‘American Idol’ alums have busy month of album releases, tours
What are Matt Giraud’s Season 8 “American Idol” cohorts up to these days? Plenty.
Champ Kris Allen will release his album Tuesday, runnerup Adam Lambert is hot on his heels with a Nov. 23 debut, and Allison Iraheta drops her first disc Dec. 1. Not to be outdone, Danny Gokey’s label, RCA Nashville, released his first single on his Web site months before his album will hit stores in mid-2010.
Listening to their first singles reminded me how much variety — and talent — made up “American Idol’s” most recent season. Each wildly different tune is a potential hit, and there’s not a dud in the bunch. Here’s my take:

Tragedy has kept American Idol winner David Cook, at Casino Rama Monday, on an even keel
David Cook has had the highest of career highs and the lowest of personal lows in the past year.
After auditioning only at the last minute, he went on to actually win the 2008 American Idol competition with his distinctive rock wail.
Following the victory, he had 11 songs debut on the Billboard Hot 100, the highest number of new songs by one artist in a single week since The Beatles in 1964.
“It’s pretty incredible,” Cook, 26, said down the line from Milwaukee prior to a show Monday at Casino Rama north of Toronto, his final stop on a short eastern swing of Canada. “I refuse to wrap my head around that because it’s a little strange.”
David Cook feels ‘American Idol’ pressure
David Cook is part of an exclusive club — one that comes with 30 million potential fans and alums such as Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.
He’s an “American Idol” winner and there are only seven others like him.
Cook has fared pretty well to this point in his post-”Idol” career.
His self-titled album sold more than a million copies, peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard charts and producing the hit singles “Lights On” and “Come Back to Me.”
Cook followed the album release with an ambitious touring schedule that’s had him and his band on the road since February. He recently sat for a few questions.
Pacquiao-Cotto Fight: Ramiele Malubay Sings
For fans of boxing and American Idol, the two fused together thanks to the help of former contestant Ramiele Malubay. She opened the Manny Pacquiao and Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto event by singing ‘ Star Spangled Banner’ , which took place at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas on Saturday night.
According to All Your TV, Malubay moved to the Philippines after being the ninth finisher of season seven of the show. She decided to move to try and pursue her dream of a musical career, as she had several Idol commitments to keep.
Galleria Ice Spectacular and tree-lighting
Shopping season is officially open. The Galleria tree is lit.
But before the flip was switched on the 55-foot tree Saturday night, shoppers and spectators were treated to an Ice Spectacular sponsored by Cadillac.
American Idol finalist Diana DeGarmo opened the show with The Christmas Song. Pair skaters Gord Willemse and Lisa Grice performed two exciting routines with lots of lifts; the audience held its breath as he spun her around with her head dangerously close to the ice.
Going public with cancer battle, actress Kathy Bates aims to encourage others
When Kathy Bates returns this week to her hometown, the Memphis-born Oscar winner will be applauded not just for her status as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after performers but for what might be the most challenging and inspirational role of her career: cancer survivor.
Bates, 61, will do just that as the keynote speaker Friday at the 8th annual Methodist Healthcare Foundation Cancer Center Luncheon, a benefit for the Methodist Hospice Residence, an East Memphis facility scheduled to open in 2010 that will provide medical care and home-style comfort for terminally ill patients. She’ll also discuss her career and her Memphis background.
The luncheon begins at 11:45 a.m. Tickets are $100 each, available by calling 516-0500. “American Idol” Season 8 contestant Alexis Grace will perform.
X Factor: Sinitta reveals stressed out Simon Cowell is ‘comfort eating’ and hooked on Angel Delight
X Factor boss Simon Cowell has become hooked on Angel Delight as he struggles to cope with the backlash over Jedward.
He was so rattled by the row over the twins that he’s started comfort eating his favourite childhood pudding, according to best pal Sinitta.
‘He has a two-packet-a-day problem or habit ‘“ it’s his comfort food,’ said mum-of-two Sinitta, 41.
‘He walks round with a packet of cigarettes and a packet of Angel Delight. He will have a bowl of pink Angel Delight at home or even in the back of a limo.
‘It’s very 80s and he’s an 80s child.’
Why Simon Cowell is the real winner of X Factor
It was the moment that Simon Cowell ‘“ and the public ‘“ had been waiting for. The X-Factor’s self-styled Mr Nasty, and the one judge who had heaped constant criticism onto Dublin-born twins John and Edward Grimes in every single show, finally had his chance to kick them into touch last Sunday.
