Today’s Idol headlines after the jump…

‘Idols’ show starts slow, finishes on high note

The American Idols Live tour set up shop in the Mellon Arena last night with one of the cheapest looking stages ever to grace a major tour.

The unimaginative set, with its tacky lighting, poor layout, spinning disco balls and stop-motion video screen hoisted high above it all, set the stage for an evening of performances that could be described as a night with “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.”…….

Miami’s “American Idol” auditions, 10:45 a.m.: Hey, Constantine!

You wanna know how tight a ship FOX is running at these here American Idol auditions? Not only are the nameless faceless security dudes keeping the media and contestants on a tight leash behind several metal barricades like well-dressed veal, but they’re even making the semi-famous jump through hoops.

On the way out of the venue to come back here to Pop Stuff’s Miami outpost for a breather, I walked past an unhappy-looking, familiar guy with long curly hair standing outside the barricades.

“Constantine?”

“Yeah,” acknowledged a polite-ish but obviously preoccupied Constantine Maroulis, 2005 “Idol” contestant and current “Bold and the Beautiful” star……..

Miami’s “American Idol” auditions, 2 p.m.: I took the door less traveled by…

…which probably means that I’ve made the next round of “American Idol.”

Because the door most traveled through, otherwise known as Gate 7 at Miami’s American Airlines Arena, is the exit for all of those singers who have been told “Thanks but no thanks” by the producers who form the first hurdle to Idoldom. And there are a lot more “no”’s being given to the crowd, which numbers somewhere between 8,000 (according to senior producer Patrick Lynn) and 10,000 (host with the most Ryan Seacrest)…….

Miami “American Idol” auditions, 4 p.m.: The fabulous and the freaky

…Of course, as I said previously, there were a lot more people being ushered through Rejection Village than Victory Town. A whole lot more. And not one person that I saw cursed anyone out, or flipped the bird, or passionately explained how all of us bleeping people could bleepingly bleep their bleeping bleep. Methinks they either save that jazz for Simon and them, or everyone in Miami is just that mature and polite.

Yeah. I think they’re saving it for Simon, too…..

Midlands musician offers his take on the ‘Idol’ audition experience

What did I enjoy most about auditioning for “American Idol” with 8,000 or more of my closest friends?

Hmmm.

Was it the sleep deprivation? The two-hour nap last Thursday morning between the end of my night shift at work and the start of my trek to North Charleston for registration?

Was it waiting in line for four hours that day to register for the right to wait in line for four more hours Saturday just to enter the coliseum?

Was it having to wear a plastic shopping bag over my right hand while in the shower to protect the paper wristband I was required to display for three days? (Ah, the wristband, which advertised proudly to every Tom, Dick and Harry that I had just attended a signup for a TV reality series.)…………

Ex-USC quarterback gives American Idol the thumbs down

After an audition Friday in North Charleston, TV’s “American Idol” didn’t make a fan of Syvelle Newton.

The former South Carolina quarterback sang three songs — one more than he thought he’d belt out — but was eventually cut in his bid to reach the popular amateur talent show’s second round.

The athletic native of Wallace wasn’t left impressed by the auditioning process, which he said focused too much on laughs and not enough on talent……….

I really like it. I think it fits her like a glove!

  3. 53 RightSaidFred Aug 23rd, 2007 at 11:47 pm

Well that’s just awful. Formulaic with a mundane, often clumsy, over-produced vocal. Which means it will probably chart Top 20. LOL.

  4. 54 star Aug 23rd, 2007 at 11:49 pm

Snap judgement: I think she sounds great, but I kinda hated this song the first time around when it was called “Irreplaceable.” It’ll be interesting to see how the song does on the radio. Even though I’m personally not that crazy about it, I could still see it doing well on the charts.

  5. 55 maracaibo Aug 23rd, 2007 at 11:53 pm

Well.. Honestly that was bad, and I like Jordin. Sorry.

Even Kat’s “Over It” was a million times better.
I don’t think this song is going to chart at all, maybe in the beginning with the AI fans, but after I don’t see a bright future with it.
I just think Jordin is way much better than that crap sorry.
Couldn’t they come with better?? Just saying.

Anyways, now I can wait all the time in the world for Blake’s press announcement and single release. At least I know he won’t be doing Tattoo songs.

  6. 56 Sarah Aug 24th, 2007 at 12:01 am

Star, I can see it being a hit on the charts too. Maybe not a #1, but definitely a modest hit. It’s not a great song (cheesy fo sho), but it does have a good hook and she sings the hell out of it.

From hearing this song, her album looks to be a lot like ***’s, seems like.

Confession time: I actually liked Irreplaceable. To the left, to the left. Now! Get THAT outta your head! :)

  7. 57 star Aug 24th, 2007 at 12:09 am

I actually liked Irreplaceable. To the left, to the left. Now! Get THAT outta your head! :)

Sing it with “Tattoo” after the background singers drop out of the chorus. It’s uncanny, lol.

(WTF with that hicupping sound effect? Blake, is that you? :P)

  8. 58 Sarah Aug 24th, 2007 at 12:14 am

    LMAO. I heart Star. :)

  9. 59 foxydonna Aug 24th, 2007 at 12:14 am

Jordin’s voice sounds great, but the song is kinda dreary. “You’re on my heart just like a tattoo?” It’s gonna be a hit, though. It is indeed formulaic and simple with a catchy hook.

  10. 60 pj Aug 24th, 2007 at 12:17 am

The song Tattoo didn’t impress me, but Jordin sounds good. I wouldn’t be shocked if she did very well.

