Some theatergoers make best of strike situation
….Around the corner, Steve Wilson, from Columbus, S.C., was standing outside the Broadway Theatre where “The Color Purple” was shut down. He looked despondent, but his wife, Teresa, found compensation.

Boomers’ favorites lead in ticket sales
We’re a little bit country, a little bit rock ‘n’ roll.
But a little less Top 40.
At least when it comes to the concerts we attend….
….A number of factors — baby boomer nostalgia, familiar hits, the iconic status of these stars and a desire to be part of a big event — helped bring in big crowds at concerts by Eric Clapton, Bob Seger, Billy Joel, Elton John and other classic acts.
That’s a feat neither Christina Aguilera or Gwen Stefani achieved. Stefani’s concert at the Omaha arena drew just 9,000, compared with a sellout of nearly 16,900 for Billy Joel.
Despite platinum records and radio hits, the high-profile pop stars can’t seem to compete with the older acts.
Part of the reason for the mediocre box-office showing of Top 40 acts is ticket prices….

And we wonder why people can’t spell…..
This song title from Blake’s album gives critics and (more importantly) snarkers SOOOOO much ammunition. Bring on December 4th!!!!!!
That’s why americans can’t spell the ‘artists’ pinch all the u’s.
LMAO Lisa!!
Blake’s tagline on his myspace is “Some Say Silence Is Golden, I Choose Noise.” It’s been like that since before AI. “I Choose Noise” is actually the name of an album by one of his favorite artists, Hybrid.
Makes it no less snarkable.
ETA:
It’s not as if most people (read critics, not fangirlies) go to an artist’s myspace prior to writing a review of an album.
I realize that, and I don’t care if people snark on it or whatever. I was just pointing it out where it came from. *shrug*
I think star was just trying to clarify where the tagline came from–nothing more nothing less.
There really isn’t a reason for this to turn into an argument.
Ya all are fangirls/boys of someone, or you probably would not be here.
The important thing about the Melinda Doolittle piece (WKRN) is that Phil Stacey has signed with Lyric Street Records!
(He says so on the video)(I don’t recall if you have mentioned this yet)
And I was merely pointing out that because something is “explained” on an artist’s website make it no less snarkable. Not trying to flame anything.
Geesh….where has all the fun gone?
And no, I am not the fangirly type…..originally came here for the brilliant snark, and little else.
ETA:
The above question is rhetorical, requires no response.
Phil has mentioned that in a few interviews.
So where is the official press release? :)
Haven’t seen one as of yet.
Boulder, I really like you, but I think you and I don’t always agree on what “fun” is.
MJ…LOL, your loss. :)
I should probably put that Phil news on the front page…
It seems as if they have become passé. Given that we had to wait how many months for a press release on this year’s winner/runner-up being signed, I suspect that we won’t officialy hear about Phil being signed until 3 months after his album drops.
In any event, go Phil!
MJ:
Your lips are so pretty today. I love your lips.
With that, I am out for the day…have to finish up the last minute gardening before the weather turns tomorrow.
Y’all have a rainbows and kittens kind of day.
That’s great. And there are people who visit here for other reasons. Somehow, there has to be room for everybody.
I ask that people respect each other on this blog, and not flame or bait each other. Flame the Idols if you want, but not your fellow posters. That’s really my number #1 rule. That’s it. So simple, really.
It’s official since it did come out of his mouth. Maybe they have to be closer to actually putting out an album for the companies to make an announcement? Even their management company (Chris and Phil’s) hasn’t put them up on their website yet. “No Respect”!
I really like Blake’s single “Break Anotha.” It’s very current, fresh if you will, and I think it’ll be a hit. The sound is as far removed from Idol as it can get too, which may get it played just because… I’m excited for Blake. He may be this year’s breakout star, given the right promotion, etc. Of course, I’ve been wrong before!
Heh. Bobby Bennett?
SI’S FEAR FACTOR
SIMON Cowell is terrified Leona Lewis will be knocked off the top spot this week –by the bloke who wrote her song, Bleeding Love.
The man behind the tune is Ryan Tedder. He’s frontman with OneRepublic, the guitar band who are at No 4 in the charts with Apologize – their tune with Timba-land, 36.
Ryan, 28, told me: “I met up with Simon at the weekend. He told me the one song he was nervous about was Apologize.
“He said that if Leona loses No 1 to anyone, it’ll be to us and that he’s watching the situation carefully.
Daily Star
RTWD!! ;)
LMAO. I love it!
No, seriously. At least, RTUSD. I wouldn’t be surprised if, in a few months’ time, half of the Billboard top 10 are songs he wrote or produced or had SOME kind of participation with. This man is about to be everywhere… even more so than he already is.
The Official UK Singles Chart : 11.11.2007