So when Cowell failed to eliminate the teenage singing sensation from Cardiff, known to their growing army of fans as “Jedward”, the horrified look on his fellow judges’ faces said it all. Was it a fleeting moment of madness on Cowell’s part ‘“ or simply another step in his grand plan to make even more money?
Simon Cowell’s little-known sister on his wealth, childhood and why none of his girlfriends could match up to his mother
‘His wealth and fame are so beyond any sort of normality,’ she says, in her first-ever interview.
‘He is busy in a way that even very wealthy people with high-flying careers are not. Simon is lovely, very family-orientated and I know he likes nothing better than to go home to his mum for a roast dinner. It is hard not to remember him as the cheeky, boisterous and mischievous little boy he once was.

The Sept. 29 tsunami killed more than 100 people in the South Pacific and left hundreds of others homeless.
The island of Samoa holds a special place in Vaifanua’s heart. She grew up there as a young girl and lived near the villages where many young childen died while they were on their way to school. “My heart aches for those who have lost loved ones. This is just a little something I can do to make their holidays a little brighter,” she said.

Perhaps. Conan may be a bigger audience, but its not necessarily a HAC rock music buying audience. The Vh1 countdown crowd may be more target rich for someone like Kris. YMMV.
Boston Globe review of Kris’ album
http://www.boston.com/ae/music/cd_reviews/articles/2009/11/16/kris_allen_kris_allen/?rss_id=Boston.com+–+Top+arts+and+entertainment+news
Jive played with the hand they were dealt. Kris had to finish recording the album. You can’t ship an album that’s not finished. Jive knows that it takes a while for a single to get up the chart. They probably wanted the song to have radio support when the album dropped.
RCA chose to drop later. They either don’t feel that radio support is necessary when this album when it drops or they thought the song would climb faster (like a more established artist’s might). Or possibly, they had difficulty choosing a single or the release got tangled up with TfM’s release. Who knows?
I’m not criticizing either label, but I sometimes wonder what they are up to. Jive has chosen to take the more established strategy of single releases, so it’s likely seeing fewer people wondering what they are up to. People can just say, well, that’s what labels do (except for that sneaky Friday release to iTunes for which they received a lot of questioning about because it was not standard procedure).
It crossed my mind that that might have been a sneaky test of the size of Kris’ hard core fanbase. Didn’t we (at mj’s) know about the release date a few days ahead of time? It would be more important to know that than to worry about first week sales, given their strategy.
I agree. And Adam has been busy, also.
BTW, I truly wasn’t being sarcastic. I am thrilled to hear that RCA is not behind on promotion. It’s good news to me. No sarcasm!
Jive had that weird Friday release, crappy single cover, and didn’t put up a banner. Allison’s roll-out has been strange and a complete failure so far.
RCA has had just as many problems-not to mention the iTunes craziness.
So, the Boston Globe finds Kris’s album unadventurous, and the LA Times recommends it as more adventurous than John Mayer, someone who reinvents his style every few years. This is why I don’t usually pay attention to reviews.
One recommends Red Guitar, with Kris’s most heartfelt emotions and metaphorical lyrics, the other likes Alright With Me, a fun pop confection. Sounds to me like an album that has something for everyone.
Well let’s try posting this again (stupid network issues)
But here’s what strikes me as different about that first lack of promotion for Kris, is that it won’t be the three weeks leading up into his album release on Nov. 17th. The single was dropped and when he had time, Kris started promoting it and he had weeks to do so before his album released. Unlike Kris, Adam wasn’t spending time after his single dropped finishing his album, the album was already wrapped up by that point. The only thing Adam has been slated to do these past few weeks has been 2012 stuff and general Adam stuff. And nothing scheduled to promote the single, but at it’s initial drop.
Anyhew, I know there is nothing any of us can do to change RCA or Jive’s actions, and certainly we probably all know each other’s stances by this part. But this was a new piece of information for me, so it interested me enough to comment on.
Anyhew, like what the LA times had to say about Kris, not so happy with the Boston Globe. And a lot more people out there like Red Guitar than I do. For me, “I Need To Know,” is most quintessentially what I like about Kris Allen. But hey, different strokes n’ all.
