But the show’s overseers have recently loosened the creative reins, or at least given the appearance of doing so. Both “Cook” and “Archuleta” offer previously forbidden glimpses, however brief, of the artists’ actual personalities: Cook is Chris Cornell as a Midwestern bar singer; Archuleta seems to be made entirely of fluffy unicorns and Skittles.

But both “David Cook” and “David Archuleta” are better albums than the tone-deaf show souvenirs most contestants are routinely saddled with.

I went to the last SYTYCD show of the tour in Tampa tonight and it was great. I’ll do a recap later, but I just have to say a few things.

- Spense is amazing. She was not able to go to the show tonight, but she did get tickets for our (huge) group coming from Orlando, and not only that, but gave me and Sarah-friend #1 her front row seats since she couldn’t go.
- Twitch was injured and not able to dance. He said he injured himself LAST NIGHT. DAMN IT. They pretty much just cut all of his dances, except that Thayne did the Russian Trepak with Joshua.
- Courtney cried just about every time she was on stage. It was sweet.
- Mark is even HAWTER when dancing in person. OMG. That’s all I will say because anything else could quickly devolve into “did I just say that out loud?” type information. Heh.
- Courtney & Gev are A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E.
- Joshua & Katee dancing together = Love. That is all.
- Will, in the opening number, looked DIRECTLY at me and grinned. Set the stage for the rest of the night. I could not wipe the cheesy grin off my face.
- Chelsie H is really, really pretty and really, really good live. She cried a lot too. She and Mark are just great dancing together.
- I WISH I HAD A BODY LIKE CHELSEA TRAILLE’S.
- I was not complaining about Thayne’s perma-smile, because he’s actually very cute, and did a really good job filling in various spots in the show. And he also smiled that not-so-annoying smile at us – a couple times.
- Gev also smiled and waved at us. (I’m telling you. Spense is awesome. These were totally OMG seats.)
- Sarah-friend #1 got LOTS of pics. If they turn out well, I’ll put them in a photobucket for everyone to see.

Idol-bashing L.A. Times blogger is now a fangirl

Whoa- Ann Powers, who used Cook as one of her prime examples of “Flyover Rock”, has been Cookified? Her article/review is the most positive and sympathetic that I’ve seen so far. And her favorite song is A Daily Anthem, the one song on the album David wrote himself. I feel like I’m in some alternate universe, she speaks so highly of him, his talents, and his cowriters. Never underestimate the power of the Cookie to win people over, even if they think they can’t stand him to begin with.

Yes, and Ken Barnes at USA Today also said this about Cook’s prospects with TOML in comparison to past coronation songs:

David C. is likely to surpass Taylor on this list (that should happen in a couple of weeks), and he might have a shot at Ruben and Carrie, but picking up another 360,000 downloads to beat Kelly has to be considered an outside possibility.

The rainbow sailed past Kelly two weeks ago, and will easily surpass Clay’s single this week (in addition to crossing the Platinum barrier either this week or next). That will make TOML the highest-selling coronation song ever, based on Ken’s attempt to equalize the apples/oranges comparison of physical vs. download sales. And Dave did it in less than 6 months. Kelly and Clay have sold their totals over 5-6 years (Kelly released AMLT in 2002 and has sold an additional 160K copies since 2006).

TOML isn’t close to done yet, and I actually still think LO may have longer legs than many are predicting. But we’re a long way from knowing whether any of the S7 contestants will be successful commercially. That’s just not something that can be judged by a few singles or first-week debut album sales.

Hey, my kid downloaded Touch My Hands today. It’s the only song on David Archuleta she likes even though she realizes the lyrics are kind of lame.

Hey guys, I know i’m a newbie so most of you wont believe me, but whatever. David did an interview with my radio station of KDWB and they asked him about future singles, and he said they’re for sure releasing “Touch My Hand” and “A little too not over you” and based on the success of those three will determine if there will be a forth single.

Dang it Jive, why do you play with my feelings???…. Why do you insist in TMH being a single??? WHY??? WHYYYYYY?????!!!!! :

- During the commercial break, he was talking to Bonnie and pointing to his shirt — apparently, he’s also giving her his light blue Oxford shirt.
- He got so many screams that Kathy Griffth curled up on the floor and covered her ears.
- The studio is really close to where the fires are, so the air is smokey, so David left right after the show ended, because it wasn’t good for his voice, of course.

