Detroit band the Muggs cover Dylan, impress ‘American Band’ judges
Band makes strong mark in first week of competition on reality show

The judges raved about them last week at the Las Vegas auditions. But would they continue showing the love?

As part of the first night of full-blown competition on the new Fox reality show “The Next Great American Band,” Detroit rockers the Muggs unleashed a version of the Bob Dylan classic “Meet Me in the Morning,” along with an original tune, “Slow Curve.” All 12 of the bands had to cover a Dylan tune and perform a song of their own before hearing from the trio judges, Goo Goo Doll John Rzeznik, percussionist Sheila E. and music biz suit Ian (Dicko) Dickson.

And yeah, they again had good things to say about the gritty blues-rock trio:

The Next Great American Band: Episode 2 Recap

The Next Great American Band, like American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance, is very simple. No frills on tonight’s show, no celebrity guests, no filler. A perfect reality show. The Next Great American Band rolled out its top 12 bands tonight and, quite simply, let them play. Each of the finalist bands, over two hours, played two songs each, one original and one Bob Dylan cover. Yep, the theme tonight was Bob Dylan covers. Some were good, some were all right, a couple were great. Overall, FOX has corralled an impressive group of bands………

The Next Great American Band - Franklin Bridge And Sixwire Early Favorites

On the second episode of The Next Great American Band, the top twelve bands performed two songs each in front of the judges. One of the songs was an original composition and the other song was a song by Bob Dylan…….

‘The Next Great American Band’ does Dylan

Covering someone else’s song can be a tricky thing. Sometimes it works brilliantly — think Talking Heads doing “Take Me To The River,” or Johnny Cash doing “Hurt” — and sometimes it’s painful (see: any cover by William Shatner) On The Next Great American Band, our competitors have to interpret another artist’s work (this week: Bob Dylan) as well as performing something of their own. Let’s see how they did…..

ENTERTAINMENT: ‘American Band’ contestant has local connections

A man with Lockport connections and his bandmates are reaching for the stars on the new Fox TV reality show, “The Next Great American Band.”

Michael Crowe plays lead guitar for Tres Bien, a Florida-based band chosen as one of the top 12 bands for the reality competition.

Michael and his bandmates — Mickey Bostinto, Ryan Metcalf and Cody Wilson — will face the public vote tonight for the first time.

The show, from the producers of “American Idol,” invites the public to vote for their favorite bands. The band with the lowest number of votes will be kicked off every week.

Though Michael and his sister, Jessica, grew up in Florida, his parents — Douglas and Sue — are Lockport natives. His grandparents, Dick and Joan Sheppard and Barbara Palmer, live in Lockport, along with several aunts and uncles……

Boulder maybe you should send your bedpost lyrics to David Foster, I’m sure he’d love to record that with Katharine.

LOL Lisa @ the video for Nevada. If I could just win the powerball dammit!

Koolmomma and I made it back safe and sound from seeing Blake Shelton in Tunica, MS last night. Great show for any country fans on the blog. Since it was a casino, it was just him, no opener..however during the encore he brought out his girlfriend Miranda Lambert (came in 3rd Nashville Star season 1) and she sang one of her songs and joined him on one of his. Anyhow..other than the screamer directly next to me…we had an awesome time :)

Re: Bo vs. Taylor and being dropped. The main difference is that Taylor was the winner, Bo was not. RCA might be willing to give the winner one more try, while the runner-up could have only had a one shot deal. OR, Bo may have bought out his contract, which is a possibility. OR they may have mutually agreed to part ways because of artistic differences. Whatever the reason, Bo’s second CD is so much better than the first, it was worth whatever he had to do to get out of that contract.

Again, Taylor is not with RCA—he’s on the Arista/jRecords Label, along with Carrie, Ruben, and Fantasia.

Heh. I’m surprised you didn’t have an involuntary arm spasm, dcd. “Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to smack you upside your head. I’m violently allergic to screamers.” Glad you had a safe trip and fun time nonetheless.

That’s a fantastic idea, Lisa. Who knows what David lost when his studio was damaged by the recent Malibu fires. He might be in need of some new song ideas. :wink_wp:

Was “I’m Too Sexy” your background music while putting up the curtains?

Irregardless of what label Taylor is signed to, the underlying principle remains the same imho. Plus, similar rumors have been running around for months. I’d take it with a grain of salt. However, if either Ruben or Taylor have been dropped, given the current state of the music business these days, it’s not exactly a kiss of death…

Unfortunately, I don’t think Light of Doom will have the opportunity to sing “Honky Tonk Chanukah as the first band voted off of NGAB. I think they will be around for a little while. I don’t know how many people were voting but I do know that vftw was voting, and voting for Light of Doom.

Just to clarify, RCA, Arista, Jive and about a billion others are ALL under the same Sony BMG umbrella so it’s hardly worth freaking out if someone mentions RCA instead of Arista.

The point being made is that unless you sell units Clive is going to drop kick you.

  8. 58 istersay Oct 27th, 2007 at 4:52 pm

so it’s hardly worth freaking out if someone mentions RCA instead of Arista.

