Oh well, I expect the Disney thing is part of the AI winner gig. I guess the exposure is good anway. It is too bad it is on Christmas day.

But it's good that this gig is taped several weeks earilier, so Cook will be having time off during the holidays. He deserves it. LOL.

Davidx2- You are right that the nasty stuff goes both ways. I wouldn't worry about it affecting the Davids' friendship. I know for sure that David Archuleta has been very mature about the "stuff" that happens. He has said many times that it is part of the business. They will be fine.

Trina- I know David A is in the age range of Miley and the Jonas Brothers, but he doesn't fit any more than Cook does in the Disney crowd. There is a reason he turned down an offer to be in High School Musical 3. Oh well, I expect the Disney thing is part of the AI winner gig. I guess the exposure is good anway. It is too bad it is on Christmas day.

I pretty much just hang out on DCO, and as the official website, it's probably no surprise that they delete anything hateful pretty quickly. As most Cook fans seem to view DA as DC's "other" younger brother, people are pretty aggressive on DCO about flagging anything bad.

I don't hang out on any of the unofficial websites, but I have some trouble seeing the folks at david-cook.org (or "the dash" as they're calling themselves these days) putting up with that sort of thing.

Well said, Sue! I'm a fan of both Davids too. Musically, Archie is more my style but how can you not love Cook. He's intelligent, humble and has a great sense of humour....and he's always treated DA with love and respect. It's a shame how some fans act....I've seen it on both sides. Archie fans who hate Cook and Cook fans who love to pick on Archie. I can't believe that either would condone this and knowing that Cook has heard some of it is sad indeed. :sad_wp: I hope that some of those fansites will do something to stop this from going any further (like deleting hateful comments). I'd hate to see this ruin the Davids' friendship. :cry_wp:

DC will be performing at the Walt Disney Christmas Parade

Ew. This is most likely one of those "contractually obligated" as winner type things. Or else it's one of the compromises he had to make in order to have some time off at Christmas.

ETA: Aw, that Blender video makes me want to pet him. These guys are real people. Words hurt.

"David Cook speaks to Blender"

I feel bad that Cookie knows that some of the Archie fans have said some really mean things about him. Cookie does read the boards. It's not a competition anymore, lol, there is plenty of room in the music biz. I love them both. I am a die hard Archie fan but I respect Cook and he is just so gosh darn talented that it's hard not to notice. Well Cookie, if you are reading this blog, this Archie fan loves ya too. :) I hope you both sell a million records by X-MAS.

Erm. Looking at that description, this seems much, much more up Archie's alley. Seeing his name amidst the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus and Corbin Bleu is like the ultimate case of "what doesn't belong here" LOL

Yeah Crush sounded great... I wish they will just upload those already...

I want a David/Jordin duet so bad, but what song could they sing...

And for the fans of both David:

And haha to gushing over Pink and not wanting to look like a dork in front of her.

I would *love* a Jordin/David duet.

It is interesting how people see different things in the same article, though. Kind of like statsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

Yeah, kind of like the "does Cook have the most successful Idol coronation song or not...." debate that went down when the Magic Rainbow went platinum. If even stats aren't concrete proof of anything and so open to debate, you can fuggetabout definitively deciphering ambiguous reviews.

My interpretation, for the record, of the NYC critic was a begrudging "hey, it's actually pretty good...if you like that sort of thing. Which, you know, I don't. But if I did, it's not bad."

What I got from it was à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“This guy is limited in style but likeabale and talented enough to elevate his rather lackluster songs, and he shows promise that one day he can expand his versatility to include styles and songs that are more agreeable to this reviewerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢.

Hey, that's exactly what I got too.

And with that, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m already bored with this topic. LOL.

LOL. At least he got us talking about the review. Maybe that's why he wrote it in such way. If he'd wrote "This CD sucks more than my new hoover" or "This is the bestest CD EVER!!11!" we would know exactly what he meant. But, then he'd probably be writing in the comments section of EW rather than being the reviewer for NYT. LOL. I guess he has to earn his paycheque. Goodness knows that I am more likely to check out a review everybody is talking about (I don't read them all. There are far too many of them and many of them aren't that well-written. At least this guy can write).