Oh and I saw that link on the side of the LA Times about the re-issuing of Space Jam Air Jordans. Man that bring back some good memories. I loved my Bulls in the ’90s. So good. sigh.
Bwah! I thought for sure the link would be to this epic piece of Cook banter: “Did you come here to see the hat or did you come here . . . for thissssss?”
Or even this?
Lots of yummy professional pictures lately, and a great review from Dallas, but seriously David doesn’t have face melting guitar skills. Neal certainly has them in spades, however. David has a face melting voice and eerrmmm ass
It’s splitting hairs at this point and ultimately doesn’t matter – a bounce is a bounce regardless of where it comes from. But I have to agree with Tinawina. Based on timing and longevity of the bump I think where LLWD is sitting now is more a result of the VH1 countdown premiere and AT40 than Conan. A Tonight Show bump would have been visible through the night and morning, and would have been shorter-lived. Kris didn’t really start to move on iTunes until after VH1’s Sunday re-run (there’s also one on Tuesday) and Ryan’s show being syndicated out to its 50O+ stations. I think you guys will find VH1 a surprisingly good sales driver – Cook’s singles and album consistently saw a bump every single time either of his videos appeared on the top 20 countdown. I suspect it will be the same for this year’s crew.
Holy crap. I’m supposed to be asleep, and I just got hit with the ginormous time suck that is watching DC’s “banter” videos on YT. Gah!
I forgot how much I liked him as a person. I’d love to hang out with the guy. I just wish his music was more my style.
Not a John Mayer fan, but that was harsh.
ETA: this was the whole review?
http://biturl.cc/WB3
LOL, not good for Mayer, but nice for Kris. Although I’ll probably pick up Mayer’s album too.
(The link just takes you to the entertainment page. I didn’t see the review)
LOL That’s all they had to say about Kris vs. Mayer? Kris wasn’t full of himself yet? Not a reason to buy either IMO. But then they aren’t advising buying either one. They’re just saying if you’re going to talk about one of the guys, talk about Kris. Rolling my eyes here. What’s the point of even putting this on their website?
“Alright With Me” is the single I’m stuck on right now. Kris’s live performance of LLWD was outstanding. The way Kris sang it on Conan was sounded better to me than on the one I heard on the internet. I was just stunned. When he was finished I thought “perfect”.
I disagree, jms. They are saying that Kris’ cd is more adventurous and the music isn’t full of itself. Definite dis on Mayer, but comparing Kris in a favorable light to Mayer could never be a bad thing. Mayer sells a ton of music. And the point about putting it on the website is to get hits; which is the reason most things are posted.
Can I rant here? Supposedly, Kris’ album will be released on Nov. 17, which is a few hours from now. And yet, I still have no idea if it will be released here in my country (The Philippines) at the same day as it does in the U.S. Darn. I hope I wont have to wait a few days more than the rest of the world — that would be too much.
Wish me luck tomorrow.
“Like John Mayer’s brooding soulfulness and dark good looks but would prefer to give your money to someone who’s less of a d!ck? Try Kris Allen!”
Hey, I’ll take it. Kris Drizzle!
yes, comparing Kris in a favorable light to Mayer is quite good.
Yeah Kris Drizzle!
anyone has a link for this morning Kris interview?
Did anyone else here hear Adam’s WDYWFM on Elvis Duran this morning? I was a little unsure of their conclusions. One dj liked the words. One said they definitely liked it better than the “2012 song” and FYI.
They talked about playing it w/o letting folks know who was singing it. It was an interesting conversation. Two women callers called in and both liked it. One said it had an 80’s sound the the dj agreed.
cookcricket-I didn’t hear the song, but find the dj comments nice to know. I wonder if Whataya Want From Me might really be the second single from Adam’s album. I looked at the Mediabase spin chart. For Sat. 55 spins and Sun. 20 spins.
So late to the party that the cleaners have left but you guyz! The comments on Cook’s concert photos and paens to his uh, rearview just cracked me up.
And oh my word did I just pontificate on Cook’s ass?
His ass is a thing of beauty to me, and any diminishment thereof would be a tragedy of Global proportions.
I actually can still remember the first time on the tv they did like a 360 revolving camera thing and I was like oooo, that booty. And that was when he was still dressing from his distressing “Last Week’s Laundry” collection.
*is ashamed* too