You consider me mentioning a simple fact freaking out? I know they are all part of Sony BMG.

Oh well, it doesn’t matter to me if they do drop Taylor or Ruben, it won’t stop them from doing their music, that’s what matters.

The coming idol season has one great singing talent I know for sure, an awesome tone, often making people cry on sad songs, can do most any genre, harmonize with about anyone, humble, gracious and kind………….hopefully the song selection will be there as this will be a treat for the fans of idol………at 13 she got standing ovations…….. comments like….a star is being born….she is going to develop into someone special……..so fans you have someone to look forward to, and for the critics sit back and enjoy this artist

  14. 64 hezzer19 Oct 27th, 2007 at 5:48 pm

Yo Waynekona, who was giving her the standing ovations? Her parents?

  15. 65 xoxoyc Oct 27th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

I for one am very pleased if Katharine does a different genre of music for her next CD- she has a real talent with her voice that is more suited to music that is not necessarily top 40.

Also, I was very happy to see her that 1st single “Over It” went gold this week from digital downloads. Course I don’t actually expect cheap RCA to actually certify it or anything.

  16. 66 Nevada Oct 27th, 2007 at 6:15 pm

    In related news:

Superstar music producer David Foster is in the market for a new recording studio after his old one was destroyed in the wildfires that have ravaged southern California.

One of the fires burned through 730 hectares of the celebrity-studded city of Malibu on Sunday, where the Victoria-born Foster has a nine-hectare estate.

  17. 67 Nevada Oct 27th, 2007 at 6:21 pm

And it’s slightly disingenuous to suggest that RCA is “cheap” after they advanced what appears to have been an extremely generous production fund for Katharine’s debut CD which allowed her to work with several of today’s hottest producers.

Ahem, Boulder….there are new curtains up.

  21. 71 xoxoyc Oct 27th, 2007 at 6:49 pm

RCA did a decent job with the first single from Kat’s album. They could have released it a little earlier and they waited way too long to release the video. They took what I call a very cheap approach to her 2nd single- again waiting way too long to release the video and waiting until Over It was way down the charts before they even announced the second single which had very little promotion.

Had they duplicated the effort with Love Story the album may have had better success. I think the fact that Over It went gold is proof that the promotion really does work. RCA did wimp out for whatever reason.

  22. 72 Lu Oct 27th, 2007 at 6:52 pm

    “Honky Tonk Chanukah”

We’ve got a hit on our hands folks. Beesims and Boulder - make sure you get your royalties. Better not let Clive get his hands on this. Elliott doing country - I’m going out drankin’.

XO you are kidding right? A joke for old times sake?

  24. 74 Nevada Oct 27th, 2007 at 7:08 pm

And if wishes were horses (or ponies!), beggars would ride.

Virtually every Idol fan out there spends an inordinate amount of time complaining about Sony BMG and/or 19 and/or the manager de jour for their chosen one, along with second guessing every single move they make or don’t make.

Never mind all of the articles from early 2007 in which Katharine claimed that she had control over her career and was calling the shots…

But let’s see how it goes now that Katharine has managed to escape the corporate clutches of Sony BMG. It should be interesting to see her trajectory since she’s free of Clive.

    I’m guessing…skyrockets!

  25. 75 xoxoyc Oct 27th, 2007 at 7:13 pm

It is not a joke that RCA did not promote “Love Story.” But I’ve never been impressed with RCA as a label. They don’t do a very good job with any of the AI contestants and even the albums by Christina Aguilera and Avril Lavigne didn’t get the promotion they should have IMO.

Honestly I don’t have a lot of time to spend on following any of the Idol contestants anymore- just saw this news posted of her rumored switch to Warner and thought it was interesting.

If the rumor is true Foster will do a great job with Katharine and I’m anxious to hear the new songs. I love to hear Kat sing “Mary Jane” and her duet with Bocelli was fantastic so this has potential to be a great pairing.

I bought Carrie’s new CD today and it’s pretty good. I like it a lot- she’s going to pull some huge first week numbers I’m real happy for her.

  26. 76 Nevada Oct 27th, 2007 at 7:25 pm

A basic tenet of promotion is that you shouldn’t spend more than you could reasonably expect in return in terms of profit.

Katharine’s debut album was marginal in quality and content, and based on the reactions of the less-invested of her fans, it wasn’t even close to what they expected or wanted from her.

Throwing good money after bad wouldn’t have helped…

  27. 77 hezzer19 Oct 27th, 2007 at 7:37 pm

Clive just emailed me (as Kirsten appears to be still out of town) and said that he is kicking himself for not choosing the picture of *** in just the boots for the CD cover.

Screw the latkes, I want some real hash browns
Hey Sus, please stop yer cryin’ and put the knife down

Re: Taylor being dropped we have actually heard rumours from those talking to Mr. Merchguy that Taylor is set to buy out his recording contract. He’s put The Fall on his myspace page, is releasing a self-produced DVD, so this seems like the next logical step. But again these are merely rumours ( or “speculation” as Mr Merchguy was quick to counter after this nugget of info got out on the Boogie).
