was a big announcement on Monday. And all we have is “According to an industry source” – since some of these whackaloon judge candidates have also come from “An industry source” – that wouldn’t fill me with confidence.
I think they have a few more weeks to string us along, and I think they’ll use them for the biggest PR pop possible.
But we shall see, KWIM?

I was just coming to post about Ellen’s announcement. I think she’s made the right choice all the way around.
So what about all of those interviews where Ellen said she was just testing the waters this year but would be giving more critical and specific feedback going forward and the fact that she had signed a 5 year contract?
Sounds to me like she’s trying to save face. Or, she really does care about the show and was “convinced” she needed to move on in order for the show to recover. Hmmmmm.
Ellen’s a class act regardless of her reasons for leaving.

I’m glad to see Kristie Lee Cook getting some TV exposure. It’s probably just what she needs to get her foot into the country music scene. I wish her well. The episode with her going hunting with Blake Lewis should be hoot!
