DURHAM – With American Idol winner Taylor Hicks cast as the Teen Angel in the 1950’s-themed musical “Grease,” the whole show is a fun and entertaining two hours that leaves you wanting more.

Of course, most people are familiar with the storyline behind “Grease”, as it was made popular in the iconic movie by the same name with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

The “Grease” musical is now on tour across the nation and the production stopped in Durham earlier this month and sold out several shows at the new Durham Performing Arts Center in the downtown area. The brand new building is a beautiful addition that is next to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park and other renovated areas of the city.

Without any disasters, someone who did fine will go home

There are still 10 couples left on ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ but Tom Bergeron promised at the beginning that we are, indeed, halfway through the season with Monday’s Argentine tango and paso doble performances.

First up with the paso doble were Natalie Coughlin and Alec Mazo, who have been strong in recent weeks. Natalie’s relatively serene personality didn’t make her a natural bullfighting type, so Alec worked hard to get her passionate face in shape. Natalie had another strong showing, but she was indeed more skilled than she was fiery. While the dance to ‘American Woman’ wasn’t entirely convincing to the judges, they continued to praise her technique.

La Toya Jackson watched the show from the audience and delivered Marie a belated birthday gift backstage. Last week marked Marie’s 50th birthday.

Also joining Marie after the show was Derek Hough, who rested his dancing feet this week after being diagnosed with a bad case of the flu. He gave ET a health status update, saying, “I’m feeling a little better’ ¦I’m on the way up.”

Louie Vito Talks About Chemistry with Chelsie Hightower

Another Monday, which means another blog about Dancing With The Stars from me.

I wanted to start this week’s blog off by saying THANK YOU to everyone who voted for me last week. It definitely wasn’t my best dance but I worked hard and did it the best I could. It was a hard dance to do because it is a dance that is suppose to showcase the woman and one where the guy leads her around the entire dance. Let me tell you, although it is called a 2-step, it’s a lot harder than it sounds.

Enough of that, let’s move on to this week. I was ready from day one to step it up and make sure this was one of my better dances. The only thing is, I had to learn three dances this week. The Argentine tango, the hustle (group dance) and a knockout dance, which will be used next week if you are in the bottom two. I tried to put most of my effort and focus on the Argentine tango since the hustle is not judged and I felt like I needed to give you, the viewers, a better dance after last week.

  • Season 8 for me is the circus season’ ¦so much drama. From the sobby backstories to the show running over time to the addition of Kara to Adam’s awesome OTT-ness to the whole angel vs. devil thing with Adam and Danny

It sure was a circus. It was like Sanjaya multiplied by a gazillion. And don’t forget Norman Gentle, Bikini Girl, Tatiana, and maybe some other wack job I’ve left out. It was like the producer felt the show couldn’t hold its own on talent alone, and needed some contrived and artificial melodrama to punch up the slipping ratings, together with the real melodrama of Danny’s situation.

The odd thing is, Seasons 7 and 8 provided some of the best talent the program has ever seen, and contestants who didn’t make it into the top 2 or 3 may just have decent careers too…

  • They are only interested in creating sanitized, Disney-oriented talent for the bubble gum set. Same thing with Kradison (I don’t think Simon even wanted Adam in the AI8 competition, to judge by his attitude at Adam’s audition).

I don’t think they are really interested in Disney oriented talent. Rather, in Archie’s case, they thought he would be able to capture young female fans’ hearts if he moved on deep in the competition, which would gain more younger idol audience (since Idol viewers’ average age is 40).

Archie refused the offer from Disney last year and his goal is not becoming a Disney star. He toured with Demi simply because he needed to expand his fanbase to younger ones, just like Jordin toured with Jonas. Same goes to Kradison, too. Jive idols are not necessarily equal to Disney oriented singers.

  • They can foursome with Archie and Carrie and have a hootenany of a good time. Heck, it can be part of the xmas special. Putting the special, back in xmas special.

