Trina- I know David A is in the age range of Miley and the Jonas Brothers, but he doesn’t fit any more than Cook does in the Disney crowd. I feel bad that Cookie knows that some of the Archie fans have said some really mean things about him. Cookie does read the boards. It’s not a competition anymore, lol, there is plenty of room in the music biz. I love them both. I am a die hard Archie fan but I respect Cook and he is just so gosh darn talented that it’s hard not to notice. Well Cookie, if you are reading this blog, this Archie fan loves ya too. I hope you both sell a million records by X-MAS.

My interpretation, for the record, of the NYC critic was a begrudging à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“hey, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s actually pretty goodà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦if you like that sort of thing. Which, you know, I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t. But if I did, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not bad.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ 

LOL That is, I think, the best summary of the NYT review that I’ve read.

It is interesting how people see different things in the same article, though. Kind of like statsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

Yeah, kind of like the “does Cook have the most successful Idol coronation song or not….” debate that went down when the Magic Rainbow went platinum. If even stats aren’t concrete proof of anything and so open to debate, you can fuggetabout definitively deciphering ambiguous reviews.

My interpretation, for the record, of the NYC critic was a begrudging “hey, it’s actually pretty good…if you like that sort of thing. Which, you know, I don’t. But if I did, it’s not bad.”

What I got from it was à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“This guy is limited in style but likeabale and talented enough to elevate his rather lackluster songs, and he shows promise that one day he can expand his versatility to include styles and songs that are more agreeable to this reviewerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢.

Hey, that’s exactly what I got too.

And with that, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m already bored with this topic. LOL.

LOL. At least he got us talking about the review. Maybe that’s why he wrote it in such way. If he’d wrote “This CD sucks more than my new hoover” or “This is the bestest CD EVER!!11!” we would know exactly what he meant. But, then he’d probably be writing in the comments section of EW rather than being the reviewer for NYT. LOL. I guess he has to earn his paycheque. Goodness knows that I am more likely to check out a review everybody is talking about (I don’t read them all. There are far too many of them and many of them aren’t that well-written. At least this guy can write).

And with that, I’m already bored with this topic. LOL.

I read it as positive, like the reviewer wasn’t that impressed with Idol David and had him all figured out, but found new sides to him on the album. By the end he seems pretty open to hearing more.

But reading NYT reviews is a lot like reading tea leaves, so — ymmv.

Typical NYT review—couldn’t just be straightforward. But my guess is that metacritic.com will ultimately read the review to be on balance pretty positive.

I do think that the NYT was ultimately quite positive about it

Huh. I did not get that impression at all. I thought that it said that Cook was better than the material and that Cook shows potential for improving. “Finally Mr. Cook has forgone the Howls for a third way, giving hope there could someday be a fourth, a fifth or even more.”

I just don’t think categorizing him “as the smug-grinned rocker who won the most recent season of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idol,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬  has exactly two settings to his voice: Regular Howl and Anguished Howl.” is meant to be complimentary. Howling is generally not a positive way of describing singing. Neither is saying that he generally only has two styles of singing. “Like the genre he loves, Mr. Cook is hampered here by dim, amorphous songwriting” Ouch.

Actually, I think that he was a bit harsh. I think that Cook showed on the show that is capable of more nuance.

Not to mention the entire red carpet bleacher section going nuts whenever he showed up on the carpet (that’s what they get for inviting DC fans to fill the seats, heh.) At one point we had a “Da-vid” chant going. It was ftw.