I hope so, ALNTOY is a great song… the message and everything… I will be the happy if that were the second single… but I won ´t get mad if Barriers or My Hands were in this position either…

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m finding the album reviews for DC/DC fascinating . . . . Virtually every song has been mentioned by name and both loved and hated by reviewers at this point. LOL They also either love the recordà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s eclectic nature or think it makes the album sound unfocussed. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m surprised about that one- Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve always thought that ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a good thing for an album to have different types of songs. . . .

And could that ExpressNightOut writer have pulled out any more tired facts from Davidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s AI run or compared him to any more artists? He even managed an Archuleta comparison!

Although I also find it odd that some reviewers are taking the eclectic nature of the album as a negative rather than a positive, I can also see where they are coming from. Generally, I get exhausted listening to albums from artists that have signature sounds but not a lot of variety because by Track 5 I am sick and tired of listening to (what seems like) the same damn song. However, I can also understand that Cook’s album is probably breaking some unspoken rule that singer/songwriters have to have a signature style that is recognizable by the time a song gets to the chorus. I personally hear it thoughout most of this album, but I can forgive the reviewers for not quite getting there yet. I know that many fans who know Cook via Analog Heart were up in arms right away (even when all we had were the lyrics) when they heard Light On because they knew he didn’t write the song. And I also know that many of those same fans breathed a huge sigh of relief when they heard “Declaration” on SNL because they knew right away that Cook wrote (or co-wrote) that particular song. For fans familiar with his prior work, there is no mistaking that combination of music and lyrics that is signature Cook.

As for the comparisons in the ExpressNightOut/Washington Post review, although I find the review enjoyable and quite fair, I find it funny that he compared “Declaration” to the Foo Fighters’ “This is a Call” and compared “Lie” to the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris.” Mainly because Johnny Reznick co-wrote on “Declaration” and the Nixons’ Zac Malloy co-wrote on “Lie.” So now, it seems that Reznick is a Grohl wannabe and Malloy and Espionage are Reznick wannabes. Who knew?

There is a new David Archuleta survey at RateTheMusic. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s asking for opinions on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“A Little Too Not Over Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬  using a clip that is 1:46 long.

Given the higher sales of “A Little Too Not Over You” at iTunes, there has been some speculating that the reason ALTNOY is being surveyed is to possibly exchange it for “Touch My Hand” as the next single. Celeste, you may get your wish after all. :smile2_tb:

Oh, and there is that matter of the punishing vocal runs that David tosses off as easily as breathing in this song. In fact, overall, there are times when listening to the album and paying close attention to the vocals that I don’t think I am listening to a human at all but rather a creature that was manufactured to sing. It can be downright frightening at times how precise and mature this kid’s vocals are.

dick clark productions President Orly Adelson announced today that ABC will broadcast the “2008 American Music Awards Red Carpet Live!” a special pre-show that will feature an exclusive early look at the night’s top fashions and jewelry, sneak peeks at last minute preparations and rehearsals, as well as sit-down interviews with 2008 AMA performers and presenters. “Dancing with the Stars’” Carrie Ann Inaba and “The Bachelor”/”The Bachelorette” host Chris Harrison will host live from the red carpet. Pussycat Dolls’ Nicole Scherzinger will be on hand as music correspondent, “Project Runway” Season Four winner Christian Siriano will serve as the fashion correspondent and “High School Musical’s” Corbin Bleu will be reporting the action from backstage. “American Idol” winner David Cook will perform hits from the red carpet. “2008 American Music Awards Red Carpet Live!” will air on SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 23 (7:00-8:00 p.m., ET/PT) on ABC, immediately followed by the 36th annual AMAs.

“David Cook” the album is like David Archuleta the person à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’  it’s a teenager. It’s thrashing about, searching for an identity like schoolmates on career day, trying on hat after hat to see which one fits best. It’s eminently listenable, gratifyingly variable and certainly well-produced. But it’s also a mildly unfocused volley from an artist who’s bursting with talent, but still musically finding himself.

Plus, this may be the first person to mention the hidden track.

To sum up:

Somehow, “David Cook” matches its creator – a little unfocused but brimming with potential and so much likability that the faults get forgotten.

I like the “bursting with talent” and “brimming with potential” parts myself.