Or putting the x in xmas, of course

XXX that sucker. Going to find out who has been naughty and who has been nice. Oh wait, everyone’s been naughty.

I have never been this focused on one person ‘“ I’m having a love hate relationship with it. It’s fun and exciting watching him but sometimes I’m very sensitive to the nasty negative comments.

Agreed. I’m much more comfortable not taking anything seriously and making fun of everyone. I mean it’s AI, my caring about any part of it is beyond lame. Deeply distressing. I think I’ll go watch John and Edward doing “Oops I Did It Again,” again to really get my lulz back on.

  • I think I’ll go watch John and Edward doing ‘Oops I Did It Again,’ again to really get my lulz back on.

Am I missing out terribly on a big laugh? I didn’t watch it yet. But if it is good for a laugh, I’m in.

But considering what I bolded above, of your comments, and the fact that Season 7’s ratings were better than Season 6’s, I don’t get it! Talent won out in Season 7. It was an enormously talented season with a genuine, non-circus, purely-based-on-the-music competition. It did pretty well. So, why go for the circus in Season 8?

The only answer I can point to is that Nigel left and Ken Warwick — and whoever had been previously hamstrung from Nigel’s staff — broke through and wanted to make their mark by making the show even more of a reality/trainwreck program than a talent competition. And, I wouldn’t be surprised if Simon Cowell was a big part of that decision. Just consider that ridiculous house they made people audition in where they had to sing for their life. The group home the top 13 lived in which they hoped would generate drama and didn’t. And, the emphasis on the big judge entrances as well as the judges’ save!

The reality, as opposed to talent, folk finally were let loose to make this show a complete and total joke. Thank god, the contestants, their talent, and the voters did not cooperate with them.

Hopefully, we’ll get back to Season 7’s vibe in Season 9.

I’m not sure they wanted something sanitized, but they have been looking for the next teen sensation; something similar to the popularity and marketability (is that a word?) of Miley or the Jonas brothers. Simon has repeatedly stated he wants the the cutoff age to go younger. Problem is that the teenage winners (i.e. Jordon, Archie) are so much better than the young pop style so they are harder to market. I think Allison has a good chance.

  • Am I missing out terribly on a big laugh? I didn’t watch it yet. But if it is good for a laugh, I’m in.

You be the judge Ooops I laughed again. I think mj thought it was lulzy as well. Oh and I think it was on the Rachel Maddow show as well, discussing it.

It does have the most views of all the videos of XFactor and I think for just this reason.

  • I don’t think they are really interested in Disney oriented talent. Rather, in Archie’s case, they thought he would be able to capture young female fans’ hearts if he moved on deep in the competition, which would gain more younger idol audience (since Idol viewers’ average age is 40).

On my street, the average Idol viewer’s age is probably 85 (I live in Florida), and they loved Archie on AI7. Some people actually think Archie is an artist who is more believable doing material more suitable for people older than he is, I guess sort of like Josh Groban or someone like that.

I think Archie had captured young girls’ hearts long before the AI7 finals, and they were therefore already part of the AI demographic (like they are every year, probably why Coke is a big sponsor).

Archie was one of the most sanitized contestants in AI history, and elderly folks liked him just as much as the tween girls did. That’s why the show was promoting him so vigorously…they thought (correctly) that he would have broad appeal, and he still does, which I think explains the Christmas album.

  • Archie refused the offer from Disney last year and his goal is not becoming a Disney star.

Archie had an offer from Disney and he turned it down? But my understanding is that 19 has first dibs on offers and he wouldn’t be allowed to accept any other offers if 19 (i.e. Jive) wanted him. Yes?

  • But considering what I bolded above, of your comments, and the fact that Season 7’s ratings were better than Season 6’s, I don’t get it! Talent won out in Season 7. Season 7 didn’t do that much better than season 6 in the ratings. I don’t think that talent is enough to sustain the high ratings that AI had in his earlier years not with all the competition of hundreds of channels and the internet.