And I think it’s a lot better than Kat’s efforts and Jordin’s team seems to know their market. Time will tell. Good luck to her!

  11. 61 maracaibo Aug 24th, 2007 at 12:18 am

    Kat’s “Over It” had a catchy hook too(better IMO)and it wasn’t a big HIT.
    But what do I know?

  12. 62 Sarah Aug 24th, 2007 at 12:29 am

And I think it’s a lot better than Kat’s efforts and Jordin’s team seems to know their market. Time will tell. Good luck to her!

Agreed, PJ. They all deserve success. If she does better than Blake, I will not lose sleep.

IMO, Jordin can sing circles around ***, and this song is a million times better than anything on ***’s cd. It will play to her market very well, most likely. Smart move.

  13. 63 maracaibo Aug 24th, 2007 at 12:38 am

I still don’t think that song. I already heard it several times. But I guess I don’t anythingabout HITS.

I do know I liked Elliot’s “Wait for You” and Daughtry’s “It’s Not Over” and “Home” and those were HITS. But as I said, I know nothing.

I think that song will only appeal to teenagers, but I guess that’s good.
Hey, if HSM2 can sell millions of CD’s, Jordin will too.

  14. 64 jobbix Aug 24th, 2007 at 12:40 am

I don’t know. The song is uplifting all right, but it has no edge at all, and not that hooky. The lyrics are full of cliches. I can’t see it being a top 10 hit. No way. Kind of reminds me of all the McPhee songs. Generic with no edge.. :huh_tb:

  15. 65 Kirsten Aug 24th, 2007 at 12:43 am

I finally found a way to listen to Jordin’s new song.

Okay. I don’t know what is worse: the absolutely crappy production values or the sappy lyrics. If this is indicative of the other songs on her CD, I think I’ve discovered what the album will be called…”Velveeta”.

The hiccupping sound drove me nuts.

In other news, I just checked and this song is not listed as going for adds on either the Mediabase or Billboard associated sites (All Access or R&R). What happened to the 27th release date? Perhaps I’m checking the wrong formats. Anybody got the URL for songs that will be impacting “Radio Fromage” next week?

I’m craving some white cheddar now. Sigh.

  17. 67 Sarah Aug 24th, 2007 at 12:50 am

Kirsten, is there a “Disney” format? Heh.

I think the song definitely has a good hook and it will do well in her market. Outside of that, we’ll see. It’s cheesy for sure, and not distinctive, but it is catchy. And it will probably get a good push from Jive, so I definitely think it will be a modest hit. Not HUGE like “Beautiful Girls” or “Umbrella”, but I don’t think it’s gonna fail.

  18. 68 Kirsten Aug 24th, 2007 at 12:54 am

Kirsten, is there a “Disney” format? Heh

Would you be surprised if I answered “Yes”?

    Drum roll please….

  19. 69 jobbix Aug 24th, 2007 at 1:01 am

She’d better corner as much Disney audience as she possibly can. I can’t see adults shelling out bucks for an album full of songs like this.. :huh_tb:

  20. 70 Sarah Aug 24th, 2007 at 1:03 am

Well, as HSM and Hannah Montana have proven, the tween market is pretty huge.

And I think you’d be surprised at the adults who’d buy a cd like that.

  21. 71 jobbix Aug 24th, 2007 at 1:08 am

I really can’t. Case in point: all the solo albums from HSM cast members failed miserably, with no exception.. :rolleyes_tb:

  22. 72 maracaibo Aug 24th, 2007 at 1:10 am

She’d better corner as much Disney audience as she possibly can. I can’t see adults shelling out bucks for an album full of songs like this.. :huh_tb:

I agree. IMo Jordin has always a Disney type of singer anyways. But I guess she will do well.
So good luck to her. The song is way cheesy and there’s nothing unique about it. Generic bubblegum pop.

  23. 73 Sarah Aug 24th, 2007 at 1:11 am

Did I say solo albums? No. There is a difference there. The fanbase is there. Jordin will have the push. Tweens like her and will eat this shit up. End of story.

    ETA:

The song is way cheesy and there’s nothing unique about it. Generic bubblegum pop.

Which is exactly why it will likely be a modest hit. As I said, not distinctive enough to be a bit hit a la “Umbrella”, but enough to garner interest.

ETA2: For those who can’t listen on AOL, the song is also up on her myspace. http://www.myspace.com/jordinsparks

  24. 74 NOLA Aug 24th, 2007 at 1:18 am

I agree, Sarah. Afterall, the girl is only 17.

  25. 75 jobbix Aug 24th, 2007 at 1:24 am

I’m not so sure. HSM albums are huge sellers. However, albums from Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu all flopped..Tweens are nothing if not fickle and unpredictable, you never know. :innocent1_tb:

  26. 76 marco5ny Aug 24th, 2007 at 3:00 am

Can’t believe I logged off and missed all this! Listening to this mid-tempo pop song I can just picture a pre-teen girl dancing around in her room and singing along to this at the top of her lungs. Ohmigod! “You’re on my heart / just like a tattoo / just like a tattoo / i’ll always have you.” This is so High School Musical it hurts.

It won’t be “Umbrella” or “Girlfriend” but I think it will do nicely. MUCH will depend on the video….

  27. 77 daisy Aug 24th, 2007 at 6:36 am

Jordin has got her self a hit,imo very high school musical, great hook, the tweens are going to love it. Watched HSM II with my two nieces ages 6 and 10 last night, while my boys made wisecracks during the show (finally had to ban them from the room), don’t really get the appeal, but hey I saved copies of teen beat and that Zac is a cutie pie :smile_wp:
