NEW YORK — News Corp. chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch was the surprise presenter here Monday night at the 38th International Emmy Awards, honoring Simon Cowell with the International Emmy Founders Award for his contributions to TV and entertainment around the world.

The award was previously announced, but the presenter remained a mystery until Murdoch walked onstage and said: “Good evening, everyone. I’m Rupert Murdoch.”

He told the crowded ballroom at the New York Hilton in midtown Manhattan that Cowell has “helped make Fox Broadcasting no. 1 season after season” over the past decade — thanks to his role on American Idol — and added: “I’m confident his launch of X Factor in the U.S. next year will build on that success for years to come.”

No garland required: Katharine McPhee gets spirited for Christmas

“I figured I’m still going to have to sing these songs whether there is garland in the studio or not, ” McPhee said last week from her home in Los Angeles — noting that since she is a California native, she’s already used to surf-weather Christmases.

For the next few weeks, McPhee’s life will revolve around promoting the album with a series of tree-lighting appearances — including Thanksgiving Day at the Macy’s at Lenox Square mall.

ADD CAROL BURNETT, THE NAZI-HUNTER, TO YOUR THANKSGIVING WEEK

FAA Insider: So how did this part come about?

Carol: “Well, I’ve been watching Glee since it began, from the get-go. And I go around the country every so often and I do a one-woman show where I do questions and answers, and the audience – it’s all random. And somebody asked me about what I would like to do on television. I said, ‘I would like to be a guest on Glee.’ And the audience all went, ‘Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.’ So actually, I called my agent and I said, ‘If they’ve ever got an opening or anything, you know, I would sure love to play in their sandbox.’ So he called back in a few weeks and he said, ‘Ask and ye shall receive.’ And so I said, ‘Oh, that’s great. I would just love to lock eyeballs, as we call it, with Jane Lynch, whom I adore, who plays Sue.’ And so they didn’t have a script, and we waited and all, and then finally they said I’d be playing Jane’s mother. And I said, ‘That’s sensational.’ And then I read on the internet that I’m a Nazi-hunter; a retired Nazi-hunter. Sue’s mother is a retired Nazi-hunter. Well, is that wonderful.”

‘Glee’ actress Amber Riley recalls ‘American Idol’ rejection

“With so many people in my family singing, it was kind of easy for me to go into clubs and sing background, ” she said. “This was my first time out of my comfort zone auditioning. When I did that and they told me no, my world crumbled. I was thinking these people are in the industry and they are telling me no. I’m not good enough to do this. I definitely thought that for a minute… It was a very humbling experience after being told how good I was the whole time.”

With some encouragement from her mother, who told Riley, “You know what you have and you know who you are and you know the gift you have. You just have to work harder, ” the “Glee” actress summoned the courage to quit her job at the home furnishing store Ikea and pursue music full time.

Glee’s Kurt and Blaine: To Kiss…or Not to Kiss?

Darren Criss, the show’s newbie breakout star who plays out gay high schooler Blaine, says he doesn’t even know if the guys’ relationship will take a romantic turn.

“Chris and I are both equally interested and curious to see where they go because there are days we’re like, ‘Oh, my God they’re totally going to be together’ and then there are other days we’re like, ‘No way are they going to be together, ‘ ” he told me yesterday at the American Music Awards.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Glee’s Max Adler – The Kiss That Has Lips Flapping

Radar: When you kissed Kurt, I felt that in an instant, I completely changed my opinion of you, and your character changed from being somewhat one dimensional to complex, and I actually felt sorry for you. How did people react to your character before the game-changing kiss, and how do they react now?

Max: “People reacted in the same exact way you did. They told me they saw me as a one dimensional dude, with not much depth, who was almost, to them, seen as a glorified extra who’s scenes would be predictable and he would be bullying just to bully. Of course, I had viewed this differently in my own head, haha, but I can see the audience’s point from their perspective. But now, again, they are reacting the same as you. They feel sympathetic towards Karofsky, and see he has a heart and he is just a scared, fearful, confused guy who isnt really quite sure how to deal with his emotions and where to even start.”

Wagner ‘is in the top half of X Factor vote every week’

For millions, Wagner Carrilho is worth voting for simply to vex Simon Cowell.

And the X Factor joke is far from over yet – as bookmakers back the 53-year-old to make it through to the very end of the contest.

Week after week, the public have voted to keep the Brazilian former PE teacher in the ITV reality show – against the judges’ wishes.

But although many speculated that he was simply scraping through the public vote thanks to a few diehard fans, it seems they are wrong. According to apparent internet leaks, Carrilho is regularly in the top half of the results.

Backstage at DWTS: Bristol Palin Explains Tonight’s “Bizarre” Scores

Actually, blame Renée, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mya and the entire cast of Chicago (from both Broadway and the big screen)!

“Look, Broadway’s never been done in the finals, so I thought we’d take it and add some creativity, ” Mark explained. “And I was bummed that we didn’t get three nines, but the judges weren’t satisfied and were comparing us to the movie—it’s a multi-million dollar movie! With the best dancers in the world!”

“And Renée Zellweger, ” added Bristol with a laugh. “It was bizarre because we had only five days to rehearse this on top of another dance. I am bummed about the scores because I thought the routine went so well and I had fun out there. It was definitely risky to do a performance like that, but it was good.”

Midler blasts ‘bland’ ‘Idol’, ‘X Factor’

Bette Midler has spoken out against music reality shows such as American Idol and The X Factor, describing the artists on both shows as ‘bland’.

“That’s really, really dangerous. That’s not good for culture. Not everyone is a star. It gives people a sense of entitlement, ” she told Richard Bacon’s BBC 5 Live show.

“I hear people who are a generation younger than me, who want all the perks and gratification that comes from being in our business for 20 years or more. They think they deserve it because, ‘I am, who I am’. It has pervaded my country. My country is 25th in mathematics and science but number one in self esteem.”