Kirsten, I think that's why the OP used the word "ultimately". Eventually, it ends on a semi-good note, although he certainly gets his share of criticisms in. personally I don't think it was a straight pan or a praise, it was somewhere in between. What I got from it was "This guy is limited in style but likeabale and talented enough to elevate his rather lackluster songs, and he shows promise that one day he can expand his versatility to include styles and songs that are more agreeable to this reviewer'. So yes to Cook's personality and ability to sell a song, no to (most of) the songwriting and to the "rock howl" in general. That's my take anyway.

And with that, I'm already bored with this topic. LOL.

Good lord, those poor people at metacritic who will have to assign a number value to that review...

I read it as positive, like the reviewer wasn't that impressed with Idol David and had him all figured out, but found new sides to him on the album. By the end he seems pretty open to hearing more.

But reading NYT reviews is a lot like reading tea leaves, so -- ymmv.

Re: NYT: The reviewer says that DCTR is "unusually appealing" and that he can't obscure his "essential geniality" which could have been a limitation but "turns out to be an asset." He disses two of the songs, but says that DC's broad, capable voice . . . redeems" them and "adds shade and texture to 'Permanent.'" He then praises DC's use of a "dulcet mode" on two songs, Avalanche and "Lie," which he says is "the albumà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s highlight, and also its best-written track." And suggests that DC has expanded his range and may expand it further in the future. All of that is pretty positive. Basically, DC forced him to get past his inherent distaste for the genre to (at least grudgingly) admit that DC has put forward an appealing record.

Typical NYT review---couldn't just be straightforward. But my guess is that metacritic.com will ultimately read the review to be on balance pretty positive.

While I agree with all the views expressed above re the NYT article, I came away happy with what impressed me as an overall upbeat tenor to the opinion. I guess by that I mean, to me, the author really seemed to approach the record wanting to like it, found some things about it that he really didn't expect though liked it anyway (to his apparent surprise), but wants to acknowledge Cook has much more potential as he displayed, in part, on the album and ultimately he challenges Cook to step up to himself (and fans to hang on and wait if The Record doesn't do it for them.) I believe even Cook admits this album is a collection of many parts of him, a step forward on his journey, and a glimpse of many sides of his prismatic musicality. This review reflects this too, in my view.

I do think that the NYT was ultimately quite positive about it

Huh. I did not get that impression at all. I thought that it said that Cook was better than the material and that Cook shows potential for improving. "Finally Mr. Cook has forgone the Howls for a third way, giving hope there could someday be a fourth, a fifth or even more."

I just don't think categorizing him "as the smug-grinned rocker who won the most recent season of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idol,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ has exactly two settings to his voice: Regular Howl and Anguished Howl." is meant to be complimentary. Howling is generally not a positive way of describing singing. Neither is saying that he generally only has two styles of singing. "Like the genre he loves, Mr. Cook is hampered here by dim, amorphous songwriting" Ouch.

Actually, I think that he was a bit harsh. I think that Cook showed on the show that is capable of more nuance.

It is interesting how people see different things in the same article, though. Kind of like stats...

I will be very nice to the LATimes guy and assume by "snub" he means he thought DC deserved better. Personally I thought it was great he was the sole performer of the Red Carpet show. That stage with his name plastered all over it was visible the whole time the press was out with the celebs. So that was some good publicity right there.

Not to mention the entire red carpet bleacher section going nuts whenever he showed up on the carpet (that's what they get for inviting DC fans to fill the seats, heh.) At one point we had a "Da-vid" chant going. It was ftw.

About the LA Times "surprising snub," I don't think the writer gets the reason behind playing the red carpet. Anway, Cookie got to present on the show while performed in the pre-show. All in all, his management, publicist and label are probably ecstatic that he (and Light On and half of Declaration) got exposure.
