here's David 4 years ago singing the National anthem at the goveners inauguration. Poor thing sounds waaayyy nervous but its still amazing he could sing like that back then with limited range and voice issues.

What an honor for Jennifer! I pray God gives her the strength to perform, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹The Star-Spangled Bannerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ at the Inauguration of Barack Obama. Her mother would have been so proud.

The actual physical purchase of a CD still ranks number one with me.

Yeah, Business Mirror is the online version of a business paper published in the Phillipines. Ann Powers writes for the LA Times, and that article was redacted a bit and refurbished for the local Asian markets. Interesting mention of the iTunes application and RCA as well from a market point of view. It's a business paper so the marketing and distribution would be of interest for their readers. Good overall article on David Cook, too. Leads me to believe that talks are already in the works for global marketing of DCTR and David Cook. Apparently he's got a huge following in the Phillipines. Always Be My Baby was the song of the year for some radio stations. I know Archie's going to Asia in February. Maybe Cook will head over there, too.

Awesome article. Sorry if it's been posted before. It's from MSN interviewing DC and Raine Maida.

http://businessmirror.com.ph/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3993:taking-a-big-step&catid=32:life&Itemid=68

I hope this works. Thanks.

ETA: This article repeats some things we've already read, but is still a great read. It seems RM is impressed with DC. Edited for Maida's name as well.

MJ, are you going to work for USAToday? or is Barnes coming to work for you? He was starting to quote you on the numbers and other AI informatin in the past couple months :-)

Sounds like he's landed somewhere, which is a good thing. Wish him the best.

Fewer numbers and more emphasis on the music might just relieve some of the fan group competition over whose idol is better because he/she has sold more. I wouldn't mind that one bit. Besides, I enjoy reading Dave White much more than I enjoy reading Ken Barnes!

In regard to Taylor's Modern Whomp name for his label, at this point I don't think it's anything more than a name. I haven't read anything recently about him attempting to explain what it means. I'd be a bit surprised if he kept trying to define his music as Modern Whomp. But what do I know?

I wish Ken well. I also hope that someone takes up publishing the Idol numbers somewhere. It's especially nice to be able to get numbers when the song or person that you're following falls out of the top x number reported on by the media or leaked by particular leakers.

Oh, and regarding Ken Barnesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the one we know, but personally, I really just care about who gives me the NUMBERS! lol

Numbers are Ken's thing. There's no guarantee the new blogger is going to be posting the numbers like Ken did. That took a lot of work, and a certain kind of expertise the guy taking over may not have. He may just be a TV critic, like many of the writers who cover AI.

7.99 could work. They wouldn't have to keep it low forever, just long enough for people to get in the habit of buying both singles and albums more equally.
Hmmmm...

Advertising brainstorming and think tanks, or something, will find a way to feature and ressurect à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“the albumà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and reasons to buy it in the near future I would like to think.

I hope albums never ever go away, but I think part of the problem is pricing. If I like a single, and I like a few songs on the album and I know the artist, I will usually buy the album (but since I know the artist, I am fairly confident I will like the whole album). But if I only like a couple of songs or I am not familiar with the artist, I will most likely buy just the single. I am not willing to risk 9.99 on an unknown. And, I can download 10 singles individually until I make up the price of the album. I don't really get a big price break for buying the album as a whole. But if an album was 5.99 or so, I would be more willing to take a chance on buying an album. If I sample 4 or 5 songs on itunes and I like them, I would be more inclined to shell out the 5.99 and get the other 5 or 6 songs on the album for free (as opposed to buying each one individually). In my opinion, the labels need to give more of an incentive to buy an album (listeners could then take a risk at sampling newer artists and get the joy of the album artistry). Labels are still adhering to old pricing strategies and to me, that doesn't work anymore.

I can't imagine not buying albums (full CDs). I think there are many like you, Noctem, who will continue to appreciate the full work of any one artist or group and buy the whole enchilada. I do believe singles (itunes) are here to stay however. It'll all work itself out eventually. Advertising brainstorming and think tanks, or something, will find a way to feature and ressurect "the album" and reasons to buy it in the near future I would like to think.

Now, regarding Taylor Hicks, I really wish he'd dump the Modern Whomp name. It's unidentifiable. He tried to explain what that was once, but he lost me in the explaination for sure, and I'm sure many couldn't figure out what the heck he was talking about. He just needs to realize he is not going to reinvent the wheel in music. He's a good guy and has talent. I will always like him as the entertainer no matter how he likes to fancy himself with nondescripts.

Kelly, Kelly...........is that you????, lol.

Brian Mansfield is taking over for Ken Barnes.

He's not a numbers guy, though. He won't be carrying that on. The blog will change a lot without Ken in charge.

ETA:

Brooke blogs and something about her I hadnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t read about here yet is that she has new management.

I saw that. I'm going to post something about that out front at some point.

(Here's my contribution to the albums vs. singles topic that was going on yesterday, if anyone is still interested in that subject. I was going to post it in the other thread, but since the articles that spawned the discussion are linked above, it made sense to write my take in here....)

I actually don't feel like dissecting the highly speculative notion that singles sales are on their way to gaining primacy over album sales in the recording industry. But, I do want to comment on the future consequences for music itself if things do move in this direction.

A shift away from albums and toward singles as the music business's preferred commodity will shift the "poppification" of music into overdrive. Every song an artist wants to release will make the cut for the record-- or be cut from the record-- based not on the contribution and addition it brings to a unified album but on the song's individual capacity to fit into a radio station playlist and the likelihood that it will get stuck in the heads of those who listen to it and be downloaded a massive amount of times.

Now I like a good, catchy hook as much as anyone, but there are some songs that are not meant to be singles and will simply not burn up the Itunes charts. "Mothers of the Disappeared", the last track on one of the greatest albums ever (The Joshua Tree) by one of the best bands ever (U2), is one of the finest gems on that album. But, that song could NEVER be a radio single and would never become a huge MP3 seller. It's just not that kind of song (even though it is melodic).

Would a track like that even see the light of day in a day when record companies care more about singles than albums? Music will suffer immensely as a result if the overarching standard for an album's song inclusion is the song's ability to be played in rotation on Z-100.

Ken Barnes is leaving Idol Chatter. Sigh. I enjoyed reading his blogs and reviews (and of course, his great numbers).

Somehow, I'm not surprised. He always seemed a little too cool for the room. A deadly attitude if your going to cover something as cheesy as Idol. LOL.

Other than his numbers and his reviews, his Idol coverage consisted mostly of posting press releases that came across his desk. I never got the feeling that he enjoyed it very much.

The numbers coverage, however was invaluable. It sounds like he's going to cover that somewhat somewhere else, but not as extensively. That's too bad.