Is it wrong of me to hope that Apologize does indeed kick Leona off of #1 - for oh so many reasons?
If anyone cares, from HDD’s Rumor Mill:
FOURTH QUARTER RUSH: Roc-A-Fella’s Jay-Z will top next week’s chart, with American Gangster racking up some 425-450k in sales, more than enough to beat back Wal-Mart’s Eagles at 340-360k. The rest of the Top 10 and then some at last shows some life, with Jive/ZLG’s Chris Brown (300-310k), Pearl’s Garth Brooks (220-230k) and Arista Nashville’s CMA winner Carrie Underwood (125-135k) rounding out a healthy Top 5. Jive’s Britney Spears (95-105k), Reprise’s Josh Groban (90-95k) and Ruff Ryders/J’s debuting Cassidy and Suretone/ Geffen’s new chart entry Angels & Airwaves (both 65-70k) will all be in the Top 10, with Lyric Street’s Rascal Flatts (60-65k), Decca’s Andrea Bocelli (60-65k), Rounder’s Plant/Krauss (55-60k), Disney’s High School Musical 2 (50-55k) and Universal Republic’s Colbie Caillat all in the mix as well. Here’s a link to Ruben singing “Flying without wings” and “I need an angel” three months ago. I’m sharing just to show you the fact that he has lost a LOT of weight (a lot for him, anyway) and looks super.

This might change over time, assuming today’s “stars” can last long enough to build a decent catalog of material. Part of the problem is artists trying to build a viable tour around a “hit” or two…sure, the audience will sing along to the songs they’re familiar with, but after that, then what?
Colbie Caillat??? Please — wake me when it’s over. Now that’s a signing that has me mystified.
Jennifer Hudson as one of “Top Ten Most Fascinating…” makes me think some money may have changed hands. Talented yes. Fascinating? Meh. If Babra Wawa was a bit more honest in her selections she would have chosen someone like Britney instead. For good or bad, she has captured the public’s as well as the media’s attention this year in a big way.
Blake’s track titles are just too precious by half. And tedious too. It was attention-getting when Prince began to do it 27 years ago with ‘Jack U Off’ on Controversy. If the titles with this affectation are his writing credits then I suggest he try to be a little more original. Ooops - sorry. My bad. Forgot this is Blake Lewis.
I’m more than a little verklempt from the kind comments posted here yesterday. My thanks.
“high-profile pop stars can’t seem to compete…”
Many (not all, there are exceptions) of today’s high-profile pop stars don’t come across well in a live performance or concert setting. Many are not musicians (or arguably even ‘arists’) but products of the recording studio process and technology from the very beginning and don’t have the chops to carry anything beyond that.
I think Carrie is an excellent country singer but very boring. I guess she’s selling alot of CDs but it’s kind of like cheering on McDonald’s 12th billion burger sold.
When the boomer acts stop touring, the effect on the business will be dramatic because there’s not much around to take their place. Top 40 doesn’t even sell that many albums not to mention selling out concerts.
Another article on a growing industry trend - Band as Brand: “…a rising new model for developing talent, one in which artists share not just revenue from their album sales but concert, merchandise and other earnings with their label…Commonly known as “multiple rights” or “360” deals…In return for that bigger share, labels might give artists more money up front…touring subsidies…perhaps, artists might be allowed more time to develop the chops needed to build a long career.”
Another excellent article, RSF. I had to smile at this, though:
Many talent managers view 360s as a thinly veiled money grab and are skeptical that the labels, with their work forces shrinking amid industry-wide cost cutting, will deliver on their promises of patience.
“That’s a hard speech for many people to buy into,” said Bruce Flohr, a longtime talent executive who signed the Dave Matthews Band to RCA Records and now works for ATO Records, an independent label. “You can speak to me that you’re going to work a record for 18 months. You’re going to work a record for 18 months when it’s selling 420 copies six months from now? Come on — really?”
Little do they know that fans expect the label to “work a record” in perpetuity, because, you know, skyrockets happen…
I bought Jay-Z’s CD today and it’s great. Much better than his “comeback” effort of last year. I love the retro-70’s soul vibe that he presents as back up to the rap. Of course, the Neptunes are involved, and that’s never a bad thing. ;-)
LOL. I’m indifferent to Leona, but I am anxiously awaiting One Republic’s album.
LOL Nevada. I think it is all about the money. It pretty much always is. Unless you can sell enough music, tickets, or merchandise in the near-term, few label execs are likely to give a rat’s ass about your artistic potential.
