Dark side is blocking out Kelly Clarkson’s pop

Kelly Clarkson has whipped up plenty of theater around herself lately - enough to give Sunday night’s concert at the Beacon the potential to seem like either a triumphant return or one more troubled turn in a downward spiral.

Surprise! It was both, divided neatly into two diametrically opposed halves……

Altogether, the eight shows brought in $60,000 for the city in a series that officials deem a success. Organizers say they plan to be back next year……

Golf Tournaments Offer Big Wins, Big Losses

…Organizers said there are all kinds of extras that can make a difference in attracting participants year after year. Susan Cyr, director of the Mark R. In an age where everything from friendships to financial planning has moved online, the pulse of pop culture, the ups and downs of the housing market, and even the subjects of fifth-grade homework assignments can all be measured by tallying search terms and mouse clicks…..

…And all searches are not equal. Last year, Tancer dissected American Idol search data, finding that Taylor Hicks and his competitor Katharine McPhee drove Web searches. Idol’s Yamin impresses in Machine Shop gig in Flint, Michigan

The Machine Shop isn’t exactly the first place you’d expect to see a performance by an “American Idol” whose last name isn’t Daughtry.

Of course, the biker-themed metal club did host last year’s fourth place finisher, Chris Daughtry, in a sold-out show in March.

Elliott Yamin, the guy who finished one spot ahead of Daughtry on last year’s show, came to the Shop on Saturday night, and while the turnout of about 250 could hardly be called a sellout, it was clear that the young white soul singer wasn’t daunted by the unfamiliar surroundings…….

Go ahead and feel free to be miserable: It’s Monday and National Grouch Day

Today is National Grouch Day, the singular 24-hour period each year when having a case of “the Mondays” is not only allowed but encouraged.

Although the purveyors of pills might disagree, experts maintain there’s good reason to celebrate the walking, talking rain clouds of the world - if only for a day…….

One of singing von Trapps dies at 91

Werner von Trapp, a member of the musical family made famous by the 1965 film The Sound of Music, died Thursday at home in Waitsfield, Vt. He was 91.

The Sound of Music was based loosely on a 1949 book by his stepmother, Maria von Trapp, who died in 1987. It tells the story of an Austrian woman who married a widower with seven children and teaches them music.

Born in 1915 in Zell am See, Austria, von Trapp was the fourth child and second son of Captain Georg von Trapp and his first wife, Agathe Whitehead.

During the 1930s, von Trapp studied cello and sang tenor in his family’s choir, The Trapp Family Singers, who won great acclaim throughout Europe after their debut in 1935.

In 1938, he and the rest of his family escaped from Nazi-occupied Austria. After they arrived in New York, the family became popular with concert audiences and eventually settled in Vermont.

Werner von Trapp, a member of the musical family made famous by the 1965 film The Sound of Music, died Thursday at home in Waitsfield, Vt. He was 91.

I don’t remember Werner at all. However I do remember the names of the seven kids — Liesl ( I am 16 going on 17), Mark ( I’m 14 and I’m impossible), Louisa, Kurt, Brigitta (the dark haired one), Marta and Gretel. So, where’s Werner ?

  4. 4 marco5ny Oct 15th, 2007 at 10:55 am

According to ABC, Werner was portrayed as Kurt in the movie.

Mark? Isn’t it Friedrich? (not sure of the spelling)

    Re:The Commercial Appeal article…

Koolmomma and I went to see Taylor’s show at the Snowden Grove amphitheater. We had beautiful weather that day and the tickets were only $20 for that particular show. I really liked the setup of the venue and wouldn’t hesitate to see any artist that I like there—weather permitting.
I don’t mind the heat or a little bit of rain…but if the lightning starts, my ass is outta there lol

Someone mentioned this over at Sucks: S5 now has 4 gold albums (2 of them certified platinum).

    Chris - 3x platinum certified
    Taylor - platinum certified
    Kellie - gold certified
    Elliott - gold certified

    Singles:

“It’s Not Over” - platinum (Chris)
    “Home” - gold (Chris)
“Wait For You” - gold (Elliott)

  9. 9 hoodathunk Oct 15th, 2007 at 8:49 pm

They forgot “Do I Make You Proud” which was certified as gold, but that’s OK, I think Taylor would rather forget it too.

  10. 10 Tony Oct 15th, 2007 at 8:59 pm

    I compiled the singles.

I did a search for “Do I Make You Proud” and it wasn’t in the RIAA’s database.

  11. 11 marco5ny Oct 15th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

The Gold certification status of Taylor’s first single was (is) the subject of debate. A fan site stated that it was certified gold and showed a photo of some sort of plaque. But it was never listed in the RIAA database or an official press release.

I did a search for “Do I Make You Proud” and it wasn’t in the RIAA’s database.

It was definitely certified gold. I remember Gray Charles reporting on it.

But it was never listed in the RIAA database or an official press release.

That’s odd. Gray’s site is down (maybe forever?) or I’d do a search and post the picture.

Goodie! Yet another conspiracy theory to add to the list. The more the merrier.

I definitely remember seeing the picture of the plaque.

It works Nevada, I see it :)

  17. 17 marco5ny Oct 16th, 2007 at 11:14 am

That’s the same photo that used to be posted. It and the GrayCharles site appears to be the primary source of the information about Taylor’s single being gold.

A similar circumstance (”conspiracy” :smirk2_ee:) surrounds the certification for Clay’s album Measure of a Man. The record label bio and other sources indicate that it went triple-platinum but the RIAA website database only lists it as double-platinum.