I think they are trying to make a show more pop oriented and that appeals to younger people with all the guest judges and Ellen, in that sense promoting Adam may be part of the strategy because he has an edgier image and they could need an entertainer like him to spice the image of the show.

It makes me feel kind of nostalgic because it seems that it takes away from what made the beauty of AI which is to see people like Kelly, Fantasia or Cook go from completely unknown during their auditions to top of the charts.

  • I don’t think they are really interested in Disney oriented talent. Rather, in Archie’s case, they thought he would be able to capture young female fans’ hearts if he moved on deep in the competition, which would gain more younger idol audience (since Idol viewers’ average age is 40).

I think you are right about AI wanting to expand its viewership to a younger audience. Why else would they have brought in Miley Cyrus for Idol Gives Back and the Jonas Brothers for the S7 finale (both of which I found unbearable to watch)?

  • You be the judge Ooops I laughed again.

LOL!! Oh, man, if I didn’t have someone telling me what that was from… I’d assume it was a parody of X-factor. That was so bad… it was definitely hilarious. Ha!

  • LOL!! Oh, man, if I didn’t have someone telling me what that was from’ ¦ I’d assume it was a parody of X-factor. That was so bad’ ¦ it was definitely hilarious. Ha!

I know! It’s one for the books. Ahhh. And they survived on that! Weren’t even in the bottom. As I said the night the show aired, who knew Great Britain had as much an appreciation for the lulz as I did. But thank goodness they do. Next week we get another performance. Yay! I don’t know how they are going to top that, but I’ll be looking forward to seeing them try.

  • I don’t know how they are going to top that, but I’ll be looking forward to seeing them try.

I can’t decide which was the best part. The speaking part (WTF)? The red suits? The “dancing”? Awesome. Ha!

  • Archie had an offer from Disney and he turned it down? But my understanding is that 19 has first dibs on offers and he wouldn’t be allowed to accept any other offers if 19 (i.e. Jive) wanted him. Yes?

I heard that offers started coming in after he sang IMAGINE. To prepare for the case where 19 didn’t make an offer for him, other recording companies competed against each other and made an offer as high as possible. Disney was rumored to be one of 7 recording companies that made an offer. Maybe what I said doesn’t exactly transfer what I meant to say. But David also refused to be part of High School Musical movie at that time. Rumors were that 19E should give him a matching offer for contract if they wanted him, and talks of much more money and 3 CDs were surfaced.

  • ^^ Yes, but 19 had to opt out first. They have first dibs on the Idols. So they wouldn’t have to match any other offers first.

    He did turn down HSM.

I also read at the time that he turned down an offer from Julliard to finish HS there.

  • Thanks for clarifying, ghl. What I don’t understand about this whole 19 having the “first right of refusal” business is wouldn’t that essentially mean that they can give an idol the worst and cheapest offer of them all and still that contestant has to accept it? Perhaps someone can enlighten me on that matter. Does 19’s offer have to match or exceed what others are offering or can they pretty much offer the bear minimum and still lock in that contestant as an indentured servant for the life of the contract?

ETA: I guess JRB answered my question.

  • However, theoretically, if 19’s offer did suck, I suppose that Archie could have refused to sign the contract. He would then have had to wait until August before he could entertain offers from other companies. He could have done this if he knew that Disney or some other entity had an even better offer waiting for him after he is released from the 19 obligation.

  • I’m not sure Ozarka. Does that give them any bargaining power? He still had to sign a contract with Jive. And that was negotiated. So maybe bidding wars help. Don’t really know. I don’t follow AI. Just what I’ve read here and there while following David. I’m sure others here know for certain.

  • For me, Season 7 will always be up there as my favorite. However, much can be said about Seasons 4 & 5. There was talent in most of the TOP 12 line-up.

Season 8 had too many weak singers to be counted up there as a favorite of mine. All the changes made by AI allowed people (at least three or four) who may not have made it in Season 7.

The strength of Adam and Allison cannot carry the whole season for me.
